ou’ve noticed it – the shadows lengthening and the days growing shorter. The days are still steamy, but there’s that little bit of coolness to the evenings. There’s a little nostalgia as cooler air brings back childhood memories – the excitement of returning to school tinged with a little sadness at the end of summer fun. Summer is coming to an end, and with that end comes the final Vacationer issue for the summer.

But the change in seasons doesn’t bring an end to the fun here in the lakes area. There’s still time for golfing, hiking at the local state park, beautiful fall drives through the countryside, running and biking.

There’s loads of fun at the annual Carlos Creek Winery Grape Stomp and you can even enjoy craft beer and food at Copper Trail Creek’s Oletoberfest.

The museums are open in the Alexandria area, giving you an opportunity to learn about the history Lori Mork of boats and the times wonder of our lakes area, or EDITOR explore the famous Runestone and visit Big Ole, the 28-foot Viking statue that is an icon of our beautiful city.

Make a visit to one of our wonderful public beaches, or visit the new Veterans Memorial Park – a tribute to area veterans.

The 99th Resorters Golf Tournament will be in action at the Alexandria Golf Club August 2-8 with many of the top golfers from Minnesota and beyond.

Racing has returned to the Viking Speedway and the excitement of cars burning up the 1/2-mile oval is just waiting for you.

Autumn. I love when fall brings crisp leaves that crunch under my shoes as I walk along the trail at a state park or listen to the sound of geese as they gather for their southbound journey.

Many of our favorite arts and entertainment venues are beginning to heat up, so make sure to check out the websites of your favorites for updates. The Red Willow Arts Coalition has begun its Concerts on the Courthouse Lawn and Firepit Productions will be hosting outdoor theater events.

Autumn also brings apple picking – crisp, juicy apples that make your mouth water – and the bounty of wonderfully fresh produce that can be found at local farmers’ markets.

FIRE PIT productions

W

ith a little bit of ingenuity and a lot of hard work, Fire Pit Productions is back on stage!

By turning its indoor productions into outdoor performances and building an outdoor stage, Fire Pit Productions has created outdoor seating that will follow all the social distancing guidelines and bring local theater back for summer 2020.

Theater director Quincy Roers discussed his plans and the guidelines with state legislators, and, following their direction, has set up an area for outdoor seating that includes 8-foot squares that will accommodate two people per square. Spectators must bring their own blankets or lawn chairs.

Along with the outdoor seating, Roers and his team have also created a drive-in movie theater style space for cars to park, staggering

the parking to allow everyone to be able to see the stage. People will be able to tune their radios to the show and listen while watching the live production.

To minimize contact, Fire Pit Productions will not be charging admission to the shows. There will be buckets for free will offerings near the entrances. There is also a cleaning and disinfecting protocol for the inside restrooms and there are no concessions. You are allowed to bring your own.

Begun in 2018 by Quincy Roers, Fire Pit Productions normally uses the stage at the Lakes Area Theatre for small production plays to provide the community with edgy thought-provoking stage plays. The performances are locally cast.

The group is slated to perform the romantic comediy Barefoot in the

Park by Neil Simon August 7-9 and 14-16 as a benefit to raise money for the local arts community.

Barefoot in the Park was first performed in 1963 at the Biltmore Theatre on Broadway and is the story of a newlywed couple who have opposing personalities. The story takes you through the ups and downs of their life over four days.

In October, Fire Pit Productions plans to perform The Pillowman by Martin McDonagh, the story of a writer, Katurian, living in a totalitarian state who is interrogated about his short stories, which echo a series of child murders.

CONCERTS on the courthouse

The music menu at the Concerts on the Courthouse Lawn each Thursday throughout the summer holds a variety that appeals to the toe-tapper in everyone.

These weekly concerts run through the end of August and are presented by the Red Willow Arts Coalition (RWAC).

After being delayed for six weeks because of the pandemic, the first concert was slated for June 25.

The RWAC asks those who are not feeling well to stay home, and those who attend to wear face masks and follow social distancing, including performers. Red Willow staff will make sure that guidelines are being followed. There will be four self-serve popcorn areas with closed boxes and water stations to avoid lines, as well as two portable toilets that will be sanitized weekly.

A change in parking will allow more concert-goers to listen from their vehicles.

The concerts have become one of the area’s most popular social gatherings, where friends and family get together to listen to music.

