Photo Jeff ‘School’s back, baby’ Dawson With students returning to school Tuesday, teachers and students are required to test for COVID-19 twice weekly. As part of the measures by the NSW Govenment, both parents/ carers and teachers will be provided with free rapid antigen tests (RATs).

Yet unions are claiming that NSW school cleaners have been excluded from COVID-19 testing.

The United Workers Union, The Parenthood and the NSW Teachers Federation are calling on Liberal Premier Dominic Perrottet to include them in the scheme.

They said in a statement, ‘In other jurisdictions, such as the ACT where cleaning is not contracted

out and cleaners are directly employed, they are included in the return to school plans and will be provided with RATs’.

Lyndal Ryan, United Workers Union Property Services director, described it as ‘disrespectful’ given cleaners are an integral part of a school community.

Ms Ryan says, ‘They’ve been on the frontline of this pandemic, keeping schools open so other frontline workers can continue to do their essential jobs’.

Meanwhile, NSW Liberal Premier Dominic Perrottet has announced vouchers worth $500 for beforeand after-school care.

NSW minister for Education and Early Learning Sarah Mitchell said, ‘Every family with children at a NSW primary school is eligible for one voucher per child, which will provide each child with approximately 60 sessions of free beforeand after-school care (BASC)’.

She says it will be delivered through Service NSW, and will follow a similar premise to the current Dine and Discover vouchers.

The government say parents will be able to apply for, and utilise, the vouchers from February 28 by applying ‘online via a MyServiceNSW account, in the app, or by visiting their nearest Service Centre’.

Three group homes for single mothers facing homelessness would be built on the former Eco Village site in Brunswick Heads under a plan proposed by local developer, Brandon Saul.

The proposed not-for-profit development would be the pilot project for a much larger plan to address Byron’s housing and homelessness crisis through the creation of a community land trust.

Mr Saul bought the former Eco Village site on Saddle Road last July for $10 million. He is now planning to donate part of the 52-hectare site to the housing trust to build permanent group homes for single mothers and their children.

Several rooms would also be made available for older women.

‘There’s a growing number of single mums who have been forced out of the rental market,’ said Mr Saul. ‘This particular impact is something I haven’t seen before in the Shire – hundreds of women and children living in cars, quietly moving from carpark to carpark.

‘In many cases they’ve got jobs, kids in school – their lives are here, and they’re a part of our community.’

Mr Saul says if approved, each home would have ten bedrooms, including three small, clustered cabins to allow for flexible living arrangements. Each cluster would also have shared kitchen, laundry and lounge areas.

‘This is not the type of temporary group home where people go after being in an institution – we’re

not concentrating people with problems in one area with no services,’ Mr Saul said. ‘It’s dignified, permanent, low-cost housing for ordinary people with jobs.’

With Mr Saul having donated the land for the project, the focus has now moved to the financing and planning process. One local, who wishes to remain anonymous, has already donated some funds, and the Northern Rivers Community Foundation has agreed to help raise the remainder. Once the plans and financing are organised, Mr Saul says a Development Application would be submitted to Byron Council for assessment.

Land trust Mr Saul and others involved in the pilot project hope that it will provide a scalable model that can be replicated across the Shire with different types of housing for different groups such as young people and older women.

It’s not the first attempt at setting up a land trust to address the housing crisis in the Shire.

The model is also being explored

by Council after being proposed by former councillor Paul Spooner.

The model has had considerable success overseas, particularly in northern Europe, and in the US where Bernie Sanders set up a highly successful scheme in Vermont.

‘We’ve done our homework, it looks like it’s possible, and we’ve already got some money in the bank.

‘With a bit of luck, I’m hoping that in the first quarter of this year we’ll get it off the ground.’ ▶ Continued on page 2

Statement by Byron Hospital reps from NSW Nurses & Midwives Association ‘On behalf of the Byron Central Hospital branch of the NSW Nurses & Midwives Association (NSWNMA), we would like to comment on the plight of health professionals currently working through this pandemic in NSW. ‘We agree that improved pay and conditions would be appreciated, not least as an acknowledgement of the increasing challenges we have all experienced during the pandemic.

‘An additional, and urgent, need is safe staffing for nurses and midwives, who find themselves in a

similar situation to most most public services in NSW. ‘For many years, the NSWNMA has pushed an intransigent NSW government for nurse/ midwife:patient ratios, rather than the unwieldy, often misinterpreted system that measures patient care needs on an inequitable equation of hours per day. Legislated ratios mean that nurses and midwives throughout NSW could come to work assured that there is a reasonable workload limit, ensuring that they can provide the best care possible to every patient.

Queensland has ratios, Victoria has ratios, ACT has ratios.

‘If the ratio system had been in place for nurses and midwives in NSW prior to the pandemic, we would at least have had some padding in the system. Now we are down to the wire. Every shift means that we have the increasingly terrifying prospect of not having the time to provide safe care to our patients in line with our registration responsibilities. To achieve nurse/midwife:patient ratios in NSW, we need our communities to understand that improved staffing levels

Vale local bright light, Heeling Dean Vale Heeling (Helen Dean), a much-loved and long-time member of the Mullumbimby and Byron Shire community.

Heeling passed away around 4pm Monday January 24 at the Tweed Hospital, after a major cardiac arrest.

She had earlier been admitted to Tweed Hospital.

She will be very missed by her family, friends, and the wider community and even farther afield.

Such was Heeling’s big beautiful heart and smile that it shone so much love to all who crossed her path. A light so bright it reached right across the planet.

Locals know Heeling as a popular local personality, tarot reader, and alternative therapist.

Community spirit Heeling was also known for her community spirit:

volunteering at the Byron Writers Festival, Schoolies (every year), Bluesfest, the Mullum Museum, Pets for Life, and elsewhere.

Always happy to lend a hand, she would be the

first to reach out to support a friend in need, in a crisis, even supporting a friend through a major health crisis.

Nothing was too big or small for Heeling.

Her bright light and joy will be very much missed and felt by so many in the Byron Shire.

We offer our heartfelt thanks to the ICU medical teams at both Lismore and Tweed hospitals, where Heeling had been receiving care since Christmas Day. The Echo has learned that the Front Up for the Frontline team completed a successful pilot program, delivering meals for overnight staff in ED, ICU, and selected wards at The Tweed Hospital last week.

One of the organisers of the project, Sarah Armstrong, said, ‘We’re looking forward to working with NSW Health to expand our support for workers at

Tweed and thank our meal supplier, Dinner is Served, for their generosity and support in getting the program off the ground’.

The project, which began with a GoFundMe page, has already been providing meals, snacks, and drinks to health workers at Byron and Lismore hospitals thanks to the generosity of residents and local businesses.

Total financial donations for the fundraiser have now exceeded $30,000.

PŕȒŊĶŕĎ ĎşŕëƐĶşŕƆ There has also been a very large wave of support from local businesses, who have made in-kind donations.

‘Our little team have been

so heartened by the way that the community has got behind our GoFundMe,’ Ms Armstrong said.

There is now also a growing group of volunteers who have also stepped in to help.

Meanwhile, the Brunswick Picture House has come to the party, donating $6,000 worth of tickets to its shows, so that frontline staff can enjoy some free entertainment when they get a rare night off.

‘A Picture House staff member recently spent a couple of nights in hospital and witnessed firsthand the dedication and care provided,’ a spokesperson for the venue said.

