aaah! Summer is finally here! It’s the season that everyone in the lakes area eagerly awaits. With summer comes the rising temperatures, and activity in the lakes area heats up. Everywhere you look, you’ll find something exciting at your fingertips, whether it be running, swimming, biking, or just exploring all the attractions that Alexandria has to offer.

Music lovers can enjoy many top-notch marching bands at the Vikingland Band Festival as schools and communities from around the state vie for titles. Take in the variety of musical performances in the area as Music on the Courthouse Lawn returns each Thursday and special musical presentations are on the docket on selected Friday nights at the Maritime Museum Gardens.

Awake the Lakes/Ribfest is a celebration of summer in the lakes area – food, fun and lots to see – down at Big Ole Park on June 24. You’ll even get a chance to Lori Mork vote for the best ribs around!

EDITOR Head out to one of our many golf courses, and of course, who can forget our multitude of lakes? Cool, clear water. Perfect for boating, skiing, sailing, fishing, pontooning and swimming. What could be more perfect in the summer?

Music on the courthouse lawn

lues, country, rock and roll. The music menu at the Concerts on the Courthouse Lawn each Thursday throughout the summer holds a variety that appeals to the toe-tapper in everyone.

Beginning May 25 with 57 Chevy, these weekly concerts run through the end of August and are presented by the Red Willow Arts Coalition (RWAC).

have become one of the area’s most popular social gatherings, where friends and family get together to listen to music.

The RWAC, formed in 2009 to promote the arts and provide entertainment in the lakes area, has been bringing this all together for music fans on the lawn of the Douglas County Courthouse free of charge for several years and plans to provide entertainment again this summer. Just bring your lawn chair or blanket and grab a seat.

pening in October 2010, Lakes Area Theatre has entertained audiences, both live and on the radio, for more than five years, bringing to life mysteries, comedies, detective stories, suspense, drama and westerns.

Lakes Area Theatre performs its shows before a live audience, recording the shows and playing them back on KXRA 1490 AM and from a network of radio stations.

ow in its 57TH year, Theatre L’Homme Dieu (TLHD) again presents exceptional and entertaining live theater in the Alexandria lakes area. TLHD partners with national and regional theaters to present five productions throughout the summer.

TLHD’s first production will be Sweet Land, the musical, running June 20-25.

Inge Altenberg journeys to 1920 Minnesota to marry a bachelor farmer, sight unseen, but Inge’s German heritage turns her new neighbors against the match. This is

a lyrical celebration of hard-won independence and a reflection of generations past.

Marching to the music

f you love a parade – and who doesn’t – make sure you find your way to Alexandria Sunday, June 25 at 1:30 p.m. for the 33rd annual Vikingland Band Festival’s Parade Marching Championship. This event features the elite among marching bands from the Midwest and will be highlighted by three marching bands from Calgary, Alberta serving as honor units.

and Bugle Corps, as well as the River City Rhythm Drum and Bugle Corps, will serve as honor bands for the parade.

Other bands in the field show lineup include the Govenaires of St. Peter and Chops, Inc. of Minneapolis.

On Saturday at 6:30 p.m., you can catch the premiere of the 2017 Minnesota Drum Corps at the Alexandria Area High School’s Viking Bank Field.

Golf courses abound in the lakes area

F

or winter weary Minnesotans, spring offers freedom from the confines of their homes and one of the first places they head to are the golf courses.

The Alexandria area certainly doesn’t lack for green fairways, with more than 15

courses available for those hungry for the challenge.

Minnesota consistently ranks at or near the top in golfer participation. In fact, in 2005, it has the highest number of golfers per capita of any state in the U.S., according to the National Golf Foundation.

Many think Minnesota’s golf season is short, but most years there are six full months of golf opportunities on courses that are lush and full.

GOOD HOSTS Minnesota is the only state to have hosted all USGA national championships, the Walker Cup, Curtis Cup and the men’s and women’s state team championships as well as the Ryder Cup in 2016. It hosted the PGA Championships in 1932, 1954, 1959, 2002, 2008 and 2009.

undreds of visitors will tour their way through the breathtaking gardens featured on the Master Gardeners’ Tour of Gardens here in Douglas County on July 9 – make sure you are among them!

The tour will display of some of the area’s finest gardens. The 2017 event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sponsored by the Douglas County Master Gardeners and the University of Minnesota Extension Division, the event features six different area gardens.

