fter getting a taste of an early spring, the return of cold weather really put a damper on the hopes of a longer outdoor season.

Fortunately, we Minnesotans are a hardy bunch and bounce back quickly, taking life as it comes in this part of the country.

From the first hint of spring to the drop of the last leaf, Minnesotans revel in the outdoor life we have available to us, and the Alexandria lakes area has much to enjoy.

The return of summer is marked by Memorial Day and Ole Oppe Fest. Formerly Awake the Lakes, the festival includes the Memorial Day parade and ceremony to honor our troops as well as music, food and entertainment. Rain or shine, we get you ready for the summer days that are just on the horizon.

Love the water? Then head for one of the many lakes for swimming, skiing, boating or fishing. Prefer to stay on dry ground? There are nine golf courses for Lori Mork you to choose from. Or skate, hike or bike along the EDITOR Central Lakes Trail. There are many state, county and city parks where you can enjoy camping or maybe a picnic.

You can spend a Saturday night at the Viking Speedway where the racing action is hot and heavy, or maybe you prefer an indoor activity. Alexandria has just what you’re looking for.

You can browse for antiques, shop Alexandria’s historic downtown or the Viking Plaza, see a movie at the nine-screen theater or tour a winery. You can explore the area’s fascinating museums and history, including the controversial Kensington Runestone.

Still haven’t found your niche? If your taste runs toward the artistic, there are many wonderful theater productions and concerts to enjoy. Alexandria and the surrounding area provide a variety of parades, celebrations, and arts and crafts shows throughout the summer. There’s even an amusement park, go-cart racing, horseback riding and a water park for you to enjoy.

Then flavor your day with a stop at one of the fine local restaurants or coffee shops where the food and the ambience will refresh you.

community organization based in Alexandria and dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in West Central Minnesota through its beautiful orchestra music, the Central Lakes Symphony Orchestra is an organization more than 50 members strong from the communities of Alexandria, Brandon, Carlos, Fergus Falls, Garfield, Glenwood, Miltona, Nelson, Osakis, Villard and Vining.

The orchestra, led by Jefferson High School Orchestra Director Brad Lambrecht, gives musicians a venue to participate in serious music with a symphony orchestra and helps to give back to the community through donations and student scholarships.

eating 1,013 people, the Performing Arts Center (PAC) at Alexandria Area High School is the largest auditorium in Douglas County and the main stage for many local theater and musical performances for the entire community.

A

dding to the diversity of entertainment in the Alexandria lakes area, the Central Lakes Concert Association brings beautiful musical performances right to the community.

On Saturday, May 13, Travis Ledoyt will bring his Tribute to the King to Alexandria. Considered to have the best tribute to the “young” Elvis, Ledoyt will share many of the songs that made Elvis Presley a worldwide star, including All Shook Up, Don’t Be Cruel, I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You, Love Me Tender and Viva Las Vegas.

Ledoyt was featured in the New York Times Magazine article “World’s Best Young Elvis.” He allows his audience to travel back in time to a genuine 1956 concert.

Formed in 1983, the first season of CLCA included four concerts and has expanded to include reciprocity with the Sauk Centre Concert Association, as well as Ortonville/Milbank, Brainerd, Fergus Falls and Wadena, giving patrons an enormous variety of entertainment from September through May. A season membership, which includes tickets to all concerts in Alexandria and the five other communities involved in the CLCA, is just $45 per adult, or $100 for a family membership.

Students receive a membership for just $15.

All Alexandria performances are held at the Alexandria Area High School.

New exhibits at the EAC

Knute Nelson home houses Alexandria history

I

nterested in local history? Visit the Douglas County Historical Society and take a guided tour of the famous Knute Nelson house, home of one of Alexandria’s most famous residents. Nelson, who served the people of Minnesota in public office for more than 50 years, was elected to the Minnesota Legislature, and served two terms in the U.S. Congress before becoming the state’s first foreign-born governor. He then served in the U.S. Senate for 28 years.

Nelson claimed a homestead in Alexandria in 1871 and built a small house on the property in 1874. As his political career progressed, he made additions to the house, adding a

formal living room and large bedroom in 1900 and a dining room and kitchen on the main floor and four more bedrooms on the second story in 1915.

Nelson died in 1923. His will stated that following the death of his daughter, Ida, the house was to be given to the Norwegian Lutheran Church as a “home for the aged.” It served in that capacity for 38 years.

In 1978, the house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. On October 1, 1987, the “Knute Nelson House” became the headquarters of the Douglas County Historical Society.

THE DOUGLAS COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY was organized in 1976 to discover, preserve and disseminate the history of the county and its people.

RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC include a research library with church, school, cemetery and family history files, and microfilm of census records and area newspapers dating back to 1875.

STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS are available to assist with research.

