The year that was and the year ahead
2016 has been a massive year with high participation across all our programs. Over 400 courses ran and over 2,500 students learnt new skills and explored their interests. This year, a majority of our vocational students received a fee subsidy through the NSW Government Smart and Skilled initiative, allowing training to be made accessible for those who may not have previously been able to afford full fees. We’re excited to report that permaculture is now a mainstream specialisation for our broader region. This year we successfully ran two Certificate III in Permaculture courses. For one of their projects, students built a bamboo shade structure for the Community Garden. In another they created a beautiful Buddhist Senses garden at the Byron Herb Nursery. In addition to this we ran the Certificate IV in Permaculture from our Mullumbimby campus for the first time. This course attracted a great bunch of students who had the benefit of going out into private and commercial spaces to run their design projects. Another of our significant industry qualifications, Certificate III in Individual Support, ran as a dual stream (Ageing and Disability) for the first time. This allowed students to attain qualifications in both fields at the same time, offering up more work options for 2017 with the roll out of the NDIS. Many students from this qualification and Children’s Services benefitted from extensive work experience throughout their course, which in turn has led to new employment opportunities. With the College being recognised highly on both a regional and a state level, our busy and creative team are continually working to improve our systems to provide the highest quality lifestyle and vocational
programs run conveniently close to home. 2017 sees exciting new offerings such as the Certificate IV in Visual Arts and accredited studies in Microbusiness. We’re also expanding on our small business project hub and mentoring program, leading to real outcomes for new and existing businesses. And along the way, there’s even a plan for new and upgraded premises in Byron Bay to complement our Mullumbimby HQ and accommodate the exciting new activity ahead. We are so blessed in the Byron Region to work with active community businesses and cultural organisations. We have developed key relationships with those with whom we share a common bond, and are seen as the premier adult community education organisation for the Shire. We continue our commitment to investing in our community and providing great benefit to all. Our quality and integrity is supported by Government at all 3 levels and our work has been showcased at conferences nationally. If you have done one or many of our courses, I invite you to come back. If you are a prospective new student, have a good look at these pages or our website and see what is out there for yourself, friends and family. And if you need to be convinced just look at the stories of other students or have a chat to one of our friendly staff. Remember it’s easy and reliable to enrol on-line. Have a great summer, plan your next step in the learning journey, and from all the staff at the College we hope to be seeing you soon.

Student Story Phoebe-Violet Mary Robertson Cert III Childrens services 2016
I love working with children not only is it a fun energetic job, but it’s rewarding in so many ways. I love teaching children skills they will carry with them for life. Enrolling into the Childcare course was not a hard decision as I wanted to further my understanding of connecting with children so I could really offer them the best teaching.
The college offered a sustainable environment with beautiful gardens, a great positive vibe, and a relaxed learning place. The staff and educators who work at the college are all very good at their jobs. If you have any questions, problems or need any help or anything at all, you are more than just supported, they build a positive relationship with each student making you feel comfortable and welcomed. It’s almost like a family. They believe in you and help you to achieve everything you are capable of. I am truly grateful to the staff who not only helped me become an educator and better teacher but who also accepted me as a person and guided me along to a better future and better understanding of children- a passion of mine.

Since, we have also operated a Guesthouse/ Restaurant together and for 7 years our successful Restaurant/Café business La Table in Mullumbimby NSW. This year I commenced teaching Commercial Cookery at Wollongbar TAFE whilst still working as a Freelance Chef. I’m currently organising a food tour for September 2017, to take intimate groups to my home region in Provence, France. My cooking combines French tradition and Modern Mediterranean flavours in a uniquely Australian context, culture and climate. Passion is the main driver in cooking, as it’s a lot about giving and sharing. With the desire to share my passion, knowledge and experience, I look forward to sharing this with students at Byron Community College.
