s the temperatures this summer heat up, so do activities in the lakes area. Anywhere you look, you’ll find something exciting at your fingertips, whether it be running, swimming, biking, or just exploring all the attractions that Alexandria has to offer.

If you’re a sports nut, one of the favorite activities in our area is baseball, and Alexandria has one of the premier events in the area – the Blue Anchors, featuring some of the top college prospects in the nation.

You can hit the golf courses, and of course, who can forget our many lakes? Cool, clear water. Perfect for boating, skiing, sailing, fishing, pontooning and swimming. What could be more perfect in the summer?

Lori Mork I love photography, and the possibilities for EDITOR snapping unique shots are unlimited. You can grab a camera and take in the annual Tour of Gardens, where the flowers and plant life will take your breath away. There are also our many parks as well as the Central Lakes Trail, with all the beauty of nature at your disposal.

You can enjoy many top-notch marching bands at the Vikingland Band Festival as schools and communities from around the state vye for titles.

Watch some high-flying fun at the Vikingland Speedway race track or even its smaller version of racing – the Runestone Raceway go-karts. Lots of fun packed into a small space, just waiting for you!

Exceptional entertainment

F

or more than 50 years, Theatre L’Homme Dieu (TLHD) has presented exceptional and entertaining live theater in the Alexandria lakes area.

TLHD partners with national and regional theaters to present five productions throughout the summer.

Opening the season will be a special performance

by The Fabulous Armadillos, one of Minnesota’s most popular tribute bands, on June 17.

The Fabulous Armadillos, an 8piece band of professional musicians that has been playing themed shows to sold-out audiences since 2006, make their Alexandria debut in the preseason concert event.

With a song list that spans from

rock to Motown, each theater show is a sit-down, multi-media, storytelling event perfect for a summer night.

That special performance will be followed by the Broadway hit, The Philadelphia Story, about Tracy Lord; a headstrong and spoiled daughter of the privileged. Tracy finds herself growing interested in a reporter covering her society wedding. Their moolnight swim is discovered and the love triangle eventually gets straightened out – but not without some good laughs!

Season ticket packages are now available for the 2014 season and can be purchased online at www.tlhd.org.

Cost for a season pass that includes one admission to each performance at any time is $85, and a flex pass, which includes five admissions to be used in any combination at any time is $100.

Daycare is also available for the Saturday matinees this year.

The box office opens one hour before showtime.

Area’s most breathtaking gardens on display

T

he annual Douglas County Tour of Gardens offers a breathtaking display of some of the area’s finest gardens. The 2014 event is set for Sunday, July 13 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sponsored by the Douglas County Master Gardeners and the University of Minnesota Extension Division, the event features six different area gardens each year.

The gardens may be viewed in any order in an open house format, and brochures with addresses, garden features and maps will be available at the Douglas County Extension Office, Runestone Museum and many retail locations in Douglas County.

Tickets are $5 and are available at any tour location the day of the event, or at the Douglas County Extension office in advance. Hosts will be available at each site to guide you and answer questions.

f you love a parade – and who doesn’t – make sure you find your way to Alexandria June 29 at 1:30 p.m. for the 30th annual Vikingland Band Festival’s Parade Marching Championship.

This event features the elite among marching bands from the Midwest and will be highlighted by the Minnesota Brass Drum &

Bugle Corps as the honor band. The 130-member group from St. Paul will perform as the honor unit in the parade and will also perform a free exhibition of its 2014 field show prior to the awards ceremony.

The Alexandria Alumni Band, which last appeared in the parade five years ago, will make its return and features graduates of the Alexandria band program.

And if you’re looking for something a little different, there’s Star Storm 2014, held at Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center on Friday, July 4, beginning at dusk. Choreographed fireworks are computer synchronized to music and broadcast on the radio.

There are also boat parades on local lakes, and the Viking Speedway will hold its Minnesota Modified Nationals races, highlighted by a spectacular fireworks display.

Alexandria’s celebration moves to June 28

A

lthough it won’t be held at its usual time, Alexandria’s “Awake the Lakes” summer celebration is still very much alive.

It promises to rev up the summer season during a warmer time of the year, June 28, and build off the big crowds that are coming into town for the Vikingland Band Festival.

