Message from the President ...

We are Better Together! is that we know and support our neighborhoods (home/business/community).

The Alexandria area’s thriving, diversified business community and nonprofit sector are supportive of each other. It was evident in 2015 when we first became part of this community but was even more obvious in 2020. From the outpouring support for those who lost their homes and/or businesses in the downtown fire, to the support towards our medical and rescue professionals, to wrapping ourselves around those who are facing the financial and mental crisis which COVID-19 created.

We are grateful to live in a community where supporting one another is not only a practice but an expectation. Tragedy is never welcomed, but it provides an unintended outcome – bringing us closer together with a common bond. It causes us to focus more attention on supporting friends, family, neighbors (home/business/community).

As I look back on all that happened in 2020, I believe more strongly than ever in these words.

The devastating downtown fire, COVID-19, racial injustices and political campaigns have changed us all in profound ways.

Five years ago, we moved our family to Alexandria. Like many who have moved their families Lynn Jenc into new communities, we 2021 President were filled with excitement, hope, anxiety and stress – all at the same time. We were excited to be a part of a community where we felt surrounded by positive, friendly souls wherever we went, whether it was school, medical facilities, retail establishments, religious activities and so forth. Message from the Executive Director ...

The positives of 2020 abound

It’s an exciting time to be living/ working in the Alexandria Lakes Area.

Our community is vibrant, growing, thriving.

That was the first line of my report for this publication in January 2020, before a pandemic rocked our world. Our community was flourishTara Bitzan ing and the Executive Director year before us was so full of promise. And then everything changed.

It would be easy to view 2020 as a disappointment, a disaster, a failure… but thanks to a year of living the theme chosen by 2020 Chamber Board President Robyn Snyder, “Be

Positive, Do Positive,” I worked hard to reframe things in a positive way.

I could easily write about all the things that went wrong in 2020 – about the struggles our business community faced, about how devastating a fire, a pandemic, a challenging political year were for our community. But that gains nothing but more negativity, anxiety, fear and anger.

So instead, we focus on the positives. Here are just a few that came out of a year we will never forget: A focus reset on family and “down” time. Stay-at-home orders, cancelled events and activities, distance learning equated to more family and home time. We needed this. The pace of our lives was out of control and even though we knew this, we seemed unable to slow things down. Maybe this was the

only way for that to happen. Social media postings give evidence that many happy memories were made this year that weren’t tied to being on the go constantly.

Learning and growth. In order to survive we had to learn to adapt by finding new ways to do things and by thinking outside our norms. We had to go outside our comfort zone, and as uncomfortable as that may be, it is a good thing. The adaptation and innovation (plus the grit and determination) displayed throughout our community by businesses, nonprofits, schools, the health care system and more was incredible!

New businesses and new residents. Despite what was going on, Alexandria still saw new businesses opening and new residents moving to town. This was still a location of choice for many people.

Compassion, concern and generosity abounded. From employers to employees, from business to business, from the community to the healthcare and education systems, from businesses and individuals to our nonprofit entities, needs were met, concern was shown, and compassion kept us going.

Many could argue that the challenges imposed this year by a pandemic – forced closures, stay-athome orders, layoffs, loss of revenue, health concerns, and so many others – simply made it impossible to be positive. But we need to shift our focus from those things to the good things noted above.

Another comment I shared in last year’s report was what another Minnesota Chamber director had said to me: “Your community seems so supportive and cohesive.”

That comment was eye opening for me. I guess when we live it, we take it for granted. I hadn’t realized that all communities aren’t like that.

Through the past year it was evident to me that we are unique, and that is why we are weathering this storm so much better than that particular community and many others across the state which have experienced numerous business closings.

There is a cohesive, collaborative, supportive atmosphere in our community – just one more reason why we are the “ultimate destination to live, work, play and prosper.�

And we want to see ALL of our businesses and organizations come through this and thrive again, because we know that we are all truly “Better Together.�

Message from the Outgoing President ...

Positivity was key to surviving 2020 My theme for 2020 was Be Positive, Do Positive. Little did I know just how much we would need to be reminded of this throughout the year!

But through it all, I heard and saw so many positive actions in our community, starting with the response to the devastation of our downtown by fire in February to dealing with all that Covid-19 brought to our lives.

