TELEVISION GUIDE

Wednesday September 26, to Tuesday October 2, 2012 Highlights this week While most of the films this coming weekend are a load of trash, we managed to sniff out a couple of goodies: 1. Gloria Swanson is superb as Norma Desmond, a faded silent movie star who dreams of making a triumphant return to the screen, in Sunset Boulevard (ABC2, Saturday, 10.55pm), film noir directed and co-written by Billy Wilder. Director Cecil B DeMille and gossip columnist Hedda Hopper play themselves. 2. Australian director Rolf de Heer, who has local associations, and Peter Djigirr made the remarkable Ten Canoes (SBS1, Sunday, 11.05pm), filmed entirely in Aboriginal languages and narrated in English by David Gulpilil. Set in Arnhem Land, before western contact, it tells the story of a group of ten men hunting goose eggs. The leader of the group, Minygululu, tells the young Dayindi (Jamie Gulpilil) a story about another young man even further back in time who, like Dayindi, coveted his elder brother’s youngest wife.