The inaugural Herb Elliott Twilight Meet was held last Saturday at the Cavanbah Centre athletic track, hosted by the Byron Bay Runners.

Contested events included the Community and Elite 3,000 metres, shot put, and the Herb Elliott 1,500m for male and female competitors. It was the first Athletics NSW-recognised inter-club event the Byron Bay Runners have hosted.

Club president Caroline Bailey said, ‘COVID has really affected community sport and Athletics NSW wanted to get more events into the regions and move away from a metro focus, so we put our

It was a bit of effort from all our volunteers’.

Racing got underway at 5.45pm with the Community 3,000m event.

hit the lead from the gun and never looked back, winning in 11:07:57.

The women’s community event was taken out by local runner Laura Donohoe, who ran a smart race letting the

fast starting field go and paced her run perfectly to take the win in 12:29:22.

Caroline Bailey (12:56:33) came second ahead of Annie Milne (13:00:03).

Fresh off a bronze medal at the Australian 3,000m championships only days earlier, Aspen Anderson (Qld) set the pace early, leading the ladies around the 7.5 laps.

Teammate and training partner Indie Seccombe trailed in Aspen’s footsteps as the girls got out to a clear lead. A sprint finish over the last 100m saw Indie prevail to take the win in 10:33:86 to Aspen 10:34:67. Byron Bay’s Ruby Hughes was the third placed in a time of 11:22:29.

Local young surf life saver Oliver Sharpe has been crowned as a new Ironman champion at the NSW Country Surf Titles, where Cudgen picked up the major prize for the fifth year in a row.

The three-day event was held at Forster, and attracted 33 non-metropolitan surf

clubs. Cudgen were the overall club champions, with 733 points pipping WarillaBarrack Point, who finished just 19 points behind.

Port Macquarie (431) came in third ahead of Lennox Head-Alstonville (388) and Byron Bay (268).

North Coast competitors took out the prestigious Open Ironwoman and

Ironman events.

Oliver Sharpe from Lennox-Head Alstonville SLSC, who is 16 years old, skipped straight to the Open Ironman start line and walked away with gold, adding to his U17 Board race victory.

‘I was going to do U17s then I thought I might do Opens and race with the boys and have a bit of fun.

I was a bit shocked, I didn’t think I’d come in first, but that’s surf racing for you,’ said Oliver.

Sister Niamh Sharpe also enjoyed successes in the U15 Board race and the U15 Surfboard Riding event.

Other highlights included Maisie Miller’s (Lennox HeadAlstonville) first in the U19 surf race.

CROSSING THE LINE … PART II

By Fast Buck$ Last week I described some of the behaviour of Council staffers Mark Arnold and Ralph James over the past 20 months. At the time I kept quiet about what I perceived as their legal trickiness in the case against me because I told myself:

However, the hearing took place in the middle of the election campaign; no way could Council staff afford to lose the case, so they cheated. Or, as Ralph would no doubt prefer to see it, they resorted to ‘smart lawyering’. They introduced Sarah Ndiaye’s AVO application into the proceedings, even though the banning took place well before the AVO was lodged, and even though it was based on largely different grounds.

3. Their tactics only confirm their fear of me.

Certain recent events have pushed me over that line of tolerance, particularly as the staff are no doubt already schmoozing the new councillors and flattering them as they previously did so successfully with the Greens.

Bureaucrats love to quietly pull the levers of power away from the limelight, which means that I must, as punishment, do what I can to make them, er, famous.

Ok so in November I finally got Council in court over being banned for 12 months. My barrister cited sections 10 and 11 of the Local Government Act and Regulation 233 and argued that Council only ever had the legal power to remove me from one meeting at a time, based on an act of disorder that takes place at that meeting, and only following a Council resolution.

The intention here was obviously to recast the legal issues as one of Sarah’s protection rather than of my legal rights.

It worked brilliantly; I watched the proceedings via video link, and I noted in shock that after my barrister outlined the issues and the legal situation. HH Nicola Payne said angrily: ‘Are you arguing that despite Mr Anderson’s behaviour?’.

At the time I was appalled, all HH had at that stage read was Sarah’s allegations, which had not been tested in court, nor had I yet had any opportunity to say my piece. It amazes me how many people

are prepared in this day and age, despite their extensive professional training, to arrive at seemingly solid conclusions despite having heard only one side of the story. But if you read HH’s judgment (delivered later that same afternoon) you will see that the word ‘alleged’ appears before the word ‘behaviour’.

You will note HH accepted all of Council’s feeble supporting arguments, such as, ‘He’s left it too late to appeal’ (although there were in fact six months worth of ban left!) and the concept of ‘balance of convenience’, which she blamed my barrister for not addressing, when he’d obviously decided it was irrelevant. I think the problem was that this case was outside the normal Land and Environment Court areas of experience and expertise (being polite trendies, consultants and developers exchanging pleasantries).

Now this hearing was merely an application for an injunction ie an order to remove the ban so that I could attend Council meetings again. Later there was to be a full hearing to determine how the Local Government Act relates to the Inclosed Lands Act and occupational health and safety legislation etc.

Clearly Council staff knew they were extremely lucky to get Judge Pain for the injunction hearing and immediately after the election they approached me for a deal to settle the matter out of court.

Who knows how the main hearing might play out? The offer was that I would with draw the proceedings and pay Council’s

costs, and in return the ban would be lifted. I was a bit suss about the deadline specified but I agreed.

No sooner had I signed on the dotted line than the cops appeared on my doorstep with a summons. The prosecution wanted to change my bail conditions so that I couldn’t attend council on Thursdays when the meetings are on.

I was furious: I then read the final paragraph in a letter Ralph James had sent, and it become clear to me that this wasn’t Sarah’s work. Ralph – on council’s behalf – was merely trying to shift responsibility from council to the cops, for continuing to exclude me from council.

I had entered the settlement negotiations in good fatih, but Ralph evidently had his fingers crossed, while Mark Arnold never says ‘No’. How those guys face their reflection in their shaving mirrors I really don’t know.

Sarah herself was however no innocent.

She tried to have me banned from the meet-the-candidates nights. In the event she and I encountered each other 3 times without incident during the election campaign. I pointed this out to the magistrate and on that basis HH declined to give the prosecution what they wanted.

In other words I am now free to inspire terror in the staff – simply by being there.

Parachutist rescued after mishap A parachutist was rescued from trees at Tyagarah on Sunday, say police.

According to the police report, a 22-year-old female from Parkwood QLD was participating in a free-fall parachuting course near Byron Bay. ‘At about 6pm, she and

several others jumped from a plane at 14,000 feet above Tyagarah Airport. The parachutist was experienced, but still under instruction and made an error and crashed into trees’.

Her only apparent injury was a minor ankle strain, say police.

Photo & story David Lowe The perennial Lennox Head question: ‘Is Ross Lane open?’ moved a step closer to being permanently answered, after Ballina Council resolved to search for engineering solutions and funding to raise the low-lying section of the lane, which regularly floods.

As the only direct access route from Lennox Head to the west, Ross Lane has come under more pressure as development expands in and around the village.

When the road floods, the only way in or out in that direction is via a long detour to the south, or an even longer detour to the north.

Brad Pollard from the Lennox Head Chamber of Commerce told the last Ballina Council meeting that fixing Ross Lane’s flooding was a priority for parents, food suppliers, holiday-makers and emergency workers.

