hat’s more fun than summer in Minnesota? Having lived here most of my life, I can honestly say I can’t think of anything. It’s a time to head outside as the sun warms your face, the lakes call your name and the fireflies dance for your pleasure. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else, and here at the Vacationer, we want to share all this with you.

July and August are the pinnacle months of the summer season, and this issue will get you in touch with what’s in store. The lakes area is filled with celebrations as nearly every small community has special days set aside to celebrate its history.

The lakes here are spectacular! Boating, fishing and water-skiing opportunities are everywhere, but my favorite is a quiet kayak ride and a long evening on the dock watching the sun go down. It relaxes my mind and settles my soul.

If you love to golf – this is the place! We have nine golf courses waiting for you to tee off. But Lori Mork if you’d rather watch, we will be celebrating the EDITOR 95th annual Resorters Golf Tournament at the Alexandria Golf Club in August. You may even be able to catch a glimpse of professional golfer Tom Lehman, a native of Alexandria, who is often on the sidelines of the tournament.

You’ll find talented artists from around the state displaying their works at Art in the Park this July. I never fail to find something wonderful to bring home when browsing through the booths.

I know as you look through the Vacationer, you’ll find something that sparks your interest here in the Alexandria area. Every day is filled with possibilites.

Exhibiting fine arts and crafts

Y

ou’ll be amazed when you visit the 41st annual Art in the Park as exhibitors from around the Midwest display their talents at the Alexandria City Park July 30-31.

Art in the Park has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1976. The fine arts and crafts show, promoted as “Central Minnesota’s finest outdoor craft festival,” has grown from about 15 vendors to about 150.

The Alexandria Area Arts Association (AAAA) event draws crowds and exhibitors from throughout the state of Minnesota as well as from several other states.

Art in the Park also includes a variety of ethnic foods and entertainment.

The event was originally held at Legion Park in Alexandria, and its purpose was to offer the community a chance to see and purchase the fine art of local artists.

The show still lives up to its original high standard of fine art and high-quality crafts. All art exhibited is handmade by the artists.

The event is now held at Alexandria City Park, nestled along the tree-shaded shores of Lake Agnes and Lake Henry, just off Highway 29 North.

Proceeds from Art in the Park are used to maintain and improve the Alexandria Area Arts Association

ringing classical chamber music to the Alexandria area since 1993, the Alexandria Festival of the Lakes offers audiences a chance to hear professional musicians from Minnesota and throughout the United States, as well as Canada and Europe.

This year’s music will feature several festival premieres including Violin Sonata #2 in A Major, op. 100 by Johannes Brahms, Piano Quintet in C Minor by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Piano Trio in B-flat Major, K. 502 by Wolfgang Amadéus Mozart and Sonata in A minor for flute unaccompanied, BWV.1013 by Johann Sebastian Bach.

Several festival-favorite performers return as well in Tamás

Strasser on viola, Adam Kuenzel on flute, Colin McGuire on violin and more when the festival takes place August 5-13.

Tickets for the Festival of the Lakes go on sale in July and are available at Cherry Street Books at Fifth and Broadway in downtown Alexandria, or by calling (320) 763-9400. You can also email tickets@rea-alp.com.

Please know that the main office is not staffed full time, but that phone messages and emails are checked every day.

Cost is $15 for adults and students will be admitted free at the door on concert evenings only. All seats are general admission.

WWII history in a one-man show

T

he true story of World War II American officer Matt Konop who liberates the Czech village of his grandparents, “Accidental Hero” is brought to life by his grandson, Patrick Dewane, on Saturday, July 16 at the Performing Arts Center at Alexandria Area High School.

Dewane’s grandfather refused to talk about his service during the war, but after his death, a wealth of history was found in his basement, including typewritten accounts of events, photos and rare film footage.

brings this information to life as he takes on dozens of different roles, recounting his grandfather’s journey from Omaha Beach and the Battle of the Bulge to the liberation of Czechoslovakia and the end of World War II. Because of Konop’s Czech heritage and fluency in the language, he was assigned to command the Advance Party during the liberation of Czechoslovakia, and was hailed by the Czech people as a hero.

Twenty years after his death, his writings were discovered in a family basement, and the 90-minute oneman show was born.

In May of 2015, a bronze plaque honoring Konop was dedicated on the main square of Domazlice, Czech Republic, just a few yards away from a black granite plaque commemorating the U.S. Army’s liberation of Domazlice.

