oliday season is engagement season. But after he pops the question and she says “yes,” the reality of wedding planning sets in. Here are the top five questions you will need to answer to make your wedding planning journey a pleasant experience.

“After Valentine’s Day, the holidays are the most popular time of year for couples to become engaged,” said wedding planning expert Raymond Miller of My Wedding Reception Ideas.com. “Many brides-to-be who get engaged over the holidays will begin their planning efforts in the first months of the new year. Knowing where to start can be overwhelming.”

Brides should begin their planning by answering five basic questions, Miller advises.

What is our budget?

“Funding your wedding can be one of the most expensive undertakings you’ll tackle in your life together as a couple,” Miller says. “Many couples only spend more on buying a house or car, or funding their children’s college educations.” Setting and sticking to a budget for your wedding is an essential step toward starting your married life on a sound financial footing. Determine where your funding will come from – if your parents can help or if you’ll be paying on your own – and decide how much you can afford to spend without going into debt.

What season works?

As soon as you announce you’re engaged, people will start asking

wedding seasons and you may find venues in the destination of your choice are booked a year or more in advance.

What kind of venue do you want?

Do you dream of a big church wedding?

Or saying your “I do’s” in a beautiful natural setting? Perhaps you want your reception to be in a grand hotel. Knowing the type of venue you desire will help you refine your options and choose a specific location down the road.

Who do you want to officiate?

Is it important to you to be married by your own church’s minister? Or are you OK with a justice of the peace? Do you fantasize about being joined in marriage by a ship’s captain? Or does your mother have her heart set on seeing you married by the rabbi who was there at your bat mitzvah?

Just as popular venues book quickly, favorite officiants also have their dance cards fill fast for popular wedding seasons. As soon as you know who you would like to officiate at your wedding, it might pay to approach him or her and find out about future availability.

“Of course there are many, many things to consider when planning a wedding,” Miller said. “But these five points are the basics you must address, and everything else about your wedding will be planned around your answers to these questions. Once you’ve made these initial decisions, it will be easier to refine your options and decide exactly what will make your wedding wonderful, memorable and perfect for you.” (ARA)

Countdown to your wedding day

o help you get a better understanding of how to plan a wedding and when you should be making certain decisions, here’s a time frame you can follow that should ensure your wedding goes off as smoothly as possible.

10Iftoyou12haven’t months done it already, this is a good time to announce your engagement and introduce your respective families. Since most reception halls and churches have busy wedding schedules, it is important to book both as early as possible, preferably at least a year in advance of your wedding day.

It’s also a good idea to start putting together a guest list around this time and ask your parents whom they’d like to invite as well. Also, since your budget will determine almost every aspect of your wedding, sitting down and determining what you can spend – and developing a savings plan – should be first and foremost.

2 toFinalize 3 months your guest list and mail out your invitations. If your guest list includes many people who are spread out geographically, mail the invitations as close to 12 weeks in advance as possible. This is also a good time to finalize your menu choices for your guests, and find all your wedding accessories such as the ring pillow, candles, etc. Also, since it is tradition to provide gifts for those in the wedding party as well as the parents of the bride and groom, this is a good time to decide on and purchase those gifts. Just to be safe, confirm that all groomsmen have ordered their tuxedos and finalize all transportation, both to and from the wedding and to the airport for your honeymoon.

gown fitting. Also finalize the readings you’d prefer during the ceremony and mail them out to anyone who has agreed to do a reading. If your family prefers to host a small gathering for close family and friends after the wedding rehearsal, the night before the wedding, this is a good time to order any food or drinks you might want to serve that night, or make a restaurant reservation.

6 This to 9 months is the time to start

booking some services, such as a florist, caterer, a DJ or band, and a photographer.

However, some of the more experienced DJs, bands and photographers might have their schedules booked a year in advance, so this is something you’ll want to consider doing shortly after you choose a wedding date. Also, this is a good time to inform any guests who will be traveling significant distances of the date of your wedding. The earlier your guests can book a flight, the less expensive that flight will be. This is also a good time to order gowns for both the bride and bridesmaids, as some manufacturers require a few months to ship to bridal shops. You might want to ask someone such as your priest or rabbi to be the officiant of your wedding. And just as out-of-town guests will save travel dollars by booking flights early, you will likely save money, too, if you book your honeymoon early.