The RWAC, formed in 2009 to promote the arts and provide entertainment in the lakes area, has been bringing this all together for music fans on the lawn of the Douglas County Courthouse free of charge for several years and plans to provide entertainment again this summer.

Just bring your lawn chair or blanket and grab a seat. All concerts begin at 7 p.m.

GLACIAL RIDGEbyway TRAIL travel a scenic

A

220-mile route through lakes, woods and farmlands, the Glacial Ridge Trail is officially designated a Minnesota State Scenic Byway and is a great getaway for those looking for a relaxing drive.

This byway consists of several loops in the countryside between Willmar and Glenwood, with extensions to Alexandria and Sauk Centre for a total of 245 miles and allows you to create your own adventure.

Travelers can select their own points of interest along the drive through rolling terrain filled with lakes, woods, prairie and farmland – scenes that change with the seasons.

Highlighted by three state parks – Sibley, Monson and Glacial Lakes – the byway has plenty of great stopping spots good for hiking, bird watching and fishing.

The area was formed by massive glaciers as they covered the land then melted, leaving behind many unique ridges and hills.

When the United States expanded westward in the 1850s, settlers moved into the area and have left their mark through their rich cultural history.

VIKING speedway

A

fter opening the 55th racing season on July 11 under restrictions due to COVID-19, the Viking Speedway racers and fans will continue to see action this summer on the 1/2-mile track.

Grandstand space has been marked off into four sections and is limited to 250 fans per section, so once the grandstand is sold out, no one else will be allowed in. Masks are not required but are strongly encouraged, and the Viking Speedway is asking that if fans are not feeling well that they stay home in order to protect racers, employees and other fans.

The speedway has been home to stock car racing at its finest, featuring five classes of racing – Late Models, Modifieds, Super Stocks, Midwest Modifieds and Street Stocks – since 1953.

Racing is normally held every Saturday night from the beginning of May through Labor Day, along with the Viking Fall Classic in October and a few other specials throughout the summer.

Highlighting the racing season will be the Hall of Fame night on August 1 as well as the Jerry Kluver Memorial Super Stock Special on August 8.

The Viking Speedway is located at the Douglas County Fairgrounds in Alexandria, approximately 3/4 mile west of State Highway 29 on County Road 82.

Pit gates open at 3 p.m. and the grandstand opens at 5 p.m. Racing action gets under way at 6:30 p.m.

FARMERS markets

or an opportunity to buy the freshest fruits, vegetables and food products directly from farmers, growers or producers, local farmers markets are a must.

There are several farmers markets in the area: Alexandria, Holmes City, Glenwood, Hoffman and Starbuck, and all provide fresh, local produce.

ALEXANDRIA The Alexandria Farmers Market has been providing fresh, local produce for more than 25 years – a good marketing opportunity for local growers, and promotes Minnesota-grown products. Locally grown products are picked fresh and brought straight to the market. It doesn’t get any better – morning fresh and perfect!

All the food at the Farmers Market is produced within a 75-mile radius of Alexandria, and the vendors are the growers, giving consumers a deeper connection to their food.

Alexandria includes a full line of locally grown fruits and vegetables: apples, beans, beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cucumbers, herbs, lettuce, onions, peas, peppers, potatoes, pumpkins, raspberries, squash, strawberries, sweet corn, tomatoes, cut flowers, elk, lamb, beef, chicken, pork and baked goods. The farmer’s market runs June through October at Big Ole Central Park.

RESORTERS golf tournament

I

n the tradition it has followed for 98 years, the 99th Resorters Golf Tournament will provide some of the most exciting and memorable golf action available as the tournament runs from August 2-8.

But more than that, it is a family affair, providing traditions that connect the past to the present, bringing new generations of families to the lakes area.

Many of the best golfers in the state will be competing in the week-long event, filling the competition with beautiful drives, errant shots and game-winning putts on a course filled with history and signature holes.

The tournament will include not only some very serious competition but some fun as well with the Longest Drive Contest on Monday, August 3 at 6 p.m.

after regular play has concluded, and the Putting Contest on Wednesday, August 5 at 6 p.m.

Many high profile athletes have competed in this tourney, most notably professional golfer and Alexandria graduate Tom Lehman, who won the Resorters title in 1980. The Alexandria Golf Club is where the PGA Tour professional and USA Ryder Cup captain learned the game of golf.