The one-day event will feature something for everyone. The popular

Ribfest will be back, along with a live band, beer garden, fireworks, kidfriendly activities, a 5K run and more.

A local non-profit organization, aptly named Awake the Lakes, has taken over the event from the Alexandria Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce.

In addition to supplying a blast of summertime fun, the event will also raise money for local charitable causes.

Proceeds from this year’s event will go to Habitat for Humanity.

The board also hopes to raise money for scholarships.

A new logo was designed for the event, featuring a stylish pig sporting sunglasses and a chef’s hat embossed with the theme, “Smoke on the Water.”

As in the past, events will take place on Second Avenue by Big Ole Central Park.

The Ribfest competition will also stay pretty much the same, giving two divisions of cookers, professionals and amateurs, a chance to put their rib secrets to the test. A panel of judges will select the winners using a double-blind process.

The event will take place, rain or shine, under a large tent. A big trophy and bragging rights will go to the champions. Elden’s Fresh Foods is supplying the ribs.

There’s room for 20 rib-cooking teams.

The public, of course, will have the chance to feast on the ribs for $2 a bone. If ribs aren’t your thing, there will be other food vendors, serving a variety of tasty choices.

For this year’s entertainment, Awake the Lakes is bringing in Contention, a four-member band based out of Sauk Centre that plays country, rock and alternative music. It will get the crowd moving from 7 to 11 p.m.

‘High flying half mile’ track offers thrills, spills and speed

F

or 48 years, the Viking Speedway track has been home to stock car racing at its finest, and now, in its 49th season, the local oval has added a new division with the Pure Stocks, giving race fans six classes to enjoy.

Many will tell you that there’s nothing like being at the track to witness a race in person, and that the best racing action can be found at a dirt track.

Stock car racing got its start in Alexandria in 1953; the current Viking Speedway was founded in 1965.

Since that initial season, race fans have witnessed some of the top racers in the country compete on the big dirt oval.

The Viking Speedway is a half-mile semi-banked clay oval that races five WISSOTA sanctioned classes weekly – Late Models, Modifieds, Super Stocks, Midwest Modifieds and Street Stocks.

The regular season runs from late April through Labor Day with regular races held on Saturday nights.

Numerous specials are also held on other dates throughout the year, including the Central Minnesota Ice Breaker in April, the Minnesota Modified Nationals in early July and the Viking Fall Classic in October.

Runestone Raceway Big fun on the small oval

f you enjoy your racing on a smaller scale, then the Runestone Raceway is for you.

High flying go-kart action is located at the west end of the Douglas County Fairgrounds, when the Runestone Go Kart Association holds racing every Friday night at 7 p.m. Admission is free for spectators.

The Runestone Raceway began as a dirt track with no lights, racing on Sunday afternoons. It has since evolved into a clay oval, complete with lighting, an announcer and spectator stands. It’s not unusual to find the local Girl Scout

troops or the racers themselves singing the National Anthem.

A non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, Runestone Go-kart Racing, Inc. also offers up-close action for spectators with pit passes for just $6.

P

erhaps one of the most eye-catching “landmarks” in Alexandria is Big Ole – a 28-foot tall Viking statue that stands at the north end of Broadway.

Born in 1965, the Viking has become a much-respected resident in the lakes area.

The idea for the statue began in January of 1964 when North Star World’s Fair Corporation in Osseo began working on an addition to the Minnesota display for the New York World’s Fair. The display was to feature the historical Kensington Runestone in an animated scene titled “Minnesota, Birthplace of America.”

The new item to coincide with this display was the 28-foot, four-ton Viking statue.

Big Ole was completed by Gorden Displays of Minneapolis in April of 1965 and was transported to New York just in time for the World’s Fair.

Big Ole arrived at his home in Alexandria in front of the Runestone Museum in December of 1965. Now, almost 45 years later, he still stands strong.

KENSINGTON RUNESTONE It’s a controversy more than 100 years in the making: Did an immigrant Swedish farmer find a buried rock in 1898 that contained an ancient runic message carved by Viking explorers 100 years before Columbus landed in America? Or is the whole thing a hoax, perpetrated by the farmer or some other prankster?

A large replica of the Kensington Runestone is located at a small, wayside rest. Visitors can read the inscription and take a photo by the replica. The replica is located in a small park at the east end of 6th Avenue in Alexandria.