Viking Speedway in 51st year

C

elebrating its 50th anniversary in 2015, the Viking Speedway track has been home to stock car racing at its finest, featuring six classes of racing – five WISSOTA sanctioned classes with the Late Models, Modifieds, Super Stocks, Midwest Modifieds and Street Stocks, and the ever growing unsanctioned VIking Pure Stocks class.

Highlighting July’s racing will be the fourth annual Mike Commerford Memo-

rial Special, featuring WISSOTA Mod Fours on July 23, while the big events in August will be the Hall of Fame night on August 6, honoring Ron Krog, the voice of the Viking Speedway for more than 20 years. There will also be the second annual Fallen Lineman Memorial Modified Special on August 13.

The Viking Speedway is located at the Douglas County Fairgrounds in Alexandria, approximately 3/4 mile west of State Highway 29 on County Road 82.

Pit gates open at 4 p.m. and the grandstand opens at 5 p.m. Racing action gets under way at 6:45 p.m.

Minnesota golf at its best

I

n the tradition it has followed for 94 years, the 95th Resorters Golf Tournament will provide some of the most exciting and memorable golf action available.

But more than that, it is a family affair, providing traditions that connect the past to the present, bringing new generations of families to the lakes area.

Many of the best golfers in the state will be competing in the week-long event. The galleries will be filled with family and golf enthusiasts, all on hand to share the beautiful drives, the

errant shots and the game-winning putts on a course filled with history and signature holes.

The tournament will include not only some very serious competition that kicks off with the annual Pro-Am on opening Sunday, but some lively fun as well with a putting contest and the ever-quirky derby, sure to coax a laugh from even the most serious player.

Many high profile athletes have competed in this tourney, most notably professional golfer and Alexandria graduate Tom Lehman, who won the Resorters title in 1980. The Alexandria Golf Club is the place that the PGA Tour professional and USA Ryder Cup captain learned the game of golf.

TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE Action for the 95th annual Resorters Golf Tournament will begin on Sunday, July 31 with the Pro-Am tournament, then continue through August 6.

On Monday, play begins early with the qualifying rounds for the Men’s Executive Division, followed by the Men’s Senior, Men’s Masters, Women’s Regular and the Junior 13-15 Divisions.

Qualifying for the Men’s Regular Division will start Tuesday, followed by Junior 10-12 Division qualifying. Match play for all other divisions begins Tuesday as well.

Starting on Wednesday, all divisions will be competing in match play, which will continue through Saturday’s championship matches.

The finals are slated to begin at noon with the Junior Division, followed by the Men’s Senior and Men’s Masters, Women’s Regular and Men’s Regular and Executive Divisions.

Panther is Minnesota’s first legal whiskey distillery

M

ade right here in Douglas County, Panther Distillery of Osakis is the first legal whiskey distillery in Minnesota since Prohibition was repealed in 1933.

Using fresh, local ingredients from area farmers, the distillery uses a 500-gallon copper still to craft its handmade signature whiskey and bourbon. The spirits are then aged in American White Oak barrels.

It also has created a clear, unaged whiskey-flavored liquor called White Water whiskey, as well as their Bad Medicine gin and Spiked Apple Spirits, made from White Water whiskey infused with Minnesota-grown apples and pure cinnamon.

Panther Distillery was founded in 2010 by owner Adrian Panther, and began officially creating distilled spirits in May of 2012.

hreshing, a blacksmith shop and sawmills – step back in time and experience how farming used to be. July 30-31 marks the 32nd annual Rose City Threshing and Heritage Festi-

val, sponsored by the Spruce Hill Foundation. The Rose City Threshing and Heritage Festival has about 100 members, all dedicated to keeping farm history alive and each year about 3,000 people attend the Rose City Threshing and Heritage Festival.

Threshing machines and steam engines play the largest role at the festival. People can watch how farming was done before combines and modern farming technology.

Each year, the festival has three steam engines, which are run from gas or steam depending on the model, and three threshing machines. Steam engines burn

sakis will be getting ready to celebrate the 25th annual Roddin’ Round the Lake car show on Saturday, July 9.

Sponsored by the Central Lakes Cruzers, Roddin’ Round the Lake draws many spectators, car enthusiasts and car owners every year.

Starting at 2:30 p.m., awards and prizes will be distributed to registered car owners. After the awards are given, all of the cars will roll through the streets of Osakis, ending at the Community Memorial Home parking lot for the residents to enjoy.

