hat’s more fun than summer in Minnesota? Having lived here most of my life, I can honestly say I can’t think of anything. It’s a time to head outside as the sun warms your face, the lakes call your name and the fireflies dance for your pleasure. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else, and here at the Vacationer, we want to share all this with you.

July and August are the pinnacle months of the summer season, and this issue will get you in touch with what’s in store. The lakes area is filled with celebrations as nearly every small community has special days set aside to celebrate its history.

The lakes here are spectacular! Boating, fishing and water-skiing opportunities are everywhere, but my favorite is a quiet pontoon ride and a long Lori Mork evening on the dock watching the sun go down. It EDITOR relaxes my mind and settles my soul.

If you love to golf – this is the place! We have nine golf courses waiting for you to tee off. But if you’d rather watch, we will be celebrating the 93rd annual Resorters Golf Tournament at the Alexandria Golf Club August 3-9. You may even be able to catch a glimpse of professional golfer Tom Lehman, a native of Alexandria, who is often on the sidelines of the tournament.

You’ll find talented artists from around the state displaying their works at Art in the Park this July. I never fail to find something wonderful to bring home when browsing through the booths.

I know as you look through the Vacationer, you’ll find something that sparks your interest here in the Alexandria area. Every day is filled with possibilites.

eople from all over the Upper Midwest will be displaying their boats at Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center during the Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum’s Chain of Lakes Classic Boat Show on Saturday, July 12.

as part of the competition. Land displays are also available and classic boats are welcome in any condition.

A large variety of watercraft will be shown on land and in the water at this year’s event, so come for the memories and the fun. This show is a celebration of summer and a great showcase of Alexandria’s lake history.

Admission to the boat show is free to the public and Arrowwood will have lunch and refreshments available on the grounds.

Events scheduled for Saturday, July 12 include a land and water showing from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and awards at 2:30 p.m. There may also be a boat drive-by at 3 p.m., weather permitting.

An informal lake cruise will be held after the show, weather permitting.

The show-n-shine event from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. is held on Central and Main, and offers a chance for car lovers to see glistening chrome, hear revving engines and talk to car owners about their classic cars.

Starting at 2:30 p.m., awards and prizes will be distributed to registered car owners. After the awards are given, all of the cars will roll through the streets of Osakis, starting on Main Street and ending at the Community Memorial Home parking lot for the residents to enjoy.

Golf action at its finest

I

n the tradition it has followed for 93 years, the 93rd Resorters Golf Tournament will provide some of the most exciting and memorable golf action available.

But more than that, it is a family affair, providing traditions that connect the past to the present, bringing new generations of families to the lakes area.

Many of the best golfers in the state will be competing in the week-long event. The galleries will be filled with family and golf enthusiasts, all on hand to share the beautiful drives, the

errant shots and the game-winning putts on a course filled with history and signature holes.

The tournament will include not only some very serious competition that kicks off with the annual Pro-Am on opening Sunday, but some lively fun as well with a putting contest and the ever-quirky derby, sure to coax a laugh from even the most serious player.

Many high profile athletes have competed in this tourney, most notably professional golfer and Alexandria graduate Tom Lehman, who won the Resorters title in 1980. The Alexandria Golf Club is the place that the PGA Tour professional and USA Ryder Cup captain learned the game of golf.

More than 300 golfers will take part in the tournament again this year.

Tournament facts ADMISSION is free for spectators TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE Action for the 93rd annual Resorters Golf Tournament will begin on Sunday, August 3, with an 8 a.m. practice round, followed by the 2 p.m. ProAm tournament On Monday, play begins early with the qualifying rounds for the Men’s Executive Division starting at 7 a.m., followed by the Men’s Senior, Men’s Masters, Women’s Regular and the Junior 13-15 Divisions Qualifying for the Men’s Regular Division will start at 7 a.m. Tuesday, followed by Junior 10-12 Division qualifying. Match play for all other divisions begins Tuesday as well.

Starting on Wednesday, all divisions will be competing in match play, which will continue through Saturday’s championship matches. The finals are slated to begin at noon with the Junior Division, followed by the Men’s Senior and Men’s Masters, Women’s Regular and Men’s Regular and Executive Divisions.

THE ALEXANDRIA GOLF CLUB is the oldest golf course in Alexandria, dating back to 1915.

