ou’ve noticed it – the shadows lengthening and the days growing shorter. The days are still steamy, but there’s that little bit of coolness to the evenings. There’s a little nostalgia as cooler air brings back childhood memories – the excitement of returning to school tinged with a little sadness at the end of summer fun. Summer is coming to an end, and with that end comes the final Vacationer issue for the summer.

But the change in seasons doesn’t bring an end to the fun here in the lakes area. Still ahead of us is fair time – 4-H exhibits, carnival rides and cotton candy – an event that has always, to me, been the kickoff to autumn.

Autumn. I love when fall brings crisp leaves that crunch under my shoes as I walk along the trail at a state park or listen to the sound of Lori Mork geese as they gather for their southbound jourEDITOR ney.

Autumn also brings apple picking – crisp, juicy apples that make your mouth water – and the bounty of wonderfully fresh produce that can be found at local farmers’ markets.

Maybe one of my favorite things about autumn are the bazaars and church suppers at this time of year. Great crafts, great food, great people – what’s not to love?

Beautiful music in Alexandria

T

he Lakes Chamber Music Society of Alexandria has announced the 23rd annual Festival of the Lakes chamber music series, and will celebrate with a French Festival and will feature favorites Colin McGuire on violin, Ellen Dinwiddie Smith on horn, John Snow on oboe and many more.

Performing August 1, 2, 7, 9 and 16, all events are at the United Methodist Church, 2210 Sixth Avenue East in Alexandria, and all will include the works of many French composers such as Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel and Charles-Camille Saint-Saëns.

Some of the pieces to be featured include Flute Sonata, Violin Sonata in A Major, Trois chansons de Bilitis and Nonetto in E-flat Major.

Tickets for the Festival of the Lakes went on sale on July 8 and are available at Cherry Street Books at Fifth and Broadway in downtown Alexandria, or by calling (320) 763-9400. You can also email tickets@rea-alp.com. Please know that the main office is not staffed full time, but that phone messages and emails are checked every day.

Cost is $15 for adults and students will be admitted free at the door on concert evenings only. All seats are general admission.

Exceptional entertainment

F

or more than 50 years, Theatre L’Homme Dieu (TLHD) has presented exceptional and entertaining live theater in the Alexandria lakes area. TLHD partners with national and regional theaters to present five productions throughout the summer.

The theater’s final performance of the season will be Little Shop of Horrors, running August 4-9.

Directed by Amanda White Thietje and produced by Daleko Arts of New Prague, the performance is based on a 1960 low-budget film.

It’s a comedy horror pop musical that tells the story of nerdy Seymour Krelborn, who happens upon an unusual (and, as it turns out, lucrative) plant. The plant seems to have a craving for blood and soon begins to sing for his supper.

As Seymour’s aspirations for fame and fortune grow, so does the flytrap, until mayhem and murder ensue.

The music in this winner of four New York awards for Best Musical is in the style of early 1960’s doo-wop, rock and roll, and Motown.

The box office opens one hour before showtime.

It’s a stompin’ good time!

I

t’s fun. It’s messy. It’s a stompin’ good time. Whether you’re a stomper or just cheering the teams on, there’s a weekend of fun waiting for you at Carlos Creek Winery in Alexandria when its 15th annual Grape Stomp and Fall Festival gets going.

Resorters under way at Alexandria Golf Club

A

ction in the 94th annual Resorters Golf Tournament is under way at the Alexandria Golf Club and features many of the best amateur golfers from several states.

Past tournaments have even included players from other countries.

This year, the tournament celebrates its 94th anniversary, and again, many of the best golfers in the state will be competing in the week-long event. The galleries will be filled with family and golf enthusiasts, all on hand to share the beautiful drives, the errant shots and the game-winning putts on a course filled with history and signature holes.

The tournament, which runs August 2 through August 8, will include not only some very serious competition that kicks off with the annual Pro-Am on opening Sunday, but some lively fun as well with a putting contest sure to coax a laugh from even the most serious player.

