FACILITYinfo Lakes Area Recreation Center Amenities include a cardio room, weight room, gymnasium, gymnastics center, locker rooms, multipurpose room, and Discovery Middle School pool.

The recreation facilities are available to rent for parties, family get-togethers or club meetings.

Reimbursement Policy 1. A credit will be issued for future LAR activities.

2.There will be a $2 “Transaction Fee” for all refunds and transfers to other activities.

3. A credit (less a $2 “Transaction Fee”) will be is sued if a participant calls prior to the start of the activity.

4. No credits will be issued after the starting date of the activity.

Locker Rentals Gym lockers for pass holders and punch pass holders is free. Non-members $20 annually, six month rental is $10, and monthly is $5.

Special Needs If you have a disability and assistance is needed in participating in any Lakes Area Recreation class, or if you have questions about accessibility, call 762-2868.

Fee Assistance United Way of Douglas & Pope Counties has made fee assistance available. In order to qualify for fee assistance you must bring a copy of your qualification for free or reduced lunch from School District #206 and/or proof of assistance from Social Services, and register for all activities in the LAR office.

Fitness classes, dance and camps do not qualify for United Way Funding.

Noon Time Pickleball Pickleball is a sport described as “a combination of ping-pong, tennis, and badminton”, played in schools, parks, and recreation centers. It uses a simplified combination of tennis rules and strategies. Equipment will be provided.

This is a drop-in activity, no experience necessary.

Experienced players will be on site for instruction.

Cardio/Nautilus Room The cardio room features three “treadmills,” three Ellipticals, and one recumbent stationary bike. We also have Nautilus Steel Strength Equipment which includes: bicep curl, lat pull down, tricep press, pec fly, abdominal, low back, leg extension, hip abduction, leg press, shoulder press, and chest press. We encourage you to try a variety of exercise activities while being entertained by four TV’s with Broadcast Vision.

Participants should bring in their own FM band walkman and tune into the TV of their choice. This equipment accommodates the beginner as well as the advanced exercise enthusiast.

FITNESS Weight Room The weight room consists of five benches, leg extension, lat pull-down, cable crossover, preacher curl, multi-rack system, dumbbells, 5 bars, and over 6,000 pounds of free weights.

Weight Room Policies • No one under the age of 14 will be allowed to use the weight room unless accompanied by their parent.

• It is recommended that everyone lift with a partner.

• Lifting alone is strongly discouraged. Lifts with straight bars, incline, and flat benches, military press, and squats are not allowed while lifting alone. However, certain exercises are permitted.

• Clean workout clothes and proper gym shoes are required.

• Do not drop weights after completing a lift. All weights must be put away before leaving weight room.

• Anyone violating the weight room policies will no longer be allowed to use the weights.

The SilverSneakers® Fitness Classes provide a great workout for seniors of all ages and abilities. SilverSneakers® is the nation’s leading fitness program designed exclusively for older adults and is available at no additional cost to eligible Medicare members. In Minnesota, this program is offered to eligible members of Humana, Medica, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota with qualifying health plans. SilverSneakers® Classic Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement and activities for daily living. SilverSneakers® Yoga SilverSneakers® Yoga will move your whole body through a complete series of seated and standing yoga poses. Chair support is offered to safely perform a variety of seated and standing postures designed to increase flexibility, balance and range of movement.

This class incorporates strength training, which has been proven to burn 100 extra calories throughout the day of training, because muscle burns more calories than fat. Weights and body resistance build muscle, add definition, tone, regain balance and you will become flexible and strong. Balance balls, low impact step, floor exercise and weights will be used. Core and back strengthening at every session. All exercise can be modified to fit your fitness level. Great workout to great music!

Noon-Time Cardio Circuit Lakes Area Recreation Auxiliary Room Instructor: Tammy Welle This class alternates a cardio workout with toning intervals. Cardio will consist of step aerobics and low impact aerobics. Free weights, exercise bands, and exercise balls will be used during toning intervals.

