THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE GETTING TO BLUESFEST EACH YEAR IS GETTING A BABYSITTER… No-one wants to commit to looking after your kid when they’re shooting for a ticket to the biggest show in town. I’d ask my teenagers, but they’ve already been planning on going for the last six months. Of course I could bring my six-year-old, but then I won’t be able to squeeze up front in a sea of sweaty flesh and become part of that wonderful joyous organism called a Bluesfest audience. This year is probably one of my favourite programs. The lineup is so diverse it jumps well beyond the moniker of blues and roots. This year, it’s blues and roots and gospel and vegas and rap and indie pop and avantgarde and indigenous… The inclusion this year of the Boomerang Festival encapsulated within the event creates a wonderful Babooshka effect… The smaller festival within the Festival… a global indigenous arts and cultural festival curated with the passionate fervour and genius of Rhoda Roberts. Roberts has fulfilled her vision this year to broaden the festival-goer experience, creating a quiet place to sit and learn basket weaving, learn traditional dance at a dance workshop or get goosebumps listening to the wisdom of Archie Roach in conversation with Craig Pilkington and Nancy Bates. Then there’s the music… Monday showcases the genius of Brian Wilson – onstage playing an extended set with an 11-piece band playing Pet Sounds, the album that has been called the second-greatest album of all time. That’s incredible. Plus, my friend Clare is playing cello – she’s going to be one of the 11 pieces! It’s not every day one of your friends gets
to play with the Beach Boys! I am not going to miss that one! And the Residents! I saw them 30 years ago when they were skinny boys in black skivvies wearing giant eyeballs on their heads. Sure, I was full to the brim on LSD, but I think that gig altered my brain. I could see the music. In fact, I think I could taste it. Fortunately back then they neither random drug tested, nor did I drive; this year, I’ll be a middle-aged woman having consumed only her two standard glasses of Cab Sav, topped up on fishoil and probiotics, revisiting a favourite experience, and perhaps having a brand-new one. (That fishoil really comes on strong in a mosh pit.) Of course I love The Cat Empire. Who doesn’t? Even people who don’t dance end up dancing. The shrill thrill of that trumpet just pierces through resistance, and before you know it you’re a lather of sweat jumping to the beat. The Cat Empire are a fully guaranteed blast of serotonin. A night with them and you feel good for weeks! And the Blues Brothers band? Well, who doesn’t want to be part of their six-decade mission from God? I have to see The Blind Boys… ever since the first time I saw them, probably 25 years ago, I’ve never failed to be overcome by the spirit of their show, the unbridled joy that comes about in the harmony of their unison. I never thought I’d be clapping along enthusiastically to If I Had a Hammer infected with the joy of Jesus! Such is the power of great gospel! It just floods you with love, even when you’re a hard-hearted atheist. So that show is a definite Yes. But these are people I’ve seen before. This year, alongside the beloved Bluesfest acts who return every few years, people such as Taj Mahal and Eugene Hideaway Bridges there are also a plethora of acts making their Bluesfest debut. Acts such as Melissa Etheridge, whom I had the pleasure of interviewing late last year. Etheridge brings more to her shows than just the music; she brings the passion of her activism, her clear-sightedness and her moral and creative fearlessness. The innovator held responsible for Brit pop – Noel Gallagher, in solo mode with his outfit High Flying Birds. And Rhiannon Giddens, with a voice so remarkable that when I played her CD in the car I couldn’t get out until it was finished. There’s the chilled grooves of UB40, the five-times Grammy winner Kendrick Lamar, and of course Tom Jones. How can you not want to be part of the Jones experience? That man knows how to deliver a show! It’s not unusual, it’s Bluesfest 2016. – Mandy Nolan, Echo entertainment editor

