fter an outstanding year at the Chamber in 2017 in living out our theme of Building Relationships, the theme selected for 2018 is Committed to Excellence. While we know, without a doubt, that excellence is present in the Chamber organization today, making improvements in processes, procedures and strategies to benefit Chamber members will lead to an even higher level of excellence.

This year’s theme is in line with our Key Chamber Initiatives identified in 2016 for the three year period of 2017-2020 (shown below) by the Chamber Board of Directors. We are well on our way to executing these three-year initiatives

more quickly than we believed possible thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Chamber staff, board members and the many committee members that help plan and execute the overall goals of our Chamber.

Excellence is possible when the right people are engaged and focused. The Chamber has the right people on staff and serving on the Board of Directors.

We confidently believe that 2018 is the year we will find even more success as an organization.

he Chamber’s theme in 2017 was Building Relationships. We focused on growing relationships with staff, members of the board of directors and committees, with our members and with other collaborative entities in the community.

The 2017-2020 strategic plan focus areas, noted on Page 4, revolve around collaborations, operational excellence, satisfied members and strategic programming. All of these focus areas are about building relationships.

They are also about striving for excellence.

As we head into 2018, our goal is to build an organization of excellence upon the solid foundation our relationships created. The theme chosen by board president Del Mari Runck and Chamber staff for 2018 is “Com-

mitted to Excellence.” We will strive for excellence in all programming and services offered to our members and the community.

I am very proud of the Chamber board and staff for what was accomplished in 2017, and can’t want to see what we can do together with our members and our community in 2018.

Thank you individually for the role you play in making this community the “ultimate destination to live, work, play and prosper.” In other words, a “Community of Excellence!”

2017 Highlights •Startup of a Collaborations Committee, involving City of Alexandria, Explore Alexandria Tourism, Alexandria Area Economic Development Commission, Alexandria Downtown Merchants Association, Alexandria Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce.

•Partnership with Alexandria Area Economic Development Commission with funding assistance from Explore Alexandria Tourism to create a new Alexandria Visitor and Relocation Guide for 2018.

•A total of $61,375 was kept local through the Chamber Bucks program this year!

•New Chamber programming: Off the Clock, Chamber 201, Leadership Alexandria 2.0, Health Care Roundtable, Government Affairs Team.

•Marketing improvements: New Chamber and Visitor Center sign, new logo, redesigned newsletter, website improvements, increased social media presence, improved communications.

•Internal improvements: Server/file cleanups, storage space updates, member database and billing improvements.

•Increased collaborations with the Runestone Museum in the areas of staffing and facilities.

•A total of 442 Relocation Packets were distributed to new residents or potential new residents.

Leadership Alexandria and Leadership Alexandria 2.0

T

he Chamber offers two programs to build and support community leaders – Leadership Alexandria (LA) and – new this

year – Leadership Alexandria 2.0.

LA is currently in its 26th year of building a stronger community one leader at a

time. The program is for individuals of any age serving in a leadership role or hoping to transition into a leadership role. Key takeaways

of the nine-month program include leadership skill development; personal growth and wellness; insight into local history, business, education and government; and connections with other business professionals.

LA 2.0, currently in its first year, is powered by GiANT Worldwide.

Participants learn more about their personal leadership style, learn to apply leadership tools, clarify communication, overcome challenges, achieve work/ life balance and more while gaining insight into how their leadership impacts the future of the community.

Ambassador Committee

T

he Ambassadors serve as an active communication link to cultivate and promote positive relationships between the Chamber and the business community.

The Ambassadors welcome new businesses to the community; recognize new owners, locations and reAmbassador of the Year: Scott Teaser, Massman, LLC

models for existing businesses; and attend ribbon cuttings and groundbreakings.

The group includes 20 community leaders from a variety of business sectors who have demonstrated outstanding interest and ability in promoting the business interests of the Alexandria Lakes Area.