He said the question ‘Is

Wollongbar Wildlife Hospital moves closer David Lowe The Northern Rivers Wildlife Hospital, planned for Lindendale Road in Wollongbar, is a step closer to becoming a reality after Ballina Council voted to allow the idea to proceed to a development application (DA).

The original proposal has been scaled down, and access routes modified after concerns about extra cars coming through the nearby intersection with the Bruxner Highway.

Councillors heard a passionate deputation from local builder, Bruce Kemp, who said he supported the idea of the animal hospital, but felt this was the wrong location, claiming the extra traffic from the facility was a matter of life and death for him, his family and neighbours. He said the intersection was already very dangerous and becoming more so, especially for people with trailers. ‘It is putting our lives in danger,’ he said.

Higginson, who spoke in support of the project. ‘We live in one of the most biodiverse rich areas in Australia,’ she said. ‘Unfortunately, our wildlife are suffering… and are struggling significantly.’

Ms Higginson acknowledged the nearby intersection was dangerous, yet said the revised plan was to use the DPI access road to take traffic away from the contentious intersection.

All councillors voted in favour of the wildlife hospital proceeding, apart from Crs Eva Ramsey and Phillip Meehan. Councillors also resolved to restart lobbying government to improve the nearby intersection, which is planned to be bypassed at some stage in the future.

‘When Ross Lane floods it causes major disruptions for our community to travel to and from work, and also prevents emergency service vehicles which could have serious health and safety implications.

‘The only other way is to go through Ballina, which is already struggling to cope with the traffic, particularly during peak-hour periods.’

Ross Lane is one of two regional roads which may be about to fall under the control of state government, which has a focus on safety rather than flood immunity (the other is Tintenbar Road to Rifle Range Road).

However, there were stories mentioned in the debate about drivers new to the area hitting flood waters at speed, before barriers had been erected.

Councillors spoke about the need to get the flooding situation sorted while

Ross Lane was still under Council control, rather than leaving it to the vagaries of government.

In a separate motion, they voted unanimously not to let this handover be finalised until the Ross Lane flooding issue had been resolved.

Regarding Cr Jeff Johnson’s motion, they voted to receive a report from staff on options to prevent Ross Lane from flooding, while also investigating funding options for the completion of the work, including grant funding opportunities.

Cr Phil Meehan was absent for the vote.

Cr Jeff Johnson told The Echo, ‘It was pleasing to get unanimous support, and I look forward to seeing this initiative progressed’.

He added, ‘I was a bit concerned that, with the proposal for these regional roads to be “handed back” to the state government, the much-needed works would be delayed indefinitely’.

Filmmaker’s doco tackles weight problems The latest doco by filmmaker and SAE Creative Media Institute graduate, Gerald Rascionato, details his transformation in body and lifestyle, and a weight loss of 35 kilograms.

Gerald graduated from SAE Byron Bay in 2010 with a Bachelor of Film Production, and has since gone on to direct Lionsgate and Universal’s Open Water 3: Cage Dive,

among others.

According to SAE, Gerald has enlisted the help of current SAE students who are able to incorporate his Down Size Me project as part of their degrees.

‘I went on a big weightloss journey a couple of years ago – it taught me a lot about self-control, discipline, and eating in a specific window in order to maximise weight

loss’, Gerald explained.

‘One Meal A Day (OMAD) put me in the best shape of my life. It has been life changing for me, and I want to create a documentary on everyday Australians who are following the same journey’.

Pay it forward ‘When I was a student at SAE, all I wanted to do was work on movies, so

that’s why I want to pay it forward to up-and-coming filmmakers’.

Seenalekshmi, who is studying for a Bachelor of Film Production at SAE, is working as cinematographer on the film.

‘Given Gerald went to SAE and he’s done several feature films already, I had full confidence in the idea he pitched to us’, Seenalekshmi said.

Sidney Poitier – A true sentinel of hope and inspiration

he new 2022–2023 councillor students, along with the re-elected ones, will be attending their first class, this Thursday February 3, at the Council Chambers in Mullum from 9am.

The first meeting has generally a lot more of the back patting, accolades, platitudes and selfcongratulatory guff than Council watchers have to suffer at normal meetings.

Yes, we’re all at the ‘Getting to know you’ stage, as Julie Andrews sung in the 1956 Rodgers and Hammerstein hit, The King And I. But the dispensing of power and responsibility is where the real action is.

Staff powers will be delegated, oaths sworn, advisory committees created, councillor representatives determined, and all sorts of things will be adopted and affirmed.

One document authored by staff, the Draft Code of Meeting Practice, proposes to prohibit the public from asking questions at Council meetings.

Public access precedes Council meetings, which are aimed at providing residents, developers and lobbyists a platform to address Council.

Report authors Ralph James and Heather Sills say the changes they propose are ‘non-mandatory provisions’, and justify their rationale by saying, ‘There is an array of avenues for the community to bring matters to Council attention short of it being posed as a question or a submission at a meeting.’

It’s a move that seems at odds with supporting democracy and increasing accountability.

But bugger that – it’s 2022! The age of tyrants is well upon us.

Newly elected councillors will also be asked adopt Council’s delegation powers. These are thresholds around whether councillors, or Council staff, decide large DAs, as well as how to manage legal proceedings and the like.

The King And I The staff proposal for powers of delegation would continue to grant General Manager Mark Arnold powers to determine ‘designated development’ applications that have an estimated value below $10,000,000 ‘or for subdivision of land that would create 20 or more lots’.

The only safeguard is Council’s Planning Review Committee.

Another interesting, and lengthy, report, by planning director Shannon Burt, paints a bleak picture of an overworked, under-resourced planning staff.

With a never-ending thirst for more profit, the state government are placing what appears unrealistic goals on council planning staff across NSW. So much so, that Ms Burt believes her department is at risk of being taken over by an administrator.

As such, she requests/recommends that councillors provide what can only be described as unqualified support for the quality of staffing services.

Is it fair on the incoming councillors to provide such support, given they are unfamiliar with said staff performance?

Good luck to all councillors on Thursday.

Remember – they are there to represent those who elected them, and should not be the tools of staff or the state government.

‘Poitier came from poverty, but his presence so enriched the world’.

I

n an earlier piece I wrote about celluloid heroes, men and women who enthralled and excited my youthful imaginations.

One of my heroes was Sidney Poitier, a black man born in Miami, USA, and raised in poverty on Cat Island in the Bahamas.

Therefore, it was with profound sadness that I learnt of the news of the recent death of this sentinel of hope and inspiration at the age of 94.

In his autobiographical work, The Measure of a Man, Poitier wrote with honesty and reverence of his early life on Cat Island, learning life lessons at the feet of his mother and father and the siblings whom he shared the early stages of his youthful development with.

His father was a tomato farmer who raised his family in a house fashioned out of whatever materials that the island offered up.

Poitier’s father sold most of the tomatoes he grew to vendors in Florida, but in 1936 the state of Florida placed an embargo on tomatoes grown in the Bahamas, forcing the Poitiers to relocate to Nassau in search of a new life.

At the age of 14, Poitier made his way from Nassau to Florida setting in train a journey that would take him to fame and fortune around the globe.

He was the first black man to win the coveted Academy Award for best male actor for his role in Lillies of the Field (1963).

Poitier never made a movie that I didn’t enjoy, and I number among my favourites, To Sir with Love, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, A Patch of Blue, In the Heat of the Night and the telemovie Separate but Equal.