Allen Stone With three albums under his belt, singer/songwriter Allen Stone proves himself deeply devoted to making uncompromisingly soulful music that transcends all pop convention. He is, without a doubt, one of the most breathtaking soul artists in the world today. Drawing inspiration from musical heroes including Stevie Wonder, Stone gracefully blends everything from edgy soul-pop and earthy folk-rock to throwback R&B and Parliament-inspired funk. Archie Roach A Bundjalung/Gunditjmara man, Archie Roach OAM is one of Australia’s beloved, respected and admired singer/songwriters with a voice and sensibility that is this country’s most important songline. A venerable and dignified performer, he captured the hearts and minds of a nation in 1990 with Charcoal Lane and the landmark song Took the Children Away. Now, celebrating the 25th anniversary of Charcoal Lane, which includes the original album remastered plus newly recorded versions of Charcoal Lane material by Paul Kelly and Courtney Barnett, Briggs, Gurrumul and Dewayne Everett-Smith, Dan Sultan and Emma Donovan and others, plus 1990 Triple J ‘Live at the Wireless’ recordings, he has made a triumphant return from incredible adversity and personal pain, bold enough to come back to the stage and the

Charcoal Lane won two ARIA awards, gold status in Australia, was acclaimed in US Rolling Stone’s Top 50 Albums for 1992, and entered into the National Film and Sound Archive’s (NFSA) prestigious Sounds of Australia register. Looking back, it may mean more that Archie’s truthful song and the humanity that made Paul Kelly and Steve Connolly want to produce this first album was honoured with a Human Rights Award. This was a first in Australia. Archie humbly came to understand the special power of music to make people listen, think and feel so very deeply. The secret beating heart of Archie Roach’s music is the connection to his country and people. Archie’s voice, with a tremor like broken moonlight, washes in across the southern ocean. Influenced by gospel, jazz and especially the soulful American singers such as Sam Cooke and Nat King Cole, he was early inspired as a child by a Hank Williams song and which, Archie says, made him pick up a guitar and in time become a songwriter. Brian Wilson ‘The inimitable musical genius Brian Wilson comes to Bluesfest this year performing Pet Sounds plus his greatest hits in an extended set featuring an 11-piece band including original Beach Boys member Al Jardine and long-term member Blondie Chaplin (and my talented friend Clare Yerbury on cello!). Pet Sounds was the groundbreaking psychedelic rock album that featured Wouldn’t It Be Nice, Sloop John B, and God Only Knows – the song that Sir Paul McCartney called ‘the most beautiful song ever written’. Rolling Stone declared it as the Second Greatest Album of All Time (second only to The Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band – is the album that turned the industry on its head, broke all the rules and changed rock’n’roll history, influencing greats including The Beatles, The Who, Radiohead, Elton John, REM and many more. Twenty-fifteen has marked a triumphant return for Brian Wilson with a brand-new solo release No Pier Pressure, proving his talents continue all these years later. Blind Boy Paxton This young blues musician and vocalist making his Bluesfest debut in 2016 sings and plays banjo, guitar, piano, fiddle, harmonica, Cajun accordion, and the bones (percussion). Jerron ‘Blind Boy’ Paxton’s sound is influenced by the likes of Fats Waller and ‘Blind’ Lemon
Jefferson. His musical influences are mainly rooted in the early blues from the 1920s and 30s. Jerron’s family, originally from Louisiana, moved to LA in the 50s, where he grew up before moving to New York City in 2007, where he currently resides. Paxton has an eerie ability to transform traditional jazz, blues, folk, and country into the here and now, and make it real. In addition, he mesmerises audiences with his humour and storytelling. Brotherhood of Blues Brotherhood of the Blues is all about heart and soul. Their friendship with each other and their passion for the blues provide an amazing insight into the life of a person living with a disability and sharing their story through songwriting, music and performance. The band is fronted by three talented young Aboriginal men with various disabilities such as cerebral palsy and autism. Luke Murray, John Cieslak and Zac Paden started writing songs together as part of a music program held at RED Inc, a Lismore-based disability support provider. The Brotherhood of the Blues feature powerful and inspired vocals over a killer rhythm section featuring Harley Bodenham (guitar) and Vincent Bashford (drums) with keyboard and backing vocals performed by renowned music industry veteran Taya Oxley. The band’s tastes are drawn from hip-hop and soul through to Delta blues and beyond, therefore they have an inspired and eclectic sound. The Brotherhood of the Blues will be sharing their story and their love of the blues with you this Easter. Friday and Saturday at Juke Joint

