fter getting a taste of an early spring, the return of cold weather really put a damper on the hopes of a longer outdoor season. Fortunately, we Minnesotans are a hardy bunch and bounce back quickly, taking life as it comes in this part of the country.

The return of summer is marked by Memorial Day and Ole Oppe Fest. Formerly Awake the Lakes, the festival includes the Memorial Day parade and ceremony to honor our troops as well as music, food and entertainment. Rain or shine, we get you ready for the summer days that are just on the horizon.

Love the water? Then head for one of the many lakes for swimming, skiing, boating or fishing.

Throw on your retro prom clothes, pouf up your hair and head for The Awesome 80s Prom hosted by the Alexandria Area Arts Association Theatre (AAAA) at the Holiday Inn in Alexandria, where all four ballrooms will be transformed for this production.

Performed in the style of Tony ‘n’ Tina’s Wedding, The Awesome 80s Prom, set at Wanaget High in 1989, was a highly touted interactive Broadway show with a record-breaking run as Off-Broadway’s second longest-running interactive show. The original script was conceived and directed by Ken Davenport, and written by Davenport and “The Class of 1989,” a group of performers. It has been produced in Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas and Min-

neapolis. The Awesome 80s Prom has been performed around the country with permission from Samuel French Inc. During its performance here in Alexandria, the audience will decide who takes home the titles of Prom King and Prom Queen, all the while dancing to the 80s favorites such as Love Shack

by B52’s, Addicted to Love by Robert Plant and Livin’ on a Prayer by Bon Jovi and being right in the midst of the performance.

dding to the diversity of entertainment in the Alexandria lakes area, the Central Lakes Concert Association brings beautiful musical performances right to the community.

On Tuesday, May 10, Salut Salon, a quartet known for their chamber music, will entertain the audience as they combine beloved classical music with tango, folk and film soundtracks including Danse Macabre

by Saint-Saens, Oblivion by Piazzolla and Hungarian Dance No. 2 by Brahms.

Formed in 1983, the first season of CLCA included four concerts and has expanded to include reciprocity with the Sauk Centre Concert Association, as well as Ortonville/Milbank, Brainerd, Fergus Falls and Wadena, giving patrons an enormous variety of entertainment from September through May. Upcoming performances for the 20162017 season also include Dallas Brass, Vancouver Chanber Choir, New Odyssey

Christmas Show with 3 Guys (Gary Todd, Michael Jay and Gary Polkow), Wylie and The Wild West with Wylie Gustafson, Piano Conversions with Julian Gargiulo and Tribute to the King with Travis LeDoyt. Those dates will be released later in the year.

A season membership, which includes tickets to all concerts in Alexandria and the five other communities involved in the CLCA, is just $40 per adult, or $90 for a family membership. Students receive a membership for just $15.

EAC offers huck weaving exhibit

S

erving as a unique exhibit gallery, gift shop and free book lending library, the Evansville Art Center serves the people of Evansville and surrounding areas, providing art experiences for people of all ages.

The May exhibit at the EAC will be Scandinavian needle arts, primarily Swedish weaving, which is also known as huck weaving.

Using a specialty fabric called huck, a design is then stitched on top of the fabric so that the thread never appears on the back. It was highly popular in the United States in the 1930s and 1940s, mostly used in hand and dish towels, but dates back as far as the 1600s.

Huck weaving is a combination of embroidery, weaving and darning. The reason for the name Swedish weaving is uncertain, since there is no apparent historical link to Sweden. Sweden may have gotten credit for the weaving since many of the surviving linens and clothes with this stitch originally came from Sweden.

The Scandinavian Fiber Arts exhibit will be Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and running from May 6 through May 28. The center is at 111 Main Street in Evanville.

Farm animals up close and personal

L

ocated in rural Osakis, Erickson’s Petting Zoo gives visitors a little taste of the farm and allows young and old alike to get up close and personal with a variety of farm animals and birds.