Big Ole Bike Club rides are open to everyone

V

isitors and residents alike are welcome to join the organized group rides led by the Big Ole Bike Club. A nonprofit organization consisting of bike enthusiasts who love to get together and ride the beautiful trails and countryside of the Alexandria lakes area, the Big Ole Bike Club schedules five rides a week.

There are rides for road bikers as well as mountain and gravel road bikers, as well as beginners.

Rides on Monday at 4 p.m. and Thursday at 6 p.m. are geared

toward families and beginners, setting a slower pace. The Monday ride will travel approximately 25-28 miles over a two-hour time frame, perfect for learning about group rides while enjoying the trails and rural roads.

More experienced riders may find their spot in the Tuesday and Saturday rides that set a faster pace, while the gravel and mountain bikers can ride on Wednesdays.

Riders are encouraged to ride with the group for as much time as they want and can turn around whenever they wish.

The Big Ole Bike Club supports the Central Lakes Trail and promotes an active lifestyle.

The group meets at Big Ole Park at Second Ave. and Broadway in Alexandria.

TUESDAY RIDE ​6 p.m. – “New Tar Tuesday.” This ride is paced at 17 mph and above.

The ride explores the countryside looking for “New Tar” where riders can ride on smooth new roads. Leaves promptly at 6 p.m. from Big Ole Park.

WEDNESDAY RIDES ​6:30 p.m. – “Gravel & Mountain Biker.” Weekly rides meet at different locations. All rides leave promptly and range from 15-30 miles with shorter routes available and a ride leader who will not drop anyone. Check calendar for schedule.

THURSDAY RIDES 6 p.m. – “Buggy Ride.” This will be a slower paced ride that allows riders to bring children in a Burley or pull-behind buggy. It also stays on the trail. ​ 6 p.m. – The ride is paced at 17 mph and above.

SATURDAY RIDE ​7 a.m. – This ride is paced at 15-17 mph and above.

It will be a longer ride in nature where riders travel 40-50 miles. Meet at Big Ole Park. The time will depend on the weather.

BE COURTEOUS All trail users should be respectful of each other, regardless of mode of travel, speed or skill level.

RIGHT OF WAY Know the specific rules of your trail, which may be local, county, regional or state controlled. In general, cyclists should yield to all other users.

SIGNAL WHEN PASSING Bells are great to use when farther back, especially when followed by a greeting, “Good morning, I’ll be passing on your left side” as you approach. Yelling “On yer left” while passing at full speed is not courteous or safe.

PASS ON THE LEFT Just like a roadway, always pass trail users on the left side and only when it is safe and clear to do so.

USE CAUTION AT CROSSINGS There are many types of trail crossings in Minnesota, and they can be very dangerous when not paying full attention. Watch for signage and yield to cross traffic. If there are multiple lanes or blind spots, use extra caution.

T

he Central Lakes Trail is a paved, biking and walking trail that spans Douglas County from Osakis through Evansville and on to Fergus Falls in Otter Tail County.

The 55-mile-long trail, located on the old Burlington Northern rail line grade, connects the cities of Osakis, Nelson, Alexandria, Garfield, Brandon, Evansville and Melby in Douglas County.

The trail head and parking area in Alexandria are located at the north end of Broadway

in Big Ole Central Park. Other trail heads are available in the cities of Osakis, Garfield, Brandon and Evansville. These trail heads include a parking area, portable restrooms and a trailside shelter. A bike shelter is also available along the trail about one and one-half miles east of Nelson.

The Central Lakes Trail also connects to the Lake Wobegon trail, which runs from Osakis through Sauk Centre to St. Joseph. Together, they make the longest paved bike trail in the state. The Central Lakes Trail (www.centrallakestrail.com) is used as a snowmobile trail in the winter; however, studs are not allowed.

BE PREDICTABLE Trails can be great for training, but trails are for everyone. Never sacrifice your own or someone else’s safety for convenience. On busy weekends and evenings, fast training may be best left to the road. Signal your intentions and be sensitive to others.

USE LIGHTS AT NIGHT Some trails may be closed after dark. If open, a white headlight is required along with a rear red reflector. Red taillights are strongly recommended. Dark trails can require brighter lights to see hazards.

DO NOT BLOCK THE TRAIL Group rides are fun, but don’t take up more than your half of the trail. This often means riding single file on the trails.

