ou’ve noticed it – the shadows lengthening and the days growing shorter. The days are still steamy, but there’s that little bit of coolness to the evenings. There’s a little nostalgia as cooler air brings back childhood memories – the excitement of returning to school tinged with a little sadness at the end of summer fun.

Summer is coming to an end, and with that end comes the final Vacationer issue for the summer.

But the change in seasons doesn’t bring an end to the fun here in the lakes area. Still ahead of us is fair time – 4-H exhibits, carnival rides and cotton Lori Mork candy – an event that has always, to me, been the VACATIONER kickoff to autumn.

EDITOR Autumn. I love when fall brings crisp leaves that crunch under my shoes as I walk along the trail at a state park or listen to the sound of geese as they gather for their southbound journey.

Autumn also brings apple picking – crisp, juicy apples that make your mouth water – and the bounty of wonderfully fresh produce that can be found at local farmers’ markets.

Maybe one of my favorite things about autumn are the bazaars and church suppers at this time of year. Great crafts, great food, great people – what’s not to love?

So browse through our final Vacationer and see what’s waiting for you. It’s a great time to be here and you won’t be disappointed that you’ve decided to spend these days with us.

T

hey’re colorful, intricate and exquisite – a kaleidoscope of designs and patterns all carefully stitched together into one-of-a-kind heirlooms.

And they’ll be on display September 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. as the 10th annual Quilts Along the Trail show in Osakis opens.

Quilts of all styles and sizes will be displayed for public viewing along a two-block area of the Central Lakes Trail in downtown Osakis as the exhibit showcases the talents and skills of central Minnesota quilters in many varieties and time periods from antique and vintage to traditional and contemporary.

This event also includes vendor booths featuring arts and crafts, entertainment, food and beverages and quilts and quilted items for sale.

Each year there is a special showcase that focuses on a specific theme

Family fun for everyone!

ummer may be winding down in the Alexandria lakes area, but not the fun as one of the most memorable events of the summer, the Douglas County Fair, gets set to open August 15.

Family friendly, the fair is filled with familiar attractions, entertainment, competitions, rides and, of course, food, and is truly the place to celebrate the kid in everyone.

This year, the fair

will offer entertainment on two stages: the 4-H stage and a new mini-stage directly across the street. There will also be new entertainment and several new food vendors for you to enjoy.

At the children’s tent, you can find clowns, Scandinavian Ring Dance training and other dance instruction, face painting and a flower arranging contest.

There’s also the Mutton Bustin’ rodeo, piggy races, demolition derby, tractor pull and, of course, WISSOTA racing.

Resorters under way at Alexandria Golf Club

A

ction in the 92nd annual Resorters Golf Tournament is under way at the Alexandria Golf Club and features many of the best amateur golfers from several states. Past tournaments have even had players from out of the country.

This year, the tournament celebrates its 92nd anniversary, and again, many of the best golfers in the state will be competing in the week-long event. The galleries will be filled with family and golf enthusiasts, all on hand to share the beautiful drives, the errant shots and the game-winning putts on a course filled with history and signature holes.

The tournament, which runs July 28 through August 3, will include not only some very serious competition that kicks off with the annual Pro-Am on opening Sunday, but some lively fun as well with a putting contest sure to coax a laugh from even the most serious player.

The Alexandria Golf Club and the Resorters Golf Tournament are nothing short of spectacular. Of the three largest golf competitions in out-state Minnesota – the Pine-to-Palm in Detroit Lakes and the Birchmont in Bemidji – the Resorters is the longest-running tournament.

The Alexandria Golf Club is the oldest golf course in Alexandria, dating back to 1915 and is an 18-hole facility that plays 6,504 yards from the back tees. It is the home of the Minnesota hole, or the 7th hole, which is shaped like the state of Minnesota.

Newspaper works to promote literacy in Alexandria area schools

ove to bowl? Then grab some friends and join the Echo Press newspaper in the fifth annual Strike Out Illiteracy Bowling Tournament on Tuesday, September 17 at 5 p.m. at Garden Center Lanes in Alexandria The tournament uses the proceeds to provide

newspapers and educational activities to area teachers for use in their classrooms and is part of the Echo Press’s Newspapers in Education program.

