Lending a hand A helpful hand is appreciated no matter what the age. Former champ, NCAA II qualifier to face off Veteran Aldrich will take on Augustana’s Kvidera in finals Those following the Women’s Division this year are getting a good indication of why the Augustana girls’ golf team was able to take ninth place at the Division II NCAA championship this past spring.

Two players who were instrumental in the Vikings’ success put on quite a show yesterday afternoon. In the end, it was the Resorters’ newcomer moving on after a dramatic last hole saw Alexandria’s Maggie Leland get bounced from the tournament

Kvidera knows a thing or two about performing in clutch situations. She tied for 15th individually at the NCAA championship this past year and holds the Augustana record for the highest individual finish there when she was eighth in 2009.

Kvidera will now try to add a Resorters title to her resume as she takes on two-time Women’s champion Betsy Aldrich when they tee off from the 1st tee at 12:40 this afternoon. Here’s a look at how they got there.

KVIDERA DEF. LELAND, 1-UP The gallery was sensing a different outcome on the 18th green. With the two teammates all even, Leland had positioned herself for a win by sticking her approach shot within five feet of the pin.

That’s when Kvidera pulled off the biggest shot of her round to steal the victory. With an almost 30-foot putt staring her in the face, the 20-year-old stepped up and drained a birdie. Leland had a chance to force a playoff but her putt was off the mark as a match where neither player held more than a 1-up lead was put to bed in dramatic fashion.

These two went backand-forth with each other all afternoon.

the turn. A birdie win

by Kvidera on 2 gave her the early advantage before the former state champion from Alexandria used a par and a birdie to pick up wins on Nos. 3 and 6.

The two stepped up to the 7th tee and got a rise out of the gallery as they both stuck their drives to within five feet on the par-3.

Kvidera dropped her putt, while Leland missed on the opportunity as the two were back to even.

Leland’s par win on 9 gave her a lead that did not last long on the back. Kvidera birdied 10 and 12 to move ahead. Both players parred the next two holes before Leland evened things up with a par on the 15th. Two more pars then set the stage for what was coming on the 18th.

ALDRICH DEF. WOODHULL, 5-4 If Kvidera is going to win her first Resorters title she’ll have to do it against a seasoned veteran.

St. Louis Park’s Betsy Aldrich was steady again on Friday as she cruised to a 5-4

win over Minnetonka’s Amanda Woodfull.

Aldrich used a torrid run on the back to pull away. She led by just one at the turn but back-to-back birdies put her 3-up after 11.

She never looked back from there. The 2003 and 2008 champion parred the 13th to go 4up before putting things away with a birdie win on 14. Her 3under performance on the back helped her overcome three bogeys on the front and secure another chance at a title.

Johnson, Adams to battle for title Johnson hoping to repeat; Adams looking for upset Chaska’s Lincoln Johnson is one step closer to repeating as the Juniors 10-12 champion after defeating Ben Doherty of Aleandria 5-3 Friday in the semifinals.

Two former champions remain Two former champions remain in the Men’s Executive Division as Jon Freeman and Tim Peterson will fight for a spot in the finals with Woodbury’s Eric Heimsness and St. Cloud’s Darryl Schomer today.

A battle between the Freeman brothers started as the news of the day, but it was Schomer who stole the show with a dominant performance in a victory over Alexandria’s Chris Haugen. The field of four will be dwindled to one by the end of the day as the Execs tee off from the first box at 6:54 a.m.

Here is how the semifinalists got here: J. FREEMAN DEF. S. FREEMAN, 2-UP Stefan Freeman had to go extra holes but he got through his brother in 2009 to win the Executive title. Two years later, Jon got a chance at redemption and did not miss the opportunity in a 2-up win.

“He got revenge on me today,” Stefan said.

It looked like things

might go his way again early in yesterday’s match. Stefan came out the gate with back-toback birdies that gave him a 2-up lead before Jon answered with a par win on the 3rd.

Neither of these two would ever separate themselves by much.

Jon went par, birdie on Nos. 5 and 6 to take his first lead of the day. He went into the turn at 1up before Stefan answered with a par win at 11.

