Come meet our staff... We are here to help you :)

Anything is possible...

Byron Community College has been around in its current form since 1993, offering community and vocational courses to adults across the Shire and the greater region. We recently won a national award and are the sixth largest Community College in NSW. Each year 3000 people are enrolled in 500 course offerings. We have a very skilled, experienced passionate teaching and administration team. A very high percentage of course participants rate their experience as extremely satisfied. Our community program is very diverse, lively, healthy, creative and fun. Our Vocational program is useful, work-related, skill focussed and also fun! There is no TAFE in the area so we aim to run as many qualifications as possible. We value ourselves as a sustainable, ethical organisation and receive requests to offer help to other organisations across the nation. In 2012 we were invited to host the 52nd Adult Learning Australia Conference in Byron Bay – a rare privilege for regional Australia, warmly shared and a stimulation of ideas on the theme of community resilience – a very successful and proud moment for our College. We wouldn’t be nearly as successful if it weren’t for the big vote of community confidence in our region and that willingness of learners to choose us. As part of the community, we live here, we value quality education, we support business and employment and we care about assisting people who are experiencing difficulty. As a not for profit organisation we have developed great facilities and continue to invest back into needed programs that are socially inclusive and fall between the cracks. Anything missing from the offerings in the pages of this booklet – let us know. Thanks you for valuing your own learning journey and taking an interest in your adult community education organisation. Choose as soon as you can, then act – pick up the phone or go to the website – you won’t regret it!

GET QUALIFIED THIS YEAR!

Why wait for 2014 when you can enrol today and earn your Nationally Accredited Qualification this year!

Art and creativity has been a continued passion of mine since early childhood. Because I started a family at a young age tertiary education was not an option for many years, plus the logistics of long distance travel for further study also provided too many obstacles. With the discovery that the Byron Community College offers a Certificate III course in Visual Arts I was compelled to sign up and without a doubt it was the best decision I could have ever made. 2012 has been a year filled with sustenance for my soul. To be fully immersed in the creative process over a wide range of mediums, under the guidance of such knowledgeable and supportive teachers, amongst a group of fellow students from a wide range of backgrounds, all in the local town of Mullumbimby. I feel very blessed to have had such an opportunity, both challenging and highly rewarding on a technical and personal level. I would recommend this course to others who may have a desire for creative expression.

Dear Zentvelds team, I would like you thank you for the wonderful barista course held yesterday through Byron Community College. It was very exciting that the course could be delivered in an actual coffee farm, whereas if I had taken it in Brisbane or Gold Coast, I would have very likely stayed in an air conditioned classroom, watching slideshows the whole day. :-) I give special thanks to Andy. She’s is such a knowledgeable and inspiring trainer, and she was very patient and professional towards us. Keep up with the wonderful work! Blessings, Isabela Barista Nov 2012

“My thought, on the way to my first computer class with Byron College was; “Well, this is for Kim (my daughter), so make the best of it, Vera. After all, it can’t be too bad and it is only for 6 days.” So, with this picture in mind, I imagined a rather sombre, perhaps dull and boring class, keeping in mind my dislike of anything to do with technology. To my surprise, I found a teacher who has a lively sense of humour and fun, which made the class enjoyable and without realising it, I found myself really interested in the subject and even mastered Skype, which I use to talk to my daughter and grandchildren in Taiwan.”

Like many people in this area of Australia, I was born in one country, raised in a second, and now live in a third. My interests span as much territory and I have offered, through Byron Community College, courses as varied as Essay Structuring, Archetypes and Tunisian cookery. In a previous part of my life, I was conferred two degrees in psychology and this informs a lot of what I do. My studies gave me the writing experience that led to developing a formula for structuring essays. Psychology also taught me concepts such as archetypes and led to my interests in mythology, and in particular, the Hero Journey. This universal story is incorporated into ‘From Heroes Into Men: A Boy To Manhood Program For Communities’, which aim is that the hero in the journey turns out to be the person in the mirror. Through all my courses, my aim is to provide techniques so that people can go, practice, and master their own ways.

Student Profile: Ryan Marlow

After moving to the Northern Rivers almost 9 yrs ago from the Newcastle area, my employment has always been off and on with different casual positions. My work background was as a Paratrooper in the Army, a Photographer on a Cruise Ship and a Pest Technician baiting termites amongst other things. I had thought about nursing as a career option but was a bit timid about going to University, after not studying for years, so I thought I would take small steps to get there. Cert III in Aged Care with Byron Community College has become the first step and vehicle into a new career. It is going to provide me with enough learning and study to build a foundation for further studies down the track and also gives me the knowledge, understanding and experience to work in a growing field and have the opportunity and privilege to care for our elders. As a man, there are many work opportunities, everywhere within Aged Care. The course is straightforward in it’s delivery and facilitated by teachers who currently do work in the industry, so their “fingers are on the pulse”, giving us the latest information available pertaining to Aged Care.