The zoo is run by Dave and Pam Erickson, along with their family, and they have converted their big red barn into a home for pygmy goats, sheep, miniature horses, Sara the llama,

potbelly pigs, rabbits and cats. There are also many varieties of chickens, ducks, geese, pheasants, peacocks, pigeons and doves.

In addition to the barn, there’s a goat treehouse, a pony ring, a playground and sand pile, an orange mesh maze, a party shed, outdoor animal viewing areas and more.

Seasonal events are also held at Erickson’s, including their annual Easter Egg hunt in the spring and the corn maze and pumpkin patch in the fall.

The zoo is located at 11890 Hope Road, between Osakis and Alexandria, north of Interstate 94 and north of County Road 82.

Book a wine tasting at Burr Vineyards for you and your friends

A

small boutique winery in western Douglas County, Burr Vineyards specializes in handcrafted wines from cold-hardy grapes grown on the property, and features tours of the prairie and an outdoor brick oven for parties, along with their wine tasting.

Overlooking Burr Lake, the winery property provides a beautiful tableau for visitors with its winding natural woodland and prairie wildlife trails.

There are 14 varieties of wine grapes, all coldhardy, which means they can withstand the

frigid 40 below zero winter temperatures without special protection. The wine grape varieties were developed at the University of Minnesota.

Florian Ledermann is the winemaker and co-founder of Burr Vineyards and has the wine cellar stocked with eight different varietals and blends of both red and white wines.

A highlight for many is the grape picking in late September. Volunteers help with the harvest and enjoy a get-together at the end of the day.

Pickers are selected on a first-come, first-served basis of those signing up. Simply email the vineyard to have your name added to their list.

The vineyards, tours and tastings are open for visitors by appointment only from June through October.

Summer kicks off with Memorial Day programs, Ole Oppe Fest, parades

C

elebrate the summer with Alexandria’s summer kickoff event – Ole Oppe Fest, featuring live music, food, activities, wing sauce competition, beer garden and more.

Held on Memorial Day weekend, Ole Oppe Fest will be celebrated Friday-Saturday, May 27-28 on the shores of Lake Agnes, just north of downtown at Big Ole Park.

The festival originally began

as a thank you to the community after donations poured in to renovate Alexandria’s most famous landmark, Big Ole, and eventually became an annual event.

Dubbed Ole Oppe Fest (oppe means “up” in Norwegian), this event celebrated Big Ole’s new paint job and reinforced body.

Many other events are held in conjuction with the Big Ole celebration, including car shows, sidewalk sales, church services, a pancake breakfast and 5K and 10K runs.

Rain or shine, the celebration will be held on Second Avenue. Make sure not to miss it!

Lake Carlos State Park is a world of natural wonders

uilt by receding glaciers, Lake Carlos State Park is a myriad of natural wonders, including a clear and deep lake just perfect for swimming, fishing and boating. Among its 1,231 acres, nearly one-third of Minnesota’s 80 mammals and more than 150 species of birds find a home either seasonally or all year long. It’s the perfect place to view loons, grebes, ducks and heron, making this a bird watcher’s paradise!

You may even catch a glimpse of the beaver and deer that make their homes within the park.

The park also features a year-round naturalist that leads several programs throughout the year.

Winter or summer, Lake Carlos State Park is a magnet for outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking, skiing and interpretive programs are just waiting for you.

The park entrance, 2601 County Road 38 Northeast in Carlos, is located 10 miles north of Alexandria on State Highway 29, then two miles west on Highway 38. The best time to contact the park is 9 a.m.-4 p.m. daily at (320) 852-7200.

Knute Nelson home houses Alexandria history

I

nterested in local history? Visit the Douglas County Historical Society and take a guided tour of the famous Knute Nelson house, home of one of Alexandria’s most famous residents. Nelson, who served the people of Minnesota in public office for more than 50 years, was elected to the Minnesota Legislature, and served two terms in the U.S. Congress before becoming the state’s first foreign-born governor. He then served in the U.S. Senate for 28 years.

Nelson claimed a homestead in Alexandria in 1871 and built a small house on the property in 1874. As his political career progressed, he made

additions to the house, adding a formal living room and large bedroom in 1900 and a dining room and kitchen on the main floor and four more bedrooms on the second story in 1915.

