Byron Community College Term 1 2015

From the Director...

Welcome all to our first Byron Community College program for 2015. This celebrates another landmark for our organisation: 21 years of offering education and engagement with the residents of Byron Shire. We are not a fly-by-night, opportunistic organisation, but a not-for-profit community based organisation putting long term investment back into this local area. We’re proud to be part of the fabric of this community, delivering a wide range of educational opportunities that enrich lives and provide new options for many. This could be a short course in art, food growing, languages or cooking, to a full qualification in areas such as training and assessment, small business, permaculture, aged care or children’s services. We take a holistic and individual approach to the needs of our students, we focus on each person’s interests and learning needs as well as their lifestyle and career aspirations. We also take care to look after individuals who may not feel that education has served them well in the past. This includes many disadvantaged people such as those with a disability, lack of employment, single parents or Aboriginal learners. Also, those who need assistance with literacy and numeracy.

We try to offer all this in the most affordable way. Some full qualifications can seem like a fairly major expense at first glance, but I encourage you to really check out your value for money. It’s often amazing how fees can be found; the support of family, friends and even lending possibilities (such as a NILS loan through the Byron Community Centre). This year the NSW Government is funding low fee, short courses, focusses on accredited skill sets or part qualifications. Check out the great options available on page 5. A wide range of adult learning is important for our mental, emotional and spiritual health, and for our social, economic and environmental wellbeing. Not only just for coping or surviving, but to enhance our feelings of being blessed to be alive here in this beautiful place. We all need time to think, create and to expand our capacity to act at higher and deeper level. This supports us to nurture ourselves, those around us and ultimately the whole environment. Happy learning choices! Richard Vinycomb

In 2008 I left my secure office job deciding to go back to massage therapy after some 18 years. I embarked on the Certificate 4 in Massage Therapy with Byron College. I enjoyed the part time course so much I continued on to complete the Diploma of Remedial Massage the following year. The tutors were amazing, all being passionate knowledgeable therapists themselves and my fellow students were fun to be with each day. The two year study took me into part time work in two of the local spas and as Barbara Stephens, one of the tutors said “a great place to do your apprenticeship”. I’ve never looked back and I am still working in the industry with my own private clinic and contract work. Every three years I am obliged to update my First Aid and conveniently I can do that with Byron College as well. Byron Region Community College RTO: 90013

I try to do a few courses each year and this year has been better than ever. Earlier this year I completed the Small Business Management Skills set. This was offered to people over the age of 45 and took four units from the full Certificate IV in Small Business course. Apart from learning a lot, it was fun. Who would have thought? Whilst my mother was visiting recently, I grabbed two places in the Cooking with Snowy course. Snowy was great; very entertaining, free with his cooking secrets and the food was amazing. I’m also looking forward to my upcoming Fine Art Photography course and hope one day to get up the courage to do Mandy Nolan’s Stand Up Comedy course.

I think the college is a great amenity for the area and the range of courses offered is fantastic and I’m always impressed with the quality of the teaching faculty.

Byron Community College Term 1 2015

Tutor Profile: Susan Kaden Introduction to Portrait Sculpting

Sculptor Susan Kaden began studying sculpture at UTAS in 1998, specializing in bronze casting. She completed a Master of Contemporary Art from UTAS in 2011. Since 2009 while completing an outdoor commission of four busts in bronze and sandstone for Brisbane, Susan travelled to Europe and USA, to focus on skills development in creating public art, particularly portrait and figure. Four bronze and sandstone busts were installed in 2012. In 2013 Susan returned to Italy, to create a monument of two figures, to be installed early 2015 in Brisbane. During time in Italy, she was mentored by Marcello Giorgi, who specializes in Classic Sculpture and in this time learnt many points of reference for creation of figurative sculpture. Susan enjoys sharing skills and love of sculpture. Susan anticipates her future work to combine historical techniques with contemporary expression, however Susan believes that, if basic skills are not learned then artists risk producing work that will not endure.

Working with recycled materials salvaged from local farms and industrial depots, the skills of welder Peter Nielsen came in uber handy and the sculptures began to take shape. Totems were erected that told the story of the land that they came from, corrugated screens were designed to create a funky storage area for our water tanks and bins, and gorgeous boulders were brought in to lend an organic edge to the area. On one of the hottest weekends of November, local cob-oven building guru Anneke de Graaf ran a 2-day workshop, which has resulted in the College being the proud recipient of our very own cob oven. Although the clay will take a few months to get dry enough for the oven to be utilised, it is already a star attraction to the courtyard and blends in beautifully with the surrounding sculptures. We recommend you come down and take a look when you’re next close by!!

I guess as adults we forget about the little child in all of us, and forget to have fun and expand our own experiences, especially if we have children of our own; we get caught up in helping them and forget ourselves.

I recently enjoyed a one day course on Art Therapy, it not only helped me remember to take time to energize myself by doing things I really enjoy, but this also has a flow on effect to all my family and friends. The best thing we can all do for ourselves and family and friends is to encourage them to keep on learning and trying new experiences.

Byron Community College Term 1 2015

Adult LeaRner’s Week

To celebrate adult learner’s week last year, we ran a competition inviting students past and present to share stories about their learning experiences with us. We loved reading the stories – all of them so different; it was hard to choose a winner. Thank you to everyone who shared their learning story with us – we were certainly inspired by your words and hope that these will encourage more people to take the plunge and learn something new.

1st prize winner received a $200 Course Voucher There are multiple reasons why I love Byron Community College 1. The amazing connections I have made with both my peers and teachers alike. 2. The course and its content. 3. The ecological design of the buildings and the overall emphasis on sustainability. I am studying a Certificate 3 in Permaculture and I cannot recommend this course enough, it has been such an eye opening, interactive, informative and fun experience. The knowledge I have gained truly is invaluable and the confidence I have developed through this learning and friendships I have made over this period are really special and just keep on growing. There are a wide range of courses available at Byron Community College where diversity is celebrated so I strongly encourage anyone thinking of studying to enrol, you won’t look back!

Tai O’Conner Cert III Permaculture 2014

I love Byron Community College for the diverse range of courses, ease and accessibility. The staff and tutors have always been friendly, supportive, knowledgeable and patient. I have done three cooking courses and learned from all of them, broadening my culinary range and resulting in greater confidence in the kitchen. I have also done a creative writing course that, as a sufferer of depressive, panic and anxiety disorders, has given me a wonderful outlet that benefits me in many ways. The latest course I did was cake decorating in February with Lauren Blong, this course gave me the inspiration and confidence I needed to create the wedding cake for my dear friend’s wedding in March. I approached my first course with no confidence and very low self-esteem, one of the greatest gifts I have received through my participation in these courses has been a new found belief in myself.

3rd prize winner received a $50 Course Voucher - Jenny Smith Cert III in Aged Care 2014 The fear of flying was the same as the fear for learning. You’re too old to keep up, past it, were the words going round in my head. First day nerves, sweat, fear, quietly sit in the back row, avoid eye contact, pray that I am not asked to speak. A great chance to see who’s the confident, extrovert, shy, reserved and hyper types. As I look around it’s a mix, not all young ones as I imagined. I feel relieved but still apprehensive. Six months later I’ve made it thru with a little help from the friends I’ve met in class. The class tutors are friendly, straightforward, patient, knowledgeable and ready to keep us all in line, and open our minds to their chosen passion. I love adult education because it has opened my horizons not only for work, knowledge but new friendships in my community.