The gardens may be viewed in any order in an open house format, and brochures with addresses, garden features and maps will be available at the Douglas County Extension Office, Runestone Museum and many retail locations in Douglas County.

Tickets are $5 and are available at any tour location the day of the event. Hosts will be available at each site to guide you and answer questions.

appy Fourth of July! From land, lakes and air, many events will take place in and around the Alexandria area to celebrate Independence Day. Here in the land of 10,000 lakes, we know how to celebrate the right way with plenty of fireworks displays and summer fun.

The Alexandria area is full of traditional and non-traditional fireworks

displays for you to enjoy, and many of the surrounding communities put on light shows as well. You can also find a spot on the shore of one of the many area lakes that will host boat parades.

And if you’re looking for something a little different, there’s Star Storm 2017, held at Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center on Tuesday, July 4, beginning at dusk. Choreographed fireworks are computer synchronized to music and broadcast on the radio.

WHICH PRESIDENTS DIED ON THE 4TH? They were John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe. Adams, the second president, and Jefferson, the third president, both died on the same day in 1826.

WHAT OTHER WERE NEAR MISSES? Zachary Taylor attended ceremonies for the Washington Memorial on July 4, 1850 and returned to the White House for a bowl of cherries and milk. He became sick to his stomach that night and died five days later. On July 2, 1881, James Garfield was shot and died several months later.

HOW MANY PEOPLE SIGNED THE DECLARATION ON THE 4TH? Only two people signed the Declaration of Independence on the Fourth of July, with most signers actually signing the document on August 2, 1776.

WHO WERE THE OLDEST AND YOUNGEST SIGNERS? Ben Franklin was the oldest at 70 and Edward Rutledge was the youngest at 26 years old. Pennsylvania had the most signers at nine.

ars of all makes and models will be on display at the 29th annual Vintage Car Show and Swap Meet on June 25 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.

Rain or shine, the gates open at 7 a.m. and cars are displayed until around 3 p.m.

Approximately 250 show entries are expected with Vintage Car Club members displaying nearly 100 cars. The public can also display vehicles for sale.

Many indoor and outdoor vendors will display and sell their wares.

Alexandria’s Vintage Car Club will hold a drawing for a boys’ and a girls’ 20-inch bike and for radio-controlled cars. In addition, 200 model cars will be given away, and help will be provided to assemble them.

The Vintage Car Club of Alexandria was organized in 1970 as a group that shared an interest in keeping alive the memories of cars and trucks from the past. The club supports many non-profit organizations in the local area and this is the second year for this show to spotlight the need for support of our local food shelf.

General admission for the event is $4.

Runestone Museum will hold a special presentation of Minnesota history

S

ee history come alive at the Runestone Museum and Fort Alexandria on June 23-24 with a special presentation for all ages.

The museum will hold its outdoor heritage day that includes re-enactors, demonstrations from the pioneer and fur trade era, including wool dyeing and spinning, Dutch oven cooking, traditional crafts and hands-on activities for childen.

You can learn about Ojibwe camp life and experience a cowboy shoot-out, a oneroom school, and even visit with a Civil War soldier and nurse. Along with the Runestone, the museum holds exhibits on Native Americans, early immigrant history, the history of Alexandria, a memorial/gun exhibit, a Minnesota wildlife exhibit, and a hands-on children’s area.

FORT ALEXANDRIA Houses the Runestone Museum and is a nearly exact replica of the stockade built in 1862. It contains several original buildings, including an 1889 church, a log cabin built in the late 1860s and an 1885 schoolhouse.

The one-day event features something for everyone. The popular Ribfest will be back, along with a live band, beer garden, fireworks, kid-friendly activities and more.

A local non-profit organization, aptly named Awake the Lakes, has taken over the event from the Alexandria Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce.

As in the past, events will take place on Second Avenue by Big Ole Central Park.

Ribfest will take place, rain or shine, under a large tent. A big trophy and bragging rights will go to the champions.

The public, of course, will have the chance to feast on the ribs. If ribs aren’t your thing, there will be other food vendors, serving a variety of tasty choices.

THREE DIVISIONS OF CHEFS There will be three divisions in the Ribfest rib cooking contest: Professional, Amateur and Newbie.