Poitier never forgot his beginnings and dedicated his life to the civil rights movement and often used his own funds to support the movement including Freedom Summer, the 1964 black voting rights campaign.

The movie Mississippi Burning is loosely based on Freedom Summer, especially the murder investigation of three students, James Chaney, a black American from Mississippi, and two Jewish students from New York City: Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner.

The murders were a part of the litany of violence waged against black Americans by white supremacists in the deep south of America since the introduction of slavery.

Poitier also joined fellow black celebrities, Harry Belafonte, and Jackie Robinson, to support the African Airlift Program, a college education program dedicated to raising funds to help support hundreds of Kenyan students attend college in the US. Barack Obama Sr was one of the students to benefit from the program and studied economics at the University of Hawaii at Manoa where he met and married fellow student Stanley Ann Dunham. In August, 1961, the couple gave birth to son Barack Obama II and the rest is history!

By one of those serendipitous quirks of fate, I got the opportunity to meet Sidney Poitier in 1987.

After attending a conference in Vancouver, Canada, a friend and colleague decided to visit the famous ski resort of Whistler, just a short scenic two-hour drive east of Vancouver.

As we drove into the village of Whistler, I noticed the local golf course and, being an avid golfer,

I decided to visit the pro shop to purchase a souvenir, a shirt. As we left the pro shop, I caught a glimpse of someone who looked like Poitier as he was finishing up on the 18th green.

I was beyond excited and after confirming that it was indeed Poitier, I patiently waited until he and his group walked off the green before introducing myself and my colleague, who stood in muted adoring silence and sheer affection, for this wonderful man whom former US President Barack Obama described as ‘a singular talent who epitomised dignity and grace’.

I told him that I was a big fan, and admired his civil rights work and he graciously took the time to chat before he was whisked away by his minders.

Poitier came from poverty, but his presence so enriched the world.

He was a destroyer of barriers and fought tirelessly alongside his soul brother Harry Belafonte to make the world a better place.

Denzel Washington, who won the 2002 Academy Award for Training Day on the same night that Sidney Poitier received an Honorary Oscar for his body of work, reflected on the role that Poitier played in breaking down barriers in the entertainment world for Black Americans and other peoples of colour.

He said, ‘I’ll always be chasing you, Sidney. I’ll always be following in your footsteps. There’s nothing I would rather do, sir; God bless you’.

Water security in The proposed Dunoon Dam is a twentieth-century ‘solution’ to a twenty-first-century problem. Undoubtedly, a dam would benefit someone – just not the community, Aboriginal heritage, the ecosystem, or already struggling wildlife.

There are simpler, more cost-effective solutions to our water supply challenges – demand reduction being the easiest. We currently water our gardens, wash our clothes, dirty dishes, and flush good drinking water, down the toilet.

Rous County Council (RCC) could spend $220 million of our money, plus the usual cost blowout, on a huge and destructive dam.

Or they could significantly increase the existing subsidy to instal tanks and greywater systems making it affordable for everyone.

This would provide far greater water security in our region and benefit the local small-business economy.

Think of all the tank, pump, and greywater system suppliers and plumbers that would benefit from it.

Dams put our water resources into the hands of government or private industry, rather than keeping them in the hands of individuals and community. Our whole planet is in trouble because

of a twentieth-century megadevelopment mindset – we need to stop. It is time to do things differently.

Exterminating Angel The Exterminating Angel of COVID is passing over our Shire. Mercifully few have been exterminated, but many, mostly unvaccinated people, have been ill – some extremely ill and needing hospitalisation.

If you are unvaccinated, you have 24 times the likelihood of a vaccinated person of being taken to intensive care – and some will die.

But in the face of this, many unvaccinated people are doubling down and reinforcing their reasons for remaining unvaccinated.

What inspired me to write is that a friend told me his oldest mate had said vaccinated people are ‘shedding’ COVID, and giving the virus to unvaccinated people.

I researched this and found it to be utter bollocks.

The sad thing is most unvaccinated people live in echo chambers and only hear like-minded voices.

There are good angels in the straight world collecting and reporting COVID information for us every day. And there are good overworked angels in frontline medicine

caring for us and saving our lives when we get really sick.

In the mid 1800s, the average English life expectancy was 30 years. Our generation is expected to live three times that age. So far in my 73 years I’ve managed to dodge polio, diphtheria, whooping cough, small pox, tetanus, yellow fever, black water fever, cholera and COVID – all thanks to vaccination.

Risks to planning It is very surprising that The Echo’s story on 19 January ‘Council’s planning powers at risk of removal’ has apparently not been taken seriously by our councillors or the community as a whole.

The issue raised by Council’s director Sustainable Environment and Economy, Shannon Burt, is a real risk to our Shire and there cannot be any complacency by our new Council.

Late last year the state government released a policy supposedly designed to hasten planning approvals. It claimed that in addition to delays by councils, many problems were the result of the slow responses of government agencies to provide statutory

comments. As a result part of the policy is to restrict timing for agency submissions. A failure to comment will be taken as support for the development. This in itself is a problem as some significant government agencies, as with Council, are under-resourced yet have an important role to play in advising on matters such as road safety and environmental consequences of critical development proposals.

The real pressure, however, will be on local councils, such as Byron, which have difficulty in hiring sufficient staff to deal promptly with development applications.

Minister Stokes issued a ‘Statement of Expectations’ to incoming councils to ‘set clear time frames in which councils are expected to assess and determine regional and local planning proposals’. As Shannon Burt has implied, the threat to our council’s planning powers is obvious – Council will have to rush through decisions to meet what may be unrealistic timelines or risk losing planning powers.

This will be no idle threat.

The state government used development approval delays several years ago as a reason to remove many planning powers and place them with the newly created Joint Regional Planning Panel.

There is no doubt that there have been unacceptable local delays in planning approvals, particularly modest homeowner proposals, and Council must make it a priority to streamline the existing systems or risk having its role replaced by an unelected administrator.

Mullum leads I admire Mullum Cares (Echo 26 January) for its recycling projects to reduce COVIDtesting plastic going into landfill. I hope that when it gets more support and sponsors it will be able to help the planet on a larger scale. There are a few things to tackle.

The first one would be to stop focus on the end of the plastics journey. Many countries throw plastic into rivers and tips. The Mediterranean has plastic bags floating in it, trillions of plastic bottles are floating in oceans and landfill, and all those fun glow-sticks head there too.

We have millions of tonnes of plastic from hospitals from single use-items related to COVID as well as normal hospital procedures (get a cut and go to Emergency and watch how much plastic

goes into the bins). Multiply that by the number of hospitals in the world and it’s staggering.

Supermarkets have started packaging fruit in cardboard instead of plastic and have a long way to go in eliminating plastic packaging. Everything bought online comes in plastic: bags, spacing, and bracing.

Cars are made with plastic and all parts are plastic bagged. Building supplies are wrapped in plastic. Plane parts are wrapped in plastic.

Skyscrapers are built with plastic.

The focus of action needs to go to the origin of the plastics: the MANUFACTURERS. After years of arguing they will use organic products for packaging. Hospital supplies will go in sterile non-plastic packaging. All drinks are ▶ Continued on next page

Public transport is virtually non-existent in Byron Shire and the region as those looking for convenient services and fast connections will know. One of the disbenefits of not having public transport is the impact on mobility-challenged people and their restricted access to life opportunities.

