A New Year of Learning Welcome to our brand new richly packed program for 2016, filled with a vast range of opportunities for your learning pleasure! The Byron Community College is proud to be an important part of the social, cultural, business and vocational life of the Byron Region. In case you don’t know us very well we are a local not-for-profit organisation who have been operating since 1993. Each year we deliver around 500 courses to over 3000 course participants. Our work not only supports many locals to improve skills, talents and opportunities, but is consistently recognised for its diversity and quality by other centres all over Australia. As we look back over the year that was 2015, some of the highlights that stand out for the College include: • We continue to offer up the best range of short courses in the region with great value for money. Each Term we aim to incorporate new offerings for our learners, whilst maintaining lots of old favourites that continue to fill up in record time • We are continuing to develop our National leadership as a Permaculture College including the addition of our locally run Certificate IV in Permaculture in 2016. Our 2015 Permablitz programs were instrumental in transforming the courtyards behind the Mullum Campus and local café, Punch and Daisy. Next time you’re in town, make sure you drop by and take a look at the students amazing work • We have successfully survived a very restricted NSW Government funding model, and are now excited to offer up a number of subsidised vocational places for a majority of our qualifications in 2016. Open to all NSW residents or workers, these funded training places are especially beneficial for anyone who is experiencing tough economic circumstances • We developed our new business mentoring program Business Pathways which is helping many local businesses with their growth and development around the Northern Rivers. This includes a new partnership with the Edmund Barton Centre. This year, our funded places available for the Certificate IV in Small Business Management provide a staple skills boost to help our local economy thrive • We worked with local aged care and childcare centres to give our graduates the most relevant industry training with opportunities straight into employment. The new Certificate III in Individual Support being rolled out this year has both an ageing and a disability stream which is relevant to the rollout of the National Disability Insurance Scheme • We have developed an exciting new partnership with WEA Hunter for a VET FEE-HELP full Diploma in Massage. This qualification which is accepted by the professional massage peak bodies, is being run from our Byron Campus this year. And finally our new website has recently been launched, with an aim to allow a much more seamless online enrolment process. This course is for students who have a current Provide First Aid Certificate OR just wish to learn the CPR unit. The course covers the CPR element, which must be updated each year and applies to all workers who may be required to provide CPR, in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings. Australia’s population is ageing and the North Coast of NSW is a popular place for retirement. If you would like to work in the Aged Care Industry, the Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) is the minimum Nationally Recognised Qualification required to enter this field of work. This course will give you the skills and knowledge to work as a Care Assistant, Nursing Assistant or Home Care Assistant in an Aged Care Facility or within the Community, in what can be a rewarding and fulfilling career. ‘LABOREM SEQUITUR SAPIENTIA’....‘HARD WORK BRINGS SUCCESS’ Running a small business from home for 25 years while my children were growing up was wonderful but a year ago I had a strong desire to do something different. I have always wanted to work in the health industry after briefly being involved in hospital work back in the 1980’s. I had strong doubts being in my early 50’s and out of the workforce for so long. I decided to do an aged care course and chose the Byron Community College as my place of learning. I had no idea this choice would transform my life in so many ways. The course was well planned and led by inspiring mentors who had a wealth of knowledge, wisdom and experience. Whenever I needed extra help or support, the College was incredibly supportive. An added bonus was the fantastic people I met through the College. Forward 12 months later, I have a permanent part time position at a local facility that I absolutely love and am constantly challenged by in the most positive way. I was offered the job while I was on work experience. I have a greater sense of self-esteem and a consistent income. The whole experience has taught me we can do anything we set our minds to and that it is never too late to achieve your dreams.

Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40110) will ensure you have the skills and knowledge to prepare, teach and assess accredited courses in your field of expertise. This 18 week blended delivery course consists of face to face workshops and online participation between workshops. It is suitable for people with vocational experience but no previous training experience or for those with training experience who prefer some face to face contact with the trainer. This course is being run in conjunction with the Lismore and Ballina Community Colleges and the face to face sessions will be delivered in Lismore Face to face workshops on 8th February, 21st and 22nd March, 2nd and 3rd May then seven weeks online study with the course finishing on 7th June. CERTIFICATE IV IN TRAINING AND ASSESSMENT (TAE40110)
DIPLOMA OF VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING (TAE50111)
Diploma of Vocational Education and Training (TAE50111) will ensure you have the skills and knowledge to prepare, teach and assess accredited courses in your field of expertise. If you are a qualified, practicing VET trainer looking to seriously enhance your professional development without biting off more than you can chew, this course will suit you. The course consists of three modules adding up to a Diploma of Vocational Education and Training, studied in a blended face-to-face and online mode, over a full school year. The face to face sessions will be delivered in beautiful Byron Bay. Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40110 or equivalent) is a prerequisite. You will need to be actively involved in teaching and assessing in a VET environment for the practical component. The online component is a class-based, facilitated, flexible delivery through a moodle. There are no set times but you are expected to log in for at least a short session each week. 3 sessions of 2 day face to face workshops on 15th & 16th February, 16th & 17th May, 15th & 16th August each session will be followed by 12 weeks online study with the course finishing on 4th November. QUALIFICATION UPGRADES

From time to time the Industries and peak bodies that govern the VET system review the Training Packages for different industry areas. Updates to qualifications are often the result. When training packages change some previous qualifications contain units that are no longer equivalent to the new ones. This means that students holding older versions of qualifications will often need to UPGRADE their qualification. Our tutors are fully trained to assess your previous experience and qualifications and you may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Remedial massage comprises of advanced massage techniques to treat a variety of common musculoskeletal ailments or injuries. Completion of this qualification prepares future practitioners with the knowledge and skills to develop and deliver a comprehensive treatment plan based on client evaluation. A “hands-on” course for anyone seeking work within a larger health service or to become a self-employed practitioner. As an older person, relatively new to digital photography, I can’t stress enough how important it is to constantly train, retrain and improve your skills. To take part in photographic workshops is a chance to do just that. I have taken part in a few now and enjoyed every one. You interact with other photographers, exchange knowledge and get inspired with new ideas. This is where the Byron Community College plays an important role. It offers affordable courses, run over two days. The Tutors are well known professional photographers with excellent tutorial skills, they inspirie and teach at the same time. Something, you can’t take for granted. You are learning in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere and in well equipped modern rooms. There are no more then 10 Participants in each workshop, so working around each other is a breeze. Also, I like to add, having more interested people wanting to participate in workshops, it would inspire more professional photographers to come to Byron or Mullumbimby to teach. We have very creative communities and can inspire and learn from each other when coming together in a college environment. A win, win situation. I have always had an interest in growing food. Growing up in the inner west in Sydney I spent my afternoons and holidays with my Polish grandmother in her garden where she grew a lot of her own food. I was very passionate about gardening and loved creating ponds, planting fruit trees and digging veggie patches. I later moved into Bush Regeneration. I worked in this field for 15 years. After becoming a father I realised I needed a change in direction. I wanted my kids to know where their food came from so I started converting my average suburban block into an aquaponics garden. For the past 2 years I have been developing Aquaponics systems and designing edible landscapes as well as running Aquaponics courses.