Since the late sixties and early seventies, Chain has steadfastly remained the most influential blues/rock band in Australia. D’Angelo Winner of the Grammy for Best R&B Song Really Love and Best R&B Album for Black Messiah, D’Angelo makes his Bluesfest debut this Easter. Michael D’Angelo Archer was born in Richmond, Virginia, the son of a Pentecostal minister. He began teaching himself piano as a very young child and, at age 18, he won the amateur talent competition at Harlem’s Apollo Theatre three weeks in a row. In 1991, he signed a publishing deal with EMI. D’Angelo’s first major success came in 1994 as a writer/producer, helming the single U Will Know on the Jason’s Lyric soundtrack; that helped lead to the success of his debut solo album, 1995’s Brown Sugar, which went on to sell more than two million copies. With the title track Lady, the album continued to soar on the charts, defining D’Angelo as one of the founding fathers and leading lights of the neo-soul movement of the midto-late 90s, along with artists such as Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill and Maxwell. After more than a decade-long hiatus, D’Angelo returned in December 2014 with his latest and 2016 Grammynominated album Black Messiah, which debuted at number five in its first week of release on the Billboard 200 charts and received critical acclaim. Meet Mick Fleetwood Interview by Mandy Nolan Having to interview Mick Fleetwood was a bit nerve-wracking. The stories that surround the man are bigger than the man himself. And he’s something like six foot six. He lives in remarkable health in Maui, seemingly impervious to the years on the road and of wine, women and song. And massive amounts of cocaine. In his book he admits to snorting what is the equivalent to a line of coke 11 kilometres long. That would be like snorting all the way from my house to Brunswick Heads! Mick Fleetwood made rock’n’roll forged in the same furnace that made Keith Richards. To this day Fleetwood continues to live his life his way, oblivious to his fame. This is not a man who would ever go unnoticed. ‘I don’t have a problem with being famous or whatever, and the whole of Fleetwood Mac are like that. For me I guess it’s because of the name and because I am six foot six. I am not looking to hide. I love meeting people and saying hello.’
So with decades on the road, how has touring changed? ‘Well I guess you could say it’s slightly more
Touring is touring and the only difference now would be that it’s not one big party; when you have time off it’s walking around the park! I keep fit, I get up and I am not hungover, or very rarely, and you are actually more connected to life and to time and your family! In the old days you were very much more into your own thing, and the lifestyle was part of what got out of control. That part is different, playing and touring is playing and touring, the traveling is as tiring, I don’t think it’s any more of a challenge but we have a few years on us – we always travelled as well as you can travel, which alleviates some of the pain – especially on a nice private jet; it certainly helps that you are not lugging around gear!’ So how do the band pick up after a year or so on different projects? ‘We have muscle memory. If you leave it for two years and you don’t rehearse it starts to get a little slack, but we will probably rehearse a couple of days and go and do the same show as the one we have just done. But when we get ready to go on the next
When it comes to playing, Mick likens it to getting back in that favourite car. ‘A good description is when you have a friendly great old car sitting in the garage that happens to be an old thoroughbred in some form; you know what you know and you are who you are and, believe me, I go oh shit we haven’t played as a band in three years, and you go in rehearsal and it’s all still intact. We have been doing it so long, and the backdrop is the music and we play how we play and we just are still there!’ For Bluesfest Vito and Fleetwood are joined by Lenny Castellanos on bass, and Mark Johnston on keys. ‘We have a lot of fun. The band is a shit-hot little unit; it’s definitely a blues band. We are our own personage. On a selfish aspect Rick is a huge advocate of early Fleetwood Mac, particularly the Peter Green years, when were were a fully fledged blues based band, so we have fun cherry-picking some of the old stuff back in the day. I love doing that Rattlesnake Shake and lots of Elmore James stuff. Rick is a fantastic slide player; having said that it’s fair to say that Rick is the guy out front, he has his own identity which is brought into the mix; we have a lot of fun. That’s what we do. For me it’s back to my roots as a blues player!’