4 This to 5 months is a good time to decide on a wedding invitation. Also, now is

an ideal time to start hunting for a wedding cake by sampling a number of different bakeries and their cakes before ultimately making a decision. Just to be sure, confirm that all of the bridesmaids have ordered their gowns and start looking for a tuxedo for the groom and the groomsmen. If you haven’t done so already, purchase your wedding rings and talk to the people that you would like to have participate in the wedding ceremony.

1 toGet2aweeks final attendance count and submit it to the caterer as soon as you know it, while also providing a final seating chart. Pick up the wedding gown and tuxedo. Make sure the wedding party picks up their attire. Also, finalize your vows and confirm all wedding-day details such as transportation, photo schedules, and addresses. And don’t forget to pack for your honeymoon.

In recent years, wedding cakes have become more of an artistic centerpiece than just a confectionary treat.

• Painted cakes with edible food coloring paint that feature beautiful landscapes or a portrait.

Many couples still opt for the traditional cake, and that is always in style.

For many, that is 50 percent more than they have actually budgeted for the occasion. Underestimating wedding expenses can lead to financial distress even before the marriage has begun.

In the not-so-distant past, weddings were largely financed by the bride and her parents. Things are much different now. Most weddings now are paid for by the bride and groom with little contribution from family. Young couples just starting out in life may find that weddings are more of a financial commitment than originally anticipated.

Planning for the expected – and unexpected – can help couples survive wedding expenses.

Savings plan With most couples paying for the majority of the wedding themselves, it will be up to them to come up with the bulk of the wedding finances. Starting to save early is essential. Once you have set the date, begin saving immediately. Even if the wedding won’t be a lavish affair, it will still have some expenses.

• To save, consider curbing recreational spending. Cut dinners out, trips to the movies or non-essential purchases. Place the money you would’ve spent into a wedding account.

• Consider having automatic transfers or deposits into an account for forced savings. Many employers can deposit a portion of your paycheck into a separate account.

• Eliminate debt right away. It may seem counterproductive, but sometimes you have to spend money to save money. Instead of racking up high interest rate charges on credit card balances, pay down credit cards or other bills you have. Once you are in the clear, you can focus more on saving for the wedding.

• If need be, have a long engagement so that you have ample time to save.

Setting a budget Many couples want a dream wedding but do not have the finances to afford a platinum event. But that doesn’t mean they still can’t have a lavish, beautiful wedding. Setting a budget means you can prioritize what you want and what you will pass up. It also provides a savings goal and a firm deadline.

• Shop around for the average rates of vendors in your area. Work on the big-ticket items first before focusing on the smaller details.

• Don’t expect wedding gifts to cover the cost of your wedding. While some guests are quite generous, others may not even cover the cost of their meal.

Prioritize A dream wedding is a marriage between desires and reality. Today it is possible to recreate the look of designer gowns and other details with less-expensive options. Figure out your priorities and work from there. Consider these cost-saving options.

• Think about where you will be living after you are married.

A residence takes priority over a lavish wedding.

• Have the wedding party carry fresh-flower bouquets, but use less-expensive silk flowers or even fruit as centerpieces.

• Ask your baker to create a small wedding display cake you can use for your photos and serve guests from a much cheaper sheet cake that is hidden in the kitchen.

• Get married on a weekday or at an earlier time of day.

• Limit the bar to wine, beer and soda to save on the expense of top-shelf liquors.

• Register for unconventional gifts, such as contributing to the honeymoon.

Invite only Pare down your wedding guest list ouples are faced with many decisions when planning a wedding. One often overlooked decision concerns the guest list. Ideally, couples would love to invite all their friends and family to share in their special day.

Realistically, however, budget often dictates just how many guests a couple can invite.

That reality has led to a disagreement or two over the years, as both the bride-to-be and her future husband make their case for whom makes the cut. To help avoid such disagreements, couples should consider the following tips when paring down their guest list.