Nelson died in 1923. His will stated that following the death of his daughter, Ida, the house was to be given to the Norwegian Lutheran Church as a “home for the aged.” It served in that capacity for 38 years.

In 1978, the house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. On October 1, 1987, the “Knute Nelson House” became the headquarters of the Douglas County Historical Society.

National Safe Boating Week is May 21-27, 2016 Stay stafe on the water With the recent ice out, Minnesotans have begun to prep their boats for fishing and boating on the state’s many lakes.

National Safe Boating Week, May 21-27, seeks to remind people about the importance of being safe while on the water.

Here are a few tips before you hit the water: • Prepare your boat by scheduling a vessel safety check with your local U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary orS. Power Squadrons.

• Know the latest marine weather forecast and dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature.

• File a float plan with someone you trust that includes details about the trip and emergency contacts.

And, once on the water: • Follow navigation rules, such as maintaining a proper lookout and safe speed.

• Make sure everyone – even experienced swimmers – wears a properly fitting U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket appropriate for the water activity.

• Never boat under the influence. Alcohol is responsible for 21 percent of boating fatalities.

• Keep in touch. Cell phones, satellite phones, emergency position radio beacons, VHF radios and personal locator beacons can all contribute in an emergency.

• Don’t panic if you fall into the water. Stay afloat with the help of your life jacket, regain control of your breathing, keep your head above water in vision of rescuers, and stay with the boat if possible.

• If there is excess room above the openings and the life jacket rides up over your chin or face, it does NOT fit properly. A snug fit in these areas signals a properly fitting life jacket.

• It is extremely important that you choose a properly fitting life jacket.

T

he Central Lakes Trail is a paved, biking and walking trail that spans Douglas County from Osakis through Evansville and on to Fergus Falls in Otter Tail County.

The 55-mile-long trail, located on the old Burlington Northern rail line grade, connects the cities of Osakis, Nelson, Alexandria, Garfield, Brandon, Evansville and Melby in Douglas County.

The trail head and parking area in Alexandria are

located at the north end of Broadway in Big Ole Central Park. Other trail heads are available in the cities of Osakis, Garfield, Brandon and Evansville. These trail heads include a parking area, portable restrooms and a trailside shelter. A bike shelter is also available along the trail about one and one-half miles east of Nelson.

The Central Lakes Trail also connects to the Lake Wobegon trail, which runs from Osakis through Sauk Centre to St. Joseph. Together, they make the longest paved bike trail in the state. The Central Lakes Trail (www.centrallakestrail.com) is used as a snowmobile trail in the winter; however, studs are not allowed.

Share the Trail BE COURTEOUS All trail users should be respectful of each other, regardless of mode of travel, speed or skill level.

PASS ON THE LEFT Just like a roadway, always pass trail users on the left side and only when it is safe and clear to do so.

RIGHT OF WAY Know the specific rules of your trail, which may be local, county, regional or state controlled. In general, cyclists should yield to all other users.

USE CAUTION AT CROSSINGS There are many types of trail crossings in Minnesota, and they can be very dangerous when not paying full attention. Watch for signage and yield to cross traffic. If there are multiple lanes or blind spots, use extra caution.

SIGNAL WHEN PASSING Bells are great to use when farther back, especially when followed by a greeting, “Good morning, I’ll be passing on your left side” as you approach. Yelling “On yer left” while passing at full speed is not courteous or safe.

BE PREDICTABLE Trails can be great for training, but trails are for everyone. Never sacrifice your own or someone else’s safety for convenience. On busy weekends and evenings, fast training may be best left to the road. Signal your intentions and be sensitive to others.

USE LIGHTS AT NIGHT Some trails may be closed after dark. If open, a white headlight is required along with a rear red reflector. Red taillights are strongly recommended. Dark trails can require brighter lights to see hazards.

DO NOT BLOCK THE TRAIL Group rides are fun, but don’t take up more than your half of the trail. This often means riding single file on the trails.

