The erection of another Byron sculpture

‘I got out there first – Dane was on his way out – and within 10 seconds of being out there I was sitting on the board and felt this massive bump. It attacked me from the side – I didn’t see it coming,’ he told The Echo. ‘It was smashing me around for about five seconds – and had an intensely tight grip on me, gnawing into me.’

He said the shark left as quickly as it came. ‘It got what it wanted – it took a big chunk out of my leg, and off it swam.’ Not realising how big the bite was, Sam headed back to shore ‘fairly frantically’, together with Dane. ▶ Continued on page 6

Just months after the infamous ‘disco dong’ sculpture was unveiled on the Bayshore Drive roundabout, Byron Council has plans for another pricey piece of public art. According to the agenda for next week’s council meeting, council is set to sign off on Memento Aestates, an $80,000 installation by Brisbane artist Giovannie Veronesi, to be located in Byron Bay’s redeveloped Railway Park. Made from textured steel and standing at around two metres tall, it is a considerably more modest endeavour than its shiny cousin on Bayshore Drive, despite being $25,000 more expensive. The concept is said to be based on the seed pod of the pandanus plant, a common sight on Byron’s coastal fringe. The council meeting agenda says the sculpture is to be unveiled in October, but The Echo understands there may be a delay of some months owing to a disagreement over the relocation of the Byron Environment Centre (BEC) rotunda in Railway Park, which is likely to hold up the redevelopment. It has been commissioned by Council’s public art panel. The Echo understands that the panel considered a number of designs as part of the tender process, with the final choice coming down to Memento Aestates and a proposal from a local artist that depicted children climbing a tree. ▶ Continued on page 5

It’s an ill wind that blows nobody any good. While Cylone Oma wreaked havoc with last weekend’s Byron Surf Festival, this surf pilot waves ‘hi’ to his mum at Coorabell. But things weren’t so bleak on the gournd – or in the water with close to a full program running for the Surf Festival. While the twilight movies were moved to the Beach Hotel, and the surf art market and the freestyle surf comp couldn’t run because of the cyclone, organiser James McMillan was philosphical, saying that dealing with the weather was ‘just part of surfing; you wake up in the morning and roll the dice. This time we woke up and Cyclone Oma was knocking on the door.’ Photo Tao Jones

He credits his quick-thinking friends for his survival, along with a yoga breathing technique he believes slowed his metabolism down enough to cope with the massive blood loss he sustained. Sam had paddled out with his friend Dane Davidson at around 6.30 in the morning.
