Millennial mania: Splendour ’18
Main pic: Gang Of Youths had the crowd in rapture. From the top: Khalid tapped into the ‘young dumb and broke’ demographic. These mysterious tall iridescent women had an unfair advantage getting a good view. Triple J’s ‘Mayor of Splendour’ basks in the glory of his subjects. Heaving masses flooded the amphitheatre for Kendrik Lamar’s headline set. Find loads more photos and coverage of Splendour online at – go to www.echo.net.au/splendour-in-the-queue. Hi. My name is Joy and am studying at Lismore’s SCU. And I’m a millennial. I was again tasked by The Echo’s elders with reporting Splendour, a large-scale festival where around 37,000 young peeps congregated to revel around awesome international and national artists on repurposed canefields in Yelgun. So what was the buzz for Splen-
dour ’18? The disarray, chaos and attitude of punk was a theme for this year’s lineup. US hardcore punk band The Bronx put on a great show with a ton of energy and enthusiasm. There was a solid mosh; however, it seemed to be full of people who wanted an excuse to punch each other rather than appreciate the music. One guy was picked up by his waist-long dreadlocks and thrown onto his head. There were a few repeats, which

would seem no danger for millennials as many have the attention span of goldfish. Yet the enthusiasm for punk band DZ Deathrays, an act that has been around for a while, was a little lacklustre. Speaking of repeats, the Dune Rats put on a ripper of a show, as did Hockey Dad. Members of each appeared for Skegss, and were swamped by fans when the show was over.

Skegss put on a brilliant show, inviting Alex the Astronaut to join the band for most of the set. Amyl and the Sniffers graced the Amphitheatre stage at midday on Sunday. And what a show that was. If there’s one thing that girl can do, it is perform – climbing the scaffolding of the stage and spraying the audience with champagne. She’s Aussie anarchy wrapped in a bleachblond mullet. A lot of the bigger, as well as
the more electronic, acts had zero stage presence and seemed to rely on hype. Perhaps that’s the issue with today’s music industry – lots of artists get discovered online, but it’s the endless small gigs that help to build a band’s stage vibe. Live gigs are where the real magic is. Another cause of main acts becoming snoozy is perhaps because they are becoming too big to care? continued on page 2