The Epic includes a 32-piece orchestra, a 20-person choir, and 17 songs overlaid with a compositional score written by Washington. The album peaked at number five on the US Billboard Jazz Chart, number six on the US Billboard Heatseekers Chart and The New York Times gave the number one spot on their Best Albums of 2015 list. Pulsing underneath is his otherworldly ten-piece band The Next Step. Each member is individually regarded as among the best young musicians on the planet – including bassist Thundercat, and his brother, drummer Ronald Bruner Jr, bassist Miles Mosley, drummer Tony Austin, keyboard player Brandon Coleman, pianist Cameron Graves, and trombonist Ryan Porter. Loving the Kaleo diet Interview by Mandy Nolan Bluesfest festival director Peter Noble discovered Kaleo on a recent trip to their home country Iceland and couldn’t wait to introduce the four-piece band to Bluesfest audiences.
Nashville, a place JJ believes is the perfect melting pot for recording artists.
JJ is the principal songwriter for the Icelandic group who blend folk, blues, country and rock to create a dreamy layered sound.
‘We are fond of Nashville. It’s a special place and it’s certainly changed from being the country place. That is still there but now there is a focus on all kinds of music. Everything is there. We recorded at Blackbird Studios, which is one of the best studios in the world.’
However, don’t think Bjork. Kaleo couldn’t be farther away.
The process of taking a song from concept to playlist is something that intrigues JJ.
‘We’re not anywhere close to that sound. I am inspired by old American music – blues music. My music probably has a more American sound, although we do add our sound to the mix.’
‘I write the music, and then we kind of jam it out. It’s quite different for each song but it usually starts with my bringing the music, and then you have to find the right sounds; you have to treat each song differently. You always are wondering how to make a song the best it can be. You have to let go. It’s a hard thing listening to a mix; it’s like standing in front of your fears and judging yourself. Sometimes you know exactly what you want and sometimes you don’t. You have to have the courage – that’s the most important thing – to admit if something doesn’t work, or take a different direction.’
So if they had to box their sound in a genre, where would Kaleo sit? ‘I don’t try to limit myself to genres. If you do come to the show or listen to the album we’ll be releasing this summer you will hear that we vary from country or folk all the way to some rock’n’roll,’ says JJ. Most recently the band recorded in having performed with Mavis Staples, Etta James, Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland and Little Milton, and has headlined Buddy Guy’s Legends, Chicago, famously known as the premier blues club in the world. Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real Another act making their Australian debut this Easter is Luka Nelson & Promise of the Real, performing their blend of ‘cowboy hippie surf rock’. In 2015 the band, alongside Lukas’s brother Micah Nelson, became Canadian musician Neil Young’s backing band on his thirty-sixth studio album, The Monsanto Years (June 2015), and its accompanying tour. The Monsanto Years debuted in the Billboard Charts at #21 and on the Australian ARIA Albums Charts at #23. Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real have also played with the likes of John Fogerty, Bob Weir, BB King and Bob Dylan. Lukas first picked up the guitar at age 11 to honour a promise he made to his father, legendary country musician Willie Nelson.

So what should newbies to the music of Kaleo expect for their Bluesfest performance? ‘A dynamic show. Like I said, we don’t limit ourselves to one genre, and we like to have the show energetic. Fantastic Mr Negrito Interview by Mandy Nolan Having blown up at SXSW, impressing industry and fans alike, Fantastic Negrito is an exciting and poignant artist not only creating quality, stirring R&B and blues music, but living and standing for the heart of the blues: the desperate, urgent, struggle crafted into raw, honest music.
Turns out he did have musical talent. And certainly a lot more than his fair share. ‘I realised I had an aptitude for instruments, and I was singing and playing and then, four years after I started, I got signed up to a multimillion-dollar record deal!’ Pretty impressive for someone who didn’t pick up an instrument until 17! Xavier, aka Fantastic Negrito, attributes his songwriting talent to the intuitive way he came to music in the first place. ‘I could write songs really easily – that was my saving grace. I was not a technically great player, but I could write. Now I don’t want to learn how to do it (‘technically right’); I just love just doing it.
It was something that was given to me by whatever is out there. I 100 per cent believe for me that it works for me…’ Connection to the universe is key for Negrito. ‘For me it’s all inspiration. When I was writing this latest album that I have released, Last Days of Oakland, I was travelling around the country supporting my EP and I would look at the cities in the US, then I felt things and they inspired me – to me it felt like the last days of Oakland. When you are inspired it’s better than any drug!’ So what is the creative process for Xavier? ‘I don’t really try and push anything. It’s organic, I want it to happen, I want to ride it, I never want to try. When I try it’s terrible, every aspect. It’s about balance and learning. Everyone can be flawed. It’s about using your flaws and trying to make it right.’ Dphrepaulezz got caught up in the streets and the dark side of the music
‘What I came to was that it’s all an illusion, what you have every day, that is a gift and the power you have every day is the power of yourself, and that realisation can move mountains. What I learned was that this is a gift, so make the right choices, and gratitude is everything! Wanting everything is a life of misery; be happy, man! You are here! ‘We all have choices. The beauty, the most difficult thing in the world is being a human being,’ says Xavier. ‘Human beings really, really have the power of the story; I always say I am just as screwed up as anyone else, I just do something with it!’ So what should people be expecting for a show with Fantastic Negrito?