Our Chamber continued Robyn Snyder to host programs, taking 2020 President on a new format but continuing to give members a chance to interact at a time when we needed to be around each other.

The staff, with assistance from the Chamber Ambassadors and Membership Team, personally called every Chamber member to see how we could be of service.

The staff is there to help, to answer questions, to be a resource for all our members.

As a community we have shown support to those businesses who are suffering, especially in the restaurant and entertainment areas. A debt of gratitude is given to all our health care workers and emergency personnel.

The stories of positivity I’ve read and the accounts I’ve witnessed truly warm your heart.

One online entity that has sprung to life this year is Helping Hands of Alexandria. The almost 6,000-member strong Facebook group helps those in need.

Whether just a simple picking up something to donations of major items, individuals and businesses join together to help. It is heartwarming to see this kindness and generosity.

As outgoing Chamber president, I want to encourage you to strive toward positivity and remember to Be Positive, Do Positive every day. It starts in our personal lives, spreads to our business roles and impacts our community as a whole.

Carl Vaagenes, CEO of Alomere Health honored as 2020 Friend of the Chamber 2020’s global pandemic challenged health care professionals around the world.

Fortunately, these individuals are taught to expect the unexpected and undergo many hours of training to prepare them for situations like this.

That was definitely the case in Douglas County, as the team at Alomere Health was trained and ready and wasted no time putting their protocols in place to care for their community.

While Alomere Health’s CEO Carl Vaagenes is quick to give credit to everyone within the organization but himself, his team is quick to send it right back, knowing that successes can only be achieved under strong leadership.

Vaagenes’ remarkable leadership and his commitment to not only his organization and team but also the overall community led him to be selected as the Alexandria Chamber’s 2020 Friend of the Chamber.

Vaagenes has been in the health care industry for 35 years, serving in four differ-

ent CEO positions. He has been at the helm of Alomere Health for the past nine and a half years.

He served on the Minnesota Hospital Association (MHA) board from 2009-2017, serving as board chair twice during that time. He also served on the American Hospital Association (AHA) Regional Policy Board for three years.

Vaagenes is no stranger to awards. He received the AHA Grassroots Champion Award in 2017 and the MHA Stephen Rogness Distinguished Service Award in 2019.

Locally, he has also served on the Unity Foundation Board of Directors, the Alexandria Area High School Champions Committee and is currently the board chair of the United Way of Pope and Douglas Counties.

He has been a strong supporter of the Chamber of Commerce through membership, sponsorship support, encouraging and allowing employees time to serve on the board and other committees, and par-

2020 has been filled with both joy and loss. A year that’s required us all to pull together in significant ways. A year that’s shown what a truly exceptional community this is.

All year long, you’ve supported our healthcare team in incredible ways.

Our community came together and made thousands of masks for our workers. Many of you have bought meals for our essential staff. And you did your part by staying home, sacrificing social gatherings, and wearing masks—to keep our team and our community safe.

As we look forward to the vaccination rollout, we see a light at the end of this long tunnel—but the availability of the vaccine does not mean we can lose focus on what we’ve been doing right now.

Shop local…do business local… support local… these are messages you hear repeatedly throughout every community, especially since the introduction of online shopping.

But these messages took on an entirely new meaning in 2020 as some businesses struggled to stay afloat due to the pandemic and the forced closures and limiting restrictions that came along with it.

The “support local” messages were voiced even louder and shared more frequently through many different avenues in 2020. Local residents heard the messages and, thankfully for our community, they listened.

More gift cards were purchased.

People were more conscientious of buying local vs. online. Many increased their donations to local causes and nonprofits.

People spent more time “exploring” local businesses and were pleasantly surprised at all they found right here in their own community.

Here’s proof. An incredible $96,514 in Chamber Bucks were purchased in 2020! That is an increase of $58,037 from last year’s total of $38,477. Those are dollars that will get reinvested back into this community, in which you all work, live and play.

While local support was strong all year, it definitely ramped up during the holidays. The months of January, February and March are typically the most challenging for some local businesses on any given year, and with COVID still a major factor, those months of 2021 may be their most challenging yet. So please, continue to shop local, do business local, support local all year long.

Pride of the Lakes is a community pride campaign created to educate area residents about the importance of taking pride in their community and supporting it.