The two would split the 12th before Stefan opened the door over the next two holes. Jon took advantage of back-to-back bogeys by his younger brother to take a 2-up lead. Jon never gave back another hole as he kept his hopes of repeating alive.

HEIMSNESS DEF. C. JOHNSON, 1-UP Woodbury’s Eric Heimsness will get a shot at dethroning Freeman after holding on for a 1-up win over Burnsville’s Chad Johnson.

Heimsness’ day turned on No. 6 with a

beautiful birdie that gave him a 1-up lead.

He played a perfect shot out of the left bunker to within a foot or two of the pin. A tap-in birdie gave him a lead he would never relinquish the rest of the day.

He followed that up with another birdie win on the par-3 7th.

The two players halved the next four holes before a birdie win at 12 gave Heimsness a 3up cushion.

That win would prove vital down the stretch. Johnson battled back with back-toback birdie wins on 15 and 16. That brought

him to within one, but Heimsness put the pressure on by parring the final two holes.

Johnson could not find a birdie to tie things up as Heimsness held on for the narrow win.

T. PETERSON DEF. LYCZEWSKI, 3-1 Peterson, the 2002 and 2003 champion from Lino Lakes, was on his game in a narrow win over Crookston’s Mark Lyczewski.

Peterson used a birdie on No. 4 to build a 2-up lead that he never gave back.

SCHOMER DEF. HAUGEN, 7-6 Schomer will be the odds on favorite to win his first Executive title if he returns today with the same game he left the course with yesterday.

The 37-year-old was lights out on his way to a runaway win over Haugen. Schomer took control early, shooting 6-under on the front. That’s exactly where he finished after his only blemish came on a bogey loss on No. 10.

That was the only win Haugen could muster. No one was going to beat Schomer on this day as he got birdie wins on Nos. 1, 2, 6, 7, 8 and 9 to move 7up heading into the turn. It was all but over after that. The two players halved No. 11 before Schomer ended things just as he started, with a birdie win on 12.

CHIP SHOTS All-state girls’ golf Alexandria’s Maxine Carlson was named to the Minnesota Golf Association’s All-state third team recently after making the trip to state.

Carlson was joined on the third team by Minnewaska’s Sam Falk and Brianna Janu.

Kelsey Ross of Osakis was named to the second team.

Alex duo in Women’s State Amateur Alexandria’s Nancy Syverson and Martha Fluegel combined for a 170 to finish tied for third in the second flight of the 32nd Minnesota Women’s State Amateur Four-Ball Championship at Interlaken Golf Club in Fairmont.

The duo was three strokes off the top score in the second flight.

Winning the championship flight was Olivia Lansing and Natalie Samb with a 150, while Donelle Walndrie and Lisa Smith carded a 151 for top honors in the first flight.

Hole-in-one Geoffrey Griepentrog, 13, of Alexandria got a hole in one at the MN Junior PGA tournament at Whitetail Run Golf Course in Wadena last Friday, July 8.

Defending champ upended Mankato’s Cliff falls in semifinals; Wernick, Vincelli advance to finals A long layoff from the Resorters tournament has not affected Bob Wernick in the least.

The Rancho Mirage, California native has a history at the tournament with two Senior Division championships (1999, 2003) and an Executive title in 1994. He will have a chance to add to that legacy this afternoon after securing a spot in the finals with a win over Erik Hanson of Stowe, Vermont.

Wernick will have his hands full against another worthy opponent. Third-seeded Pat Vincelli of Rosemount, making his first Resorters appearance, will counter him as they battle for all the marbles when the Masters tee off from the 1st tee at 12:20 this afternoon. Here’s a look at how they got there: WERNICK DEF. HANSON, 4-3 Wernick has been a model of consistency through much of this week, and that continued on Friday afternoon as he took control early in his 4-3 win over Hanson.

Wernick continued to pile on after making the turn. A birdie win on 10 and a par win on 11 gave him his biggest lead of the day at 7-up. That was more than enough to hold off a three-hole surge

by Hanson. His par wins on Nos. 12, 13 and 14 gave him a sliver of hope, but Wernick put an end to that as both players parred the 15th to end the match.

VINCELLI DEF. CLIFF, 3-2 While Wernick searches for his fourth Resorters title, he will have to take it from a guy who’s going after his first.

