The Alexandria Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1907. For more than 110 years it has served as a network of business, organization and individual members working together to improve the economic wellbeing of the entire community.

he Alexandria Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce has strived to help and support our thriving community for an amazing 112 years.

This commitment has in no small part helped shape and develop the opportunities and advantages Alexandria sees today. The incredibly apt theme for 2018 was “Committed to Excellence”...a theme the Chamber staff, board of directors, and the many committee members embraced and strove to continually uphold. We are seeing results, and the commitment to this GREAT theme will continue.

The selected theme for the Chamber in 2019 is “Neighbors Helping Neighbors.” This is a concept that resonates on many levels. It is about caring individuals lending a hand when needed, or providing a shoulder

to lean on, an ear to listen, or a heart to understand. It is about employers and business leaders setting good examples for their employees, for the students of our community, and for the customers that utilize their goods and services. It is about local businesses supporting one another and recognizing that a community thrives when all the diverse sectors are successful. “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” is a theme we can all get behind!

he Chamber’s theme in 2018 was Committed to Excellence. Our staff, board of directors and committee members took this to heart, striving every day to ensure our services, programming and commitment to our members was the best it could possibly be.

The 2017-2019 strategic plan focus areas, noted on Page 3, revolve around collaborations, operational excellence, satisfied members and strategic programming.

All of these focus areas are about building relationships (2017 theme), about striving for excellence (2018 theme) and about collaborating and helping our neighbors (2019 theme).

“Neighbors Helping Neighbors” is the 2019 theme chosen by incoming board president Greg Bowen, owner of Brophy Lake Resort and Bowen Contracting. Greg

has a servant’s heart and a passion for this community that rivals that of someone who has lived here their entire life. While he works hard to be successful in his business endeavors, his main focus is always on “what’s best for everyone.” He wants the entire community to thrive, and his theme is a perfect fit for the final year of our current strategic plan that puts collaborations and working together at its core.

In 2019, I challenge each of you to intentionally reach out to your neighbors with offers of help and support to ensure that Alexandria continues to be the “ultimate destination to live, work, play and prosper.”

Ambassador Committee

T

he Ambassadors serve as an active communication link to cultivate and promote positive relationships between the Chamber and the business community.

The Ambassadors welcome new businesses to the community; recognize new owners, locations and remodels for existing businesses; and attend ribbon cuttings and groundbreakings.

The group includes 20 community leaders from a variety of business sectors who have demonstrated outstanding interest and ability in

Ambassador of the Year: Todd Emmons, Innovative Builders promoting the business interests of the Alexandria Lakes Area.

Business and Industrial Appreciation Day

H

illtop Lumber was the 2018 Business and Industrial Appreciation Day (BIAD)

honoree.

The honor, bestowed annually since 1984, is co-sponsored by the Alexandria Area Economic Development Commission and Alexandria Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce with the purpose of saying “thank you for being a vital part of our community.”

Recipients are selected based on the following factors: Growth in number of employees and impact of the business on the job market. Increase in sales and/or unit volume – an indication of continued growth. Capital investment – an indication of commitment by the business to increase community capacity. Community contributions – evidence of the investment of time,

Laven honored as 2018 Friend of the Chamber

T

he Alexandria Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce proudly recognizes Shari Laven as the recipient of the 2018 “Friend of the Chamber” award.

The award was established in 1990 to recognize an individual/ individuals who has/have gone beyond expectations in giving of their time, money or influence to benefit the Chamber of Commerce and its members.

Nominations can be made by Chamber members, board members or staff (current board members and staff are not eligible for the Shari Laven award, and the nominee does not Friend of the Chamber have to be a current Chamber member).

Laven is the CEO of Viking Bank in of college and has worked in every Alexandria. The Friend of the Chamber Award was presented to Laven at the Chamber’s Annual Celebration on Monday, January 28 at Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center in Alexandria.

Relocation Packets

T

he Chamber offers Relocation Packets to anyone moving or considering a move to the area. The packets include valuable information about local education, health care, law enforcement, transportation, dining, shopping, entertainment, activities, services and a variety of other opportunities in the area.

The packet also includes the community economic development profile and a copy of the Alexandria Visitor and Livability Guide.

These packets are sent out upon request and also made available free of charge for all Chamber members to use when recruiting or hiring people from outside of the area.

In 2018, 288 relocation packets were distributed through the Chamber office, through local employers and through the mail.

he Alexandria Area Young Professionals (AAYP) was established to “enrich the lives of the area young professionals in their 20s and 30s through networking, education and community involvement.”

The group offers opportunities for young professionals to meet other people in their age demographic, get involved in the community, learn more about the local area and enjoy social and networking opportunities.

While it falls under the umbrella of the Alexandria Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce, a person does not have to be a member of a Chamber member business to join this organization.

