Byron Community College Term 3 2015

The Power of Transformation

Last month we had a delightful and delicious wood-fired pizza night to officially open the new Mullumbimby campus cob oven. This event seemed to truly embody what the Byron Community College is really about; that when you combine creative energy, ideas and imaginations, you can create transformation anywhere. Here at the Mullumbimby campus of the College, a few years ago, stood a soulless concrete car park of an abandoned industrial building. Now, through the work of Anneke De Graff and her team skill sharing to build the beautiful cob oven, and Suvira McDonald and his team who joined talents to create the whimsical recycled materials sculptures and funky wall, a community space was created that is now inviting and useful.

Using food and herbs we grew at home and in the campus gardens, including Deb Allard’s delicious artisan mozzarella, we came together as a community, to celebrate the transformation of this previously dead space. Through doing so our community spirit was strengthened. The main ingredients? Creative imaginations, learning and working together. Do you have an area of your life or your community that could do with some transformation? There are a huge range of courses in this brochure that bring together these ingredients that could spark some transformation and bring things to life around you.

What is a Unique Student Identifier - USI?

4

Every year, an estimated three million Australians build and sharpen their skills by undertaking nationally recognised training. From 1 January 2015, the government requires all students doing nationally recognised training to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). This includes students doing Vocational Education Training (VET) in schools. A USI is a reference number made up of numbers and letters. It creates a secure online record of your nationally recognised training that you can access anytime and anywhere, and it’s yours for life.

How to get a USI

It’s free and easy to create your USI and will only take a few minutes of your time. To create one go to www.usi.gov.au If you don’t have access to a computer Byron Community College have set up a computer in the foyer of our Mullumbimby admin office especially for this purpose. Please remember that you will only have to go through this process once. Once obtained this will be your USI for life.

The USI will: • Link a student’s VET achievements, regardless of where in Australia they did the course • Let students easily access secure digital transcripts of their achievements (transcripts will be available from January 2016) • Give students more control over their VET information.

A friend of his did the Certificate III in Aged Care course with Byron College a few years ago and recommended that he give it a try, so earlier this year Richard enrolled to prepare himself for the start of his new career.

Student Profile Richard Fielder Certificate III in Aged Care

So far he has really enjoyed his experiences and enjoys the different teaching styles, through role-play for example, where you get to experience putting yourself in other people’s shoes. Student Profile Tasara Dewhurst Permablitz

“I participated in the Byron Community College Permablitz 2014 course because I saw it as a wonderful opportunity to step into a wholesome world of possibility. I then continued this journey by enrolling in the Cert III in Permaculture. Learning to live off the land gives one a huge sense of power and freedom. We can create our own independent worlds, that work in harmony with the earth, instead of against it. The course gave me all this and more. Every day was joyful and abundant in giggles, I met lifelong friends and felt connected to my community.

I now study in Melbourne, and have a cranking garden, where I get the majority of my veggies from. My urban system is admired by all, and has inspired the birth of many others. The knowledge I gained will enrich my life in many ways and I am forever grateful to have had the opportunity through Byron Community College. Don’t hesitate, you have nothing to lose and a whole lot to gain!”