The tournament is presented by the Echo Press with the help of the community and area businesses.

Beautiful music in the heart of Alexandria

T

he Lakes Chamber Music Society of Alexandria has announced the 21st annual Festival of the Lakes chamber music series, celebrating the Benjamin Britten Centennial. Returning favorites include Tamás Strasser on viola, Sarah Lewis and Richard Bock on cello, Jill Olson Moser on violin and more.

Performing August 3, 11, 14 and 18, all events are at the United Methodist Church, 2210 6th Avenue East in Alexandria, and all will include works of Edward Benjamin Britten, an English composer, conductor and pianist. Britten was a central figure of the 20th century British classical music and his best known works in-

clude the opera Peter Grimes.

Some of the pieces to be featured are Canticle III – Still Falls the Rain, Lachrymae, Canticle II – Abraham and Isaac and Charm of Lullabies.

Tickets for the Festival of the Lakes go on sale in July and are available at Cherry Street Books at 5th and Broadway in downtown Alexandria, or by calling (320) 763-9400. Carpenter will be at the Cherry Street Books store on Saturday, August 10 from 1-2:30 p.m. Author of the novel Theory of Remainders and the collection of short fiction This Jealous Earth, Carpenter teaches French literature and critical theory at

Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota.

Theory of Remainders is a suspense set in the background of Normandy and explores the secret ties between love, trauma and language. A 52-year-old divorced psychiatrist is back in France (his former wife’s homeland) for a funeral, where he reunites with a trauma he has struggled for 15 years to forget.

Histor Society

Knute Nelson home houses Alexandria history

I

nterested in local history? Visit the Douglas County Historical Society and take a guided tour of the famous Knute Nelson house, home of one of Alexandria’s most famous residents. Nelson, who served the people of Minnesota in public office for more than 50 years, was elected to the Minnesota Legislature, and served two terms in the U.S. Congress before becoming the state’s first foreign-born governor. He then served in the U.S. Senate for 28 years.

Nelson claimed a homestead in Alexandria in 1871 and built a small house on the property in 1874. As his political career progressed, he made additions to the house, adding a formal living room and large bedroom in 1900 and a dining room and kitchen on the main floor and four more bedrooms on the second story in 1915.

Nelson died in 1923. His will stated that following the death of his daughter, Ida, the house was to be

or more than 50 years, Theatre L’Homme Dieu (TLHD) has presented exceptional and entertaining live theater in the Alexandria lakes area.

TLHD partners with national and regional theaters to present five productions

throughout the summer.

This season is winding down, but there is still plenty of exceptional entertainment to be had as Sunset Boulevard opens August 6 and Almost, Maine begins on August 13.

Winner of the 1995 Tony Award for Best Musical, Sunset Boulevard weaves a magnificent tale of faded glory and unfulfilled ambition. Silent movie star Norma Desmond longs for a return to the big screen, having been discarded by Tinseltown with the advent of ‘talkies.’ Her glamour has faded in all but her mind. When she meets struggling Hollywood screen-writer Joe Gillis in dramatic circumstances, their subsequent passionate and volatile relationship leads to an unforeseen and tragic conclusion.

On a cold, clear, moonless night in the middle of winter, all is not quite what it seems in the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine. As the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, Almost’s residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways.

Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken.

But the bruises heal, and the hearts mend – almost – in this delightful midwinter night’s dream.

L

ooking for an opportunity to get outside of the city limits and do some exploring? If so, you might want to give the Kensington Runestone Park a try.

Rich in history, the 193-acre Kensington Runestone Park is the home of the famed Kensington Runestone and was built around the pioneer farmstead of Olof Ohman and Karin Danielson Ohman, the site of the runestone’s discovery.

There have been some changes to the park this year in an effort to help better

tell the story of the runestone by making the land more closely resemble the area from 1898 to 1925.

Named with a Scandinavian flair Skraelling Veien, Nokke Veien, and Trollskogen Veien - the trails in the park wind through wooded areas to hidden mooring stones and a wooden bridge. Poles at the top of the hill fly the Minnesota, Norwegian and Swedish flags.