I was an exhibitionist and I didn’t know I had talent. I did a talent show when I was 17. I didn’t know if I had musical talent, but I embarked on a musical path!’

The Blind Boys of Alabama The Blind Boys of Alabama have the rare distinction of being recognised around the world as both living legends and modern-day innovators. They are not just gospel singers borrowing from old traditions; the group helped to define those traditions in the 20th century and almost singlehandedly created a new gospel sound for the 21st. Since the original members first sang together as kids at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind in the late 1930s (including Jimmy Carter, who will be leading the group at Bluesfest), the band has perservered through seven decades to become one of the most recognised and decorated gospel soul music groups in the world. In the early 1960s, the band sang at benefits for Dr Martin Luther King Jr, and were a part of the soundtrack
to the civil rights movement. It’s almost unbelievable that a group of blind, AfricanAmerican singers, who started out touring during a time of whites-only bathrooms, restaurants and hotels, went on to win five Grammy Awards, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, be inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, and to perform at the White House for three different presidents. Their most recent album, Talkin’ Christmas!, a collaboration with Bluesfest legend Taj Mahal, continues the band’s streak of creating original and interesting work. It includes new versions of Christmas standards, covers of hidden gospel gems, and seven brand-new holiday songs – six of which are the first Christmas songs ever penned by the Blind Boys themselves. I love bass players (in the musical sense). I am making a doco about them so first I am going to pick your brains: Why bass? That’s a good question. I actually originally played guitar in the band, then several years ago switched to mainly playing bass, though I still play some guitar. I’ve found bass playing to be more satisfying. Also my brother’s a drummer, so that’s a nice connection to have. I like bass players… What basses do you play? Mainly P Basses we have in the band, that’s my favourite bass, and it suits me and it’s a good basic sound. Sounds like the 70s which I like. Which bass players are your inspiration? Good question, across the board. Peter Hook from New Order and Joy Division, Phil Lesh, some of the classic players such as John Paul Jones, Rick Danko from The Band, Neil Young’s bass player. Stanley Clarke is super impressive, really hot. Andy Rourke from the Smiths. The National have been playing together for 15 years. Are you sick of each other yet?

Was it hard to give up your day job to become a full-time muso? Did it feel risky? Yeah, but I guess we did it in such a way that we weren’t immediately touring the world; we were doing it in between other things we were doing. We started doing it at a later time in our life than most bands, touring and that kind of thing. Little things kept us going along the way. Doing it has always been fun, hard, but it’s what we wanted to do.

I’m at home here in New York and it’s evening here, about 7pm.
Perhaps! We have been working on a new record and we have done a couple of writing sessions and recorded a bunch of ideas. There are some new songs we’ve been playing here and there – a couple in San Francisco and Los Angeles in October – but we want to keep our cards a little bit close to our chest as far as that goes. We’re not really afraid to have some of the songs fall on their face a little bit. I think there’s a sense of adventure in ‘oh, let’s try that!’ It’s good to see how people react. It’s always part of a process and we’re hoping to make that a little more public this time. It’s fun and gives us a bit of energy. We’ve found our process over the years changes with every record. We try something new each time. This time we’re going to record more together and trial the songs a bit more live.