THE SCENIC COURSE is an 18-hole facility that plays 6,504 yards from the back tees and has a course rating of 71.9 and slope of 132.

THE RESORTERS GOLF TOURNAMENT is the longest-running of the three largest outstate tournaments in Minnesota: the others are the Pine-to-Palm in Detroit Lakes and the Birchmont in Bemidji.

THE MOST FAMOUS HOLE is the 7th hole. Most commonly known as the Minnesota hole, it received a facelift this past year and now features five tee boxes, with the right and back side of the green tucked up against the shores of Lake Darling. The only thing about the hole that didn’t change was the shape, which is the shape of Minnesota.

The event was originally held at Legion Park in Alexandria, and its purpose was to offer the community a chance to see and purchase the fine art of local artists.

Celebrating 30 years

hreshing, gang plowing and sawmills – step back in time and experience how farming used to be. August9-10 marks the 30th annual Rose City Threshing and Heritage Festival, sponsored by the Spruce Hill Foundation. The Rose City Threshing and Heritage Festival has about 100 members, all dedicated to keeping farm history alive and each year about 3,000 people attend the Rose City Threshing and Heritage Festival.

role at the festival. People enjoy watching how farming was done before combines and modern farming technology.

Each year the festival has three steam engines, which are run from gas or steam depending on the model, and three threshing machines. Steam engines burn either wood or coal and travel at a speed of 2 miles per hour.

Old fashioned farming equipment isn’t the only attraction at the festival – kids will also find plenty to do. Live music, a flea market and craft show, children’s games, quilters, a general store and museum as well as a children’s barn are all part of the weekend fun.

If people get the munchies in between meals, Rose City French Fries will be on the grounds all weekend, along with 4-H ice cream to cool down on a hot day.

Knute Nelson home houses Alexandria history

I

nterested in local history? Visit the Douglas County Historical Society and take a guided tour of the famous Knute Nelson house, home of one of Alexandria’s most famous residents. Nelson, who served the people of Minnesota in public office for more than 50 years, was elected to the Minnesota Legislature, and served two terms in the U.S. Congress before becoming the state’s first foreign-born governor. He then served in the U.S. Senate for 28 years.

Nelson claimed a homestead in Alexandria in 1871 and built a small house on the property in 1874. As his political career progressed, he made

additions to the house, adding a formal living room and large bedroom in 1900 and a dining room and kitchen on the main floor and four more bedrooms on the second story in 1915.

Nelson died in 1923. His will stated that following the death of his daughter, Ida, the house was to be given to the Norwegian Lutheran Church as a “home for the aged.” It served in that capacity for 38 years.

In 1978, the house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. On October 1, 1987, the “Knute Nelson House” became the headquarters of the Douglas County Historical Society.

or more than 50 years, Theatre L’Homme Dieu (TLHD) has presented exceptional and entertaining live theater in the Alexandria lakes area.

TLHD partners with national and regional theaters to present five productions throughout the summer.

Next up at the theater is the Putnam County Spelling Bee. A very funny musical, this hilarious chronical of overachieving adolescents has been a hit across the country.

The show's Tony Award-winning creative team made the unlikeliest hit musical out of the unlikeliest of heroes: quirky, charming outsiders vying to stand out and fit in at the spelling bee. Contains some mature content and not recommended for children younger than the age of 10. By

That will be followed by Rancho Mirage, a bitingly funny black comedy about what happens when the fictions that hold our lives together are exposed. It's a sharp and surprising journey into the psyche of 2013 America - where affluence is perhaps our greatest mirage. Three couples find themselves at a dinner party where everyone finally decide to tell the truth.

Season ticket packages are now available for the 2014 season and can be purchased online at www.tlhd.org.

Cost for a season pass that includes one admission to each performance at any time is $85, and a flex pass, which includes five admissions to be used in any combination at any time is $100.

Daycare is also available for the Saturday matinees this year.

Birthplace of America

P

erhaps one of the most eye-catching “landmarks” in Alexandria is Big Ole – a 28-foot tall Viking statue that stands at the north end of Broadway.

Born in 1965, the Viking has become a much-respected resident in the lakes area.

The idea for the statue began in January of 1964 when North Star World’s Fair Corporation in Osseo began working on an addition to the Minnesota display for the New York World’s Fair. The display was to feature the historical Kensington Runestone in an animated scene titled “Minnesota, Birthplace of America.”