AQUATICS

OPEN SWIM Fall & Winter 2013/ 2014 Discovery Middle School Pool Schedule Lap Swim / Water Walking / Aquajogging Enjoy the benefits of exercising in the water. This unique exercise environment allows for an excellent workout, with non-jarring effects on the joints and muscles.

Open Swim For All Ages Children 12 and under will be required to pass a swim test in order to use the deep end of the pool and the diving boards. Swimmers must be able to swim one width of the pool, using front crawl, without stopping.

Children who are not potty trained are required to wear a swim diaper.

Children under 50 inches in height must be accompanied in the water by an adult. Life jackets, swimmies or water wings are permitted when children are kept within an arm’s reach of their parent.

On Sunday afternoons during open swim, patrons are allowed to bring in their own floatation devices such as air mattresses and inner tubes. tFloatation devices must be less than six feet in dimension.

American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course

ARC LIFEGUARDING CLASS

This course will provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over. The course content and activities will prepare participants to make appropriate decisions about the care to provide in an aquatic emergency and a medical emergency. This course includes certification in Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR & AED. Participants must be 15 years old on or before the last day of class.

Cost includes participant materials and supplies.

Participants will also be required to pass a prerequisite swimming skills test before being allowed to progress through the course. Prerequisite skills include: • Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds Location: Discovery Middle School, pool and classroom (an informational letter will be sent out prior to the first day of class) • Participants must attend ALL classes in the session for which they register.

• There must be a minimum of 4 people registered to hold class.

• NO refund will be issued for the course if unable to pass prerequisite skills.

OPEN SWIM: A WORD TO PARENTS Our lifeguards are highly trained and skilled. Their job is to assist in making our facilities a safe place to bring the family; however, they are not babysitters. Parents are expected to watch their children and to assist in enforcing the policies for the safety and enjoyment of all patrons. In addition, all children smaller than 50 inches in height must be accompanied in the water and supervised by a person 14 years of age or older.

BOWLING Junior Bowling Garden Center Lanes This is open to all kids Grades K – 6. Each week league play will begin at 3:30 p.m. and will include 1 ½ hours of on lane bowling instruction and a snack. All bowling will be completed at 5 p.m.

Winners to be recognized during half time of the Cardinal Varsity Game vs. Sartell at Citizen’s Field. 7:00 PM game time. Come try a Kick for Cash during half time for a chance to win $300.

Where: Behind Discovery Middle School, Alexandria Who: Boys and Girls ages 8 to 15 (Age as of Dec. 31, 2013) What: Punt, Pass & Kick Competition Kids (ages 8/ 9, 10/11, 12/13, 14/15) They will compete in three categories.

Punt- one football punted for distance and accuracy no cleats allowed Pass- one throw for both distance and accuracy Kick- one football kicked for distance and accuracy off of a tee *Each Participant needs a copy of a valid birth certificate (for age verification) * Participation is free of charge. * 1st place finishers are eligible for Sectional Competition. * Kids with the Top scores in the state compete at the Metrodome in December. *Sectional All-Around Champion’s score will be compared to the other Major League Football 1st Place AllAround Team Champions. Gymnastics 1910 Aga Drive, Alexandria MN 320-219-9724 Parent and Tot class: This is a semi-structured program for children 18 months or older (up to 3 1/2 years) accompanied by a parent or guardian at least 18 years old. This class is great for developing your child’s listening skills, learning how to take turns, and developing hand-eye coordination and other motor skills.

Little Leapers: This class is for 3 year olds. Participant must be potty-trained (no Pull-Ups) and will be introduced to bars, beam floor and mini tramp. In this program children will put their listening skills to good use!

Preschool: This class is for 4-5 year olds. Classes will include instruction on floor, beam, bars, vault, and mini tramp. Students will work on large motor skill development, stretching and balance.

