How to think about color Did you know that design professionals use the color wheel when deciding how to decorate a space? Here are some color theory basics to help you think like a designer when adding color to your home.

THE COLOR WHEEL

The standard color wheel contains 12 colors: three primary colors, three secondary colors and six tertiary colors. Primary colors (red, yellow and blue) combine to form secondary colors (orange, violet and green).

Tertiary colors are derived from combinations of primary and secondary colors.

Variations on these base colors are created by using different shades, tints and tones. Tinting means adding white to make a color lighter while shading involves adding black to make it darker. Tone refers to mixing a color with a combination of white and black.

HOW DESIGNERS USE THE COLOR WHEEL WHEN DECORATING

Designers use these principles to figure out different ways to use color in a space.

Here are three common color schemes.

•Monochromatic: based on one color in various shades, tones and tints.

•Complementary: complementary colors (orange and blue, red and green, yellow and purple) are directly across from each other on the color wheel. In a complementary scheme, one color serves as the dominant hue and the other as an accent.

•Analogous: based on three colors found next to each other on the color wheel. It’s more subtle than using complementary colors but more colorful than a monochromatic interior.

eral, warm colors, which contain more red and yellow, are thought of as more vibrant and cozy while cool colors, which have more blue and violet in them, are seen as calm and relaxing.

Interior designer vs. interior decorator: You’ve probably heard the terms interior designer and interior decorator used interchangeably. However, they actually describe two different but similar professions.

Interior designers complete two- or four-year degree programs that involve studying subjects like color theory, architecture, computer-aided design and spatial planning.

They work with architects and contractors to plan and renovate spaces and can be involved in every step of the remodeling process, from drawing up floor plans to adding the final touches.

Interior decorators focus on esthetics. They help transform spaces that are already built by making recommendations about paint colors, furniture styles, lighting and accessories. They’re not required to complete professional training (though many decorators do), and they usually work directly with businesses and homeowners.

Should I hire a designer or a decorator?

If you need help with designs during a renovation, it’s best to go with an interior designer. They’ll help you create a space that serves your specific needs and aligns with your particular tastes. However, if you’re mainly looking to update the appearance of a space, a decorator can help you achieve a whole new look by rearranging and redecorating.

In the end, what matters most is not the job title, but the skills of the designer or decorator in question. Choose a company or professional with a reputation for high-quality designs and expertise in the type of work you’re looking for.

Keys to NAUTICAL home design Both classic and contemporary, the nautical look is never dated. Here are a few keys to perfecting this style.

NODS TO THE SEA AND SAILING. Lanterns, model ships, anchors, nautical maps and prints of sea creatures are among the many decorative elements that are well suited to nautically themed rooms.

WOOD ELEMENTS. Decorate with weathered wood that recalls the docks

and buildings of coastal areas. Alternatively, choose furniture made of shiny teak that’s reminiscent of a well-maintained captain’s cabin.

KNOTS AND ROPES. Ropes are omnipresent on most ships and are considered a must-have item in nautically themed rooms. To incorporate them, use interesting wall hangings or other decorations made with natural fibers like hemp or sisal to show off your nautical style.

SHIPLAP: a new rustic design trend

You may have heard the term mentioned, but do you know what shiplap really is? In point of fact, shiplap is a type of horizontal wood paneling that was originally used as airtight and watertight siding for buildings and ships.

Currently, shiplap is making a big impact on home design.

Shiplap lends a rustic or nautical charm to any room where it’s placed, regardless of whether it’s painted white

or stained to showcase the color of the wood. To get the look in your home, you can select either shiplap made of real wood or shiplap made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF). In both cases, the boards should be cut with grooves cut into each side so that they fit perfectly together.

If you’re interested in decorating with shiplap, you can find what you need at most hardware stores.

BLUE AND WHITE STRIPES. Blue and white stripes have long represented the sea and sky, making the combination a key part of any nautically themed room.

While the nautical theme can work almost anywhere in your house, it really shines in bathrooms and kitchens.

f you’ve been following design trends, you’ve probably heard about millennial pink. This rosy hue started to explode on the fashion, advertising and design scenes as early as 2012 and seven years later, there are no signs of it going away. Here are some tips on how to use this generation-defining color to decorate your home.

THINK ABOUT UNDERTONES. Millennial pink varies in shade from a vibrant grapefruit color to a beige pink or peachy salmon. In general, it’s a color almost pale enough to be a neutral while still distinctive enough to bring drab rooms to life.

Whatever variation you choose, make sure to consider the shade’s undertones when deciding how to use the color. Cooler pinks (shades with blue-grey rather than peach undertones)

PINK into your home

go well with white, grey and wood accessories while warmer, more salmon pinks go best with other warm shades.

START SMALL. Begin with a few pink touches to see how the color matches with the rest of your decor.

Innovative ways

to use a daybed

Both a couch and a bed, a daybed is an incredibly versatile piece of furniture that can be used in almost any room.

Wondering where to put yours? Here are some ideas to consider.

Home office. Placing a daybed in your home office enables you to make this room do double-duty as a guest room. When you don’t have visitors, use your daybed to read a book or take a mid-afternoon power nap.

Under a window. If you don’t already have a window seat in your home, a daybed placed under a window makes a wonderful substitute without requiring any heavy-duty renovations.

