The Certificate III in Permaculture students are working on an outdoor structure constructed from Bamboo at the Mullumbimby Community Gardens. The shelter will provide an outdoor facilitation space for the college students when they hold practical classes in the gardens. The space will also be available for community uses such as ceremonies and meditation. The students have been introduced to a wide variety of uses for bamboo in addition to the structure construction including screens, arbours, trellises, tripods, trays and even cutlery. The class has taught them splitting, joining, lashing, ageing, sawing, weaving and carving skills which they can now apply in their own lives and in their future permaculture endeavours. Student Lisa Greenhill made bamboo trays to use in a solar dehydrator and has enjoyed working alongside her fellow students and the skilled tutors. She says she will be able to use these new bamboo skills in her duties as a wwoofer. Paula D Eleuterio Pasini appeared enchanted by the new found knowledge of bamboo saying that the unit provides a great general introduction to working with the material and she would like to travel and spend time in communities that work with it in order to learn more. Tanguy Le Floch worked on a dome structure which could be used for growing vines or for shelter with a shade cloth over it. He has enjoyed the practical, hands on aspect of the class. Tutor Sharron Gibson says that “Bamboo is the most sustainable building material on the planet and one plant can be harvested for up to 100 years. It grows faster than timber and sequesters more carbon from the atmosphere”. Three varieties of bamboo were specifically selected for their building properties – Oldhamii, Brandisii and Bambusa Textilis Gracilis. They were sourced from a local plantation where the students learned appropriate species selection and harvesting techniques. This exciting project is a great example of the wonderful, sustainable world of bamboo. We look forward to seeing the completed structure during Term 4. Enrol online at www.byroncollege.org.au

I’ve had my business for 6 years now, and outsourced where my own knowledge-base was lacking; however I was frustrated when problems arose and I didn’t have full understanding. So, this year I completed the Cert IV in Small Business with Byron Community College which was a juggle struggle at times whilst also running the business, life, and undertaking the course, but I’m so happy I completed it! From the inspiring speakers to the knowledgeable tutors, and the assessments which I was able to base each one on my actual business, my brain is now brimming with ideas for a clearer way forward. The course culminated with each of us writing a comprehensive business and financial plan which was an incredible learning process. I’ve gained so much in-depth knowledge of the workings of my business, processes, improvements needing to be made and identifying areas for growth. The class workshopped each other’s business issues in various areas throughout the course which was incredibly helpful. Being a teacher of social media (another hat I wear) I was able to offer my knowledge and expertise in this arena with the class, and now will be teaching for Byron College in term 4, helping small businesses with Instagram and Pinterest social marketing. I took away so much from this course, and my office vision board now reminds me of this every day; “Constantly think and reflect on your business. Take time each week to think. How can you improve, what can you do?”

Why do I love Byron Community College? Funny you should ask. How did it change my life? After completing the Comedy course I saw my world through another lens…I noticed the funnier side of life. Mandy created a supportive space for self disclosure. I shared stuff I was struggling with, features about myself that I did not like, behavioural traits that others criticised and what pissed me off! After working on these issues my struggles became challenges, my weaknesses became strengths and my own world view became clearer and stronger. Mandy also included the structural stuff like the importance of setting up a joke and the punch line. After all the fun activities I had enough material to draw on to write a script. The performance….the icing on the cake !
