Described by The New York Times as ‘The Sultan of Shred’, Bombino and his band will appear on Friday and Saturday. Also on the bill this year are Japanese kings of funk and soul Osaka Monaurail, much-loved reggae musician Mike Love (US), and Irish group Saint Sister, who NPR recently voted favourite discovery artists at SXSW 2018. All up more than 80 artists from around the world, the nation and locally grown, will descend on the small town of Mullumbimby for four days of captivating music.
not oversell or crowd venues. It’s inevitable that some gigs will be more popular than others, so please get to your ‘must see’ shows early to avoid disappointment, as venues do fill up. If a venue is full, then don’t stress, there is always another great act just across the road, or next door, that will have space. Please respect the town and the neighbours of our venues, and at the end of the night, please leave venues quietly.

Most self-respecting music tragics have a musical bucket list, acts they will travel halfway across the world to see. One of mine is coming to Mullumbimby this year!
New spaces and events
1. Comedy at the Council Chambers Featuring Rusty Berther, Mandy Nolan, Dusty Rich, Ellen Briggs, Jonathan Atherton, Lindsay Webb, Sergio Ben Bullshit, Paul McMahon and Matt Ford. Mullum Music Fest brings comedy to the Council Chambers with headline comics from around the country delivering two powerpacked hour-long shows Saturday and Sunday. All shows are unique and it’s a strictly 15-plus show. No little kids. Only adults with very naughty inner children. Saturday & Sunday, 2pm & 4pm, Council Chambers, Station Street.
2. Byron School of Art Exhibition & Live Music From Friday to Sunday the Byron School of Art (BSA) plays host to live music and an exciting exhibition by Brian Taranto.
EXHIBITION: Brian ‘BT’ Taranto, is many things. A festival and concert promoter and music merch mogul with his company Love Police, and when he has some time or a vibe, apparently an artist! After spending over 30 years on the rock ’n’ roll highway expect to see to a heavy musical influence in the artworks on show. Personal reflections and images of a life of quality tunes and good times. LIVE MUSIC AT BSA:
MAGIC BUS Once again the ever-popular Magic Bus will be cruising the streets of our Festival in regular intervals to ferry festival-goers between venues and throughout the town. Cost: $5 for a wrist band for the weekend or $2 a ride. PARKING The Festival takes place in Mullumbimby’s existing venues. There is parking throughout the town. Please don’t drive directly to ticketing to park; rather park when you first reach town and walk to ticketing. It is a small town. There is parking available on Station Street if you turn left or right at the roundabout, at the Bowlo, at the High School, and behind the Ex-Services Club. Please use these carparks, or park legally on the streets. Once parked you can stroll, ride your bikes, or use the Magic Bus to get around.
BUSKING As Mullum Music Festival is an artistically directed event, it’s important your activities don’t conflict with the already programmed events of the festival. Busking is permitted for holders of Byron Shire Council Busking Permits, and Council rangers are on hand to enforce Council’s busking policy. Busking Guidelines: • All amplified busking must cease at 10pm and no amplified busking is allowed between the hours of 10pm and 8am. Non-amplified busking to end at 12am. No busking is to occur between 12am and 8am. • No Busking on Dalley Steet, please, for festival weekend please busk only on Burringbar Street. • Please do not busk in Festival designated areas, including the Civic Hall grounds, Festival Market Place or Civic Hall or Mullum High School precincts. • Please no busking in side street off Burringbar Street. • Where electrically amplified sound equipment is used, it must not be powered by mains power or generators. WASTE-FREE CATERING at FESTIVAL MARKETPLACE
RENEW FEST COMMUNITY PROGRAM
This year Mullum Cares is working with the festival to introduce Waste-Free Catering: A strategy based on avoiding single-use food and beverage containers. Again a deposit might be required, but you will get to eat and drink out of real cups and plates that don’t go into landfill. On return of the items you get your money back. How cool is that!
Proudly sponsored by FIRST SUN SOLAR We have collaborated once again with Renew Fest to present a community program that celebrates Mullumbimby’s passionate engagement with positive actions for sustainable change.

ANNUAL TREE PLANTING
For details on the wonderful workshops, walks and talks of this year’s community program head to www.mullummusicfestival.com. You can also visit the Renew Fest stall at the festival marketplace!
How it works: You will need to purchase a $2 sustainable cup with your first drink. This exchangeable cup will be refreshed with each drink purchased at the Stone & Wood bars. Return your cup at end of the festival and receive $2 back! In this way you can play your part in a more sustainable future at no cost.
n
We are committed to removing single-use plastic cups and water bottles from the festival’s ecological footprint. With The support of Green Music Australia, Mullum Cares and We Refill all venues will have cold drinks including water bottle refills available but not disposable water bottles. A festival pass for filtered water bottle refills will be available from the ticketing office for $5 and single refills at the stations for $1. So, help reduce single-use plastics and #BYOBOTTLE!
Renew Fest strongly supports MMF’s move towards being free of single-use plastic cups and bottles and is grateful for their ongoing support for COREM. Thank you for your support too, by bringing your own reusable water bottles and cups to MMF this year!
As we continue our march towards a plastic-free event, we are excited to partner with Stone & Wood on our cup-exchange initiative. Again, Stone & Wood bars will be using re-usable cups – and encouraging a circular economy! #forcupssake

guitarist and songwriter Omara ‘Bombino’ Moctar was raised during an era of armed struggles for Tuareg independence and violent suppression by government forces. Bombino’s electrifying jams capture the spirit of resistance and rebellion while echoing with guitar riffs reminiscent of fellow Africans Tinariwen and Ali Farka Touré, not to mention rock and blues icons such as Jimi Hendrix, John Lee Hooker and Jimmy Page.
KAIIT (PNG/AU) At only 20 years old, Kaiit has shaken up the world of future-soul and RnB. She’s been named in Red Bull Music’s best rappers under 25, and claimed by Jill Scott as her and Erykah Badu’s downunder love child. Kaiit is proving to be one of the most exciting artists to watch in 2018.

BEN OTTEWELL (UK) As a singer and lead guitarist in rock band Gomez, Ben Ottewell is well known for his unmistakable voice and talent for blistering and inspired guitar solos. Rolling Stone declared, ‘Gomez’s not-so-secret weapon is Ben Ottewell.’ And as GQ magazine once wrote and anyone listening can attest, ‘[his] voice is not of this world.’ Since his first solo release, Shapes & Shadows (2011), Ottewell has been pleasing audiences with a series of successful acoustic tours across the UK, US and Australia. This was followed by his 2014 acclaimed album Rattlebag.

Tangents are an Australian-based quintet that melds electronic production, experimental rock and free improvisation. Comfortable working with jazz, folk music, post-rock and electronic music, their album Stateless was voted by Treble as on of the 10 Best Jazz Albums of 2016 which labelled it as ‘an exercise in beat-laden serenity’. A Tangents live show is a natural extension of their recorded work – unique and unrepeatable, featuring an instinctual, organic sense of time an space, rhythm and melody between the five musicians.
The Sunshine Coast’s 17 year old boy wonder Izack Hunt took out the Songwriting category. His music has been recognised by the Queensland Music Awards for the Indigenous section and he was a semi-finalist in their International Songwriting Competition.