The Alexandria Golf Club and the Resorters Golf Tournament are nothing short of spectacular. Of the three largest golf competitions in out-state Minnesota – the Pine-to-Palm in Detroit Lakes and the Birchmont in Bemidji – the Resorters is the longest-running tournament.

The Alexandria Golf Club is the oldest golf course in Alexandria, dating back to 1915 and is an 18-hole facility that plays 6,504 yards from the back tees. It is the home of the Minnesota hole, or the 7th hole, which is shaped like the state of Minnesota.

hey’re colorful, intricate and exquisite – a kaleidoscope of designs and patterns all carefully stitched together into one-of-a-kind heirlooms.

And they’ll be on display September 6 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. as the 12th annual Quilts Along the Trail show in Osakis opens.

Quilts of all styles and sizes will be displayed for public viewing along a two-block area of the Central Lakes Trail in downtown Osakis as the exhibit showcases the talents and skills of central Minnesota quilters in many varieties and time periods from antique and vintage to traditional and contemporary.

A special display will be the Quilts of Valor – quilts made by a group of women for military men and women.

This event also includes vendor booths featuring arts and crafts, entertainment, food and beverages and quilts and quilted items for sale.

I

t’s big, it’s bold, it’s brash, it’s the 12th annual Viking Fall Classic, one of the last WISSOTA National points races of 2015 and it will be in Alexandria Thursday-Saturday, October 8-10. If you love dirt racing action, this is for you.

Last year’s Fall Classic, which should have been the 11th annual event, had to be canceled due to rain and below-average temperatures.

The WISSOTA Late Models will lead the chase for the big prize, while the Modifieds and the Super Stocks will race for their own purses. Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds and Mod Fours will be in action as well.

Practices are usually held from 6-9 p.m. on Thursday, with the pits and grandstand opening at 3 p.m. on Friday and noon on Saturday. Racing begins at 6 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday.

All heat races will be run on Friday, with all B-Main and Features on Saturday.

Family fun for everyone!

ummer may be winding down in the Alexandria lakes area, but not the fun as one of the most memorable events of the summer, the Douglas County Fair, gets set to open August 20.

Family friendly, the fair is filled with familiar attractions, entertainment, competitions, rides and, of course, food, and is truly the place to celebrate the kid in everyone.

This year, the fair will offer entertainment on two stages, as well as various other entertainment venues on the fairgrounds.

You can check out the Sheriff’s K-9 demonstration, the old schoolhouse and the minnow races that will be held at the DNR building.

There’s the demolition derby, tractor pull, Motokazzi, rodeo action and the first Douglas County’s Got Talent competition.

Also new this year will be the first Douglas County Fair Princess pageant.

Vacationer esTrail k a L l a r t Cen Something for everyone

T

he Central Lakes Trail is a paved, biking and walking trail that spans Douglas County from Osakis through Evansville and on to Fergus Falls in Otter Tail County.

The 55-mile-long trail, located on the old Burlington Northern rail line grade, connects the cities of Osakis, Nelson, Alexandria, Garfield, Brandon, Evansville and Melby in Douglas County.

The trail head and parking area in Alexandria are located at the north end of Broadway in Big Ole Central Park. Other trail heads are available

in the cities of Osakis, Garfield, Brandon and Evansville. These trail heads include a parking area, portable restrooms and a trailside shelter. A bike shelter is also available along the trail about one and one-half miles east of Nelson.

The Central Lakes Trail also connects to the Lake Wobegon trail, which runs from Osakis through Sauk Centre to St. Joseph. Together, they make the longest paved bike trail in the state. The Central Lakes Trail (www.centrallakestrail.com) is used as a snowmobile trail in the winter; however, studs are not allowed.

Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum is a look back at lake history

M

uch of Minnesota’s history is inspired by the many beautiful lakes throughout our state, and the Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum is dedicated to bringing that history to the public.

