hat’s more fun than summer in Minnesota? Having lived here most of my life, I can honestly say I can’t think of anything. It’s a time to head outside as the sun warms your face, the lakes call your name and the fireflies dance for your pleasure. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else, and here at the Vacationer, we want to share all this with you.

July and August are the pinnacle months of the summer season, and this issue will get you in touch with what’s in store. The lakes area is filled with celebrations as nearly every small community has special days set aside to celebrate its history.

The lakes here are spectacular! Boating, fishing and water-skiing opportunities are everywhere, but my favorite is a quiet pontoon ride Lori Mork and a long evening on the dock watching the sun EDITOR go down. It relaxes my mind and settles my soul.

If you love to golf – this is the place! We have nine golf courses waiting for you to tee off. But if you’d rather watch, we will be celebrating the 94th annual Resorters Golf Tournament at the Alexandria Golf Club August 5-8. You may even be able to catch a glimpse of professional golfer Tom Lehman, a native of Alexandria, who is often on the sidelines of the tournament.

You’ll find talented artists from around the state displaying their works at Art in the Park this July. I never fail to find something wonderful to bring home when browsing through the booths.

I know as you look through the Vacationer, you’ll find something that sparks your interest here in the Alexandria area. Every day is filled with possibilites.

eople from all over the Upper Midwest will display their boats at Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center during the Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum’s Chain of Lakes Classic Boat Show on Saturday, July 11.

Old canoes, fishing boats, outboards or inboards, family or prize-winning showboats are welcome as part of the competition. Land displays are also available and classic boats

A large variety of watercraft will be shown on land and in the water at this year’s event, so come for the memories and the fun. This show is a celebration of summer and a great showcase of Alexandria’s lake history.

Admission to the boat show is free to the public and Arrowwood will have lunch and refreshments available on the grounds.

Events scheduled for Saturday, July 11 include a land and water showing from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and awards at 2:30 p.m. There may also be a boat drive-by at 3 p.m., weather permitting.

The fun starts to fire up at 8 a.m. on July 11 when registration begins downtown and cars start rolling into Osakis.

The show-n-shine event from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. is held on Central and Main, and offers a chance for car lovers to see glistening chrome, hear revving engines and talk to car owners about their classic cars.

elebrating its 50th anniversary in 2015, the Viking Speedway track has been home to stock car racing at its finest, featuring six classes of racing – five WISSOTA sanctioned classes with the Late Models, Modifieds, Super Stocks, Midwest Modifieds and Street Stocks, and one unsactioned with the Pure Stocks.

Highlighting the summer racing season again this year will be the Minnesota Modified Nationals July 3-5, and the FYE Motorsports-promoted event is celebrating its 11th season by providing a WISSOTArecord $11,000 to the winner

Runestone Raceway Big fun on the small oval

I

f you enjoy your racing on a smaller scale, then the Runestone Raceway is for you. High flying go-kart action is located at the west end of the Douglas County Fairgrounds, where the Runestone Go Kart Association holds racing every Friday night at 7 p.m.

Admission is free for spectators.

The Runestone Raceway began as a dirt track with no lights, racing on Sunday afternoons.

It has since evolved into a clay oval, complete with lighting, an announcer and spectator stands. It’s not unusual to find the

local Girl Scout troops or the racers themselves singing the National Anthem.

A nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, Runestone Go-kart Racing, Inc. also offers up-close action for spectators with pit passes for just $6.

The racing program at the fairgrounds provides 14 different categories for young racers – Caged: Rookie Flat, Rookie Animal, Junior I Flat, Junior I Animal, Sportsman Flat, Sportsman Animal, Junior II Flat, Junior II Animal, Cageless: Junior I Flat, Junior I Animal, Junior II Flat, Junior II Animal, Stock Medium Flat and Animal Medium.

State TrapShoot The state’s best at the Alexandria Shooting Park

any of the best sharpshooters in Minnesota will be sighting in on Alexandria as the Alexandria Shooting Park hosts the 105th annual Minnesota State Trapshooting Tournament July 6-12.

A total of 1,400 registered targets and 19 traps are part of the state tournament, and, along with Minnesota residents, out-ofstate and novice shooters are welcome.

n the tradition it has followed for 93 years, the 94th Resorters Golf Tournament will provide some of the most exciting and memorable golf action available.

But more than that, it is a family affair, providing traditions that connect the past to the present, bringing new generations of families to the lakes area.

enthusiasts, all on hand to share the beautiful drives, the errant shots and the game-winning putts on a course filled with history and signature holes.

The tournament will include not only some very serious competition that kicks off with the annual Pro-Am on opening Sunday, but some lively fun as well with a putting contest and the ever-quirky derby, sure to coax a laugh from even the most serious player.

