TELEVISION GUIDE Wednesday October 10, to Tuesday October 16, 2012 Highlights this week 1. Jad Capelja and Nell Schofield (who, incidentally, directed a short called Brokeback Mountain Bikes) star in Bruce Beresford’s 1981 hit Puberty Blues (ABC1, Saturday 8.30pm), based on the book by Gabrielle Carey and the now tediously famous Kathy Lette. Two schoolgirls lodge themselves in the cool, but chauvinist, Cronulla Beach surfie set. They learn that chicks can surf, too. You can find out more about the lessfamous Carey at http://gabriellecarey.com.au. 2. Guy Pearce stars in the new Australian series of Jack Irish (ABC1, Sunday, 8.30pm), about a former criminal lawyer turned private investigator and debt collector in the mean streets of Melbourne. The series is based on the novels by Peter Temple, surely one of Australia’s best writers and the deserved winner of the Miles Franklin Literary Award for Truth, about his other fictional star, police detective inspector Steve Villani.