The Visitor Center

T

he Alexandria Visitor Center is located at 206 Broadway in the Chamber of Commerce/Runestone Museum building.

The Visitor Center offers an abundance of information for people visiting the area as well as for local residents, including local, regional and state maps; trail maps, lodging and dining information, arts and

entertainment activities, business and personal services, housing and real estate information, medical and senior services, education services, economic development information and more.

Leadership Alexandria and Leadership Alexandria 2.0

T

he Chamber offers two programs to build and support community leaders – Leadership Alexandria (LA) and Leadership Alexandria 2.0.

LA is currently in its 27th year of building a stronger community one leader at a time. The program is for individuals of any age serving in a leadership role or hoping

to transition into a leadership role.

Key takeaways of the nine-month program include insight into local history, business, education and government; personal growth and

wellness; connections with other business professionals and more.

LA 2.0 is powered by GiANT Worldwide. Participants learn to apply leadership tools, clarify communication, overcome challenges, achieve work/life balance and more while gaining insight into how their leadership impacts the future of the community.

Duffer’s Delight

T

he Duffer’s Delight, held annually the first week in June, is the Chamber’s largest fundraiser. The 2018 event was held on June 4, a beautiful sunny Monday, at the Alexandria Golf Club.

The sold out tournament featured 33 teams/145 golfers and 45 sponsoring businesses and generated more than $20,000 for Chamber operating expenses.

It’s never easy taking an entire afternoon off from work, especially on a Monday, but the day always promises a quality golfing opportunity, a good meal, and lots of laughs. Government Affairs Team

T

he Chamber’s Government Affairs Team works to research and formulate legislative positions on issues that impact our area. Upon Chamber Board approval, those positions are presented to legislators and government officials.

The committee promotes legislation that benefits Chamber membership and serves to make Alexandria the ultimate destination to live, work, play and prosper.

2018 priorities included enhancing Minnesota’s tax competitive-

ness, ensuring consistent statewide laws, full dedication of transportation related revenues, and strengthening Minnesota’s medical procedure price transparency laws.

The committee is currently in the process of discussing priorities, reviewing pending legislative initiatives, and visiting with elected officials to convey local priorities.

akes Area Marketing, Inc. (LAMI) is a division of the Chamber. It is governed by Chamber lodging members and serves to promote the Alexandria Lakes Area as a tourist destination.

This is done through print, online and social media advertising, attendance at sport shows in a four-state area, a tourism website, and publication of an annual visitor’s guide.

Funding is generated from advertising sales in the guide, a grant from Explore Minnesota Tourism and from the Chamber.

Any Chamber lodging member is a member of LAMI and may be active on the committee, which meets monthly. The chair is Greg Bowen, owner of Brophy Lake Resort.

Supply Chain Analyst, 3M

Summarize your career path.

I graduated from Rutgers University in New Jersey with a B.S. in Supply Chain Management & Marketing and relocated to Alexandria two years ago for my career with 3M. Before 3M I was a Logistics Specialist for the consumer-packaged goods company Church & Dwight. At 3M, I’ve worked on numerous cost-saving projects in support of key initiatives for the Abrasive Systems Division. Examples include a project with international locations resulting in approximately $60,000 annual savings for 3M Alexandria and a project to scrap unused inventory with approximately $44,000 saved. I completed the 3M Optimized Operations manufacturing and supply chain development program, which included Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Training, statistics and project management. I became ISO 9001 certified as an internal auditor for 3M and work closely with multiple international countries.

I believe that to be a truly impactful leader you must genuinely care about your peers as well as your community. Successful teamwork is built on courage, trust and integrity. You must have a passion to help others grow and prosper, while giving them someone to confide in and look to in times of need. I relocated to Alexandria in March 2017 for my position at 3M from New Jersey and have grown to love Minnesota! Daylon Faber Age: 38 Summarize your career path.

My career started as a teacher because I wanted to be able to influence and teach kids. This start as a teacher proved to be helpful as I eventually was asked if I were interested in the insurance business. I was drawn to the idea of being able to help and educate others in a whole new way and eventually was able to open my own insurance agency in Alexandria, my hometown. Since my time in the insurance business, I have been recognized as the Farmers Union Top Producer for New Brokerage in the state of Minnesota and I achieved the Farmers Union Summit Award for being one of the top agents in the state of Minnesota.

Tyler Golberg Age: 35 Summarize your career path.

For five years I worked in the oil field overseas. There was a lot of downtime so I was able to take online website development classes. I honed these skills by working on homespothq.com, an online web app for managing maintenance around the house, with my wife, Rachel, and two other partners. The site was featured by Real Simple magazine, lifehacker, Bob Vila, SimpliSafe, and the Kim Komando show. It was a cool experience that fueled my passion for web design and strategy. When I moved back to Alexandria in 2013, a friend asked for help with their company’s website. That led to another project and then another. It kept snowballing and a few months later CYBERsprout was born. I kept it as a side hustle for a couple years but then decided to go fully into CYBERsprout two years ago. Since then we’ve grown the company to seven team members, worked in 12 different states, and completed more than 150 projects. In 2016, Minnesota Business Magazine was kind enough to include me in their 35 under 35 young entrepreneurs.