Knowing young people play a major role in the future success of a community, the campaign was placed into the hands of marketing students at Alexandria Area High School.

Chamber’s 2021 legislative priorities focus on Minnesota’s economic recovery tax/fee increases, mandates, regulatory burdens and other measures that impede recovery. We support tax reforms and grants to provide hard-hit industries with immediate cash flow, enacting COVID-19 lawsuit liability protections for businesses, maintaining/enhancing connectivity (broadband), reorienting workforce development programs based on immediate needs, maximizing ability of schools to bring students safely back for in-person full-time instruction, providing one-time targeted childcare funding to meet needs of low-income and essential workers and providers.

Maintain benefit flexibility.

We are committed to providing the best workplaces for employees. We support employer flexibility in determining workplace wage, benefit,

scheduling and staffing decisions.

Employer protections must be recognized, addressed and implemented if Minnesota legalizes use of recreational marijuana.

Ensure high-quality, affordable health care. Health insurance is an important benefit allowing employers to attract and retain talent and ensure employees stay healthy and productive. We oppose additional mandates and taxes that drive up costs and instead urge legislature to improve coverage options. We oppose a government-sponsored public option which would lead to significant financial impacts on providers and hospitals, especially in rural areas, and increase costs for those with private coverage because providers will be forced to shift more costs to Minnesotans.

Transportation investment.

Current estimates indicate the state’s transportation revenues will decline by roughly $400 million in the current biennium due to reduction in travel and economic activity associated with the pandemic. We recognize that finding solutions to the near-term revenue shortfall will be difficult, however we must maintain, and if possible, increase general fund revenues dedicated to transportation.

Energy and environment.

Environmental sustainability and economic competitiveness, if done right, are not mutually exclusive. We support achieving MN businesses’ sustainability goals while keeping energy rates competitive. We must continue progress on permitting efficiencies and streamlining.

Alexandria on the map for customer experience

The Minnesota Retailers Association (MnRA) recognized an Alexandria business in 2020 for its attention to the customer service experience.

Past & Present Home Gallery, owned by Jeff and Lynelle Lanoue, was awarded the Customer Experience Award through the Minnesota Retail Champions program.

Wake Up Alexandria

was ‘something to look forward to’

Wake Up Alexandria has long been a popular Chamber event that offers twice monthly networking and business promotion opportunities.

The events are hosted at different member locations, offering an opportunity for hosts to showcase their facility, products, services and staff.

But like everything else, a pandemic came along and changed the way these events were conducted.

The Chamber received many requests from members to keep the events going. After cancelling some during the early weeks of the pandemic, they were started back up in person when possible, and continued virtually when gathering in person wasn’t possible.

The virtual events were well received by members, and attendance remained high throughout the year.

Wake Up Alexandria is held the first and third Friday of each month and is open to everyone in the community. A highlight of the event is the Pot of Gold drawing that occurs at the end.

This is sponsored by Chamber members who donate items, coupons, discounted services and gift certificates to add to its value. Every Chamber member is included in the drawing. If the member drawn is present, the business wins the Pot. Those employees utilize the prizes, with the hope that a business connection is made and a new customer/client is “won”! If a representative is not present, the Pot continues to grow.

“Controlling the Elements” in the Alexandria Area For Over 30 Years

The importance of connections The Chamber Ambassador and Membership teams are instrumental in connecting businesses.

The Ambassadors welcome new businesses to the community; recognize new owners, locations and remodels for existing businesses; and attend ribbon cutting and groundbreaking ceremonies.

The Membership Team recruits, welcomes, supports and mentors new members and supports the business community by attending ribbon cutting and groundbreaking ceremonies.

Both volunteer teams are made up of community leaders from a variety of business sectors who have demonstrated outstanding interest

and ability in promoting the business interests of the Alexandria Lakes Area.

The teams were challenged in 2020 with having to conduct many meetings virtually. This is not an easy way to learn about a business, but some creativity and video tours allowed for the important visits to continue and for connections to be made.

Each year, a member of each team is recognized for their dedication to their role. This year’s Ambassador Team Member of the Year is Bob Wolfe of Indigo Signs. Bob attended 28 of the team’s 32 visits. He has been a member of the team for the past seven years and is regularly

Young Professionals

The Alexandria Area Young Professionals (AAYP) was established to “enrich the lives of the area young professionals in their 20s and 30s through networking, education and community involvement.”