Impacts that ultimately ripple out through families, households, businesses and communities.

A big step forward in public transport development would be to provide convenient links between largely isolated bus services as a way of making public transport more connected, convenient, and accessible. In particular between Brunswick Valley services and those in the south of the Shire.

We have a good rail line that can provide a rail shuttle, cycling, and walking link between Byron Bay and Mullumbimby. Connecting the town centres directly makes for convenient access and transfers without having to contribute to or confront road traffic. Council’s Multi Use Rail Corridor Study put the cost at $12.6 million dollars. By comparison, the proposed $78 million spend at

the Ewingsdale interchange only induces further car dependence and does not deliver any public transport infrastructure or services.

Spending choices made about public transport need to take more account of all movement needs in the community. To do otherwise would be to solidify discriminatory barriers already faced by the young, aged, disabled, visitors, others unable to drive, and the many who want to make sustainable transport choices.

Embarrassing defeat The new Ballina Council does not seem to be going to plan for the ‘purple shirt’ brigade seen during the recent local government elections. A failed motion moved by Cr Bruem of the ‘purple shirts’ has resulted in an embarrassing defeat for their leader, the newly installed mayor, Cr Sharon Cadwallader. She and her cohort were defeated six votes to four on a motion to hold a by-election instead of a simple ‘countback’ in order to fill a vacancy in the event of a retirement or resignation of any sitting councillor.

When moving the motion Cr Bruem, a keen supporter

of the mayor, indicated that a ‘countback’ would result in the vacant seat being filled by a member of the ALP. Not on his sweet nellie, anybody but. Blinded by his prejudice against the ALP, the good councillor did not take into account the cost to the ratepayers of holding a by-election against the cost of a ‘countback’ where the candidate with the next highest number of votes fills the vacancy. Simple and cheap.

On moving the motion Cr Bruem must have thought he could not lose. Fortunately for Ballina he did lose, six votes to four. A failed National, as is the current mayor, Cr Bruem missed out on gaining preselection to represent the Nationals for the state seat of Lismore prior to the last state election. Having failed to gain preselection, Cr Bruem appealed, no doubt having never considered defeat a possibility. His appeal was dismissed.

And so Ballina Council now has to deal with two failed Nationals together with two lap-dog conservatives one of whom tells us that she is her own woman. It is amazing what a candidate will spruik during an election ▶ Continued on page 14

ep, it’s just about all over for the Pandemic bar some afterthought viral restrictions

by NSW premier Perrottet, sometimes described as ‘backflipping’. It’s part of his ‘yet-to-be-made-public’ plan for ‘living with the dreaded SARS-CoV-2 virus’, just like mumps and measles, where the shareholders and/or customers of NSW will prosper – or at least that’s the stunning narrative from NSW state and federal governments aided and abetted by their mates in the media who are ‘talking it up’ to make it the new reality.

When Omicron’s over, she’ll be right mate! Back to school and back to the mine!

The premier’s plan’s being sold to us on the basis that we have high vaccination rates and that the current Omicron variant is a ‘relatively mild illness’. Nothing to worry about. It’ll be gone soon. No more nasty bug varieties. We’re running out of Greek letters.

Accountability?

No mention of the fact that only a small percentage of the world is vaccinated making us all vulnerable to any number of new overseas variants which can be brought here by plane or cruise ship. No mention of the fact that the lucky folks who get just a mild dose of the bug can wind up with Long COVID. And no mention of the cost of Long COVID to the economy and to those who have the bug. Not a sausage!

So where’s the premier’s cunning plan so we can hold him to account just as he wasn’t for the iCare fiasco.

Remember what he told us when Gladys (remember Gladys?) left and he was anointed to state’s emperor position. Arrogant words letting the public service health experts well and truly know their place. John Howard puppet Father ‘Tet’ knows best! ‘We will decide..!’

I have no problem with the nation getting vaccinated, that’s three jabs. Yes, a very tiny proportion end up with complications. Most can be treated although you wouldn’t know it from the Dr Strangelove antivax lobby with its ‘it-will-interfere-withyour-precious-bodily-fluids’ or it ‘can-make-your-bodymagnetic-and-is-killing-more -people-than-the-virus-itself’, arguments which wind up as www.echo.net.au

fodder for Snopes or clickbait for media exploitation.

Complications and side-effects accompany virtually all medical treatments including antibiotics and vaccinations. Granted, there’s some awful history here but the benefits far outweigh the downside, something we seem to have forgotten with eyes on the current scourge. We have learned from our mistakes.

Lobotomies are no longer popular, well one hopes not!

Vaccinations reduce impact of COVID The evidence is clear. Vaccination for SARS-CoV-2 infections leads to very significant reductions in hospitalisations and intensive care admissions even with the Omicron variant and some vaccination escape. But vaccination doesn’t mean total protection against COVID-19 or Long COVID. Mutations can avoid the vaccine-induced immune response. Until we have welldeveloped treatments for COVID infections, which are in the pipleline and due March, we shouldn’t put the nation at risk by letting the virus rip as Father Tet has done in NSW with preventative half measures and knee-jerk responses under the rubric of post hoc ‘adaptation’.

Long COVID Long COVID affects somewhere between ten and 30 per cent of those who get the bug. A minor infection may have major consequences. Scientists are currently trying to work out who is vulnerable and what risk factors give you the ‘long play’ version of the infection.

And while they are trying to figure it out, ‘is it wise to let the pandemic rip in NSW’ particularly when we’ve lost control of the bug because we don’t collect critical information about infection rates and vaccination status?

How can you make properly-informed decisions

without good information?

Long COVID is an insidious disease, or perhaps group of diseases, in which multiple systems of the body are affected including the brain.

‘Brain fog’ is a common signal for Long COVID and often includes overwhelming, persistent fatigue.

Difficulty in word finding and maintaining attention, capacity to manipulate multiple pieces of information, remembering recent events and slowed speed of processing of information form part of the problem. There is a higher incidence in those who carry other risk factors such as those for vascular disease. And there is growing evidence of inflammatory processes in brain fluids even in the absence of evidence of virus in the brain itself.

Some scientists have suggested that the immune system, stimulated by the virus, may act in a pathological way against the person.

A lot is not known. Similar symptoms are found in other diseases and its important to have good differential diagnosis to rule out a COVID cause.

In the meantime, a precautionary approach to SARS-CoV-2 management is warranted. Father Tet must publish his plan so it can be subject to careful scrutiny. His magnus opus must include the evidence on which he has based his 23 January ‘return to school’ plan with only a quarter of students vaccinated.

In the absence of full disclosure and failure to look ahead, misinformation and falsehoods will flourish.

Matters of life and death and lifelong brain impairment from COVID will be the new reality. And people will think, who in the political class gives a RAT’S..!

Wild garden musings Thomas Gooch

s a landscape architect, my practice at the start of a project often involves asking: ‘What wants to happen?’ It’s an intuitive listening at its first

CHESS by Ian Rogers In the early days of the 84th Tata supertournament in Wijk aan Zee, organiser Jeroen van den Berg was pessimistic that the event would reach Sunday’s finish line.

Two of the players’ seconds had tested positive for Covid near the start of the event and later Daniil Dubov’s girlfriend suffered the same diagnosis. In addition, the tournament’s administrative staff had to be sent home en masse due to cases in the main office.