CLEAN UP LITTER Don’t leave trash on the trail and pick up items (especially glass or other potentially hazardous debris) to make the trail a better place for everyone.

Lake Carlos State Park is a world of natural wonders

B

uilt by receding glaciers, Lake Carlos State Park is a myriad of natural wonders, including a clear and deep lake just perfect for swimming, fishing and boating. Among its 1,231 acres, nearly one-third of Minnesota’s 80 mammals and more than 150 species of birds find a home either seasonally or all year long. It’s the perfect place to view loons, grebes, ducks and heron, making this a bird watcher’s paradise!

You may even catch a glimpse of the beaver and deer that make their homes within the park.

The park also features a year-round naturalist that leads several programs throughout the year.

Winter or summer, Lake Carlos State Park is a magnet for outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking, skiing and interpretive programs are just waiting for you.

The park entrance, 2601 County Road 38 Northeast in Carlos, is located 10 miles north of Alexandria on State Highway 29, then two miles west on Highway 38. The best time to contact the park is 9 a.m.-4 p.m. daily at (320) 852-7200.

Special summer exhibits to enjoy

T

he Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum and Gardens, filled with the history of Minnesota lakes, is hosting the Smithsonian’s traveling exhibition of “X-ray Vision: Fish Inside Out” during the 2016 season.

Opening May 20, the Smithsonian’s national collection of these fish X-rays represents more than 70 percent of the world’s fish specimens and is the largest and most diverse collection of its kind in the world.

Along with the Smithsonian exhibit this summer is a select watercraft exhibition from the Lee Anderson collection.

Anderson has one of the finest collections of vintage watercraft in the world and his watercraft will be displayed in the North Gallery.

The museum, open May 20-November 1, is located in downtown Alexandria at 205 Third Avenue West, near the Alexandria Fire Department.

erhaps one of the most eye-catching “landmarks” in Alexandria is Big Ole – a 28-foot tall Viking statue that stands at the north end of Broadway.

Born in 1965, the Viking has become a much-respected resident in the lakes area.

Big Ole arrived at his home in Alexandria in front of the Runestone Museum in December of 1965. Now, more than 50 years later, he still stands strong.

KENSINGTON RUNESTONE It’s a controversy more than 100 years in the making: Did an immigrant Swedish farmer find a buried rock in 1898 that contained an ancient runic message carved by Viking explorers 100 years before Columbus landed in America? Or is the whole thing a hoax,

perpetrated by the farmer or some other prankster?

A large replica of the Kensington Runestone is located at a small, wayside rest. Visitors can read the inscription and take a photo by the replica. The replica is located in a small park at the east end of Sixth Avenue in Alexandria.

M

eandering along 245 miles of scenic roads between Alexandria and Willmar, the Glacial Ridge Trail Scenic Byway is the perfect drive for those wanting to get out and about.

Offering something for everyone, the trail includes historical, cultural and recreational possibilities along with the beautiful drive.

The byway loops between Willmar and Glenwood, with extensions

to Alexandria and Sauk Centre – perfect for sightseeing. Make sure to stop at historic sites, enjoy the hiking and biking trails and birding sites or maybe drop a line in a lake for some fishing.

A rolling landscape of lakes, streams, woodlands and prairie was created by the glaciers that moved through the area during the Ice Age – perfect for the four state parks that are connected by the scenic byway. They include Douglas County’s Lake Carlos State Park, as well as Glacial Lakes State Park, Monson State Park and Sibley State Park.

GLACIAL RIDGE TRAIL SCENIC BYWAY stretches from Douglas County Road 42 near Lake Carlos State Park all the way south to Willmar, with jaunts in and around Alexandria, Nelson, Osakis, Kensington, Villard, Glenwood, Starbuck, Terrace, Swift Falls, Sunburg, New London, Spicer, Murdock, Kerkhoven and other towns.

ALEXANDRIA BYWAY EXTENSION is on the northern end of the byway. The area boasts more than 300 lakes and water-related recreational opportunities.

FOUR COUNTIES are part of the byway – Douglas, Pope, Swift and Kandiyohi. All four have interpretive, five-panel kiosks that include a map of the trail systems, key highlights that can be found nearby, a listing of state parks, birding information, day trip ideas and historical and geological information.

LAKE CARLOS STATE PARK is on the northern end of the Alexandria Extension on Highway 29.

KENSINGTON RUNESTONE COUNTY PARK is found about 15 miles west of Alexandria on Highway 27.

