Pat Grier Shares his Secrets
At the recent Sourdough/Business Pathways lunch at the Macadamia Castle, Pat Grier shared the secrets of his business career and the path that took him from a modest background in Zimbabwe to the success he is now. Pat was CEO of Ramsay Health and took that organisation from a struggling company with 8 hospitals to the largest private hospital operator in Australia with over 100 hospitals worldwide, over 30,000 employees and a turnover exceeding $3Billion. He now sits on the Ramsay Board and is chair of ESTIA Health, a Public Company that owns and runs aged care centres. He now lives in Newrybar and has a deep love for our region. When asked why he became a founder member of the Sourdough Group he responded “I have had a great life and done fairly well in what I love - business. I now live in the most beautiful part of Australia where two of my three kids have businesses and where we have a quirky community that suits my personality well. We do have a real issue with unemployment, welfare dependency and low levels of economic activity and that is something I would like to do something about.” Pat continued “The real driver of jobs and economic activity in this region is small business and it seemed to me that if we can stimulate that sector then we will be creating sustainable and meaningful jobs. Sourdough is a group of volunteers, all experienced in business and all wanting to give back, and are working on ways to stimulate business formation, growth and retention. Business Pathways is an initiative that does just that. It is managed by the Byron Region Community College and funded by a couple of generous philanthropists. The program provides advice, training and mentoring to small business and we have quite a number of retired and semi retired business people who can help with business development.” He concluded “Where my skills and experience are compatible I really enjoy working with small business and seeing the difference it can make to their viability and growth- it is part of my giving back to the community. I also enjoy seeing many other experienced business people supporting the Pathways mentoring programme. ” Business Pathways is always happy to talk to businesses that could use a helping hand and also to experienced business people who may be prepared to assist by providing mentoring and technical information or if you would like to be informed about upcoming activities Contact Paul Jameson paulj@byroncollege.org.au or 0408 866 651 Enrol online at www.byroncollege.org.au

BYRON COLLEGE OF PERMACULTURE Byron Community College has a strong history with Permaculture. We have successfully run the Certificate III in Permaculture for the past 6 years, with many of our graduates moving on to exciting opportunities including further studies and employment in the Byron Shire and beyond. We’ve held many successful Permablitz short courses around the local area which have transformed barren spaces to thriving hubs of Permaculture design showcases, plus we added the Certificate IV in Permaculture to our course list for the first time this year. We also run the intensive Permaculture Design Course several times a year, which provides students with the opportunity to be introduced to the world of sustainability and opportunity that Permaculture offers up. 2016 marks the year that the Permaculture Training Package becomes officially endorsed by the National Regulatory bodies. This is an exciting time for the Permaculture movement, but for now whilst we aren’t able to officially advertise what we are offering for next year in the way of Permaculture courses, we can let you know that it’s business as usual. We are in the process of applying for the new Certificate III and IV level courses to run them next year, and plan on getting the information up online and out to everyone as soon as the official word is sent through to us that we can. Stay in touch if you’re interested in finding out more by contacting our friendly staff on 02 6684 3374.
PERMACULTURE DESIGN COURSE
Student Story Terry Gray Permaculture Cert III, Horticulture Cert III & Permaculture Cert IV
10
I moved to the Byron Shire about 6 years ago after falling in love with the area on surfing trips from Sydney. What started out as an interest in organic gardening led me to Byron College as I discovered they were offering the Cert III in Permaculture, which, through life circumstances, I was unable to complete the first time round. In 2014 I came back and gave it another go, this time completing it and then carrying on to study the Certificate III in Horticulture last year. This year I am continuing my studies and am excited to be doing the Certificate IV in Permaculture. I have just had the most incredible learning experiences here at the College. The staff and trainers have given me all the support that I have needed and I have made some life-long friends. The buildings here and the grounds are also really inspiring. One day I would love to be able to teach Permaculture and I believe the College is giving me the opportunity to reach that goal. I could not recommend the Cert III and IV in Permaculture and Cert III in Horticulture highly enough. Byron Community College Term 3 2016

In 2012, when I was in year 10 I started attending Caroline Fischer’s photography workshops on the weekends, whilst still at school. This enabled me to develop skills and build a portfolio which led to me having my photos on the cover of Northerly Magazine a number of times. I gained volunteer work as a photographer in workshops and at the Byron Bay Writer’s Festival and increased my portfolio. My portfolio gained me work experience as 1 of 20 students from across Australia at Animal Logic (where I assisted with The Great Gatsby, Wolverine, Walking with Dinosaurs), I also had work experience at Playstation Mag, ABC 3, Good Game and ABC based on my portfolio. In 2013 I began assisting Caroline Fischer in her workshops. I also furthered my extra curriculum study with Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign at night while I finished year eleven. My portfolio and the skills gained based on courses at Byron Community College allowed me to gain underage entry straight from year eleven into a Diploma of Screen and Media specialising in 3D Animation at SAE. My Diploma (instead of doing year 12) gave me advanced standing into Qantm University and enabled me to complete my Bachelor Degree in 3D Animation specialising in 3D Modelling in fourteen months. Because of my skill set I gained work experience at Alt.FX one of Australia’s top Animation companies. I graduated uni at twenty and wore my Kylo Wren Costume instead of graduation gowns and was head hunted straight from uni to Binyan Studios where I am doing what I love and combining 3D Animation in Environmental Design and Architecture. There are many paths to your destination, Byron Community College made mine more tailored to me and let me focus on the skills I wanted to develop so I can now continue to do what I love. The school classroom was not for me. The College always treated me with respect and as an equal and it allowed my creativity to flow. I still use my skills from Caroline and the design courses and am starting my own design and production company Phoenix Cre8ions. Byron Community College Term 3 2016