Yet all the players stayed negative and the tournament was able to proceed, with the only blip being Dubov forfeiting his game in round seven rather than wear a mask during play while waiting on a PCR test result.

The organisers had planned only for rapid antigen tests just before each rest day, but stepped up to PCR tests, with RATs self-administered daily, while the tournament staff were tested twice a day.

Attention then turned to the games, with Carlsen, playing in an event he has won eight times, overcoming a slow start to take the lead.

However, just when van den Berg thought everything was going well, out of the blue almost all passenger flights from Europe to China (and return) were cancelled due to preOlympic Covid fears.

This left teenager Zhu Jiner, making her debut in the second

assisted by the rich pen of past years’ experience.

This practice is intimately seen (or experienced) through the discipline of gardening; by gardeners and across the garden world. The regular act of engaging with soil, plants, and landscape is inherently a relationship with the land asking: What wants to happen?

The gardener is a custodian of ‘place’ of sorts, and monitors changes in that place such as climate variance, soil moisture, insect attack, plant growth, etc.

Bringing a response to each observation that causes a continual adjustment of that place. Thus, typically, the gardener has a multifaceted relationship from gentle to rigorous with the garden for the hope of creating a refulgent landscape, seasonal highlights and inspiration to all who visit. At the same time many gardeners look to encourage biodiversity, planting contrasts and a balance between species.

In Europe, the Naturalistic Planting movement embodies this sensibility.

Photos by Claire Takacs Where master gardeners intimately know their plant selection, plant performance, soil conditions, and preferred habitat. These are often with exotic planting species, layered and planted to create drifts, varying heights and contrast akin to a wild ecology of sorts.

Although typically heavily curated, intentional, and all the while – beautiful!

Claire Takacs, an internationally renowned photographer, is someone who regularly visits the world’s premier gardens.

Photographing naturalistic planting and varying master gardeners such as Mat Reese (Malverlys), Tom Coward (Gravetye Manor), Cassian Schmidt (Hermannshof), and Fergus Garrett (Great Dixter). All display this ability to have a relationship with plants and the landscape. A listening followed by action, backed by deep knowledge and years of hard work.

Not to presume their own practice, but their gardens exude rhythms found in nature that begin to emulate rich ecologies that abound with life. A certain ‘Wild’ that we respond to and find ourselves directly brushing up against when walking within.

Claire, who pursues beauty through her photography (and life), that can be seen in her most recent book Wild, indelibly captures exquisite moments in these types of gardens. Moments that really are the final expression of the gardener’s relationship with plants and place. With sunlight as her medium, and the gardens as her canvas, she herself has

a nuanced relationship with the gardens.

Arriving at dawn before sunrise, she is attentive to both the composition of the garden and the light arcing across the sky bouncing off leaf and flower. In this way the movement of the sun’s rays is constant, so must be her response. With deft feet moving throughout the garden on foot, with drone, and ladder she captures moments that feel as if she’s thrown up sunlight from her pocket to reveal the garden in a way the gardener could never thought be shared with others.

They’re intimate, layered, felt, and all garnered through her own practice of listening and responding. If she came to a site with a theme in mind, she would miss beauty found at select places and angles, she would not have the ability to reveal the intention and hidden moments only a gardener knows and feels when deep in the garden bed.

Landscape revival A recent trip to Mullumbimby for the first time led me to meeting a local couple who regenerate bushland around the Byron Shire. The conversation quickly led to the general populace not always having an understanding of what a strong natural system is.

It’s not enough to simply have trees such as camphor laurel creating verdant valleys. Regeneration requires the management and bias of and for native species

towards a balanced ecology.

Returning the landscape back from logged or banana plantations to native regrowth with strata and climatic ecologies.

My trip also revealed, like many places, the Byron Shire has an existing and historical need to manage weeds and regenerate parts of the Shire.

Historically weed management was prompted with a big push from residents to remove the likes of lantana and groundsel to avoid fines. Not such a bad prompt really, having witnessed the property I stayed at having benefitted.

This all raises the question: How, through a regenerative lens, can we curate beautiful regenerated landscapes? Can we see regeneration as an act of custodianship that also pursues beauty? Can we promote flowering times, layers, structure, and contrasts that inspire native planting to be more than a set-and-forget approach? One that allows for a relationship and ongoing management of site.

Perhaps we should simply call on the master gardeners of the world to contribute to regeneration projects or perhaps books like Wild might inspire a regenerated Byron Shire full of diversity and beauty. Perhaps it’s more of us returning to the land as custodians and starting by asking: What wants to happen? Then stewarding regenerative and beautiful landscapes for Byron Shire residents and all flora and fauna. www.echo.net.au

GLOBAL RIPPLE PROJECTS GUNU, FIJI 2014 Global Ripple started after the founder, Jacqui Boyett, was living amongst the locals in the remote Gunu Village and noticed serious health and wellbeing issues. Many Ņü ƋĘå ĬŅϱĬŸ Ƶåųå Ÿƚý åųĜĹč üųŅĵ åƻƋųåĵå Ş±ĜĹ ŅƵĜĹč ƋŅ tooth decay. The neighbouring village boat was their only way to get to the mainland; however it was always full.

Global Ripple helped fund a large boat and lifejackets for the village. This allowed locals to not only access medical care but also sell their art and goods to purchase essentials on the mainland. We also paid for emergency dental work for those who needed it.

THUMAN, RASUWA, NEPAL 2021–2022

WAKU, NEPAL 2015 Funded the building of tin-sheet shelters for 180 people when the earthquake devastated their villages.

Letters / Community at Work Invasion Day sadness and debate about the date Q The unrelenting opposition of many Aboriginal people to the date of Australia Day is a tribute to their resolve to keep the circumstances of settlement and their suffering before us all. Changing the date is the next necessary step towards meaningful reconciliation. In their discussion of alternative dates, Prof and Dr Lewis ask ‘Is there any Australia Day date that could bypass the deep offence of colonial invasion?’ They conclude: ‘The 26 January date is as good and as bad as any other’.

There is, I believe, a date that should be acceptable to both Aboriginal and other Australians. It would commemorate the first and biggest step yet made towards real reconciliation. It is 27

May, the date in 1967 of the referendum that extended citizenship rights to Aboriginal people. It received the greatest ‘Yes’ vote, 91 per cent, of any referendum. It is a measure and reminder of what we can be, that we can right wrongs if we act in good faith and with goodwill.

What to make of a newly discovered pulsing radiation source?

n Australian-led team scanning the cosmic melee for radio waves has discovered a mysterious object unlike anything astronomers have seen before. The object, GLEAM-XJ162759.5-523504, releases a giant burst of energy that crosses our line of sight and, roughly three times an hour, is one of the brightest radio sources in the sky.

‘This object was appearing and disappearing over a few hours during our observations,’ says Natasha Hurley-Walker of Curtin University, leader of the team that made the discovery. ‘That was completely unexpected. It was kind of spooky for an astronomer because there’s nothing known in the sky that does that.’

Unfortunately, it’s fairly clear these signals aren’t the work of little green men. As Hurley-Walker explains, the pulses of radiation come across a wide range of frequencies, which rules out an artificial signal, pointing instead to some kind of natural process we don’t yet fully understand.

So, what actually is GLEAM-XJ162759.5-523504?

We know it’s a radio transient, and these aren’t unknown to science.