Featured speakers and performers at Boomerang – the global indigenous arts and cultural festival happening within Bluesfest this year – will provide festival-goers with a unique experience of music, dance and culture, and encourages engagement, education and inclusion. With healing, dance, weaving, workshops and more, it even also includes lots of talking, and also welcomes non-indigenous fellas to the stage, including journalist George Negus, The Hon Tony Burke, member for Watson and composer Craig Pilkington. From the rich storytelling traditions of Aboriginal New South Wales, Jannawi Dance Theatre’s Megamara shines a light on the strength, resilience and beauty of young Aboriginal women and culture today. Artistic director Peta Strachan, 7:02 PM a leading female Aboriginal dancer, is nurturing the next generation of female performers. Jannawi Dance Theatre is a Sydney-based dance company encompassing contemporary and traditional styles with dancers and students predominantly from the inner western suburbs and surrounding areas. Peta and Jannawi have been involved in many events performances, productions, teaching, costumes and workshops including World Masters Games opening ceremony, Sydney Opera House events such as Message Sticks, Utzon memorial, Opera House 40th birthday celebrations, City of Sydney’s NAIDOC events and many more.
Malu Kiai Mura Buai Dance Troupe From Boigu Island, located in the top western part of the Torres Strait and the most northerly inhabited island of Australia separating Cape York Peninsula from the island of New Guinea, the performers share their traditional songs and dances that have been passed down from generation to generation, based on the everyday life of island stories.
Excelsior The members of Excelsior are of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island descent. The clan groups they belong to range from north and central Queensland down to north and central New South Wales. Debuting in February 2014, they have performed at Queensland Performing Arts Centre’s Clancestry, Sydney Opera House’s Asian Football Cup draw, and opening for the Chooky Dancers show Djuki Mala at the Judith Wright Centre.

Rako Dancers of Bundjalung land, the Arakwal dancers, welcome Bluesfest patrons to country at the opening ceremony every year. The Arakwal Aboriginal Corporation does fantastic work to educate locals and visitors alike, and keeps local stories alive through educational programs and various artistic activities. The Arakwal dance group have performed many openings and welcome-tocountry ceremonies. They have reclaimed several new language songs which were performed at the 2015 Dancerites event at the Sydney Opera House.
Going Wanhurr and East Journey Under the direction of Bangarra performer Djakapurra Munyarryun, the dance is a two-way experience. Linking western and Yolgnu cultures, and knowledged together through dance or Bungull and Manikay songs that share the ideas and the philosophy of country and culture and how our culture and napaki (non-Indigenous) should live together. The Yolgnu were among Australia’s earliest international traders, maintaining trade and cultural exchanges with the Macassans for six centuries. This diverse group represent the clans of the Dhalinbuy region in northeast Arnhem Land and have toured the globe with their performances and yidaki playing. Featuring members of contemporary band East Journey, this displays the magic of intergenerational exchange and connections through dance and music.
Nakkiah Lui With Gamilaroi Torres Strait Islander heritage, Nakkiah Lui is one of Australia’s exciting new playwrights. In the short space of her 25 years, she has studied abroad, all but finished a law degree, and had a playwright residency at Belvoir St Theatre. The inaugural winner of The Dreaming Award national arts prize, and Belvoir’s Balnaves Indigenous Playwright Award in 2012, she went on to write and perform in the production To Kill the Messenger. More recently she was commissioned as one of the
writers for series one and two of ABC TV’s hit breakout skit comedy sensation Black Comedy.
Shari Sebbens A NIDA graduate from the JabirrJabirr / Bardi peoples, Sebbens is one of six children, born and raised in Darwin. She featured in the feature film Sapphires and is a regular on a number of television series including the award-winning Redfern Now, The Gods of Wheat Street, and the new comedy series 8MMM. A well-known theatre performer, she recently appeared in the Sydney theatre production The Battle of Waterloo and the Belvoir Street production of Radiance.
Getano Bann As a singer/songwriter, storyteller and registered music therapist, for Getano Bann, music, dance, storytelling and humour were an influential and integral part of his childhood, growing up in an extended Torres Strait Islander family. As a music therapist Getano works with children on the streets, in drug rehabilitation and in detention centres, and is passionate about the power of music and the arts in healing process. His songs are a rich blend and mixture of musical styles including latin, blues, soul, funk, ballads, reggae and rock. Getano intertwines family stories, cultural perspectives, life lessons, self-reflective moments and dollops of humour, which makes a performance of irresistible listening and entertaining moments. Getano works as a registered music therapist specialising in children and adolescents issues including addictions, self-esteem, anger, grief loss and bereavement and mental health.
Letila Mitchell From the island of Rotuman, Letila Mitchell is founder of the Pacific Arts Alliance Trustee and current secretary-general. She is also the director of the Fiji Arts Council. She is a visual and performing artist with 15 years’ experience, performing and working in the Pacific, London, New Zealand and Australia. Letila has extensive
Young environmentalist of the year 2015 and former school captain of Lismore High, Bundjalung woman Amelia set up Seed Indigenous Youth Climate Network, an organisation that supports Aboriginal people aged under 30 who want to participate in environmental debates. Seed has trained 50 youth representatives in public speaking and media and project management. They are now participating in important debates concerning the effects of sea-level rise on the Torres Strait, and in negotiations with Aboriginal landholders in Queensland regarding what could become the country’s largest coal mine in the Galilee Basin.
John Faunt John Faunt is a music artist from Manus Island in Papua New Guinea. Over the years John has been performing in Papua New Guinea and Melanesia with his band Hausboi and is an active Manus Garamut (slit log) drummer. John is now based in Brisbane, and is on the board of the Wantok Musik Foundation (wantokmusik.org), assisting their work with Indigenous music and culture in the region. John continues to follow his passion in preserving and showcasing his traditional Manus Island heritage through a new solo music album, while working on the Lukautim Pasin Tumbuna or Safeguard our Cultural Heritage project documenting and protecting sacred Manus traditional rhythms and dances from the effects of modernisation. John is passionately driven to be a voice for his Manus people by giving a more balanced picture of the island province and portray its beauty, culture and people to the world.
Nancy Bates Nancy Bates is a Barkindji woman from far western New South Wales who is fast becoming part of the national Aboriginal music community, having completed a season as a member of Archie Roach’s Into the Bloodstream Gospel Choir. Nancy has received wide exposure in 2013 with her track Old Black Woman and award nods include a Top 10 placement in the APRA Indigenous Songwriters category. Nancy’s performances have included Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Darwin festivals, Deadly Awards, SA NAIDOC Ball, Reconciliation Annual Breakfast Event, Taoundi College 40th Year Celebration, Spirit Festival, Adelaide Fringe (Garden of Unearthly Delights).