Community and volunteer efforts.

I’ve been a member of the Alexandria Rotary club since moving back to Alexandria. That organization has helped me connect with a variety of groups, including Common Hope, El Amor De Patricia, and the ATCC Foundation board.

I’ve also been happy to participate as a member of the Communication Arts advisory board, BCE advisory board, and Splash Pad Vision Group.

Brittney Thoreson Age: 31 Summarize your career path.

I knew I wanted to be in the healthcare field even before enrolling at Concordia College in Moorhead.

I was drawn to the ever-changing pace and excitement of the industry. In 2009, I graduated from the Healthcare Management Program and have been working in the senior living industry for 10 years. I was hired as the Housing Advisor by Knute Nelson in 2011.

Two years later, I was offered a Therapy Supervisor position in Knute Nelson’s Home Care division, was later promoted as Director of Hospice, and then Vice President of Hospice. In August 2018, I was blessed with the opportunity to return to housing. Today I serve as Vice President of Housing where I oversee four residential senior living communities including Grand Arbor and Nelson Gables in Alexandria, the health care management for the Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls, and our newest residential community, Crystal Brook Senior Living in Park Rapids.

Community and volunteer efforts.

I am a board member of The Written Gift, a non-profit that promotes use of Advance Directives. I am also an Advance Directive Facilitator. I am involved with the Task Force on Opioid and Abuse Reduction and am a past member of the Standards of Practice Committee of the Minnesota Network of Hospice and Palliative Care. I am a graduate of Knute Nelson’s Leadership Academy,

Vice President of Housing, Knute Nelson the Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Alexandria, and a current Fellow in the Leadership Academy through Leading Age Minnesota.

Leadership philosophy.

My leadership philosophy is to be a servant leader. I want to always support those around me in their own leadership growth and allow them the tools to achieve their greatest potential. Building relationships with my team, in my opinion, is the key to a leader’s success. I love to continuously learn and grow so I can continue to move the bar higher to achieve excellence and not remain status quo.

Family and interests.

My husband, Jay, and I live in Alexandria and have two boys: Kael, 6, and Crosby, 3. As a family, we love to spend time outdoors on the lake and traveling. My hobbies include cooking, exercising and shopping.

Brittney’s compassion for others is evident as she takes the time to listen to others and always follows through on her commitments.

I have been fascinated with the process of how laws are made, interpreted, and applied to our daily lives since middle school. I majored in Political Science at St. Cloud State, attended Willamette University College of Law in Oregon, was accepted to the Minnesota Bar in 2011 and hired as an Associate Attorney at Tillitt McCarten Johnson & Haseman in Alexandria. In 2013, the firm restructured as McCarten Law Firm and in 2015 I was promoted to Partner. In 2014, I was elected Vice President of the Douglas County Bar Association and served as President in 2015. I work in Family Law, Criminal Defense, Civil Litigation, and Estate Planning. I am passionate about my work and am grateful to work in this great community with a mentor like Paul McCarten.

Leadership philosophy.

Given the necessary resources, people are intrinsically capable of accomplishing anything. I believe it is a leader’s purpose to provide others with the resources they need to accomplish their goals. In my experience, ideas, motivation, information, or a particular action are the common tools that lead to achievement. When we genuinely believe anything is possible, we automatically act and live in a way that inspires others to believe it too.

Family and interests.

I was born and raised in Alexandria, as was my wife, Kristen Haabala Wiener.

Kristen is President/CEO of Raw & Company. We have a 2-year old son, Thomas, and a 9-year old Husky/Lab, Bella. We enjoy playing golf, going to the lake, traveling, reading, and collecting vinyl records.

Community and volunteer efforts.

I’ve had the opportunity to watch Andrew develop into an outstanding young professional, leader, and individual with high moral values, a strong Christian faith, with devotion to his family, friends and community.

I represent low-income clients on behalf of Legal Services of NW Minnesota, volunteer with a Law Clinic hosted by West Central Minnesota Communities Action, with the Father’s Resource Program, and with the AAHS Mock Trial program. In 2015, I joined the Douglas County Friends and Foundation board, serving as Vice President since 2016. Following the sudden passing of my life-long friend in 2016, I assisted in founding the Matt Kjelland Memorial Foundation to raise money for scholarships, mental health research and support. In 2011 I founded West Central United Basketball to create opportunities for out-state youth and serve as President/Director/Coach. I also volunteer as an Alexandria Youth Basketball Club coach.
