TELEVISION GUIDE Wednesday September 5, to Tuesday September 11, 2012 Highlights this week 1. Jennifer Lawrence is outstanding in the gripping independent drama Winter’s Bone (SBS1, Saturday, 9.30pm), based on Daniel Woodrell’s 2006 ‘country noir’ novel of the same name. The Lawrence character seeks to find her father in order that her mentallyimpaired mother and her family may continue to have a home. Set in extreme American poverty and emotional deprivation, it’s a harsh, brutal reality brilliantly realised and fully deserving of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. 2. At the other end of the filmic scale The Chronicles of Riddick (7Mate, Sunday, 9.40pm) sees action star Vin Diesel bombing without a decent script. Somehow Judi Dench was coaxed by Diesel into this scifi train wreck, the unfortunate sequel to the cult hit Pitch Black, which at least had the advantage of Radha Mitchell and some dramatic tension. Scores only 29 per cent on the Tomatometer.