Summer kicks off with Memorial Day programs, Ole Oppe Fest, parades

C

elebrate the summer with Alexandria’s summer kickoff event – Ole Oppe Fest, featuring live music, food, activities, wing sauce competition, beer garden and more.

Held on Memorial Day weekend, Ole Oppe Fest will be celebrated Friday-Monday, May 26-29 on the shores of Lake Agnes, just north of downtown at Big Ole Park.

The festival originally began as a thank you to the community

after donations poured in to renovate Alexandria’s most famous landmark, Big Ole, and eventually became an annual event.

Dubbed Ole Oppe Fest (oppe means “up” in Norwegian), this event celebrated Big Ole’s new paint job and reinforced body.

Many other events are held in conjuction with the Big Ole celebration, including car shows, sidewalk sales, church services, a pancake breakfast and 5K and 10K runs.

Rain or shine, the celebration will be held on Second Avenue. Make sure not to miss it!

t’s one of Minnesota’s favorite pastimes - fishing and at this time of year, enthusiasts are gearing up for the opening of fishing season on Saturday, May 13.

A great excuse to get out on one of the many lakes in the Alexandria area, fishing is a wonderful way to enjoy the sun, relax and unwind.

If you don’t have your own boat, many resorts offer rentals. You can also hire a fishing guide to show you the ins and outs of the area lakes, helping you search out the many species of fish available.

If you’re going to fish in Minnesota, however, don’t forget to pick up a fishing license. Anyone age 16-89 needs to have a current Minnesota fishing license in order to hook that lunker. Those younger than 16 or 90 and older do not need a license to fish.

There are a few free fishing weekends in Minnesota: May 13-14 - Take A Mom Fishing when Minnesota resident moms fish free; June 9-11 - Take A Kid Fishing, where residents 16 and older fish free with children younger than 16.

Lake Carlos State Park is a world of natural wonders

uilt by receding glaciers, Lake Carlos State Park a myriad of natural wonders, including a clear and deep lake just perfect for swimming, fishing and boating. Among its 1,231 acres, nearly one-third of Minnesota’s 80 mammals and more than 150 species of birds find a home either seasonally or all year long. It’s the perfect place to view loons, grebes, ducks and heron, making this a bird watcher’s paradise! You may even catch a glimpse of the beaver and deer that make their homes within the park.

Winter or summer, Lake Carlos State Park is a magnet for outdoor enthusiasts.

This program covers the basics of archery (safety, proper care of the equipment and how to use a bow).

PADDLE THE LONG PRAIRIE RIVER Saturday, June 24 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Explore the Long Prairie and the shorelines of Lake Carlos. This section is appropriate for beginners through experts and participants will be under the guidance of experienced instructors. It starts at the boat access at Lake Carlos State Park. Paddlers will travel from the park to the headwaters of the Long Prairie River, then down the first section of the state water trail. All ages are welcome, but children must be accompanied by an adult. Cost is $15 per canoe, which includes a shuttle, equipment, life jackets and instruction from the naturalist. Bring a lunch, sunscreen, bug spray and a hat.

Space is limited to 10 paddlers with five riders. Registration is required. A Minnesota State Park vehicle permit is required.

Legacy of the Lakes Museum and Gardens is a look back in time

M

uch of Minnesota’s history is inspired by the many beautiful lakes throughout our state, and the Legacy of the Lakes Museum and Gardens is dedicated to bringing that history to the public.

Open from May 23 to October 31, the museum features handcrafted wooden boats, grand hotels and fishing clubs, bringing to life traditions that reach back nearly a century and a half.

This year’s special exhibits include Touch the Sky: Prairie Photographs

by Jim Brandenburg and Resort of the Year: Lutsen

Resort on Minnesota’s North Shore.

These diverse exhibits, as well as the Gardens, are all part of the Legacy of the Lakes Museum, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of antique and classic watercraft, resort memorabilia and sporting equipment used on the Minnesota lakes.

Cell phone tours are now available to visitors, offering information about points of interest noted by small signs to indicate an audio stop.

The museum is located in downtown Alexandria at 205 Third Avenue West, near the Alexandria Fire Department. Visit the site of the original Runestone

T

he original farm site of Olaf Ohman, Kensington Rune Stone Park is the location of the discovery of the infamous Kensington Runestone, now housed at the Runestone Museum in Alexandria.

The park consists of 304 acres of wooded, gently rolling land and is used by families for picnics and reunions, businesses and other groups for pleasure outings, and winter sports enthusiasts for skiing, tobogganing and snowmobiling. There are two picnic shelter areas and a range of outdoor recreation activities including, volleyball, horseshoes, and hiking. Several history displays are maintained to help interpret the Rune Stone Park story.

The shelters at the park can be reserved by calling the Douglas County Park Division office at (320) 762-2966.