‘A radio transient is something that we see in radio waves that switches on and then off again,’ says Hurley-Walker, ‘and there have actually been a lot of these detected over the years.’

But a key feature of radio transients, she says, is that they ‘come and go’. They appear, disappear, and leave observing astronomers stumped, because there’s not enough observational data to understand what might have made the signal.

‘That’s a shame,’ says HurleyWalker, ‘because we would really like to understand what’s generating these kinds of things.

They’re often going to come from very high-energy processes in the universe. And being able to understand that would allow us to probe really extreme physics, like www.echo.net.au

The object in question was discovered by Tyrone O’Doherty, a Curtin University honours student supervised by Hurley-Walker, using the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) telescope in outback Western Australia, in one of the most radio-silent parts of the continent. O’Doherty developed a new software that looks at pairs of observations and the differences between them, helping to identify unusual bursts of radiation.

The team were amazed by what they discovered.

GLEAM-XJ162759.5-523504 is incredibly bright – ‘really extreme’, according to Hurley-Walker.

But even more peculiar was the relatively slow pulse-rate of this strange object. ‘Slow transients’, like supernovae, might appear over the course of a few days and disappear after a few months.

‘Fast transients’, like pulsars, flash on and off within seconds or milliseconds. Something that turns on for a minute, however, is really quite weird.

‘If you do all of the mathematics, you find that these things shouldn’t have enough power to produce these kinds of radio waves every 20 minutes,’ says Hurley-Walker.

So, what do they reckon is causing this strange pattern of energy pulses?

‘What we think is that the magnetic field lines are somehow twisted and that this neutron star has undergone some kind of outburst or activity that is causing a temporary production of radio waves that makes it strong enough to produce something every 20 minutes.’

One option is that it could be a predicted astrophysical object – never before actually observed in the skies – called an ‘ultra-long period magnetar’.

‘It’s a type of slowly spinning neutron star that has been predicted to exist theoretically,’ she says. ‘But nobody expected to directly detect one like this because we didn’t expect them to be so bright.

‘Somehow it’s converting magnetic energy to radio waves much more effectively than anything we’ve seen before.’

Another option is that it could be a white dwarf, a collapsed star remnant that might be producing a pulsar.

‘But that’s quite unusual as well; we only know of one white dwarf pulsar, and nothing as bright as this.’

Or, it could be something entirely new to science. Finding an entirely new cosmic object is an exceptionally rare gift for any astronomer, let alone an honours student on the cusp of his academic career, as O’Doherty was at the time of discovery.

‘It was quite surreal to have found something like this,’ he says.

So, what next? The team are currently monitoring the object, which has ceased pulsing, to see if it switches back on.

‘It’s such an exciting thing to find a new class of object, so I’m pretty sure if we find it switching back on again, the eyes of the world will turn to that little patch of sky,’ says Hurley-Walker. In the meantime, she also hopes to find more of them.

The Square Kilometre Array (SKA), the still under-construction mega-telescope that will encompass sites in Australia and South Africa, will offer scientists an unprecedented window into the vast cosmic wilds, comprising the largest radio telescope array ever constructed. For Hurley-Walker, O’Doherty and their team, the SKA will massively enhance their ability to look for more of these mysterious, pulsing objects – and potentially other paradigmshifting discoveries.

‘It’s really important to keep our minds open to the possibilities that we haven’t considered,’ says Hurley-Walker. ‘No-one really thought of looking for objects on this timescale because we couldn’t think of any mechanisms that produce them – and yet they exist.

‘We will be making discoveries like this all the time. The universe is full of wonders.’

or years, scientists have been trying to understand what makes a person prone to believing in dangerous conspiracy theories. It’s never been more important: as the pandemic bears on, misinformation is driving people to avoid potentially lifesaving vaccines or treatments, and has cleft huge rifts in the fabric of society, alienating people from family, friends and community.

Now, a US study has found that people suffering from depression are much more likely to believe misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines. That means misinformation is most effective when targeted at vulnerable people – a common tactic used by conspiracy theorists and political subcultures.

The study, published in JAMA, surveyed more than 15,000 US adults across the nation’s 50 states.

The researchers measured depressive symptoms against a person’s likelihood to agree with at least one of four false statements about COVID-19 vaccines.

They found that nearly 30 per cent of people with depression were prone to believing misinformation, compared with around 15 per cent of people without it.

Respondents who believed at least one of the four misleading statements were also much less likely to be vaccinated. Finally, the team asked 2,809 of the survey respondents to answer a subsequent survey one to two months later; they found that people who reported depressive symptoms in the first survey were more likely to endorse misinformation months later.

person’s individual set of beliefs), the connection stood up.

The results matter: if almost a third of all Americans with depression are vulnerable to vaccine misinformation, that means they’re more likely to resist vaccination and other public health advice, putting them at higher risk of serious illness and death. And mood disorders are already known to be associated with worse COVID-19 outcomes in hospital.

So, why does depression make a person more vulnerable to misinformation?

The researchers think it has to do with negativity bias. This is the tendency to focus more on negative information than positive information, an evolutionary quirk of our species that keeps us constantly aware of danger, and which would have served us well in the threatladen plains of our evolutionary past.

But while negativity bias is present in all of us, ‘individuals with major depressive symptoms often exhibit a more pronounced negativity bias,’ write the authors.

This tendency to focus on the negative can make people cynical about the status quo, suspicious of authority, and ultimately cause them to underestimate – or simply not believe – the benefits of vaccinations.

THE HEELING CIRCLE Some people make an impression. Heeling Dean was one of them.

Sadly she died last week, and I wanted to dedicate my Soapbox to her in honour of a truly unique individual. In honour of a woman who was seemingly unself-conscious.

Who was witchy wise but childlike at the same time. Who was raw, and honest, and both ordinary and unusual. Who was serious and funny. Who could be as easygoing as she could be difficult. Great women are complex. And Heeling was a properly complex woman.

A woman who knew how to be a friend to other women.

Her friendships were deep and passionate. You were either in her sunshine or her shade – there wasn’t really anywhere else.

She was drawn to community. She told me once she’d been in the JWs. I could see how she would have loved the fellowship but I couldn’t imagine her sticking to the rules.

I couldn’t imagine her pink hair and her fuck-you attitude being dominated by a doctrine that dictated life choices. I guess that’s why spirituality was so important to her. She had a connection but she found a way to live it without the restrictive rules. Free spirits don’t do well living in jars with the lid tightly shut.

After leaving the Jehovah’s she found her place in our esoteric spiritual community. A place much more resonant for someone like Heeling. A place where a naked Heeling would comfortably wander on her verandah chatting to friends on her Facebook Live about whatever her latest clay workshop had brought up or issue she was working through. Nothing was off limits. I relate to that. I share the same lack of filter. It draws people in. There is a certain radiance in the dangerous open-hearted full-tilt approach to how she lived her life.

I remember going there for a tarot reading she had gifted me for my 50th birthday. I was a few years late in showing up because it’s not something I am comfortable with. I turn up at her gorgeous shack in the hills and she asks me to change a lightbulb because at five foot nothing she can’t reach. Then she said, ‘Well you have to go out and

come in again! We can’t do a reading when you’ve done a job for me.’ So I leave and turn up a second time. Then she asks, ‘Have you ever had a foot reading?’ No, I have never had a foot reading. She takes in my feet and admires what she calls my ‘power toe’. Apparently it’s quite something.

