A message for Labor, the National Party and the Liberals…
If Adani and corporately owned politicians imagined they had any social licence for the controversial coalmine project in QLD’s Gallilee Basin, that notion would have been well and truly dispelled by Saturday’s nationwide rally. The Byron event on Main Beach drew huge numbers – all dressed in red – as a drone hovered overhead to capture the moment. Organisers said 900 people turned out to make the words Stop Adani in the sand, which exceeded expectations. As such, not one but two exclamation marks had to be added to soak up all the people. Dozens of events took place around the country, including events in Lismore and
Norries Headland, Cabarita. Byron Bay organiser Hannah Navara said she was amazed that more than 900 people came ‘after only expecting 200.’ ‘This is a strong message on the direction we are choosing to take as a nation in unified opposition to #StopAdani’, she said after the event. ‘This is a strong message about the power of community action. Every action we take gains more momentum towards a clean-energy future. Today we stood together with people all over our beautiful country. Thank you to everyone!’ Tweed mayor Katie Milne and MLC Dawn
Walker were among the many Tweed residents who attended the event at Cabarita on Saturday morning.
Pollies attend Spokesperson Angie Gittus said, ‘Tweed people want it known we don’t want this government gifting a billion dollars to dirty fossil fuel. We want to see that investment in the creation of renewable energy jobs. ‘The Adani mine project is financially unsound, a threat to the iconic and irreplaceable Great Barrier Reef and will be a massive contributor to climate change at a time when we desperately need to curb emissions to
protect our planet and our future on it. ‘The national ReachTel poll shows the majority of Australians oppose the Adani coal mine.
Majority opposed ‘Two-thirds of Australians want the QLD government to use its power to veto the loan and stay true to their election promise not to spend public money on Adani’s private railway. ‘We want our politicians to take action on climate change and on Saturday hundreds of Tweed people came together to make their voices heard.’ Photo Orion Sturch
