TELEVISION GUIDE Wednesday March 21 to Tuesday March 27, 2012 Highlights this week 1. Johnny Depp has a supporting role in the excellent Cuban drama Before Night Falls (SBS2, Saturday, 9.35pm), based on the autobiography of Cuban poet and novelist Reinaldo Arenas. It charts his success as a writer and his oppression by the Cuban government before escape to the United States and eventual suicide at age 47 in New York. Javier Bardem earned an Oscar nomination for his role as Arenas. A constant theme in Arenas’s work is the condemnation of the Castro government, not to mention the Catholic Church and US culture and politics. 2. An inhabitant of the Mesozoic checks out the landscape in the new series Australia: The Time Traveller’s Guide (ABC1, Sunday, 7.30pm). This is an ambitious Australian production starting with the formation of our planet and the life-free surface of Australia as part of the Gondwana supercontinent, until the arrival of plants in the Cambrian, the precursor to our great coal deposits, and on to the evolution of Clive Palmer. There’s a groovy interactive website for the program at www.abc.net.au/tv/timetravellers.