She made me feel nurtured and cared for, something she put a lot of her self into. She made me love my big toes.

Every show I did around here she would be in the front row. Even though I often make jokes about some of the ideas she held dear, she never took it personally.

She could laugh at herself. The new-age punk priestess gathered an entourage for every outing. She laughed with her whole body. She saw her role as some sort of divine glue – connecting those who may have never connected.

Drawing in people who may not have even liked each other, but were united by the fact Heeling had invited them in: to a show, to a clay-making circle, to a lunch.

They dare not say No to Heeling! She didn’t wait for life to happen; Heeling orchestrated it. She was no bystander.

She was right there in the middle of the action.

Even when she was unconscious the woman was making waves. International headlines just a few weeks ago read ‘Prominent Byron Bay anti-vax tarot reader in ICU with COVID’.

I felt protective of Heeling. It felt wrong to write about someone who was unable to defend themselves or give consent. To criticise her choices when she was paying so heavily for them. I was appalled at the lack of privacy, and the opportunism of the media singling out Heeling, but for a moment she was famous. And her tribe gathered around her.

I write this as one of her vaccinated friends, who respected her choice, but dearly wished that perhaps she had made another. I write this because she was an extraordinarily kind, eccentric, generous-hearted, and kooky-as-Fuck kick-arse woman.

Goodbye, Heeling Dean.

I get the feeling you’ll be back.

WHAT’S THE BROUHAHA ABOUT KELLY? brouhaha /bru-ha-ha/ noun – a noisy and overexcited reaction or response to something

Growing up in in regional South Australia, Kelly Brouhaha’s family moved around a lot as her dad worked with a bank that posted him all over the state.

In a not uncommon story Kelly was the ‘new kid’ in about six different primary schools.

‘When we did the final move I basically refused to get in the car unless Mum bought me a drum kit (child logic, right!).’

Kelly ended up with a guitar instead and spent most of her high-school years slumped over it practising to distract herself from the loneliness of being yet again the new kid. ‘I found music incredibly healing and it’s been with me since.’

Described as a more soulful Amy Winehouse, Brouhaha will play the Old Milk Factory Lismore on Friday. Seven caught up with her when she arrived in town last weekend.

What music did you listen to growing up?

As a young kid I used to sit up every morning watching Rage, writing down the countdown with my best mate.

I was seven when I discovered The Spice Girls and I was OBSESSED with sugar pop. S Club 7, Backstreet Boys – all the late ‘90s glitter had to offer. In the early 2000s, I discovered my all-time favourites like The Waifs, Missy Higgins, John Butler, Clare Bowditch, etc. It was a great era for acoustic singer-songwriter type music.

What do you enjoy more: gigging or recording?

I’d normally say gigging, but lately that’s been kind of stressful. I’m making my next record with Julz Parker from Hussy Hicks, and recording this album basically means spending a whole bunch of time with really excellent humans in a magical forest cabin and enjoying campfires in the evening. After a couple of years’ isolation, recording right now is pretty excellent!

But I do enjoy most being out on the road, in Pamela Vanderson (my 1992 Toyota Hiace). Over the last four years or so I’ve spent a lot of time with Beccy Cole on her Aussie Road Crew tours throughout outback Australia, and those campfire concerts with my mates are definitely my favourite way to make music.

How old were you when you got into music?

I was 11 when I started learning guitar. I went on to a performing-arts high school and was involved in choir and jazz band and the high school musical each year.

A lot of my mentors were professional musicians and they encouraged me to keep studying past high school. I enrolled in a TAFE course and studied for a further three years, which is where I met Libby O’Donovan, who became a mentor of mine and taught me just about everything I know about performing professionally. Years later she invited me to come and work with her and her wife Beccy Cole and I’ve been touring with them since. It’s been a very cool apprenticeship!

What have you got for audiences at your local gig?

I think now more than ever it’s really important that we bring people back together. I think people have mentally struggled more than we all realise, more than the financial or medical implications have cost us. I know people are still getting sick and dying and that’s awful, but I also think the isolation and instability of the economic climate for small businesses has really brought people undone. I think community is so so important to help us all get through this next hurdle with our mental health still intact. So for anyone who feels safe enough to leave the house, and I completely understand anyone’s reasons for not coming out, I’ll be showing up and inviting anyone who needs to be with people to get that need met. I’ll bring my friends along and we’ll sing songs and we’ll laugh together and cry together, and maybe at the end of the night we’ll all feel 10 per cent better about the state of the world.

How does performing make you feel?

I always feel really grounded when I perform. For me it’s like a meditation. All my thoughts slow down and it’s really the best kind of mindfulness and the most fun meditation I’ve found. I think it’s the thing that’s kept me steady since I was a kid. Music really is the best kind of healing.

What is the key message you want people to get from a show?

That feeling feelings is a really good thing.

What are your near and distant future plans?

Step 1: Book the gigs.

Step 2: Try to stay sane while COVID messes with the gigs.

Step 3: If all else fails, find friends with campfires.

What’s at the top of your bucket list?

I’d love to buy a tiny house and find a little pocket of land in the Northern Rivers that doesn’t flood to put it on. As much as I love touring and living in the van, I’d love a place to come home to and recoup between projects – you know with maybe some luxuries like a flushing toilet and an oven.

How has COVID changed your life?

Oh man, COVID has been brutal. I was living in a van touring when COVID hit so I was forced to find a rental I could afford and spent a whole bunch of time alone, which really wasn’t great mentally or creatively. Woodland Valley Farm – Jodie Viccars and Fabian Fabbro Fabian Fabbro and Jodie Viccars took on the property in 2016 with the purpose of regenerating the land and waterways. Although they purchased the old dairy farm while working their regular jobs, in 2019 they jumped on in, focusing solely on the farm.

With a commitment to regeneration they introduced 120 Hyline Brown hens along with 30 head of Speckle Park cattle. They call this combination of poultry and cattle their ‘regeneration team’ – ideal for rotational grazing and for delivering incredible fertiliser to help restore the land.

After selling the eggs at the farmers’ markets and seeing how well they were received, they increased their flock to 1,800 hens and 400 ducks with four mobile laying caravans that are moved weekly.

This team effort is helping to nurture the property back to being an oasis of biological diversity, recently winning Woodland Valley Farm the Tweed Sustainability Award for Regenerative Agriculture 2021.

The poultry are completely pasture raised – they have sunlight, grass, and dirt, and are never caged or restrained in any way, allowing chickens to behave as chickens like to do.

‘The nutrient profile is exponentially higher than supermarket eggs. They also have nice vibrant yolks as www.echo.net.au

nature intended them to be,’ they say.

‘The food miles are another big factor. The farthest our eggs travel is to Mullum Farmers Markets, so

31 kilometres, and they are collected daily.

‘It’s not ideal for eggs to sit at many different travel points before reaching the shelves. As time goes on the

egg degrades, the taste and nutrition decrease as does the physical component of the egg.

‘We have always sold exclusively at farmers’ markets; it is a much better way to engage with the community. People who shop at the market are really passionate about food and supporting local food security and we love to be a part of that.’

Fabian and Jodie’s passion is to regenerate their land, and the chickens with their eggs have delivered a financially viable way to continue this invaluable work.

You will also notice the packaging they use is 100 per cent recycled post-consumer PET – reclaimed global waste. It is fully recycled and fully recyclable and they encourage customers to return their cartons to be restocked.