Intro to Gymnastics 1: This class is for students ages 5 & 6 who are not able to perform a cartwheel to a feet first landing.

Intro to Gymnastics 2: This class is for students ages 7 & up who are not able to perform a cartwheel to a feet first landing.

Tiny Tumbler: By recommendation only. This class is for students ages 4 - 5 year olds and who are able to perform a cartwheel to a feet first landing and a straight-arm bridge.

Level 1: This class is for students age 5 & up and who are able to perform a cartwheel to feet first landing and a straight-arm bridge.

Level 2: This class is for students ages 6 & up and have mastered: forward roll, backward roll, handstand, cartwheel, kick-over off the mat, pull-over on bars walking up the mat, and forward, backward, and sideways walks on the low beam, and can walk unassisted on the high beam.

NEW! Tumble 4 Dance This class is specifically designed for dancers who want to learn tumbling skills to enhance their dance routines.

Advanced Class: This class is for gymnasts that have passed Level 3 or Pre-team and would like to continue working on more advanced skills only one time a week.

Pre-Team: By Recommendation Only. This class is for students ages 6 & up and have mastered: a tight locked handstand, handstand forward roll, handstand to bridge kick-over, round-off, with rebound, back handspring down the cheese mat unassisted, cartwheel on low beam, handstand on low beam, pull-over on bars w/straight legs, and a back-hip circle on bars.

Boys Beginner: This class is for 4 - 5 year old BOYS. Classes will include instruction on floor, beam, bars, and mini tramp. Students will work on large motor skill development, stretching and balance.

High School (Grades 7 - 12): Participants must have some high school experience.

Open Gymnastics: (Ages 6 and up) 1½ hours of supervised gym activity. *Waiver must be signed by parent/guardian at the first open gym student attends.

Preschool Open Gym: (Ages 18mo - 5) 1½ hours of mini gym activity. Children must be accompanied by a parent.

USAG Team Gymnastics: Levels 3-10 train and compete under all USAG regulations and skill levels.

Private Lessons: Set up on an individual basis.

These lessons are great for kids that would like to learn “that one” gymnastics skill they need for gymnastics, dance, cheer or any other reason! Call (320) 219-9724 for more information. Fee: $24 per hour Lakes Area Gymnastics requests parents bring their children into their class, wait for the coach to take their child before leaving, and come in to pick them up after each class. A WORD TO PARENTS It is very important to understand that all children acquire skills at different rates. Some children find it easy, while others take longer to make their bodies respond to what their brain is trying to tell them. Others may need to work on strength and flexibility. It should be expected that a child would take the same level class for about one year! A child should not feel pressured to move too quickly through the classes, especially if they are enjoying it!

For over three years the YMCA has had the good fortune to positively impact the lives of individuals and families through the breadth and scope of programs that focus on Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility.

The needs of our community have changed, and the YMCA and Lakes Area Recreation have and will remain a central means to meeting them. We’ve always known that positive change only comes about when we invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors.

The YMCA and Lakes Area Recreation are teaming up to offer comprehensive, progressive youth sports programming.

The YMCA and Lakes Area Recreation are pleased to announce a program agreement. Our staff will jointly develop the progressive program curriculum and will work together to provide quality programs in the area of basketball, football and baseball in the community.

In simplest terms, the YMCA will provide programming in baseball, football, and basketball in grades Pre-K through Kindergarten, and Lakes Area Recreation will focus on grades 1st through 3rd grades and beyond.

The YMCA and Lakes Area Recreation are committed to jointly programming and executing quality program curriculum for each sports program. The YMCA and Lakes Area Recreation will collectively market these programs through print and online materials to share program opportunities for kids and families in our community.

To register for YMCA programs, you will continue to register via the YMCA web-site or at the YMCA office, and for Lakes Area Recreation programs you will register via the Lakes Area Recreation web-site or in person at Lakes Area Recreation.