Teenager’s room. A daybed in your teen’s room allows him or her to have a private lounge area without sacrificing floor space. A trundle bed stored underneath will provide extra room for friends to get some shut-eye during sleepovers.

Organize your bedroom for If you have trouble winding down at night, your bedroom may be part of the problem. Here are four tips on how to organize your bedroom to achieve optimal sleep.

Invest in your bed. Don’t skimp when it comes to the quality of your mattress — your comfort directly affects the quality of your sleep. If your mattress is over seven years old, shows signs of wear or simply doesn’t feel comfortable, it’s time to invest in a new one. You should also select quality bedding; choose sheets with high thread counts made from materials like Egyptian cotton or satin.

Pay attention to lighting. Darkness is vital for allowing your body to go into sleep mode. Make sure your curtains

Balcony or deck. Daybeds aren’t reserved for indoor use only. Choose one made of weather-resistant material and place it on your patio or in your garden.

How to create a

gallery wall A well-executed gallery wall can be a stunning focal point in almost any room.

Follow this guide to create your own collection of photos and prints.

Choose a theme. Sticking to a theme will give your gallery wall cohesion. Select a color scheme or a specific type of image to display.

Select the right wall.

Choose a wall that has enough space to accommodate what you want to display without crowding the images.

Pick your frames. Opt for identical frames to make an impact, or go for a more eclectic look with frames of different sizes and shapes— just be sure they go together by choosing frames that are the same color.

Try it out. Before you start hammering nails into the wall, lay out your frames on the floor to make sure you like the arrangement of your chosen images.

Hang the pictures. To ensure you place your nails in the right places, make paper cutouts of each frame, mark where the nails should go, then tape the cutouts to the wall. When it’s perfect, hammer nails right through each piece of paper into the wall.

Five ways to embrace the farmhouse look You don’t have to live on a farm, or even in the country, to embrace a farmhouse esthetic. Here are five ways to get the look in your home.

Mix old and new. Farmhouse chic largely stems from mixing styles. In the kitchen, for example, don’t be afraid to combine hand-me-downs and flea market treasures

with the latest stainless steel appliances.

Use natural textures. Make your home feel like an extension of the outdoors. Use organic materials like wood and stone for the floors and decorate with items made of wool, rattan and reclaimed wood.

Veggie varieties for Midwest The American Midwest is renowned for its fertile farmland and abundance of produce crops. Want to enjoy your own little harvest this summer? Here are five tasty, easy-to-grow veggies that are perfectly suited for Midwest gardens.

Corn. No Midwest garden is quite complete without corn! Plant your crops close together for best results.

Water your corn regularly, and make sure that it gets enough nitrogen by mixing compost or herbivore manure in with the soil.

Potatoes. These hearty root vegetables are another staple of the Midwest.

Plant them in early spring, when the weather is cool and damp. Some varieties, such as red potatoes, can be

harvested in early summer; others, like russet potatoes, produce a fall crop.

Cabbage. Cabbage and its cruciferous cousins broccoli, cauliflower and kohlrabi all grow exceptionally well in the region. Plant them in early spring or late summer.

Three golden rules for

garden walkways

Walkways can serve several purposes in the garden: they let you move around freely throughout the different parts of the yard; they confer visual structure to the overall landscape; and they constitute an essential aesthetic component. Follow these three rules to make your walkways both beautiful and functional.

Adequate width. Your main walkway (the one leading to your front door) should be at least four feet wide to allow people to cross paths without difficulty. For secondary

walkways, a width between two and three feet is sufficient for foot traffic and wheelbarrows.

Harmonious materials. Brick, gravel, natural stone—there are all kinds of materials in all shapes and sizes you could use for your walkway.

To make the right choice, consider not only your budget but also the style of your home and your garden. Concrete, for instance, is perfect for an urban garden, while natural stone is ideal for a more rural landscape.

A solid base. For stable, durable walkways, dig up the ground, put down a geotextile tarp to prevent weed growth, and then add a layer of sand before laying down your covering of choice. Your walkways should ideally sit slightly below grass level to make it easier to mow the lawn.

They should also be built on a slight incline to prevent water accumulation.

Furthermore, make sure that the surface you choose isn’t too smooth to prevent falls.

Plugged in to a slow wall plug charger (the most common type of at-home charging point), the average EV will take between six and 12 hours to fully charge. DC fast chargers, on the other hand, typically add 50 to 90 miles in 30 minutes. However, charging time varies considerably depending on battery size, the speed of the charging point and the EV model.

Hybrid cars. Hybrid cars use both electricity and gasoline as fuel. Typically, a hybrid vehicle can charge its own batteries with its gas engine. Sometimes this is the engine’s sole function— to recharge the batteries powering the electric motor.

In other hybrid types, the gas engine takes precedence

and the electric motor adds a degree of electric drive.

Some hybrids are known as “plug-in” hybrids. These can be plugged in to the national grid like an EV, enabling an electric-only range (usually between 20 and 40 miles).

The main advantage to hybrid cars is that they reduce the amount of liquid fuel you use, thereby constituting a more environmentally friendly solution than purely diesel or gas cars. Plus, you don’t have the drawback of the long charging times characteristic of EVs. That said, they aren’t as green as EVs. In sum, while each has their pros and cons, EVs and hybrids are both great options for environmentally conscious and thrifty drivers.