The park is located in Solem Township of Douglas County. From Alexandria, go west on State Trunk Highway 27 approximately 14 miles to County Highway 103. Go 1-1\2 miles south on Highway 103 to the park entrance road.

All road surfaces to and inside Kensington Rune Stone Park are paved.

National Safe Boating Week, May 20-26, seeks to remind people about the importance of being safe while on the water.

Always wear a personal flotation device A brightly colored personal flotation device is much like a seat belt; it greatly increases your chances of survival in many situations. It prolongs your body’s ability to fight hypothermia by reducing heat loss, and it keeps you afloat if you’re knocked unconscious or are feeling weak. Make sure the fit of your personal flotation device is appropriate for your weight and activity.

Do not drink alcohol Alcohol slows down your reflexes and dulls your ability to react to the unexpected. The effects are amplified by the sun, wind and movement of the water, which in turn affect your vision and balance. Not only does alcohol increase your chances of an accident or falling into the water, it reduces your chances of survival in an emergency.

Be prepared Make sure you have on board all the necessary equipment for your type of vessel, such as anchor, radio, buoys and navigation lights. Know where you’re going and respect the maximum load capacity of your boat.

Never boat alone No one can help you in an emergency if you’re alone.

If you do go out by yourself, tell someone the route you plan to follow and take a cell phone, whistle or navigation lights with you so you can call for help or send a distress signal if necessary.

Something for everyone

T

he Central Lakes Trail is a paved, biking and walking trail that spans Douglas County from Osakis through Evansville and on to Fergus Falls in Otter Tail County.

The 55-mile-long trail, located on the old Burlington Northern rail line grade, connects the cities of Osakis, Nelson, Alexandria, Garfield, Brandon, Evansville and Melby in Douglas County.

The trail head and parking area in Alexandria are located

at the north end of Broadway in Big Ole Central Park. Other trail heads are available in the cities of Osakis, Garfield, Brandon and Evansville. These trail heads include a parking area, portable restrooms and a trailside shelter. A bike shelter is also available along the trail about one and one-half miles east of Nelson.

The Central Lakes Trail also connects to the Lake Wobegon trail, which runs from Osakis through Sauk Centre to St. Joseph. Together, they make the longest paved bike trail in the state. The Central Lakes Trail (www.centrallakestrail.com) is used as a snowmobile trail in the winter.

Share the Trail BE COURTEOUS All trail users should be respectful of each other, regardless of mode of travel, speed or skill level.

PASS ON THE LEFT Just like a roadway, always pass trail users on the left side and only when it is safe and clear to do so.

RIGHT OF WAY Know the specific rules of your trail, which may be local, county, regional or state controlled. In general, cyclists should yield to all other users.

USE CAUTION AT CROSSINGS There are many types of trail crossings in Minnesota, and they can be very dangerous when not paying full attention. Watch for signage and yield to cross traffic. If there are multiple lanes or blind spots, use extra caution.

SIGNAL WHEN PASSING Bells are great to use when farther back, especially when followed by a greeting, “Good morning, I’ll be passing on your left side” as you approach. Yelling “On yer left” while passing at full speed is not courteous or safe.

BE PREDICTABLE Trails can be great for training, but trails are for everyone. Never sacrifice your own or someone else’s safety for convenience. On busy weekends and evenings, fast training may be best left to the road.

Signal your intentions and be sensitive to others.

USE LIGHTS AT NIGHT Some trails may be closed after dark. If open, a white headlight is required along with a rear red reflector. Red taillights are strongly recommended. Dark trails can require brighter lights to see hazards.

DO NOT BLOCK THE TRAIL Group rides are fun, but don’t take up more than your half of the trail. This often means riding single file on the trails.

CLEAN UP LITTER Don’t leave trash on the trail and pick up items (especially glass or other potentially hazardous debris) to make the trail a better place for everyone.

CITY PARKS

Alexandria City Park is at the north end of Alexandria, one block west of County Rd. 42. It offers a playground, picnic area, tennis courts, swimming beach, bathhouse and fishing pier.

Noonan Park is at Nokomis Street and 10th Ave. in Alexandria.

Oak Knoll Park is on the northeast side of Alexandria near McKay Ave. Take Hwy. 29 North, turn right on McKay Ave. and left on Oak Knoll Dr.

Big Ole Central Park is on the north end of Broadway in Alexandria, next to Lake Agnes. It features a gazebo, kiosk shelter and serves as a trail head for the Central Lakes Trail.

Osagi Park is on Lake St. in Osakis. It features picnic tables and shelter, restrooms, playground and lakeshore (no swimming area).

Dean Melton Fillmore Park is at Fillmore St. and 15th Ave. West in Alexandria.

Pooch Playland is a dog park with a fenced-in area located at the south end of Victor St. in Alexandria.