The new item to coincide with this display was the 28-foot, four-ton Viking statue.

Big Ole was completed by Gorden Displays of Minneapolis in April of 1965 and was transported to New York just in time for the World’s Fair.

Big Ole arrived at his home in Alexandria in front of the Runestone Museum in December of 1965. Now, almost 45 years later, he still stands strong.

KENSINGTON RUNESTONE It’s a controversy more than 100 years in the making: Did an immigrant Swedish farmer find a buried rock in 1898 that contained an ancient runic message carved by Viking explorers 100 years before Columbus landed in America? Or is the whole thing a hoax, perpetrated by the farmer or some other prankster?

A large replica of the Kensington Runestone is located at a small, wayside rest. Visitors can read the inscription and take a photo by the replica. The replica is located in a small park at the east end of Sixth Avenue in Alexandria.

FORT ALEXANDRIA Houses the Runestone Museum and is a nearly exact replica of the stockade built in 1862 and contains several original buildings, including an 1889 church, a log cabin built in the late 1860s and an 1885 schoolhouse.

Vacationer L akes Central Trail Something for everyone

T

he Central Lakes Trail is a paved, biking and walking trail that spans Douglas County from Osakis through Evansville and on to Fergus Falls in Otter Tail County.

The 55-mile-long trail, located on the old Burlington Northern rail line grade, connects the cities of Osakis, Nelson, Alexandria, Garfield, Brandon, Evansville and Melby in Douglas County.

The trail head and parking area in Alexandria

are located at the north end of Broadway in Big Ole Central Park. Other trail heads are available in the cities of Osakis, Garfield, Brandon and Evansville.

These trail heads include a parking area, portable restrooms and a trailside shelter. A bike shelter is also available along the trail about one and one-half miles east of Nelson.

The Central Lakes Trail also connects to the Lake Wobegon trail, which runs from Osakis through Sauk Centre to St. Joseph. Together, they make the longest paved bike trail in the state. The Central Lakes Trail (www.centrallakestrail.com) is used as a snowmobile trail in the winter; however, studs are not allowed.

SIGNAL WHEN PASSING Bells are great to use when farther back, especially when followed by a greeting, “Good morning, I’ll be passing on your left side” as you approach. Yelling “On yer left” while passing at full speed is not courteous or safe.

PASS ON THE LEFT Just like a roadway, always pass trail users on the left side and only when it is safe and clear to do so.

USE CAUTION AT CROSSINGS There are many types of trail crossings in Minnesota, and they can be very dangerous when not paying full attention. Watch for signage and yield to cross traffic. If there are multiple lanes or blind spots, use extra caution.

BE PREDICTABLE Trails can be great for training, but trails are for everyone. Never sacrifice your own or someone else’s safety for convenience. On busy weekends and evenings, fast training may be best left to the road. Signal your intentions and be sensitive to others.

USE LIGHTS AT NIGHT Some trails may be closed after dark. If open, a white headlight is required along with a rear red reflector. Red taillights are strongly recommended.

Dark trails can require brighter lights to see hazards.

DO NOT BLOCK THE TRAIL Group rides are fun, but don’t take up more than your half of the trail. This often means riding single file on the trails.

CLEAN UP LITTER Don’t leave trash on the trail and pick up items (especially glass or other potentially hazardous debris) to make the trail a better place for everyone.

Public Beaches LIFEGUARD-STAFFED LAKE L’HOMME DIEU BEACH Alexandria. Take Highway 29 north of Alexandria to the beach.

LAKE LATOKA BEACH Alexandria. Take County Road 82 west from Alexandria, turn south on County Road 90,then west on Latoka Beach Road.

NON-LIFEGUARD-STAFFED CITY PARK BEACH Alexandria. Lake Henry in the Alexandria City Park, one block west of County Road 42 (North Nokomis).

ROTARY BEACH Alexandria. Located off County Road 42 between lakes L’Homme Dieu and Carlos.

LAKE OSAKIS BEACH Osakis. Located on East Lake Street.

CHIPPEWA COUNTY PARK BEACH Brandon. Between lakes Little Chippewa and Devil’s off County Road 108 LAKE CARLOS STATE PARK Carlos. Located about seven miles north of Alexandria off State Highway 29 and County Road 38.