19 Joe Williams A Wiradjuri man, Joe Williams played in the NRL for South Sydney Rabbitohs, Penrith Panthers and Canterbury Bulldogs before switching to professional boxing in 2009. Joe is a two-time WBF World Junior Welterweight champion, and recently won the WBC Asia Continental title. Joe is currently working full time as the Aboriginal education worker at Mater Dei Catholic College. Apart from being involved with professional sport for more than 15 years, Joe now spends his time working to inspire youth and individuals through motivational speaking workshops. Joe has spent time working with disengaged youth in high schools and primary schools, drug and alcohol rehabilitation centres, and jails, and has mentored both youth and adults. Privately Joe has had his own battles, struggles and setbacks, which culminated in his own suicide attempt in 2011.
Clayton Donovan Clayton Donovan is Australia’s most acclaimed Indigenous chef. Growing up in northern New South Wales, Clayton started learning about native produce when he was four years old, out walking with his aunties and grandmothers, taking what they found in the bush or along the coastline and cooking it up at their homes. In his developing years as a chef he developed his own style of cooking, learning to use native ingredients in a restaurant environment. Integrating ingredients such as wattleseed, rosella and myrtles into Asian- and European-inspired dishes, he applied to work at the prestigious Watermark restaurant at Balmoral Beach, Sydney. Clayton was introduced to the secrets and gastronomic intricacies involved in creating and presenting dishes in first-class hatted restaurants, including in England, where he took sous chef and head chef positions in restaurants such as Fowey Hall and Boscundle Manor. Clayton continues to source ingredients from the bush, foraging to introduce new and exciting flavours to his menus. He received a chef’s hat from the Good Food Guide in 2011. His international experience with his understanding of Australian native foods to produce a unique and contemporary cuisine with an Indigenous twist is highly regarded by publishers and food editors. Clayton Donovan reached a new level as writer and presenter on ABC TV program Wild Kitchen. The series was aired all over the world on Virgin aircrafts, rail networks and popular online channels.
Troy Brady Troy’s musical career began at 16 when he taught himself to play guitar from a songbook of The Shadows provided by his father. Two years later, his singing talent was noticed by his mother when she heard him and some friends having a singalong to a boombox in the garage. This resulted in his involvement in the group AIM4MORE for four years. In late 2001, Troy entered the audition process for Channel Seven’s
Arakwal Dancers at Boomerang Festival 2013 Popstars series three, billed as the world’s first TV search for a solo artist. Out of 6,000 entries, on 17 March 2002 Troy was officially announced as being one of the final seven. The finalists were each required to record their take on Stevie Wonder’s classic Superstition. Troy’s rendition is a distinctive soulful R&B version, reflecting his personal style and respect for the original. Troy is a proud Birriggubba man, born in Rockhampton, north Queensland.
Clarence Slockee Clarence Slockee, from the Mindjingbal clan of the Bundjalung, is a graduate from the National Aboriginal & Islander Skills Development Association (NAISDA) Dance College. Clarence has gained experience across a broad range of performance media, but his passion remains with his farming roots and ensuring the biodiversity of native species. He has worked for many years as the education co-coordinator in Aboriginal programs with Sydney Botanical Gardens and more recently managing cultural tourism at the Baranagroo Parklands. With his regular segment on ABC TV series Gardening Australia, he continues to educate many about the medicinal, cultural and edible plants you need to know about when foraging.
Richard Frankland Richard Frankland is an AFI filmmaker, musician, writer and an extraordinary storyteller. Richard was nominated for Australian of the Year in 2011 in particular for his work with Indigenous community groups, including his work on the eradication of Lateral Violence with the Australian Indigenous population, a topic that he will be delving into at Boomerang Festival. Richard Frankland is a proud Gunditjmara man who worked as a field officer to the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody. This experience inspired him to write several plays, including No Way to Forget, Who Killed Malcolm Smith and Conversations with the Dead. Frankland won an AFI Award for Best Screenplay in a Short for his short film No Way to Forget. It was the first film by an Indigenous director to win an AFI Award. It was broadcast nationally on SBS TV and screened at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival in the category of Un Certain Regard. Richard also wrote and directed Harry’s War, a feature film based on his uncle’s role in World War II on the Kokoda Track. The film was screened at the British War Memorial in London and won Best Short Film at Spike Lee’s Alternative Oscars for black