The Ohman farmhouse has been restored and is open to the public on weekends and holidays, or by special request Memorial Day through Labor Day. The barn on the property is used as a community center and displays a historical timeline.

So plan a little jaunt back in history and visit the Kensington Runestone Park.

P

erhaps one of the most eye-catching “landmarks” in Alexandria is Big Ole – a 28-foot tall Viking statue that stands at the north end of Broadway.

Born in 1965, the Viking has become a much-respected resident in the lakes area.

The idea for the statue began in January of 1964 when North Star World’s Fair Corporation in Osseo began working on an addition to the Minnesota display for the New York World’s Fair.

The display was to feature the historical Kensington Runestone in an animated scene titled “Minnesota, Birthplace of America.” The new item to coincide with this display was the 28-foot, four-ton Viking statue.

Big Ole was completed by Gorden Displays of Minneapolis in April of 1965 and was transported to New York just in time for the World’s Fair.

Big Ole arrived at his home in Alexandria in front of the Runestone Museum in December of 1965. Now, almost 45 years later, he still stands strong.

KENSINGTON RUNESTONE It’s a controversy more than 100 years in the making: Did an immigrant Swedish farmer find a buried rock in 1898 that contained an ancient runic message carved by Viking explorers 100 years before Columbus landed in America? Or is the whole thing a hoax, perpetrated by the farmer or some other prankster?

A large replica of the Kensington Runestone is located at a small, wayside rest. Visitors can read the inscription and take a photo by the replica. The replica is located in a small park at the east end of 6th Avenue in Alexandria.

Vacationer L akes Central Trail Something for everyone

T

he Central Lakes Trail is a paved, biking and walking trail that spans Douglas County from Osakis through Evansville and on to Fergus Falls in Otter Tail County.

The 55-mile-long trail, located on the old Burlington Northern rail line grade, connects the cities of Osakis, Nelson, Alexandria, Garfield, Brandon, Evansville and Melby in Douglas County.

The trail head and parking area in Alexandria

is located at the north end of Broadway in Big Ole Central Park. Other trail heads are available in the cities of Osakis, Garfield, Brandon and Evansville.

These trail heads include a parking area, portable restrooms and a trailside shelter. A bike shelter is also available along the trail about one and one-half miles east of Nelson.

The Central Lakes Trail also connects to the Lake Wobegon trail, which runs from Osakis through Sauk Centre to St. Joseph. Together, they make the longest paved bike trail in the state. The Central Lakes Trail (www.centrallakestrail.com) is used as a snowmobile trail in the winter; however, studs are not allowed.

Share the Trail BE COURTEOUS All trail users should be respectful of each other, regardless of mode of travel, speed or skill level.

RIGHT OF WAY Know the specific rules of your trail, which may be local, county, regional or state-controlled. In general, cyclists should yield to all other users.

SIGNAL WHEN PASSING Bells are great to use when farther back, especially when followed by a greeting, “Good morning, I’ll be passing on your left side” as you approach. Yelling “On yer left” while passing at full speed is not courteous or safe.

PASS ON THE LEFT Just like a roadway, always pass trail users on the left side and only when it is safe and clear to do so.

USE CAUTION AT CROSSINGS There are many types of trail crossings in Minnesota, and they can be very dangerous when not paying full attention. Watch for signage and yield to cross traffic. If there are multiple lanes or blind spots, use extra caution.

BE PREDICTABLE Trails can be great for training, but trails are for everyone. Never sacrifice your own or someone else’s safety for convenience. On busy weekends and evenings, fast training may be best left to the road. Signal your intentions and be sensitive to others.

USE LIGHTS AT NIGHT Some trails may be closed after dark. If open, a white headlight is required along with a rear red reflector. Red taillights are strongly recommended.

Dark trails can require brighter lights to see hazards.

DO NOT BLOCK THE TRAIL Group rides are fun, but don’t take up more than your half of the trail. This often means riding single file on the trails.

CLEAN UP LITTER Don’t leave trash on the trail and pick up items (especially glass or other potentially hazardous debris) to make the trail a better place for everyone.
