We are off to a flying start to 2016 here at Byron Community College with the commencement of nine VET (accredited training) courses. We have welcomed the new students who are dedicating their time this year to adult education, and who in doing so, gain valuable new skills that will contribute in meaningful ways to our community. The NSW Government has continued to offer subsidised funding to many eligible students through the Smart and Skilled program, allowing people who may not have otherwise had the opportunity to pursue accredited study. The subsidies cover subjects that are deemed necessary for the creation of new jobs in NSW and are also valuable to the future of our region. We are thrilled to be running the Certificate IV in Permaculture for the first time this year. As passionate advocates of sustainability and local community development, we are proud to add this level of quality education to our growing number of sustainability courses. Also new this year is the addition of two new courses, which replace our highly successful Certificate III in Aged Care. We now offer both the Certificate III in Individual Support (Aged Care) and the Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability). This differentiation in training provides a more specific qualification to students who will be able to work in the industry, either with our ageing population needing an increase of human resources, or with the roll out of the government’s National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Our Certificate IV in Small Business continues to provide local small business owners with the essential skills they will use to run a successful enterprise. The College is dedicated to facilitating small business growth in our community and also offers mentoring through the Business Pathways Program. This program offers participants business advice and support and connects them with retired or semi-retired successful business people who want to contribute to the community by offering their experience and skills via mentoring. Byron Community College highly values adult education and its contribution to healthy individuals and society. We see first-hand the transformative effect that our courses have on people. Face to face learning environments offer students the benefit of new relationships and help to build our close-knit community. We have a number of funded VET courses kicking off this term as well as the usual great variety of short courses and over 15 new courses covering things like Soap making, Pole dancing and Gestalt Therapy. Have a look through the brochure and hopefully we will see you soon for some lifelong learning. Enrol online at www.byroncollege.org.au

Student Story Mac Maderski Certificate III in Aged Care 2015

The course not only offers the necessary skills and knowledge needed to work in the industry but also provides personal development at a sociomulticultural level. It improves our understanding of what it is to care for our elderly and people with disabilities, teaches humility, compassion and patience, which also reflects on the personal, family and community wellbeing. It is a skill set worth learning regardless of our circumstances or background. I have to admit that this course kind of landed in my lap without any preplanning or previous interest in that field. But I can honestly say without a shadow of regret that I’m glad it did and would recommend it to anyone looking to become a carer or further improve their personal development. The professional, flexible and friendly approach by the Byron College staff and an amazing group of students made it a pleasant and memorable experience. I never expected such a high standard of education and support from a small Community College. Byron Region Community College RTO: 90013

What are Foundation Skills?

12

“Foundation skills are the underpinning communication skills required for participation in the workplace, the community and in adult education and training. Language, literacy and numeracy, or LLN, is the traditional way of referring to the ability to speak, listen, read and write in English, and to use mathematical concepts.” Service Skills Australia

Supporting Skills Development in the Service Industries Surveys taken of the LLN levels of Australians in 2006 identified that over half (54%) of Australians aged 15 to 74 years had the prose literacy skills needed to meet the complex demands of everyday life and work. Whilst those figures may have changed in the past decade there is still a great need for additional LLN support within the community. With the State Government funding we received, we were able identify the specific LLN skills challenges that are particular to the industries we offer training in. Individual programs have been developed and embedded into all of our full VET courses with an aim to improve our student’s chances of getting and keeping a job. We know that without adequate skills in these areas, individuals often struggle to demonstrate their competence either during the learning program or once in employment.

Stand Up Comedy

This course will suit you if you are a reasonably confident beginner rather than a novice; can already play through some songs; or have already completed Karl’s Beginners course. What happens for lots of us is we get to the stage of being able to play a few songs, but then get a bit stuck, and don’t know where to go next. What can easily happen then is that we get bored playing the same old things and not progressing. Karl has a bunch of cool things to show you that will enable you to break through that. Additional materials $5. 6 Tue, 26 April to 31 May 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm Mullum Concession: $125 Full Fee: $139

We have updated our system to make things easier and quicker for you to enrol online at www.byroncollege.org.au Give it a try, we would love to hear your feedback.

I love Byron Community College because it encourages us all to challenge our boundaries and be impassioned by the process of learning. I attended Mandy’s Comedy Course and have never looked back. The journey was incredible! By the end, everyone had developed their own style and outlook on comedy and life, bringing a light and fun perspective to the everyday. Life has definitely been changed for the better; as a training doctor I find myself better able to interact and connect with my patients through the funny experiences common to us all, and I can safely say that my ‘dad jokes’ are now second to none. I still continue to experiment with new material and try it out at open mic nights in the area. I love learning from the courage and wit displayed by all the other participants who get up on stage and turn the ordinary into amazing.