VENDORS There will also be vendors on site selling a variety of items.

nique among Midwestern standup paddleboarding events, the second Big Ole SUP-athon is a two-day event designed to help promote paddle sports while raising funds for the local United Way. With races for all skill levels, take your pick from a 2.5, 6, 11.5 and 26mile competitions being held Thurs-

day-Friday, July 13-14 near Bug-A-Boo Bay on Lake L’ Homme Dieu as you support local charities.

Thursday night will be highlighted by the West Bay Loop where you’re free to paddle the 2.5 miles from Rotary Beach to Bug-A-Boo Bay from 6-9 p.m.

Starting early on Friday, the 26-mile Big Ole SUP-athon will begin at 7 a.m. and will feature miles of open water that will help eliminate crowding. There will be food and water stations every two to five miles along all three courses.

erhaps one of the most eye-catching “landmarks” in Alexandria is Big Ole – a 28-foot tall Viking statue that stands at the north end of Broadway.

Born in 1965, the Viking has become a much-respected resident in the lakes area.

The idea for the statue began in January of 1964 when North Star World’s Fair Corporation in Osseo began working on an addition to the Minnesota display for the New York World’s Fair. The display was to feature the historical Kensington Runestone in an animated scene titled “Minnesota, Birthplace of America.” The new item to coincide with this display was the 28-foot, four-ton Viking statue.

Big Ole was completed by Gorden Displays of Minneapolis in April 1965 and was transported to New York just in time for the World’s Fair.

Big Ole arrived at his home in Alexandria in front of the Runestone Museum in December 1965. Now, more than 50 years later, he still stands strong.

KENSINGTON RUNESTONE It’s a controversy more than 100 years in the making: Did an immigrant Swedish farmer find a buried rock in 1898 that contained an ancient runic message carved

by Viking explorers 100 years before Columbus landed in America? Or is the whole thing a hoax, perpetrated by the farmer or some other prankster?

Legacy of the Lakes Museum and Gardens is a look back in time

M

uch of Minnesota’s history is inspired by the many beautiful lakes throughout our state, and the Legacy of the Lakes Museum and Gardens is dedicated to bringing that history to the public.

Open from May 23 to October 31, the museum features handcrafted wooden boats, grand hotels and fishing clubs, bringing to life traditions that reach back nearly a century and a half.

This year’s special exhibits include Touch the Sky: Prairie Photographs by Jim Brandenburg and Resort of the Year: Lutsen Resort on Minnesota’s North Shore.

These diverse exhibits, as well as the gardens, are all part of the Legacy of the Lakes Museum, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of antique

and classic watercraft, resort memorabilia and sporting equipment used on the Minnesota lakes.

Cell phone tours are now available to visitors, offering information about points of interest noted by small signs to indicate an audio stop.

The museum is located in downtown Alexandria at 205 Third Avenue West, near the Alexandria Fire Department. uilt by receding glaciers, Lake Carlos State Park is a myriad of natural wonders, including a clear and deep lake just perfect for swimming, fishing and boating.

Something for everyone

T

he Central Lakes Trail is a paved, biking and walking trail that spans Douglas County from Osakis through Evansville and on to Fergus Falls in Otter Tail County.

The 55-mile-long trail, located on the old Burlington Northern rail line grade, connects the cities of Osakis, Nelson, Alexandria, Garfield, Brandon, Evansville and Melby in Douglas County.

The trail head and parking area in Alexandria are located

at the north end of Broadway in Big Ole Central Park. Other trail heads are available in the cities of Osakis, Garfield, Brandon and Evansville. These trail heads include a parking area, portable restrooms and a trailside shelter. A bike shelter is also available along the trail about one and one-half miles east of Nelson.

The Central Lakes Trail also connects to the Lake Wobegon trail, which runs from Osakis through Sauk Centre to St. Joseph. Together, they make the longest paved bike trail in the state. The Central Lakes Trail (www.centrallakestrail. com) is used as a snowmobile trail in the winter.

pruce Hill Lutheran Church began as a log structure built in 1881. Now under the care of the Douglas County Historical Society, Spruce Hill Lutheran Church actually began in 1876 on a split log table in the home of Anders Lustig, where a small group of Swedish settlers gathered to write the first documents of the Svenska Augustana Synod Forsamlingen.

Now a historic site, Spruce Hill Church now holds annual traditional

Easter and Christmas services, along with a midsummer hymn fest. It can also be reserved for weddings, funerals and other events approved by the board.