Delvene Cockatoo Collins A Nunukul, Ngugi and Goenpul woman of Quandamooka country, Delvene Cockatoo Collins’s arts practice includes textiles, ceramics and jewellery making. The stories shared through these media are those of her family’s lived experiences on Minjerribah, the natural environment, and her responses to representations of images and objects of Quandamooka. For jewellery-making workshops, Delvene provides her handcrafted ceramic beads and collected natural items including seeds. At the Boomerang Festival jewellerymaking workshops, Delvene will be joined by her mother and sister.

Dhinawan From the Gamillaroi Bigambul peoples Dhinawan, aka Mick Baker, is known for his spontaneous, straight-fromthe-heart cultural commentary. Founder and frontman of Dhinawan Dreaming, the Byron Bay-based entertainer uses the media of dance, song and storytelling to promote cultural awareness and understanding in a humorous, insightful and thought-provoking way. When not spearheading anti-bullying programs in primary schools and painting boards for pro surfer Kelly Slater, Dhinawan travels regularly overseas to perform in the UK, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Scotland, and Italy.

A Ngugi woman form Stradbroke Island, Sonja gathers un-gaire (swamp reeds) and grass fibres as well as nets, ropes, plastics and other materials such as marine debris that have been discarded into the ocean and found washed up on the beautiful shores of Minjerribah. FREE GRANTS WORKSHOP Due to popular demand I am hosting a Grants Writing Workshop for community groups and not-for-profit groups in our area. This workshop will empower community groups to write successful grant applications and seek additional funding. ‘The Grants Guy’ Keith Whelan will be coming up from Sydney to facilitate this workshop. Keith specialises in grant application writing, tender writing, crowd funding, volunteer management and fundraising. This workshop is aimed at community, multicultural, charitable, arts, notfor-profit and sports groups. The Grants Workshop will be held in Ballina ands run for three hours and will be free of charge for community groups and not-for profit organisations. SHARK SPOTTERS IN TOWN!
Last month I introduced the Plastic Shopping Bags Prohibition (Protecting Marine Life) Bill 2016. This proposed law will mean a complete ban on single use plastic bags in NSW, which will reduce the impact of plastic bags on the environment, including the marine environment. Tens of thousands of marine animals die each year from ingesting plastic bags, which look like jellyfish and food often consumed by dolphins, turtles, whales and other marine life. Join me in supporting Plastic Free July.