• Make a master list as early as possible. It’s impossible to pare down a guest list if there’s no list to begin with.

Once the planning process begins, couples should separately write

down all the guests they would like to invite. Once each is finished with their list, the hard work of paring that list down can begin.

• Consider who’s footing the bill. If Mom and Dad are paying for the wedding, then their suggestions for the guest list should carry most of the weight. The same principle can be applied if the couple is paying for their own wedding. If the costs are being split down the middle, then both the groom- and bride-to-be should be allowed to invite the same number of guests.

• Ask that kids stay home. Many couples request that their guests leave the kids at home. While nieces and nephews might make the cut, it’s perfectly acceptable for couples to state their preference that children not attend. This can be noted on the invitation, addressing friends as “Mr. John Doe and guest” or “Mr. and Mrs. John Doe.” Guests should take the hint, but if any RSVP with their kids, be sure to call them immediately and explain the situation. Friends and family should understand the preference, particularly in the current economic climate.

• It’s not a reunion. Couples are often tempted to invite long-lost friends to their wedding. But cost-conscious couples must recognize their wedding is not a reunion. If the goal is to keep the guest list under control, only invite close friends and family members who have kept in touch with you over the years.

• Stick to your guns. Couples vary greatly in what they want in their wedding. Some want a grandiose affair they can share with their whole family and all of their friends. Other couples want a more laid-back affair with only those closest to them in attendance.

Whatever their preference, couples should remain firm and not feel guilty no matter how many guests they choose to invite or not invite.

• Cut back in other areas. If it’s proving simply impossible to agree on a reduced guest list, consider inviting everyone and cutting back in other areas. Before signing any contracts, closely examine each one for items that can be removed without drastically changing the ceremony and celebration. Chances are there are savings to be had, and those savings might make the difference between inviting and not inviting another friend or family member. (MS)

Planning a wedding can be a high-pressure time, even for couples with a clear vision of what they want and the budget to accomplish it.

One aspect of your wedding that doesn’t have to cause stress is choosing wedding favors. Go with something simple, elegant and timeless that will fit the lifestyle of virtually every guest – aromatherapy.

Scent is a mood-setting gift that can help establish the tone for your reception, and remind guests afterward how much they enjoyed sharing your big day. You don’t have to give every guest a pricey personal essence or resort to costly scented candles to achieve the perfect aromatherapy wedding favor. Making your own favors not only saves you money, it puts your personal stamp on the mementoes your guests will keep long after the wedding day has passed.

What’s more, says Tom Havran, an aromatherapy expert with the personal products company Aura Cacia, “making aromatherapy favors together can help a harried couple slow down, refocus and remember what’s really important – that they’re about to begin a wonderful life together and that the special guests they’ve assembled will bear witness to it all.”

Havran offers some tips for using aromatherapy to combat wedding-planning jitters and create memorable favors: Surround yourself with scents that soothe. A potpourri that features real lavender flowers is a wonderful way to bring comforting, peaceful aroma into your home. Sprinkle the flowers with lavender essential oil and tuck a sachet of the mixture in with your bed linens. Place a bowl on the dining room table. Store some in a mesh bag inside the luggage you’ll be using for your honeymoon. Traditional & non-traditional ways to celebrate a wedding

ome couples want to celebrate their weddings in traditional fashion; others want everything to be unique, new and exciting.

Today’s weddings are largely planned, financed and executed entirely by the couple getting married. Therefore, it is up to them how to celebrate their special day.

Here’s a look at some of the traditional wedding elements and how they can be shaken up for a different spin.

Traditional: Father walks the bride down the aisle.

here are a few things about weddings that cannot be predicted or controlled, such as what Mother Nature will do on the wedding day. However, there are many items that are well within the control of the bride and groom. Proper planning can help ensure the wedding of their dreams.

One of the best ways to ease wedding-day nerves is for the couple to get organized and begin planning their event the moment the engagement period begins. The earlier preparation starts, the better the chance that vendors will be able to provide what’s needed, or that changes can be made when unforeseen events pop up.

