FRI 22, SAT 23, SUN 24 JULY 2016 • NORTH BYRON PARKLANDS Look at Splendour now! SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS IS GROWING UP. It’s hard to believe that the music festival that grew its wings at Belongil Fields is in its 16th year! The lineup back in 2001 included Michael Franti and Spearhead, Resin Dogs, Powderfinger, Magic Dirt. I was only 32 and could pass for 28, which made me only a few years older than my festival cohort. Many of the festival attendees for 2016 probably weren’t even born back in the day, or were dancing to the Wiggles instead of slamming into people during a Frenzal Rhomb blast. It’s great to have a festival on our doorstep that celebrates the vibrancy of young music, in all its dirty anarchic glory. And for those voyeuristic music lovers such as me, it’s still a hoot to pull on some jeans and a shabby t-shirt and some gumboots to immerse yourself in the sound of now. Even if it does make you feel a little bit like Stifler’s mum. This year’s lineup is something like 10 times the depth of the first one, with mixup tents, little quiet gigs in tipis, and a homage to old fuckers like me with headlines such as The Cure. With The Strokes, Flume, The Avalanches, Sigur Ros, and a whole, whole lot more… 2016 is one big deposit in your memory bank. Just for god’s sake bring a cardigan. – Mandy Nolan
