TELEVISION GUIDE Wednesday April 25 to Tuesday May 2, 2012 Highlights this week 1. When religion gets dangerous: Paul Scofield and Leo McKern, better known as Rumpole of the Bailey, do a superb job of work in A Man for All Seasons (ABC2, Saturday, 10.10pm), a 1966 film based on Robert Bolt’s play of the same name. The man in question is Thomas More, who stood up to King Henry VIII (1491–1547) when the king rejected the Roman Catholic Church in order to obtain a divorce and remarriage. The film won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor. It didn’t do to oppose Henry, and More, once the king’s favourite, lost his head for his principled stand. You can read more about More at www. luminarium.org/renlit/morebio.htm. 2. Poor New York cops it again in Cloverfield (Eleven, Sunday, 8.30pm), in which a large monster attacks the city, as they tend to do. It is told in the jerky hand-held video style from the poirnt of view of six mates caught up in the action. Like Thomas More, the Statue of Liberty loses her head. It may be all H P Lovecraft’s fault: he wrote back in the 20s that NYC was built over a subterranean chamber where demons worshipped ancient monsters. Since then King Kong attacked the 1930s, followed by Q The Winged Serpent in the 80s, the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man (Ghostbusters), and the ‘cannibalistic underground dwellers’ in CHUD.
