TELEVISION GUIDE Wednesday October 24, to Tuesday October 30, 2012 Highlights this week 1. Here’s a classic for all you middle-class rebels out there: Marlon Brando stars in The Wild One (ABC2, Saturday, 9.55pm), which inspired a generation of bikers. Not that the town the OMCGs terrorised was all that impressed. Read about the true story upon which the film was based at www.filmsite.org/wild.html. 2. Before Scientology gave full rein to Tom Cruise’s peculiar narcissism, he put in a good performance in Born On The Fourth of July (Gem, Sunday, 8.30pm), the second in director Oliver Stone’s trilogy about the impacts of the Vietnam War (Platoon and Heaven and Earth are the others). Cruise plays Ron Kovic (based on his true story), a patriotic, all-American small town athlete who shocks his family by enlisting with the Marines. Kovic’s gung-ho enthusiasm turns to horror when he accidentally kills one of his own men in a firefight. The film also made famous the expression ‘love you longtime’.