Fred Foslien Park is in Victoria Heights, two blocks south of County Rd. 82 off Knut Street in Alexandria.

Geneva Crest Park is on the west side of Lake Geneva in Alexandria (take County Rd. 82 East, turn north on Birch Ave., go 3/4 mile, go east on Basswood two blocks and north on Geneva Dr.).

Goose Park is three blocks west of Broadway on Fifth Avenue West in Alexandria.

Lake Agnes Park is on the south shore of Lake Agnes along County Rd. 37 in Alexandria.

Lake Connie Park is on Seventh Ave. East between Roosevelt and Spruce streets in Alexandria.

Lakeview Park is near County Rd. 82 East and Birch Ave. in Alexandria (take County Rd. 82 East to Birch Ave., turn west on Runestone Place and west on Lake Park Ave.).

Legion Park is at Broadway and Eighth Ave. West in Alexandria.

Manor Hills Park is in Alexandria. Take Hwy. 29 North to Manor Dr. and go two blocks to the right on Springdale.

Martin’s Hope Park is on Second Ave. across the street from Big Ole Central Park.

Runestone Park is about one mile east of Broadway in Alexandria on Sixth Ave. East.

COUNTY PARKS

Chippewa Park is three miles north of Brandon on County Rd. 108. It features picnic tables, shelters, charcoal grills, restrooms, showers, drinking water, a swimming beach (no lifeguard), playground, horseshoe pit and camping sites.

Curt Felt Memorial Park is north of Alexandria off County Rd. 42. It has a volleyball court, playground, a picnic shelter, restrooms, horseshoe courts and a softball field.

Lake Brophy Park, located on the north side of Lake Brophy, is the newest addition to the county’s park system. Take County Road 82 west of Alexandria to the Brophy Landing road. Currently, the park is mostly undeveloped but includes a parking area, portable restroom, dock and fire ring. It also includes natural surface trails for walking, biking, and running, as well as access to the Central Lakes Trail.

Lake Brophy Wayside Park is west of Alexandria at the intersection of County Rds. 82 and 8. It has picnic tables, charcoal grills, restroom, drinking water, playground and views of Lake Brophy.

Kensington Runestone Park is 15 miles west of Alexandria on State Hwy. 27.

It’s where the famed Kensington Rune Stone was found. There are picnic tables, shelters, charcoal grills, electricity, restrooms, drinking water, heated building with kitchen facilities, softball field, horseshoe pit, volleyball court, playground, hiking and cross country ski trails and historic displays.

Spruce Hill Park is near Miltona (from Alexandria, take Hwy. 29 to County Rd. 5 and go east five miles). It has picnic tables, shelters, charcoal grills, electricity, restrooms, drinking water, softball field, and interpretive, hiking and cross country ski trails.

STATE PARK

Lake Carlos State Park is near Carlos.

Take State Hwy. 29 north from Alexandria, turn west on County Rd. 38, turn left into park. Permit is required; purchase at park office ($5/day, $25/year).

The park features hiking, snowshoe, cross-country ski and snowmobile trails, picnic tables, shelters, swimming beach, canoe/paddleboat rentals, play area, camp sites, camper cabins, group camp, restrooms, showers, boat landing, amphitheater, visitor/interpretive center, naturalist programs, geocaching, equestrian area, skating area and fishouse rental.

Birthplace of America

P

erhaps one of the most eye-catching “landmarks” in Alexandria is Big Ole – a 28-foot tall Viking statue that stands at the north end of Broadway.

Born in 1965, the Viking has become a much-respected resident in the lakes area.

The idea for the statue began in January of 1964 when North Star World’s Fair Corporation in Osseo began working on an addition to the Minnesota display for the New York World’s Fair. The display was to feature the historical Kensington Runestone in an animated scene titled “Minnesota, Birthplace of America.”

The new item to coincide with this display was the 28-foot, four-ton Viking statue.

Big Ole was completed by Gorden Displays of Minneapolis in April of 1965 and

was transported to New York just in time for the World’s Fair.

Big Ole arrived at his home in Alexandria in front of the Runestone Museum in December of 1965. Now, more than 50 years later, he still stands strong.

KENSINGTON RUNESTONE It’s a controversy more than 100 years in the making: Did an immigrant Swedish farmer find a buried rock in 1898 that contained an ancient runic message carved

by Viking explorers 100 years before Columbus landed in America? Or is the whole thing a hoax, perpetrated by the farmer or some other prankster?

A large replica of the Kensington Runestone is located at a small, wayside rest. Visitors can read the inscription and take a photo by the replica. The replica is located in a small park at the east end of Sixth Avenue in Alexandria.

FORT ALEXANDRIA Houses the Runestone Museum and is a nearly exact replica of the stockade built in 1862 and contains several original buildings, including an 1889 church, a log cabin built in the late 1860s and an 1885 schoolhouse.