By making a list of things to do, couples can allot time in their schedules for each task, and they can feel a sense of accomplishment and relief each time an item is checked off the list.

Decide on a date Couples should select a date for their wedding soon after becoming engaged. After all, it is the countdown to this day that will help organize and determine planning schedules.

Reserve a ceremony location Traditional weddings take place in a house of worship. It’s best to meet with a pastor, rabbi or other officiant to see if the ceremony site will be available for the wedding. This person will also help guide couples through any religious requirements needed prior to getting married there, as well as any rules and regulations for the ceremony site.

oday, more couples are looking beyond standard wedding packages and exploring customized, do-it-yourself options. According to The Wedding Report, couples spent 10 percent less on their big day in 2009 as compared to 2008, and spending from 2007 to 2009 fell by more than 30 percent.

By choosing handcrafted wedding touches and forgoing pricey extras, creative couples are mixing and matching a surprising combination of one-of-a-kind wedding elements to create unique and personalized celebrations.

From the centerpiece display to the wedding favors, more people are realizing that personal touches can elevate that special day from a cookie-cutter event to an intimately beautiful affair.

Here are four fun and budget-friendly ideas to create a wedding that is anything but generic:

Snip and style. If funds are tight but you want to have lots of flowers, enlist your florist to put together some of the more difficult floral pieces – such as the bride’s and bridesmaids’ bouquets – but ask your wedding party or family members to help create some fun floral centerpieces. HoneymooN planning how-to ith all the work that goes into planning a wedding, it can be easy for couples to overlook their own honeymoons. But in the middle of all those seating arrangements and reception hall negotiations, couples also need to plan and look forward to the rest and relaxation that awaits once the wedding has come and gone.

Couples can take the following advice to ensure their getaway goes off without a hitch.

• Be budget-conscious. After all the stress of planning and paying for the wedding, couples will likely just enjoy the time away. Take this into consideration when planning a honeymoon. If a dream trip isn’t in the budget, don’t fret. A less expensive getaway is still a getaway, and couples will enjoy their welldeserved break no matter where it is.

• Plan an off-season honeymoon. That dream honeymoon might be affordable after all, if couples can wait until it’s not the height of tourist season. Most weddings occur dur-

ing the summer months, when tourist season is in full swing. Couples who can put off their honeymoon until the off-season will find their dream honeymoon is much more affordable.

• Start early. The earlier couples begin to research destinations, the better feel they will have for what they can and can’t afford. But don’t book any flights or make any reservations too far in advance. The best deals are often available a few months before the trip.

• Spread the news that you’re newlyweds.

Hotels love hosting newlyweds, and many will upgrade rooms for recently married guests.

Couples should not be too brash about it, though, as fully booked hotels won’t be able to upgrade their guests.

• Think outside the box. When asked about a dream honeymoon, couples will often bring up Hawaii or even Paris. While those are beautiful places, they’re also expensive.

Fortunately, there are a bevy of locales that aren’t nearly as pricey, but will still make for a honeymoon getaway that won’t soon be forgotten. (MS)

The trouble is, many brides-to-be don’t take adequate steps to ensure their wedding day tresses will be up to par, including doing a practice run and being confident with their stylists. While your hair may look picture-perfect in your mind, getting through the wedding day with hair intact takes some time and effort – and the planning process doesn’t start a week before the wedding, either.

Start early Once you know your wedding date and have the venues booked, start shopping around for a stylist that you’ll stick with through your wedding day. You want to make sure this person is in consistent charge of your look, tailoring haircuts and coloring appointments toward the end goal.

Set a schedule Certain hair tasks should occur at specific times. For example, your final color should be done at least two weeks before the wedding to allow for color blending. A final trim should be around the same time also so that your hair hasn’t just been snipped. You’ll want haircuts at regular intervals, even if you’re growing your hair out for the wedding, to make sure it looks healthy.

Do your research Browse through magazines and make a look book of styles you like. Discuss with your stylist if they will complement your facial structure, style, hair type, and wedding gown. Talk about the venue and what will be expected of your hair. If you’ll be on the beach with blowing wind, a tight up-do might not be practical.