New to the tournament last year was the Men’s Grand Master Flight for those 75 years of age or older. The field included the first eight players to enter.

Qualifying play for the Men’s Regular/Championship flights will begin on Sunday, August 2, with match play beginning Tuesday, August 4.

CARLOS CREEK grape WINERY stomp

I

t’s fun. It’s messy. It’s a stompin’ good time.

Whether you’re a stomper or just cheering the teams on, there’s a weekend of fun waiting for you at Carlos Creek Winery in Alexandria when its 20th annual Grape Stomp and Fall Festival gets going.

Held September 18-20, the festival attracts more than 15,000 visitors from all over the country during the three-day celebration.

And it’s not just the stomp you can enjoy. The festivities include wine tasting, 12 live bands on four stages and more than 150 food, juried artists and marketplace vendors and a man cave featuring 22 Northmen Brewing Co. beer.

The highlight of the event is the grape stomp, when more than 300 teams will stomp out 10,000 pounds of grapes. In addition, youth ages 10-16 can join in on the Little Foot Stomp on Sunday.

Each day features a special theme with costumes.

The festival is handicap accessible, and is held rain or shine. In past years, there has been plenty of free parking for passenger vehicles and buses on site.

Information on how the Grape Stomp will be structured this year, and what health and social distancing guidelines will be required are yet to be determined.

Grape Stomp hours are noon-7 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday.

RUNESTONE museum

T

he Runestone Museum has been inspiring curiosity about local history and heritage for more than 50 years.

The world famous and controversial Kensington Rune Stone was the Runestone Museum’s only artifact when it opened its doors in 1958. Since then, the museum has expanded to include exhibits celebrating native Minnesotans, emigrants and immigrants, Minnesota wildlife and events that shaped the area.

Fort Alexandria, commissioned in 1862, has been recreated with rescued historical structures, such as a nearly exact replica of the stockade built in 1862, an 1889 church, a log cabin built in the late 1860s and an 1885 schoolhouse. The fort is located in the outdoor portion of the campus that is open April-October. Housing rare and exciting artifacts like a Middle Ages Nordic fire steel and a 1920s jingle dress, the Runestone Museum is sure to impress whether you’re interested in history, heritage or the natural sciences.

KENSINGTON RUNESTONE It’s a controversy more than 100 years in the making: Did an immigrant Swedish farmer find a buried rock in 1898 that contained an ancient runic message carved by Viking explorers 100 years before Columbus landed in America? Or is the whole thing a hoax, perpetrated by the farmer or some other prankster?

A large replica of the Kensington Runestone is located at a small, wayside rest. Visitors can read the inscription and take a photo by the replica. The replica is located in a small park at the east end of Sixth Avenue in Alexandria.

Explore the controversy for yourself at the Runestone Museum, located at 206 Broadway in Alexandria.

Summer hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Tuesday through Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Admission to the museum, located at 206 Broadway, is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors ages 65 and older and $5 for students (youth and college). A family admission is $20.

RUNESTONE MUSEUM After you take your picture with Big Ole, cross the street for a visit to the Runestone Museum. There you will learn about Big Ole, Vikings and Nordic explorers, and test your skill at matching animal prints in the wildlife exhibit.

Along with the Runestone, the museum holds exhibits on Native Americans, early immigrant history, the history of Alexandria, a memorial/gun exhibit, a Minnesota wildlife exhibit, and a hands-on children’s area.

BIGole

P

erhaps one of the most eye-catching “landmarks” in Alexandria is Big Ole – a 28-foot tall Viking statue that stands at the north end of Broadway.

Born in 1965, the Viking has become a much-beloved resident in the lakes area.

The idea for the statue began in January of 1964 when North Star World’s Fair Corporation in Osseo began working on an addition to the Minnesota display for the New York World’s Fair. The display was to feature the historical Kensington Runestone in an animated scene titled “Minnesota, Birthplace of America.” The new item to coincide with this display was the 28-foot, four-ton Viking statue.

Big Ole was created by fiberglass sculptor Gordon Schumaker of Minneapolis in April of 1965 and was transported to New York just in time for the World’s Fair. When the fair ended, Big Ole was moved to Alexandria, where he stands today.