The original church had seats of wooden planks set on stumps and the pulpit was an upright log. The present church was completed in 1902 and in 1913, a horse barn was added. The church became inactive in 1967 when Spruce Hill and Faith Lutheran of Miltona merged.

CITY PARKS

Alexandria City Park is at the north end of Alexandria, one block west of County Rd. 42. It offers a playground, picnic area, tennis courts, swimming beach, bathhouse and fishing pier.

Noonan Park is at Nokomis Street and 10th Ave. in Alexandria.

Oak Knoll Park is on the northeast side of Alexandria near McKay Ave. Take Hwy. 29 North, turn right on McKay Ave. and left on Oak Knoll Dr.

Big Ole Central Park is on the north end of Broadway in Alexandria, next to Lake Agnes. It features a gazebo, kiosk shelter and serves as a trail head for the Central Lakes Trail.

Osagi Park is on Lake St. in Osakis. It features picnic tables and shelter, restrooms, playground and lakeshore (no swimming area).

Dean Melton Fillmore Park is at Fillmore St. and 15th Ave. West in Alexandria.

Pooch Playland is a dog park with a fenced-in area located at the south end of Victor St. in Alexandria.

Fred Foslien Park is in Victoria Heights, two blocks south of County Rd. 82 off Knut Street in Alexandria.

Geneva Crest Park is on the west side of Lake Geneva in Alexandria (take County Rd. 82 East, turn north on Birch Ave., go 3/4 mile, go east on Basswood two blocks and north on Geneva Dr.).

Goose Park is three blocks west of Broadway on Fifth Avenue West in Alexandria.

Lake Agnes Park is on the south shore of Lake Agnes along County Rd. 37 in Alexandria.

Lake Connie Park is on Seventh Ave. East between Roosevelt and Spruce streets in Alexandria.

Lakeview Park is near County Rd. 82 East and Birch Ave. in Alexandria (take County Rd. 82 East to Birch Ave., turn west on Runestone Place and west on Lake Park Ave.).

Legion Park is at Broadway and Eighth Ave. West in Alexandria.

Manor Hills Park is in Alexandria. Take Hwy. 29 North to Manor Dr. and go two blocks to the right on Springdale.

Martin’s Hope Park is on Second Ave. across the street from Big Ole Central Park.

Runestone Park is about one mile east of Broadway in Alexandria on Sixth Ave. East.

COUNTY PARKS

Chippewa Park is three miles north of Brandon on County Rd. 108. It features picnic tables, shelters, charcoal grills, restrooms, showers, drinking water, a swimming beach (no lifeguard), playground, horseshoe pit and camping sites.

Curt Felt Memorial Park is north of Alexandria off County Rd. 42. It has a volleyball court, playground, a picnic shelter, restrooms, horseshoe courts and a softball field.

Lake Brophy Park, located on the north side of Lake Brophy, is the newest addition to the county’s park system. Take County Road 82 west of Alexandria to the Brophy Landing road. Currently, the park is mostly undeveloped but includes a parking area, portable restroom, dock and fire ring. It also includes natural surface trails for walking, biking, and running, as well as access to the Central Lakes Trail.

Lake Brophy Wayside Park is west of Alexandria at the intersection of County Rds. 82 and 8. It has picnic tables, charcoal grills, restroom, drinking water, playground and views of Lake Brophy.

Kensington Runestone Park is 15 miles west of Alexandria on State Hwy. 27. It’s where the famed Kensington Runestone was found. There are picnic tables, shelters, charcoal grills, electricity, restrooms, drinking water, heated building with kitchen facilities, softball field, horseshoe pit, volleyball court, playground, hiking and cross country ski trails and historic displays.

Spruce Hill Park is near Miltona (from Alexandria, take Hwy. 29 to County Rd. 5 and go east five miles). It has picnic tables, shelters, charcoal grills, electricity, restrooms, drinking water, softball field, and interpretive, hiking and cross country ski trails.

STATE PARK

Lake Carlos State Park is near Carlos.

Take State Hwy. 29 north from Alexandria, turn west on County Rd. 38, turn left into park. Permit is required; purchase at park office ($5/day, $25/year).

The park features hiking, snowshoe, cross-country ski and snowmobile trails, picnic tables, shelters, swimming beach, canoe/paddleboat rentals, play area, camp sites, camper cabins, group camp, restrooms, showers, boat landing, amphitheater, visitor/interpretive center, naturalist programs, geocaching, equestrian area, skating area and fishouse rental.