Have a hair rehearsal Schedule a rehearsal of your wedding day hairdo with your stylist after you come up with a look that’s agreed upon. Not only will this help your stylist get his or her technique down pat, it’ll enable both of you to fine tune what works and what doesn’t. You can also get a feel for your hair so there won’t be any surprises once you are ready to walk down the aisle. Make sure to bring your veil with you and make-up your face so you’ll get an accurate view of the finished product. Take pictures from all angles to ensure that you’re happy with the look from every direction. Remember, you’ll be photographed coming and going, in action and at rest, during the wedding.

Pack reinforcements Some brides opt to invite their stylist to the reception hall for a few touch-ups between venues. If this isn’t an option, ask what products to bring along and how you can repair any minor flyaways, etc.

Put it in perspective Remember, just like everything that you’re planning for your wedding, while you hope things go on without a hitch, there may be some snags along the way. Remain calm and go with the flow. Guests are more apt to remember the joyous tone of the day rather than minute details that could frazzle you – like an errant bobby pin or a pull in your stockings. Transportation Options Abound ouples have many decisions to make regarding their wedding ceremony and reception. One of those decisions concerns transportation to and from the special event.

There are many options in wedding transportation. The more traditional options include renting a car or limousine. The Bridal Association of America reports that the average couple spends $400 to $500 for an automotive rental. However, prices may vary depending on geography and the type of vehicle rented.

Wedding transportation is perhaps something grooms-to-be can get excited about. After all, we’re talking about cars – some fancy, some large, and many decked out with different fea-

tures. Plus, it’s traditionally the responsibility of the groom to arrange transportation to and from the ceremony, reception and the hotel or honeymoon destination.

Grooms responsible for arranging transportation can consider the following options.

Limousine: A limo is one of the most traditional methods of transport on a couple’s wedding day. A limousine’s size enables it to carry the bridal party in its entirety. Because the bride and groom often do not see each other before the ceremony, two limos may be rented, one larger for the bridal party, and one smaller for the bride and her parents, depending on personal preference.

Classic car: Sports car enthusiasts may want to make an entrance – and exit – behind the wheel of a sporty vehicle.

These can include a high-end Ferrari or an Aston Martin. Because of their high purchase price, sports car rentals may carry a premium price.

Boat: Individuals getting married by the sea or another body of water may want to consider attending the festivities via boat, be it a large vessel or a more intimate canoe or rowboat.

Wedding day transportation varies depending on each couple’s preference.

• Be sure to have transportation options ready for guests who may have overindulged on alcoholic beverages.

Develop a wedding

floral plan eading up to their big day, couples have lots to worry about before they finally get to walk down the aisle as man and wife. Planning a wedding is no small task, as even the most minor details must be accounted for.

Such is the case with the floral arrangements, particularly when it comes to the more individual aspects of a floral plan. For instance, the following components must be considered: • The bridal bouquet. It’s tradition for bridal bouquets to contain white or creamcolored flowers such as stephanotis, roses, orchids, or lilies. Many bridal bouquets also include fillers like baby’s breath, some green or ivy and ribbons or additional accessories.

• Bouquets for attendants. Attendants’ bouquets should be identical, and it’s best to coordinate these bouquets with the attendants’ gowns. Only the maid of honor traditionally receives a slightly different bouquet, as it’s customary to give her one apart from

the rest, though not significantly so.

• Boutonnieres for groomsmen and ushers.

The guy’s side of the wedding also needs to be part in the floral plan. Worn in a buttonhole or lapel, a boutonniere should be on the left lapel and match a flower from the bridesmaids’ bouquet. The groom should also wear a boutonniere, though his should match a flower from the bride’s bouquet. When wearing boutonnieres, men should not wear additional accessories such as pocket squares.

• Flowers for special guests. Certain special guests, such as grandmothers and mothers, should receive corsages. While the corsages do not need to be identical, they should match the bridesmaids’ bouquets. It’s best to consult with a florist for a corsage color that matches all dresses, as typically the corsages must be ordered before the bride and groom know what their mothers, grandmothers and other special guests will be wearing. A corsage that goes with anything, therefore, is ideal. - (MS)