Many high profile athletes have competed in this tourney, most notably professional golfer and Alexandria graduate Tom Lehman, who won the Resorters title in 1980. The Alexandria Golf Club is the place that the PGA Tour professional and USA Ryder Cup captain learned the game of golf.

Tournament facts ADMISSION is free for spectators TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE Action for the 94th annual Resorters Golf Tournament will begin on Sunday, August 2, followed by the Pro-Am tournament.

On Monday, play begins early with the qualifying rounds for the Men’s Executive Division, followed by the Men’s Senior, Men’s Masters, Women’s Regular and the Junior 13-15 Divisions.

Qualifying for the Men’s Regular Division will start Tuesday, followed by Junior 10-12 Division qualifying. Match play for all other divisions begins Tuesday as well.

Starting on Wednesday, all divisions will be competing in match play, which will continue through Saturday’s championship matches. The finals are slated to begin at noon with the Junior Division, followed by the Men’s Senior and Men’s Masters, Women’s Regular and Men’s Regular and Executive Divisions.

Step back in time

T

hreshing, a blacksmith shop and sawmills – step back in time and experience how farming used to be. August 79 marks the 31st annual Rose City Threshing and Heritage Festival, sponsored by the Spruce Hill Foundation. The Rose City Threshing and Heritage Festival has about 100 members, all dedicated to keeping farm history alive and each year about 3,000 people attend the Rose City Threshing and Heritage Festival.

Threshing machines and steam engines play the largest role at the festival. People

can watch how farming was done before combines and modern farming technology.

Each year, the festival has three steam engines, which are run from gas or steam depending on the model, and three threshing machines. Steam engines burn either wood or coal and travel at a speed of 2 miles per hour.

Old fashioned farming equipment isn’t the only attraction at the festival – kids of all ages will also find plenty to do.

Live music, a flea market and craft show, children’s games, quilters, a general store and museum as well as a children’s barn are all part of the weekend fun.

Exceptional entertainment

F

or more than 50 years, Theatre L’Homme Dieu (TLHD) has presented exceptional and entertaining live theater in the Alexandria lakes area. TLHD partners with national and regional theaters to present five productions throughout the summer.

Beginning July 7 and running through July 12 will be Next to Normal, a Pulitzer and Tony award-winning rock opera telling the story of a mother battling bipolar disorder and the effect it has on her family.

Unflinchingly honest, yet still hopeful, Next to Normal is an emotional journey backed by the strength of a heavy metal concert. It is produced by Yellow Tree Theatre of Osseo and directed by Ben McGovern.

Then make sure to mark your calendars for July 14-19 when 2 Sugars,

Room for Cream, an honest and silly look at why we drink coffee, will be on stage. It is a series of scenes and original music performed by two beloved Twin Cities performers, Shanan Custer and Carolyn Pool. Sit back and enjoy what audiences called “well-crafted, sweet, sassy and totally delicious!”

It is written, produced, directed, and performed by Shanan Custer and Carolyn Pool.

In August, Ring of Fire will bring to life the music of Johnny Cash. The entire cast of eight – men and women – play the legend that is Johnny Cash, covering 32 songs that include country, rock, folk, gospel, and blues.

It is produced by Troupe America and Plymouth Playhouse and directed

by Curt Wollan, producing artistic director of Troupe America.

The premier art exhibit enters its 40th year at City Park

Y

ou’ll be amazed when you visit the 40th annual Art in the Park as exhibitors from around the Midwest display their talents at the Alexandria City Park July 25-26.

Art in the Park has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1976.

The fine arts and crafts show, promoted as “Central Minnesota’s finest outdoor craft festival,” has grown from about 15 vendors to about 150.

The Alexandria Area Arts Association (AAAA) event draws crowds and exhibitors from throughout the state of Minnesota as well as from several other states.

Art in the Park also includes a variety of ethnic foods and entertainment.

The event was originally held at Legion Park in Alexandria, and its purpose was to offer the community a chance to see and purchase the fine art of local artists.

The show still lives up to its original high standard of fine art and highquality crafts. All art exhibited is handmade by the artists.

Alexandria Festival of the Lakes The Lakes Chamber Music Society of Alexandria has announced its annual Festival of the Lakes chamber music series and will celebrate with a French Music Festival and will feature returning favorites William Eddins on piano, Adam Kuenzel on flute, Colin McGuire on violin and more.

Performing August 1, 2, 7, 9 and 16, all events are at the United Methodist Church, 2210 Sixth Avenue East in Alexandria and all will include the works of many French composers such as Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Camille Saint-Saëns and Gabriel Fauré.