Originally placed at the north end of Broadway Street in front of the Runestone Museum, Big Ole was moved from the intersection of 3rd and Broadway to a new location one-half block north in 1980 to make way for a new stoplight. He was moved once more in 2002 to his current location at the head of the Central Lakes Trail on the south shore of Lake Agnes.

Throughout the years, Big Ole’s had several repairs made and new coats of paint applied. His beard has changed from gray to yellow to brown.

LEGACY OF THE LAKES museum

M

uch of Minnesota’s history is inspired by the many beautiful lakes throughout our state, and the Legacy of the Lakes Museum and Gardens is dedicated to bringing that history to the public.

Legacy of the Lakes is open at 25 percent capacity and visitors are required to sign in and leave their contact information to comply with the Minnesota Department of Health regulations. Masks are strongly encouraged but not required.

The museum features handcrafted wooden boats, grand hotels and fishing clubs, bringing to life traditions that reach back nearly a century and a half.

These diverse exhibits, as well as the Gardens, are all part of the Legacy of the Lakes Museum, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of antique and classic watercraft, resort memorabilia and sporting equipment used on the Minnesota lakes.

Originally known as the Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum, the name was changed to Legacy of the Lakes in 2016 to better communicate and reflect its mission of celebrating shared memories and expe-

riences of Minnesota lake life, preserving it for future generations.

In 2018, the BoatHouse, an indoor event center, was added and is available for rent for weddings, corporate events and family gatherings as well as a place for the museum to host educational programs and includes an indoor event hall, bathrooms and bridal suite/greenroom.

The museum is located in downtown Alexandria at 205 Third Avenue West, near the Alexandria Fire Department. The museum is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday from 12-4 p.m. Contact the museum at (320) 759-1114 or through its website www. legacyofthelakes.org.

Cost of admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors 65 and older, $5 for military and veterans and students ages 5-17 and $25 for families (parent and children 17 years of age and younger). Children 5 and younger are free when accompanied by a paying adult.

Nelson, who served the people of Minnesota in public office for more than 50 years, was elected to the Minnesota Legislature, and served two terms in the U.S. Congress before becoming the state’s first foreign-born governor. He then served in the U.S. Senate for 28 years.

Nelson claimed a homestead in Alexandria in 1871 and built a small house on the property in 1874. As his political career progressed, he made additions to the house, adding a formal living room and large bedroom in 1900 and a dining room and kitchen on the main floor and four more bedrooms on the second story in 1915.

Nelson died in 1923. His will stated that following the death of his daughter, Ida, the house was to be given to the Norwegian Lutheran Church as a “home for the aged.” It served in that capacity for 38 years.

In 1978, the house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. On October 1, 1987, the “Knute Nelson House” became the headquarters of the Douglas County Historical Society.

The Douglas County Historical Society is located at 1219 Nokomis St. in Alexandria. Office hours are Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., guided house tours are Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

CENTRAL LAKES trail

T

he Central Lakes Trail is a paved biking and walking trail that spans Douglas County from Osakis through Evansville and on to Fergus Falls in Otter Tail County.

The 55-mile-long trail, located on the old Burlington Northern rail line grade, connects the cities of Osakis, Nelson, Alexandria, Garfield, Brandon, Evansville and Melby in Douglas County.

Great for walking, running, bicycling, in-line skating, roller skiing, wheelchairs and more, the trail is open to non-motorized visitors, with the exception of snowmobiles in the winter.

The trail head and parking area in Alexandria are located at the north end of Broadway in Big Ole Central Park. Other trail heads are available in the cities of Osakis, Garfield,

Brandon and Evansville. These trail heads include a parking area, portable restrooms and a trailside shelter.

A bike shelter is also available along the trail about one and one-half miles east of Nelson.

The trail travels through or near woodlands, grasslands, lakes, wetlands and farm country. Those traveling along the trail may see a variety of wildflowers, wildlife and many different trees and plants.

The Central Lakes Trail also connects to the Lake Wobegon trail, which runs from Osakis through Sauk Centre to St. Joseph. Together, they make the longest paved bike trail in the state. The Central Lakes Trail (www.centrallakestrail.com) is used as a snowmobile trail in the winter.

SHARE THE TRAIL BE COURTEOUS All trail users should be respectful of each other, regardless of mode of travel, speed or skill level.