THE DOUGLAS COUNTY KIOSK is located by the Douglas County Historical Society’s parking lot at 1219 Nokomis Street.

CITY PARKS

Alexandria City Park is at the north end of Alexandria, one block west of County Rd. 42.

It offers a playground, picnic area, tennis courts, swimming beach, bathhouse and fishing pier.

Noonan Park is at Nokomis Street and 10th Ave. in Alexandria.

Oak Knoll Park is on the northeast side of Alexandria near McKay Ave. Take Hwy. 29 North, turn right on McKay Ave. and left on Oak Knoll Dr.

Big Ole Central Park is on the north end of Broadway in Alexandria, next to Lake Agnes.

It features a gazebo, kiosk shelter and serves as a trail head for the Central Lakes Trail.

Osagi Park is on Lake St. in Osakis. It features picnic tables and shelter, restrooms, playground and lakeshore (no swimming area).

Dean Melton Fillmore Park is at Fillmore St. and 15th Ave. West in Alexandria.

Pooch Playland is a dog park with a fenced-in area located at the south end of Victor St. in Alexandria.

Fred Foslien Park is in Victoria Heights, two blocks south of County Rd. 82 off Knut Street in Alexandria.

Geneva Crest Park is on the west side of Lake Geneva in Alexandria (take County Rd. 82 East, turn north on Birch Ave., go 3/4 mile, go east on Basswood two blocks and north on Geneva Dr.).

Goose Park is three blocks west of Broadway on Fifth Avenue West in Alexandria.

Lake Agnes Park is on the south shore of Lake Agnes along County Rd. 37 in Alexandria.

Lake Connie Park is on Seventh Ave. East between Roosevelt and Spruce streets in Alexandria.

Lakeview Park is near County Rd. 82 East and Birch Ave. in Alexandria (take County Rd. 82 East to Birch Ave., turn west on Runestone Place and west on Lake Park Ave.).

Legion Park is at Broadway and Eighth Ave. West in Alexandria.

Manor Hills Park is in Alexandria. Take Hwy. 29 North to Manor Dr. and go two blocks to the right on Springdale.

Runestone Park is about one mile east of Broadway in Alexandria on Sixth Ave. East.

COUNTY PARKS

Chippewa Park is three miles north of Brandon on County Rd. 108. It features picnic tables, shelters, charcoal grills, restrooms, showers, drinking water, a swimming beach (no lifeguard), playground, horseshoe pit and camping sites.

Curt Felt Memorial Park is north of Alexandria off County Rd. 42. It has a volleyball court, playground, a picnic shelter, restrooms, horseshoe courts and a softball field.

Lake Brophy Park, located on the north side of Lake Brophy, is the newest addition to the county’s park system. Take County Road 82 west of Alexandria to the Brophy Landing road. Currently, the park is mostly undeveloped but includes a parking area, portable restroom, dock and fire ring. It also includes natural surface trails for walking, biking, and running, as well as access to the Central Lakes Trail.

Lake Brophy Wayside Park is west of Alexandria at the intersection of County Rds. 82 and 8. It has picnic tables, charcoal grills, restroom, drinking water, playground and views of Lake Brophy.

Kensington Runestone Park is 15 miles west of Alexandria on State Hwy. 27. It’s where the famed Kensington Runestone was found.

There are picnic tables, shelters, charcoal grills, electricity, restrooms, drinking water, heated building with kitchen facilities, softball field, horseshoe pit, volleyball court, playground, hiking and cross country ski trails and historic displays.

Spruce Hill Park is near Miltona (from Alexandria, take Hwy. 29 to County Rd. 5 and go east five miles). It has picnic tables, shelters, charcoal grills, electricity, restrooms, drinking water, softball field, and interpretive, hiking and cross country ski trails.

STATE PARK

Lake Carlos State Park is near Carlos. Take State Hwy. 29 north from Alexandria, turn west on County Rd. 38, turn left into park.

Permit is required; purchase at park office ($5/day, $25/year). The park features hiking, snowshoe, cross-country ski and snowmobile trails, picnic tables, shelters, swimming beach, canoe/paddleboat rentals, play area, camp sites, camper cabins, group camp, restrooms, showers, boat landing, amphitheater, visitor/interpretive center, naturalist programs, geocaching, equestrian area, skating area and fishouse rental.

Martin’s Hope Park is on Second Ave. across the street from Big Ole Central Park.