In April, Chamber Ambassadors visited with Janeen Mitchell, Mike Karasch and Cindy Karasch of Alternative Senior Care, which opened an office at 315 Nokomis St., Suite 3 in Alexandria. With more than 80 employees, the company offers personalized services from light housekeeping to skilled nursing visits.

Business and Industrial Appreciation Day

A

nderson Funeral Home and Crematory was the 2017 Business and Industrial Appreciation Day (BIAD) honoree.

The honor, bestowed annually since 1984, is co-sponsored by the Alexandria Area Economic Development Commission and Alexandria Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce with the purpose of saying “thank you for being a vital part of our community.”

Recipients are selected based on the following factors: ~ Growth in number of employees and impact of the business on the job market. ~ Increase in sales and/or unit volume – an indication of continued growth. ~ Capital investment – an indication of commitment by the business to increase community capacity. ~ Community contributions – evidence of the investment of time, skills and resources to assist in community-oriented projects.

he Alexandria Area Young Professionals (AAYP) was established to “enrich the lives of the area young professionals in their 20s and 30s through networking, education and community involvement.”

The group offers opportunities for young professionals to meet other people in their age demographic, get involved in the community, learn more about the local area and enjoy social and networking opportunities.

While it falls under the umbrella of the Alexandria Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce, a person does not have to be a member of a Chamber member business to join this organization.

Duffer’s Delight

T

he Duffer’s Delight, held annually the first week in June, is the Chamber’s largest fundraising event. The 2017 event was held on June 5, a beautiful sunny Monday, at the Alexandria Golf Club.

The sold out event featured 37 teams/144 golfers and 41 sponsoring businesses and generated more than $13,000 for Chamber operating expenses.

It’s never easy taking an entire afternoon off from work, especially on a Monday, but the day always promises a quality golfing opportunity, a good meal, and lots of laughs.

he purpose of the Chamber’s Finance Committee is to establish financial parameters and guidelines for the Chamber to ensure its financial sustainability. The committee reviews financial

statements, develops and evaluates the annual budget, develops new financial policies as needed, and reviews existing financial and internal controls, policies and procedures.

akes Area Marketing, Inc. (LAMI) is a division of the Chamber. It is governed by Chamber lodging members and serves to promote the Alexandria Lakes Area as a tourist destination.

This is done through print, online and social media advertising, attendance at sport shows in a four-state area, a tourism website that features a Webervations online booking engine, and publication of an annual visitor’s guide.

Funding is generated from advertising sales in the guide, a grant from Explore Minnesota Tourism and from the Chamber.

Any Chamber lodging member is a member of LAMI and may be active on the committee, which meets monthly the second Wednesday. The chair is Greg Bowen, owner of Brophy Lake Resort.

The Chamber partnered with the Alexandria Area Economic Development Commission to create a joint Visitor and Relocation Guide. The guide is now available at numerous locations throughout the area. 55,000 copies will be distributed throughout the year at sports shows and job fairs in a fivestate area, to people requesting information about the area, and through other distribution opportunities. The “flip book” includes information about visiting the Alexandria Lakes Area on one side, and relocating to the area on the other side.

Government Affairs Team

T

he Chamber’s Government Affairs Team works to research and formulate legislative positions on issues that impact our area.

Upon Chamber Board approval, those positions are presented to legislators and government officials.

The committee promotes legislation that benefits Chamber membership and serves to make Alexandria the ultimate destination to live, work, play and prosper.

2017 priorities included supporting legislation that secured funding, created a grant fund and scholarship/loan forgiveness to address the shortage in professional caregivers; supporting legislation that would exclude the first $150,000 in property value from the state commercial-industrial property tax; oppose legislation that would repeal the post-Labor Day school start for elementary/secondary schools; support

inclusion of $4,000,000 in the bonding bill for the expansion of the Runestone Community Center; support legislation that allows Minnesota to conform to the federal REAL ID law; support legislation that would reform the Elderly Waiver Payment System; support legislation to establish a uniform statewide minimum wage and prohibit local minimum wage and leave of absence variations; support legislation that would clarify/modify Value Based Reimbursement Reform; and oppose the Working Parents Act. The committee is currently in the process of discussing priorities, reviewing pending legislative initiatives, and visiting with elected officials to convey local priorities.

he Chamber offers Relocation Packets to anyone moving or considering a move to the area.