The group saw many new faces in 2020, and a common message shared was that young people moving into the area were at a loss on how to get connected because of the pandemic. With events cancelled, social gatherings halted and meeting places closed, they had nowhere to go.

Because of that, AAYP continued to meet throughout 2020, some virtual

and some in-person, to offer an opportunity for young professionals to meet other people in their age demographic and to learn more about the community.

While it falls under the umbrella of the Alexandria Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce, a person does not have to be an employee of a Chamber member business to join this organization.

Fire, pandemic interrupt leadership programs

The Chamber’s Leadership Alexandria (LA) and Leadership Alexandria 2.0 programs were challenged in 2020.

The nine-month 2019-20 LA class had only one session left (a day-long trip to the metro) plus their graduation celebration when the pandemic abruptly halted programming. It was hoped the sessions could be completed during the summer, but the metro tour locations remained closed to the public throughout the summer and fall.

Because of the restrictions imposed by COVID19, the 2020-21 LA program was cancelled. It is hoped that the 2019-20 class will be able to complete their final sessions this spring and that programming with a new class will resume in the fall of 2021.

LA 2.0 meets monthly for four months. The January session went off without a hitch. The February session was February 25 – the day a fire destroyed a portion of our downtown. Several attendees were involved in that situation and therefore missed the class. COVID-19 restrictions

caused the March and April classes to be halted.

After a seven-month delay, the class was able to complete the final two sessions in the fall.

Due to current restrictions, a new LA 2.0 class will not be held this winter, but will be considered in the fall.

LA has been going strong for 28 years and aims to build a stronger community one leader at a time.

The program is for individuals of any age serving in a leadership role or hoping to transition into a leadership role. Key takeaways of the nine-month program include insight into local history, business, education and government; personal growth and wellness; connections with other business professionals and more.

LA 2.0 teaches participants how to utilize leadership tools, clarify communication, overcome challenges, achieve work/life balance and more while gaining insight into how their leadership impacts the future of the community.

Signature events

to return in 2021

Two major events that the Chamber is involved in each year were cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic – the Duffer’s Delight Golf Tournament and Business and Industrial Appreciation Day. The Duffer’s Delight, held annually the first Monday in June, is the Chamber’s largest fundraiser, generating more than $20,000 for Chamber operating expenses. The event is held so that membership dues can be kept as minimal as possible.

Visitor Guide

makes Alexandria Lakes Area stand out The Alexandria Lakes Area has been a top tourist destination within the state throughout its history, thanks to its many lakes, lodging options and things to do.

While the pandemic definitely impacted the tourism industry locally, many people still found their way to the area. Many lodging entities reported a shift in their clientele, however, from out-of-state travelers to more in-state families looking for getaways closer to home.

Because of the pandemic, many tourism promoting entities chose not to publish new Visitor Guides for 2021. The Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, Explore Alexandria Tourism and

Alexandria Area Economic Development Commission felt it was more important than ever to continue promoting the area and its businesses through this popular publication, and the decision was made to create a new publication for 2021.

The new publication is again a flip book that features information on visiting the area on one side and information about relocating here on the other side.

The publication is available on newsstands throughout the Alexandria area, and is also sent throughout the U.S. and beyond via visitor centers, sports shows and consumer requests.

The 2021 Visitor and Livability Guide is now available! The “flip book� includes information about visiting the Alexandria Lakes Area on one side, and relocating to the area on the other side.

Visitor Center The Alexandria Visitor Center is located at 206 Broadway in the Chamber of Commerce/Runestone Museum building.

The Visitor Center offers an abundance of information for people visiting the area as well as for local residents, including local, regional

and state maps; trail maps, lodging and dining information, arts and entertainment activities, business and personal services, housing and real estate information, medical and senior services, education services, economic development information and more.

Did you know?

The Chamber offers Relocation Packets to anyone moving or considering a move to the area.

The packets include information about local education, health care, law enforcement, transportation, dining, shopping, entertainment, activities, services and a variety of other opportunities in the area.

The packet also includes the community economic development profile and a copy of the

Alexandria Visitor and Livability Guide.

