The tenth anniversary of the Back to Brunswick Hot Rod Run was celebrated last weekend. Held in memory of Pete Chapouris, this year Pete’s son, Pete Chapouris IV, was a special guest. The event featured daily lunchtime cruises on Friday and Saturday, followed by Sunday’s annual show and shine, complete with a trophy presentation in the park opposite the Hotel Brunswick. Increasing the height and density of the Shire’s retail centres, and creating a new industrial estate next to the Bluesfest site are among the ideas being considered by Byron Council to increase employment opportunities in the Shire. The ideas contained in the Draft
Byron Shire Employment Land Strategy, commissioned by Council, focus on how to accommodate industrial, retail and commercial growth over the next 20 years. The plan, which goes on public exhibition on August 9, relates to land zoned for employment within the Byron local government area (LGA). It is based on research that
shows the current supply of zoned employment land in the Shire is insufficient for the future both in terms of industrial areas and business centres. ‘Delivering employment lands for a sustainable future will require some decisive actions by Council,’ the report states. This includes ‘improving the uti-

Jane Laverty, the head of the NSW Business Chamber’s northern rivers chapter, said Byron was ‘desperate for some more industrial land’. ‘There needs to be enough land continued on page 3
The Byron Masterplan Guidance Group (BMGG), who oversee improvements to the town on behalf of Council, will now employ an official executive and publish formal minutes, which will be published on the group’s Facebook page and uploaded onto Council’s website. It follows issues which arose late last year; Byron Shire Council staff were caught out when they tried to claim that the masterplan group had supported the removal of the Byron Environment Centre’s (BEC) rotunda from Railway Park. This was compounded by the removal of several trees in the park by staff without warning. The masterplan team insisted at the time that they had no knowledge of either plan, and in fact, are not an approving body for such works or decisions. It’s also been confirmed that developer Graham Dunn is now no longer a BMGG member. His membership to the group was brought into question after he lodged a massive $23.18m mixed residential/commercial DA for the town’s CBD. Meanwhile, BEC president and former councillor John Lazarus told The Echo he has been dissatisfied with Council’s transparency over the issues that plagued it late last year. He said, ‘I have continually asked Council to demonstrate the actual alleged community input that has resulted in the extension of the “three” storey area, the extension of the CBD to Butler Street, the potential redevelcontinued on page 2