PASS ON THE LEFT Just like a roadway, always pass trail users on the left side and only when it is safe and clear to do so.

RIGHT OF WAY Know the specific rules of your trail, which may be local, county, regional or state controlled. In general, cyclists should yield to all other users.

USE CAUTION AT CROSSINGS There are many types of trail crossings in Minnesota, and they can be very dangerous when not paying full attention. Watch for signage and yield to cross traffic. If there are multiple lanes or blind spots, use extra caution.

SIGNAL WHEN PASSING Bells are great to use when farther back, especially when followed by a greeting, “Good morning, I’ll be passing on your left side” as you approach. Yelling “On yer left” while passing at full speed is neither courteous nor safe.

BE PREDICTABLE Trails can be great for training, but trails are for everyone. Never sacrifice your own or someone else’s safety for convenience. On busy weekends and evenings, fast training may be best left to the road.

Signal your intentions and be sensitive to others.

USE LIGHTS AT NIGHT Some trails may be closed after dark. If open, a white headlight is required along with a rear red reflector. Red taillights are strongly recommended. Dark trails can require brighter lights to see hazards.

DO NOT BLOCK THE TRAIL Group rides are fun, but don’t take up more than your half of the trail. This often means riding single file on the trails.

CLEAN UP LITTER Don’t leave trash on the trail and pick up items (especially glass or other potentially hazardous debris) to make the trail a better place for everyone.

uilt by receding glaciers, Lake Carlos State Park offers a myriad of natural wonders, including a clear and deep lake just perfect for swimming, fishing and boating.

Among its 1,231 acres, nearly one-third of Minnesota’s 80 mammals and more than 150 species of birds find a home either seasonally or all year long. The park also features a year-round naturalist that leads several programs throughout the year.

Paddleboat, canoes, and kayaks are available to rent during the regular season office hours May - October. In the winter, snowshoes are available for rent at the park office. A thermal flipover style portable fish house is available to rent on Lake Carlos only. Contact the park office for current rates and availability.

The park entrance, 2601 County Road 38 Northeast in Carlos, is located 10 miles north of Alexandria on State Highway 29, then two miles west on Highway 38. The best time to contact the park is 9 a.m.-4 p.m. daily at (320) 852-7200.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Whether you’re spending the night at the park or just a few hours, here’s what you need to know: Plan ahead Make reservations and buy your permits in advance. This helps protect you, other visitors and staff by minimizing person-to-person contact. If you buy a vehicle permit online, record your confirmation number and place it on your car’s dashboard.

Be prepared. Bring your own water, soap, hand sanitizer, disinfectants, towels and toilet paper.

Follow the rules. Follow federal, state and MDH/DNR guidelines.

Observe cleaning protocols, follow directional signage and practice social distancing--even outdoors.

Camping and other services Upper and Lower Campgrounds both now open.

All four camper cabins (Eagle, Loon, Raccoon, Frog) now open.

The Equestrian Campground is now open.

Lakeview Group Camp is closed until further notice.

Pioneer Group Camp will open July 1.

Hidden Lake Group Center is closed until further notice.

Bathrooms/showers/vault toilets Sanitation buildings in the Upper and Lower Campgrounds are now open.

They will be cleaned in the mornings, with additional afternoon cleaning of high touch areas. Campers with RVs are requested to use their own units as much as possible to minimize the number of people using park sanitation buildings.

Vault toilets are available in the Equestrian Campground and the Pioneer and Lakeview Group Camps.

The beach sanitation building is closed under further notice.

Water Water spigots will be available throughout the Upper and Lower Campgrounds June 1. RVs are not allowed to attach to these spigots to fill their water tanks - use the RV dump station to fill water tanks.

Water in the Equestrian Campground is on for day use riders needing to water their horses.

There is no water available in the Pioneer or Lakeview Group Camp areas or at the beach sanitation building.

Alexandria City Park is at the north end of Alexandria, one block west of County Rd. 42. It offers a playground, picnic area, tennis courts, swimming beach, bathhouse and fishing pier.

Big Ole Central Park is on the north end of Broadway in Alexandria, next to Lake Agnes. It features a gazebo and kiosk shelter and serves as a trail head for the Central Lakes Trail.

Dean Melton Fillmore Park is at Fillmore Street and 15th Ave. W in Alexandria.
