Television Guide Wednesday October 31, to Tuesday November 6, 2012 Highlights this week Friday evening is great for spy movies about the Cold War on ABC2, with: 1. The Spy Who Came In From The Cold up first at 8.30pm, followed by The Manchurian Candidate (the original and the best) at 10.20pm. Based on the novel by John le Carré, Spy stars Richard Burton as a disenchanted British agent who may be won over by the East Germans. Equally good are Frank Sinatra and Laurence Harvey in The Manchurian Candidate, derived from Richard Condon’s novel. The son of a prominent, rightwing political family has been brainwashed as an unwitting assassin for an international Communist conspiracy, and this at the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis when the film was released. 2. If you’re over espionage later in the evening, then switch channels to 7TWO for The Prince Of Tides, based on the 1986 novel by Pat Conroy. Barbra Streisand and Nick Nolte are excellent in this moving tale of family dysfunction.
