EMPOWERING Business Women Ten years ago, a group of local business people met monthly in Harvest café to “ferment” business ideas, whilst the old bakery wafted sourdough from below. This group grew into the Sourdough Business Pathways Group. Sourdough Business Pathways is committed to building the economy of the Northern Rivers region by creating more jobs through mentoring, project support and learning. The organisation is open to both men and women, however the region’s business women have a strong voice and desired a meeting place of their own, to grow, share and network. Sourdough Business Women was conceived during a Sourdough Business Pathways lunch. The idea of creating a positive, supportive space with informal and formal learning was born. Months later Sourdough Business Women was created. Launching into the year with programs providing motivation and empowerment to women in business in the local region, this initiative is gathering women and momentum. Following community consultation, several focus areas have been identified to support regional women. These specific spheres of development include communities of practice, networking, mentoring, skills growth, places to share knowledge and support.
• Sourdough Business Women Hub, a free group meets on the first Wednesday of every month to provide the opportunity for networking. The initial events and speakers have enjoyed great feedback. • The highly regarded Sourdough Business Pathways mentoring program forms the basis of the mentoring offered by Sourdough Business Women. • Developing skills growth through partnerships with Byron Community College, Southern Cross University and other educational organisations to help emerging business women navigate evolving, business frontiers is a continuing initiative. • The next program to launch will be SBW’s learning community. This will be an opportunity to join the learning program from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, U-Lab: Leading Profound Innovation for a More Sustainable World. SBW is excited to be hosting this MITx online course in a group setting and has been thrilled with the uptake by local women. The introductory session is being held on July 17 at the BCC campus in Mullumbimby. To find out more, register your interest and share in the success www.sbp.org.au

After several different careers that created stability but little stimulation toward my desire to be of service to others I came across the Byron Community College course program. My eyes fell upon Certificate 3 in Individual Support and I walked over to the college to sign up – a week later I was sitting in the classroom. Kellie and Bridget have been taking us through the world of creating a better life for those incapable of supporting themselves. Their extensive experience, patience and wisdom have created a strong foundation for our class to go out and ease the suffering of others. As a result and in the midst of my studies I have gained employment supporting people with disabilities and am using learned skills in my day to day work. Every step of the way the college staff have devoted themselves to student wellbeing and the fee free scholarship associated with this course gave me the financial freedom to focus on study.

Nicole Haggerty is a highly experienced and qualified teacher of IT - she understands the need for patience, engaging students and is known to speak in English not gobbledegook! In 1988 she was a secretary working for Xerox, each had an electronic typewriter and there was one Mac desktop that sat on its own desk and was only used by the Engineer once a week when he came to check his “electronic mail”. She coveted the Mac and all the wonders it beheld. Before long she was the envy of all secretaries when given special permission to type some letters on it. It was this initial interest that led her to undertake a graduate degree in computing – she knew how to use them but wanted to know what was in the black box and how it all worked.
14
Unbelievably it wasn’t until 2007 that she bought her first computer and it had to be a Mac. She has been converting people ever since and teaching with Byron College for over eight years. Byron Community College Term 3 2017