From handcrafted wooden boats to grand hotels and fishing clubs, the museum brings to life traditions that reach back nearly a century and a half.

Displaying existing watercraft collections and

documenting lake life experiences and traditions, the museum is filled with artifacts and memorabilia.

These diverse exhibits, as well as the Maritime Gardens, are all part of the Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of antique and classic watercraft, resort memorabilia and sporting equipment used on the Minnesota lakes.

A free summer concert will be held in the Maritime Gardens Friday, August 7 at 7 p.m.

The museum is located in downtown Alexandria at 205 Third Avenue West, near the Alexandria Fire Department. The museum is open MondaySaturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday from 12-5 p.m. Contact the museum at (320) 759-1114 or through its website www.mnlakesmaritime.org.

RESORTS AND GRAND HOTELS Family time at one of Minnesota’s numerous resorts is a memory for many people of their time at the lake. This exhibit features the grand hotels in photographs and memorabilia.

SUMMER PORCH This screened-in porch, part of the hotels and resorts exhibit, includes the history of the Minnesouri Club on Lake Miltona, a private collection of cottages with residents from Missouri.

MINNESOTA BOAT BUILDERS In the Alexandria Boat Works exhibit is an interactive presentation of the wood boat building industry in Minnesota during the 1900s as well as designs, tools and notes on how these boats were constructed.

GAR WOOD EXHIBIT International boat racer Garfield “Gar” Wood’s career began as a boy on Lake Osakis, and this exhibit includes movie-tone news reels that tell the story of his “Miss America” boat setting speed records and winning the Harmsworth Trophy six consecutive years.

LARSON BOAT WORKS Started in the garage of Paul Larson in Little Falls, Larson Boat Works has become a mainstay in the boating industry. The colorful graphics in this exhibit take you through the development of his company. Boats from the company are also on display, including the “Falls Flyer.”

FISHING GALLERY Along with vintage fishing gear and memorabilia, the gallery highlights several legendary fishing guides from the lakes area.

HISTORY OF CHRIS-CRAFT The story of the Chris-Craft brand is told from Chris Smith’s early days building racing boats to the formation of the company in 1922 and its evolution into America’s premier wood boat builder.

erhaps one of the most eyecatching “landmarks” in Alexandria is Big Ole – a 28foot tall Viking statue that stands at the north end of Broadway.

Born in 1965, the Viking has become a much-respected resident in the lakes area.

The idea for the statue began in January of 1964 when North Star World’s Fair Corporation in Osseo began working on an addition to the Minnesota display for the New York World’s Fair. The display was to feature the historical Kensington Runestone in an animated scene titled “Minnesota, Birthplace of America.” The new item to coincide with this display was the 28-foot, four-ton Viking statue.

Big Ole was completed by Gorden Displays of Minneapolis in April of

1965 and was transported to New York just in time for the World’s Fair.

Big Ole arrived at his home in Alexandria in front of the Runestone Museum in December of 1965. Now, almost 50 years later, he still stands strong.

KENSINGTON RUNESTONE It’s a controversy more than 100 years in the making: Did an immigrant Swedish farmer find a buried rock in 1898 that contained an ancient runic message carved by Viking explorers 100 years before Columbus landed in America? Or is the whole thing a hoax, perpetrated by the farmer or some other prankster?

A large replica of the Kensington Runestone is located at a small, wayside rest. Visitors can read the inscription and take a photo by the replica.

The replica is located in a small park at the east end of Sixth Avenue in Alexandria.

Along with the Runestone, the museum holds exhibits on Native Americans, early immigrant history, the history of Alexandria, a memorial/gun exhibit, a Minnesota wildlife exhibit, and a hands-on children’s area.

FORT ALEXANDRIA Houses the Runestone Museum and is a nearly exact replica of the stockade built in 1862 and contains several original buildings, including an 1889 church, a log cabin built in the late 1860s and an 1885 schoolhouse.
