TELEVISION GUIDE Wednesday April 18 to Tuesday April 24, 2012 Highlights this week 1. It doesn’t rate all that highly on the Tomatometer but this Echo drudge thinks Hancock (Go!, Saturday, 8.30pm) is good fun. Will Smith plays a hard-drinking superhero who is more problem than saviour, costing his city millions of dollars in infrastructure damage. Jason Bateman is the PR man who tries to reform his image. It’s a satrical look at the whole superhero myth and at PR spin. 2. A new Australian movie! Lachy Hulme and Shane Jacobson play two of the trapped miners in Beaconsfield (NBN, Sunday, 8.30pm), the story of the 2006 gold mine collapse in Tasmania which drew international attention. There was to be a mini-seres of the same name, so this might be the precursor or a change of plan. Of the 17 people who were in the mine at the time, 14 escaped immediately following the collapse, one was killed and the remaining two were found alive using a remote-controlled device. While reporting from the mine site, prominent Australian journalist Richard Carleton suffered a heart attack and died. When Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters heard of the miners’ request to have the band’s music sent down on MP3 players, he faxed them, indicating he would meet them for a beer. He was good to his word, and later the band recorded an instrumental in tribute to the miners.