Wenner honored as 2017 Friend of the Chamber

T

he Alexandria Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce proudly recognizes Carol Wenner as the recipient of the 2017 “Friend of the Chamber” award.

The award was established in 1990 to recognize an individual/individuals who has/have gone beyond expectations in giving of their time, money or influence to benefit the Chamber of Commerce and its members.

by Chamber members, board members or staff (current board members and staff are not eligible for the award, and the nominee does not have to be a current Chamber member).

was previously employed by the Chamber of Commerce, serving as the membership coordinator from 2004 to 2009, also serving as the staff liaison to the Membership Team.

During her time at the Chamber, Wenner brought on many new members, never with a sales quota in mind, but rather with the belief that Chamber membership could definitely serve and benefit those members.

She continued supporting the Chamber’s mission and purpose after accepting other employment in 2009. She has been an active member of the Chamber’s Membership Team since that time and was named the 2017 Membership Team Member of the year because of her dedication. In 2017 she was present at member visits every month, and personally mentored five new members throughout the year, inviting them to Chamber events and serving as a Chamber liaison. She also encouraged nonmembers to consider

joining the Chamber, providing them with information, asking the Chamber to contact those businesses and serving as a strong advocate for the Chamber and its mission and purpose.

Wenner is instrumental in having brought many new members into the organization over the years.

She is a 2007 graduate of the Chamber’s Leadership Alexandria program, and is a regular attendee at Chamber functions, including Wake Up Alexandria, Off the Clock, the annual celebration, spring and fall luncheons, and more.

The Friend of the Chamber Award was presented to Wenner at the Chamber’s Annual Celebration on Monday, January 29 at Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center in Alexandria.

Losing my father to cancer led to my passion of helping protect families with insurance and financial services. After graduating from Jefferson High School, I earned my Finance & Credit Management degree from Alexandria Technical & Community College (ATCC) in 2001. My career with State Farm began in 2004.

I’ve had great leaders who mentored my development, challenged me, believed in me, and helped me see anything is possible. I was a Senior Agency Field Specialist for 10 years. I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, MN Mortgage License, and the Chartered Financial Consultant Designation from The American College of Financial Services. In 2017, my dream of serving my hometown community as a State Farm Agent came true.

Community and volunteer efforts.

Being an active part of the community and giving back is important to me. I serve on the ATCC advisor board and support DECA. I am a member of Lakes Area Professional Women and serve on the Chamber of Commerce Membership Committee. My family delivers for the Jingle Bells Telethon and is active at church. I am leading The Kindness Revolution™, a non-profit organization with a mission of raising awareness of basic values, such as dignity, respect, courtesy, and kindness in the Douglas County community.

Summarize your career path.

I had the opportunity to get into the home care nursing line of work when I moved to Alexandria in 2008. Home care assists individuals to live in their home as long as safely possible by providing skilled nursing, physical/occupational/speech therapies and home health aide services.

In 2008, I began my career at Knute Nelson as a Home Care RN. In 2009, I was promoted to Assistant Director of Home Care, in 2012 to Director of Clinical Care, in 2013 to Director of Home Care, and in 2015 to Vice President of Home Care. I graduated from Leadership Academy through LeadingAge MN in 2014. Prior to joining Knute Nelson, I worked as a Medical Surgical Nurse for five years. I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Presentation College in Aberdeen, SD.

Leadership philosophy.

I’ve had the pleasure of working for an organization that has a culture built upon servant leadership principles. I believe serving others and encouraging them to reach for their goals/ dreams is the only way to truly experience success. It is essential to build relationships with your team, get to know them on a personal level, encourage them, trust them, challenge them, support them, celebrate successes with them, learn from mistakes with them, listen intently to them and watch them grow! I believe you must continuously work on improving and educating yourself to be an effective leader.