T

he Central Lakes Trail is a paved, biking and walking trail that spans Douglas County from Osakis through Evansville and on to Fergus Falls in Otter Tail County.

The 55-mile-long trail, located on the old Burlington Northern rail line grade, connects the cities of Osakis, Nelson, Alexandria, Garfield, Brandon, Evansville and Melby in Douglas County.

The trail head and parking area in Alexandria are located at the north end of Broadway in Big Ole Central Park. Other trail heads are available

in the cities of Osakis, Garfield, Brandon and Evansville. These trail heads include a parking area, portable restrooms and a trailside shelter. A bike shelter is also available along the trail about one and one-half miles east of Nelson.

The Central Lakes Trail also connects to the Lake Wobegon trail, which runs from Osakis through Sauk Centre to St. Joseph. Together, they make the longest paved bike trail in the state. The Central Lakes Trail (www.centrallakestrail.com) is used as a snowmobile trail in the winter; however, studs are not allowed.

Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum is a look back at lake history

M

uch of Minnesota’s history is inspired by the many beautiful lakes throughout our state, and the Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum is dedicated to bringing that history to the public.

From handcrafted wooden boats to grand hotels and fishing clubs, the museum brings to life traditions that reach back nearly a century and a half.

Displaying existing watercraft collections and

documenting lake life experiences and traditions, the museum is filled with artifacts and memorabilia.

These diverse exhibits, as well as the Maritime Gardens, are all part of the Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of antique and classic watercraft, resort memorabilia and sporting equipment used on the Minnesota lakes.

A free summer concert will be held in the Maritime Gardens Friday, August 7 at 7 p.m.

The museum is located in downtown Alexandria at 205 Third Avenue West, near the Alexandria Fire Department. The museum is open MondaySaturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday from 12-5 p.m. Contact the museum at (320) 759-1114 or through its website www.mnlakesmaritime.org.

RESORTS AND GRAND HOTELS Family time at one of Minnesota’s numerous resorts is a memory for many people of their time at the lake. This exhibit features the grand hotels in photographs and memorabilia.

SUMMER PORCH This screened-in porch, part of the hotels and resorts exhibit, includes the history of the Minnesouri Club on Lake Miltona, a private collection of cottages with residents from Missouri.

MINNESOTA BOAT BUILDERS In the Alexandria Boat Works exhibit is an interactive presentation of the wood boat building industry in Minnesota during the 1900s as well as designs, tools and notes on how these boats were constructed.

GAR WOOD EXHIBIT International boat racer Garfield “Gar” Wood’s career began as a boy on Lake Osakis, and this exhibit includes movie-tone news reels that tell the story of his “Miss America” boat setting speed records and winning the Harmsworth Trophy six consecutive years.

LARSON BOAT WORKS Started in the garage of Paul Larson in Little Falls, Larson Boat Works has become a mainstay in the boating industry. The colorful graphics in this exhibit take you through the development of his company. Boats from the company are also on display, including the “Falls Flyer.”

FISHING GALLERY Along with vintage fishing gear and memorabilia, the gallery highlights several legendary fishing guides from the lakes area.

HISTORY OF CHRIS-CRAFT The story of the Chris-Craft brand is told from Chris Smith’s early days building racing boats to the formation of the company in 1922 and its evolution into America’s premier wood boat builder.

erhaps one of the most eye-catching “landmarks” in Alexandria is Big Ole – a 28-foot tall Viking statue that stands at the north end of Broadway.

Born in 1965, the Viking has become a much-respected resident in the lakes area.

The idea for the statue began in January of 1964 when North Star World’s Fair Corporation in Osseo began working on an addition to the Minnesota display for the New York World’s Fair. The display was to feature the historical Kensington Runestone in an animated scene titled “Minnesota, Birthplace of America.” The new item to coincide with this display was the 28-foot, four-ton Viking statue.

Big Ole was completed by Gorden Displays of Minneapolis in April of 1965 and was transported to New York just in time for the World’s Fair.

Big Ole arrived at his home in Alexandria in front of the Runestone Museum in December of 1965. Now, almost 50 years later, he still stands strong.

KENSINGTON RUNESTONE It’s a controversy more than 100 years in the making: Did an immigrant Swedish farmer find a buried rock in 1898 that contained an ancient runic message carved by Viking explorers 100 years before Columbus landed in America? Or is the whole thing a hoax, perpetrated by the farmer or some other prankster?

A large replica of the Kensington Runestone is located at a small, wayside rest. Visitors can read the inscription and take a photo by the replica. The replica is located in a small park at the east end of Sixth Avenue in Alexandria.