Vincelli already took down a Resorters veteran with plenty of championship experience when he defeated Mankato’s George Cliff in the semis.

Vincelli never trailed in this one as he used a par win on the 1st and a birdie on the 2nd to go 2-up.

Cliff, a two-time champion in the Executive Division and a four-time champ in the Senior Men’s, kept within striking distance but could never get out of that hole. He took No. 5 with a birdie, but it was no momentum changer. Vincelli followed with a par win on the 6th before he defied the odds and carded an eagle from 140 yards out on the par-4 8th. Vincelli wasn’t about to give that away on the back. He parred the 10th to go 4-up before Cliff cut his lead to two with birdie and par wins on Nos. 12 and 13. Vincelli answered with a par win on the 14th to put him directly in the driver’s seat. Two holes later he had secured his chance at a title as both players went par, birdie to close out the match after 16.

Heinen one match away from second championship Alexandria’s Cole Haugen is looking to step up and secure his first title The 2009 Junior Division champion will be looking to grab another title today when Nick Heinen of Edmond, Oklahoma takes off today at noon from the first tee.

Heinen will face Cole Haugen of Alexandria for the Junior 13-15 Division crown after the two won their semifinal matches yesterday. Heinen was a 6-4 winner over Ryan Swedberg of Monterey, California, while Haugen defeated Cole Matthews of Edmond, Oklahoma.

HAUGEN DEF. MATTHEWS 4-3 Holding off a late surge by another Oklahoman, Alexandria’s Haugen swept to a 5-3 win over Matthews.

The front nine was all Haugen’s as he won six of the nine holes, allowing Matthew’s just one win and halving the other two.

On the back nine, the first hole finished evenly before Matthews tried to mount a comeback with a par, then a birdie win to cut the lead to 3-up.

But Haugen wasn’t to be denied, winning No. 13 on a par and ending the match.

HEINEN DEF. SWEDBERG 6-4 The Oklahoma golfer opened yesterday’s round with a bang as he put up a birdie on the first hole to go ahead.

Swedberg didn’t seem to be fazed by the move, countering with a bogey win on No. 3 and a par on No. 4 to even the match, then take the lead.

Heinen didn’t let that small setback get him down, returning to secure three of the final four holes on the front nine with birdie, par, birdie, giving him a 2-up lead at the turn.

Turning his attention to the back nine, Heinen continued his torrid pace, winning four of the next five holes on birdie, par, par and par to close out the match with a 5-up lead with four holes remaining.

Two former champs survive scares in Men’s Division Two golfers who have won all the marbles before in the Resorters Men’s Championship survived down-to-thewire matches yesterday.

Both the defending champ, Don Constable of Deep Haven, and the 2008 titlist, Tyler Whiting of Eagan, needed all 18 holes before putting their opponents away.

Another member of the Final Four, Ben Vangsness, took his match into an extra hole to stay alive.

The only survivor who had a fairly easy time of it was Sam Peterson of Benson, who coasted to a 5-3 win over Luke Johnson of Alexandria. (A correction from yesterday’s story: Johnson

won a 25-hole match on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals – not 26 holes as reported.)

So who will be the 2011 Resorters Men’s Division champion?

The “lefty” – 22-yearold Constable?

The “old man” of the group – 24-year-old Whiting?

The “Alexandrian” – 22-year-old Vangsness?

Or the talented “rookie” – 17-year-old Peterson?

The four will tee it up today when the action starts from No. 1 at 7:06 a.m. The winners will play in the final match that’s tentatively set to get underway at 1 p.m. from No. 1.

Here’s a recap of yesterday’s matches:

CONSTABLE DEF. MONTPLAISIR, 1-UP. Seventeen-year-old Jacob Montplaisir of Gilbert, Arizona gave last year’s champion all he could handle yesterday.

Through the first nine holes, Montplaisir held a 2-up lead, thanks to birdie wins on Nos. 3 and 6 and a par win on the 9th hole. Constable notched just one win on the front, a birdie to start the match.

Montplaisir added a par win on No. 10 to go 3-up and matched Constable’s pars on the next two holes.

Down by three with six holes left, the defending champ made his move, stringing together a trio of wins with par, birdie, par to tie the match.