Family and interests.

I am married to Justin and we have three sons, ages 6, 4 and 2. We enjoy spending time together outdoors, playing games, running, jumping, reading, singing and laughing. I enjoy reading self-development books, shopping, exercising and laughing.

Summarize your career path.

I went to college at NDSU and obtained a degree in Accountancy with an emphasis in Criminal Justice. I worked for Alexandria Homes as an accountant until going to work at Unicel, where I started as an Accounts Payable Specialist, later became Accounts Payable Coordinator and lastly a Staff Accountant. After Verizon purchased Unicel, I was able to stay home with our girls for a year before applying for a job at United Way of Douglas & Pope Counties as an Accountant and Support Staff Specialist. I just started my eighth year and my job description has changed a little. I love the variety. No day is ever the same.

I have more of a quiet leadership style and try to lead by example. I value teamwork, trustworthiness, integrity, determination and respectfulness towards others. Being able to multitask and yet be in the moment when others need you is important. I always try to remain positive and look on the bright side.

Family and interests.

I am married to Eric and we have two girls, Makiah, 12, and Anika, 10. I also have four nieces and two nephews that I adore. In the summer you will find me outside any chance I get. We love to go to the beach and spend as much time as we can on the lake. I like music, playing cards and reading.

My kids would say I am known for making up random songs and singing them around the house.

Community and volunteer efforts.

I enjoy the community and try to get involved when I can. I am part of our praise band at church and help with Vacation Bible School. In 2016, I chaperoned youth to the National Youth Gathering in New Orleans. Helping with the high school youth group has been a blast. I also taught Sunday School and led Sunday School music. I am on the Community Education Advisory Committee and am a member of Alexandria Area Young Professionals. Our children love pets, so we’ve volunteered together at the Humane Society.

Summarize your career path.

From an early age I found a passion to work in healthcare. My grandparents and parents always held a strong work ethic and I respected them greatly for their respect and honor that they shared with each person. I worked at the Skilled Nursing Home in Long Prairie for several years and attended Alexandria Technical and Community College for their Nursing Program. I took a step away from healthcare briefly and found myself wanting to go back. I accepted a position at Ecumen Bethany Community in 2008 as the Nursing Staffing Specialist with responsibilities in HR. In 2016, the HR Director position became available and it’s been a great experience since. I am currently attending Rasmussen online to obtain my Bachelor’s degree specially focused in Organizational Leadership with plans to graduate in the next two years.

Family and interests.

Married to my husband, Matt for 11 1/2 years. We have two children: Kylie, 6 and Landon, 3. I enjoy spending time with family and friends, traveling when possible and spending time on the lake in the summer.

As a working mom and wife, she understands the pull of family/work and difficulty to find the balance. Using this first-hand knowledge, she is able to make work life improvements for our employees.

Summarize your career path.

I am a graduate of North Dakota State University and started working for Bell Bank in 2012. I became fully licensed as a Financial Advisor shortly after and started working as an Associate Financial Advisor with Bell Bank in Fargo, North Dakota.

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to move back to Alexandria in 2013 and was promoted to Vice President/Wealth Advisor in January 2017.

My leadership philosophy is pretty simple. I believe in going to work each day with a positive attitude and I always have a goal to make someone smile. I believe leading is about striving to become better than we are today, and helping everyone around us to become better as well. I believe being a leader is being a great listener and always following through!

Family and interests.

My wife Greta and I welcomed our first child in May of 2017.

Our daughter, Ginny, quickly became the highlight of our lives and we feel blessed each and every day. Outside of work and spending time with family and friends, I am an avid sportsman and enjoy hunting and fishing as time permits.

Cody has built great relationships with many community members and built a great name for himself professionally. Much of his success can be attributed to how active he is in our community.
