Byron Community College Term 4 2015
Term 3 has been filled with the usual bunch of exciting and creative adult learning activities here at the College. Students of all ages and backgrounds have been taking the plunge and learning new skills in a range of areas from Tech Savvy Seniors to Belly Dancing. Our 2015 VET (accredited training) students have also been busy. July saw our Certificate III Permaculture students spending two days transforming the courtyard behind the Punch and Judy café in Mullumbimby, using the ‘Permablitz’ component of the course to turn a bare courtyard into an urban food landscape. This publicly exposed project has already been noticed by visiting locals, with three of the students quickly being offered jobs, and other local businesses keen to be the location for the next Permablitz program (see page 4). With new ventures for the College starting soon, including an intensive 11 day Permaculture Design Course in November and a Certificate IV in Permaculture in 2016, we envisage a lot more projects like this going ahead.
Not wanting to miss out on the action, our Certificate III in Horticulture students were given the opportunity to organize a Mediterranean inspired ‘Herb Arvo’ in the courtyard at the Mullum Campus of the College. Learning valuable skills along the way they planned, costed and coordinated the day, which was a great success. Herb information sheets were designed and distributed and amazing herb displays were set up around the cob oven. Family and friends of the students were invited to the event and everyone came together to create, cook and share the delicious herb pizzas.
These are just a couple of examples of the multitude of learning processes that have been happening here over the past few months. With such a successful Term 3 under our belt we’re looking forward to watching your learning journey unfold too, when you enrol in some of the exciting learning possibilities offered here in our Term 4 program. See you soon :-) Enrol online at www.byroncollege.org.au

Anna Drury started off her Permaculture journey in the libraries of Student Profile her friend’s University in Canberra. Whilst her friends completed Anna Drury their studies, she would get her hands on any Permaculture-related Certificate III in material that she could – and she hadn’t even enrolled in a course Permaculture 2014 yet. One year on, she moved north to enrol in the Certificate III in Permaculture at the Byron Community College, which resulted in completely changing her way of thinking and living. Anna had a strong understanding of theory from her 12 months of self-directed learning but felt she lacked confidence in the more practical side of permaculture. The highly practical nature of the course meant that she was able to establish a strong physical connection to the theory and her practical confidence grew. Through her studies she discovered her passion for irrigation and water related work, and has since designed and set up the aquaponics system at the Mullumbimby Community Gardens. The wide array of teaching methods delivered by the two lead and guest tutors provided the students with a range of fresh ideas, and a well-balanced delivery of the content. Anna and her group also found that the experience of becoming part of the Community Gardens was one of the highlights of the course, and is something that continues beyond the course completion. Anna’s advice for anyone thinking of enrolling in a permaculture course are: “It will be the best thing you ever do and it will change your life. The skills you gain are invaluable”.

Student Profile Peter O’Connor Argentinian Tango & Golf for Beginners
The 2 courses I chose both required movement, concentration and social interaction. All good elements to integrate into many learning experiences. The first was Argentinian Tango with Esther who was a very communicative and experienced teacher. While I could dance the traditional ballroom steps and rock and roll, learning the tango was a totally new, different dance with plenty of challenges. The second was Golf at Ocean Shores with Chris. He is a patient and encouraging teacher with many useful techniques to master this challenging game. Thanks to the College I am now continuing with both activities and enjoying them very much.