Montplaisir had a little trouble during that stretch.

He threeputted No. 13 for bogey and hit it into the trees on No. 15.

After both golfers bogeyed No. 16, Montplaisir’s tee shot on the par-3 17th flew the green. Constable took advantage with a par to take the lead for only the second time of the day.

Constable ended the match in style, sinking a 10-foot birdie on No. 18 to win 1-up.

VANGSNESS DEF. KLEIN IN 19 HOLES The momentum swung back and forth in the Vangsness/Dan Klein match so many times, it felt like they were playing tennis.

Vangsness won No. 1 with par. Klein won No. 2 with birdie. Vangsness countered with a par win on No. 3 and added another par win on No. 5.

Klein struck back with a birdie win on No. 6, but Vangsness returned the volley with a birdie win on No. 7.

No problem. Klein answered back with another birdie on No. 8 to pull within one, but Vangsness finished the front with a par win to go 2-up.

The match settled down on the back nine.

Both golfers matched each other on Nos. 10 through 14 with par, birdie, birdie, par, par.

Vangsness’ serve with a birdie win on No. 15 and followed that up with two more wins, birdie on No. 16 and a par on No. 17 to pull out front by one. Vangsness’ drive on No. 17, wowed the crowd, hitting the top of the pin and kicking off the green.

Vangsness did what he had to do on No. 18 – a birdie that tied the match.

On the first extra hole, Vangsness’ drive landed on the edge of the green and he chipped to within six feet. He then drained the birdie putt to ice the win.

PETERSON DEF. JOHNSON, 5-3 The match between Peterson and Johnson was a close one through the front nine.

Peterson took an early advantage with wins on Nos. 1 (birdie) and 3 (par) but Johnson bounced back with par wins on Nos. 5, 7 and 9 to go 1-up at the turn.

That’s when Johnson took his game to a new level, birdying Nos. 10, 11 and 12 to go 2-up, adding par wins on Nos. 13 and 14 and then ending the match with a birdie win on No. 15.

The six-hole streak gave him a 5-3 victory.

WHITING DEF. SHROYER, 2-UP On the wings of an eagle, Whiting won four holes on the back nine en route to a 2-up win over the 2008 Resorters Junior Division champion, Joey Shroyer of Victoria.

It was a close contest from the get-go.

Whiting won No. 2 with birdie and Shroyer followed with a birdie win on the next hole.

Shroyer grabbed the lead with a birdie on No. 5, but Whiting came back with a par win on the short 7th hole.

Both golfers swapped pars on the last two holes on the front, leaving the match all square at the turn.

Shroyer jumped into the lead for the second time with a birdie on No. 11 but Whiting’s eagle flew on the par-5 12th to tie the match.

He moved ahead with a par on No. 13.

Shroyer fought back and tied it on No. 14 with a par, but Whiting answered on No. 16 with a par to regain the lead.

After they both halved the 17th with pars, Whiting closed the door with a par win on No. 18 for a 2-up triumph.

Empanger still hunting The Chaska golfer will face Alexandria’s Bill Freeman for Senior crown

SENIOR MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP UPPER BRACKET

Only one thing stands between Chaska’s Jon Empanger and his eighth Resorters title – Alexandria golfer Bill Freeman.

That matter will be settled today as the Senior Men’s finalists will head out at 12:20 p.m. today from the first tee.

EMPANGER DEF. BATTEY 6-4 Not much seems to faze Empanger as he whipped out four straight wins in his match yesterday against Dave Battey of Alexandria, opening with a birdie, then adding a par, another birdie and another par for a quick 4-up lead.

Battey settled in to take the next two holes on a par and a birdie, cutting back on Enpanger’s lead to make it 2-up.

Echo Press Empanger, though, Dave Battey was smiling at his fortune yesterday after a long putt from the fringe dropped in on the didn’t let up and 6th green during his match against Jon Empanger in the Senior Men’s Division. Bill Freeman had to battle Steve Tessmer of Hood, Oregon to a 2-1 finish to advance.

Tessmer and Freeman traded holes through the first half of the front nine as Tessmer notched the first win on a par at No. 1.

Freeman birdied the second hole to even the match but Tessmer came back with a par win on No. 3 to go up one.