The Osakis Lions are in their 34th year of hosting the event

F

or 33 years, the Osakis Lions have been hosting their annual walleye fishing tournament on Lake Osakis. In its 34th year, the tournament will be held on June 14-15 over Father’s Day weekend.

The tournament features two-person teams and anyone is welcome to register by midnight June 13. The field is limited to the first 100 teams on a first come, first served basis. Entry forms can be found at various bait shops in the Osakis and Alexandria areas.

There is a prize for the largest walleye that will be based on the number of teams entered, as well as for the top 15 teams with the most weight over the two-day tournament; a total that could reach $8,000 for first prize. The largest northern will also win a $100 prize.

The Osakis Lions Club uses this as one of its major money makers for the year, and also brings in revenue for the area hotels, restaurants and bait shops.

Fish are caught and released back into Lake Osakis. Those that don’t survive are donated to Galeon Senior Living Center for a fish fry for residents.

Last year’s tournament saw a total 436 walleyes caught for more than 1,010 pounds of fish.

Fish that do not survive the catch and release tournament are cleaned and donated to the Galeon Senior Care Center in Osakis.

Vacationer L akes Central Trail Something for everyone

T

he Central Lakes Trail is a paved, biking and walking trail that spans Douglas County from Osakis through Evansville and on to Fergus Falls in Otter Tail County.

The 55-mile-long trail, located on the old Burlington Northern rail line grade, connects the cities of Osakis, Nelson, Alexandria, Garfield, Brandon, Evansville and Melby in Douglas County.

The trail head and parking area in Alexandria

are located at the north end of Broadway in Big Ole Central Park. Other trail heads are available in the cities of Osakis, Garfield, Brandon and Evansville.

These trail heads include a parking area, portable restrooms and a trailside shelter. A bike shelter is also available along the trail about one and one-half miles east of Nelson.

The Central Lakes Trail also connects to the Lake Wobegon trail, which runs from Osakis through Sauk Centre to St. Joseph. Together, they make the longest paved bike trail in the state. The Central Lakes Trail (www.centrallakestrail.com) is used as a snowmobile trail in the winter; however, studs are not allowed.

SIGNAL WHEN PASSING Bells are great to use when farther back, especially when followed by a greeting, “Good morning, I’ll be passing on your left side” as you approach. Yelling “On yer left” while passing at full speed is not courteous or safe.

PASS ON THE LEFT Just like a roadway, always pass trail users on the left side and only when it is safe and clear to do so.

USE CAUTION AT CROSSINGS There are many types of trail crossings in Minnesota, and they can be very dangerous when not paying full attention. Watch for signage and yield to cross traffic. If there are multiple lanes or blind spots, use extra caution.

BE PREDICTABLE Trails can be great for training, but trails are for everyone. Never sacrifice your own or someone else’s safety for convenience. On busy weekends and evenings, fast training may be best left to the road. Signal your intentions and be sensitive to others.

USE LIGHTS AT NIGHT Some trails may be closed after dark. If open, a white headlight is required along with a rear red reflector. Red taillights are strongly recommended.

Dark trails can require brighter lights to see hazards.

DO NOT BLOCK THE TRAIL Group rides are fun, but don’t take up more than your half of the trail. This often means riding single file on the trails.

CLEAN UP LITTER Don’t leave trash on the trail and pick up items (especially glass or other potentially hazardous debris) to make the trail a better place for everyone.

Douglas County offers several options for public beaches, both lifeguard staffed and non-lifeguard-staffed.

Cool and clean, bright and sparkling, the waters of the area lakes seem to call your name.

Public Beaches LIFEGUARD-STAFFED LAKE L’HOMME DIEU BEACH Alexandria. Take Highway 29 north of Alexandria to the beach.

LAKE LATOKA BEACH Alexandria. Take County Road 82 west from Alexandria, turn south on County Road 90,then west on Latoka Beach Road.

NON-LIFEGUARD-STAFFED CITY PARK BEACH Alexandria. Lake Henry in the Alexandria City Park, one block west of County Road 42 (North Nokomis).

ROTARY BEACH Alexandria. Located off County Road 42 between lakes L’Homme Dieu and Carlos.

LAKE OSAKIS BEACH Osakis. Located on East Lake Street.