These packets are sent out upon request and made available free of charge for all Chamber members to use when recruiting or hiring people from outside of the area. In 2020, 230 relocation packets were distributed.

The Alexandria Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce and the Echo Press are pleased to bring you the Top 5 Under 40, recognizing five outstanding professionals younger than age 40 in the Alexandria Lakes Area. Nominees were judged on their professional achievements, community involvement and overall depth of qualities. They were honored at the Chamber’s Annual Celebration on January 18.

Alexis Wagner Age: 28 Summarize your career path.

I grew up in La Crescent, MN and enjoyed working at a daycare in high school. At Luther College in Decorah, IA, I had experiences with students with special needs and discovered I loved helping them grow and learn. I student taught in the Alexandria area and got my first job at Lincoln Elementary as a special education teacher. I have worked with students in grades 2-5 with various disabilities for the last 6 years. I enjoy working at Lincoln because as a team we find the best way to help our students be successful and I get to help students learn new skills and become more confident.

I have participated on our Building Leadership Team and have been a mentor for first year teachers. Last Spring, I received my Master’s Degree in Special Education from Bemidji State University.

Family and interests.

My family includes my husband, Ryan, and dog, Sophi. I enjoy playing volleyball and golfing. In my free time, I enjoy reading books and making craft projects and decorations. In the summer, we spend a lot of our time boating, fishing, and camping with our family.

KaLee Mohrman Age: 34 Summarize your career path.

I started working in healthcare when I was 16 as a CNA near my hometown of Grandin, ND. It was then I realized my passion for serving the elderly population and decided to become a nurse. I went to school for my LPN at North Dakota State College of Science (NDSCS) in Wahpeton. I then worked at a clinic in Grand Forks for two years, mostly in Family Practice. I moved to Fargo and worked on building a preventative healthcare program for Essentia Health. I graduated from NDSCS with my RN degree in 2012. I then worked at Essentia Health on the Medical Surgical Unit for two years. At that time, I met my husband who resided in Alexandria.

His mom was in the ICU at Douglas County Hospital, dying of a terminal cancer diagnosis. The first time I met her, she was on hospice services. I saw the tremendous impact hospice had on the entire family. It was then I knew I wanted to become a hospice nurse. I moved with my daughter to Alexandria and was hired as a hospice case manager with Knute Nelson Hospice. In 2015 I was promoted to Clinical Nurse Manager, managing hospice referrals. In May 2018, I was promoted to Director of Knute Nelson Hospice – the role I currently hold. Our hospice program has grown by nearly 100 percent in the past 2 years.

Community and volunteer efforts.

I am a member of the Minnesota Network of Hospice and Palliative Care Training and Education Committee and a member of the local Opioid Task Force. I have volunteered for Habitat for Hu-

I strongly believe in contributing to your community. I have been a firefighter for several years and am also a first responder and Emergency Medical Response instructor. In addition, I have been on the West Central Area School Board for six years. I seek opportunities to volunteer and have loved passing this down to my children who enjoy spending their time at the fire hall rolling up hose or at a benefit cleaning tables.

I made a career change after the 2009 Verizon acquisition. I started with Alexandria Industries in March 2011 as an Office Cell Specialist at the precision machining facility. I accepted the Office Manager position in 2019. I am responsible for office processes, human resources, accounting, purchasing, and product scheduling. I handle employee recognitions and celebrations, support the employment needs of employees, handle the ERP system implementation and operation, plan and schedule product, plan and purchase materials, and maintain accounting processes and reports.

I’ve been involved with our United Way committees for several years, when I worked at Unicel and currently at Alexandria Industries. I am involved in the Fishing for a Cure ice fishing challenge at Alexandria Industries. I lead youth groups at Calvary Lutheran Church, mostly elementary level, and assisting with middle school. I started doing this with my daughter when she was in 2nd grade. She is now an 8th grader. I teach Junior Achievement for 2nd graders in the area also.

Leadership philosophy.

I believe in being present, to serve others with guidance and assistance so they have the necessary tools to achieve their goals and dreams.

Family and interests.

I have a husband of seven years – Billy, and three kids: Sammi - 8th grade, Kody - 2nd grade, and Cayden - Pre-k. We enjoy exploring Minnesota with many camping trips in the summer.