CLEAN UP LITTER Don’t leave trash on the trail and pick up items (especially glass or other potentially hazardous debris) to make the trail a better place for everyone.

Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum and Gardens is a look back in time

M

uch of Minnesota’s history is inspired by the many beautiful lakes throughout our state, and the Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum and Gardens is dedicated to bringing that history to the public.

Opening May 20, the museum features handcrafted wooden boats, grand hotels and fishing clubs, bringing to life traditions that reach back nearly a century and a half.

These diverse exhibits, as well as the Maritime Gardens, are all part of the Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of antique and classic watercraft, resort memorabilia and sporting equipment used on the Minnesota lakes.

Cell phone tours are now available to visitors, offering information about points of interest noted by small signs to indicate an audio stop.

The museum is located in downtown Alexandria at 205 Third Avenue West, near the Alexandria Fire Department.

RESORTS AND GRAND HOTELS Family time at one of Minnesota’s numerous resorts is a memory for many people of their time at the lake. This exhibit features the grand hotels in photographs and memorabilia.

SUMMER PORCH This screened-in porch, part of the hotels and resorts exhibit, includes the history of the Minnesouri Club on Lake Miltona, a private collection of cottages with residents from Missouri.

MINNESOTA BOAT BUILDERS In the Alexandria Boat Works exhibit is an interactive presentation of the wood boat building industry in Minnesota during the 1900s as well as designs, tools and notes on how these boats were constructed.

GAR WOOD EXHIBIT International boat racer Garfield “Gar” Wood’s career began as a boy on Lake Osakis, and this exhibit includes movie-tone news reels that tell the story of his “Miss America” boat setting speed records and winning the Harmsworth Trophy six consecutive years.

LARSON BOAT WORKS Started in the garage of Paul Larson in Little Falls, Larson Boat Works has become a mainstay in the boating industry. The colorful graphics in this exhibit take you through the development of his company. Boats from the company are also on display, including the “Falls Flyer.”

FISHING GALLERY Along with vintage fishing gear and memorabilia, the gallery highlights several legendary fishing guides from the lakes area.

HISTORY OF CHRIS-CRAFT The story of the Chris-Craft brand is told from Chris Smith’s early days building racing boats to the formation of the company in 1922 and its evolution into America’s premier wood boat builder.

P

erhaps one of the most eye-catching “landmarks” in Alexandria is Big Ole – a 28-foot tall Viking statue that stands at the north end of Broadway.

Born in 1965, the Viking has become a much-respected resident in the lakes area.

The idea for the statue began in January of 1964 when North Star World’s Fair Corporation in Osseo began working on an addition to the Minnesota display for the New York World’s Fair.

The display was to feature the historical Kensington Runestone in an animated scene titled “Minnesota, Birthplace of America.” The new item to coincide with this display was the 28-foot, fourton Viking statue.

Big Ole was completed by Gorden Displays of Minneapolis in April of 1965 and was transported to New

York just in time for the World’s Fair.

Big Ole arrived at his home in Alexandria in front of the Runestone Museum in December of 1965. Now, more than 50 years later, he still stands strong.

KENSINGTON RUNESTONE It’s a controversy more than 100 years in the making: Did an immigrant Swedish farmer find a buried rock in 1898 that contained an ancient runic message carved by Viking explorers 100 years before Columbus landed in America? Or is the whole thing a hoax, perpetrated by the farmer or some other prankster?

A large replica of the Kensington Runestone is located at a small, wayside rest. Visitors can read the inscription and take a photo by the replica. The replica is located in a small park at the east end of Sixth Avenue in Alexandria.

Along with the Runestone, the museum holds exhibits on Native Americans, early immigrant history, the history of Alexandria, a memorial/gun exhibit, a Minnesota wildlife exhibit, and a hands-on children’s area.

FORT ALEXANDRIA Houses the Runestone Museum and is a nearly exact replica of the stockade built in 1862 and contains several original buildings, including an 1889 church, a log cabin built in the late 1860s and an 1885 schoolhouse.
