rrrrr. Does it seem like winter lasted forever this year? We Minnesotans have had to endure a hard winter, which makes the return of summer to the Alexandria lakes area especially welcome. And, although summer may not last long, we know how to make the most of it!

From the first hint of spring to the drop of the last leaf, life in these parts kicks up a notch as we head for the outdoors to breathe in the fresh air and take in the beauty that surrounds us.

Formerly Awake the Lakes, the festival includes the Memorial Day parade and ceremony to honor our troops. Rain or shine, we feed you and

entertain you, getting you ready for the summer days that are just on the horizon.

Love the water? Then head for one of the many lakes for swimming, skiing, boating or fishing. Prefer to stay on dry ground? There are nine golf courses for you to choose from. Or skate, hike or bike along the Central Lakes Trail. There are many state, county and city parks where you can enjoy camping or maybe a picnic.

For baseball lovers, the warming days bring a chance to head to the ballparks to watch our favorite teams, including the Blue Anchors, who make their home at Knute Nelson Memorial Park.

It’s fun for the whole family and you may even see a professional player in the making.

There’s so much to see and do in the Alexandria area and we encourage you to take the time to get to know us a little better.

Exceptional entertainment

F

or more than 50 years, Theatre L’Homme Dieu (TLHD) has presented exceptional and entertaining live theater in the Alexandria lakes area.

TLHD partners with national and regional theaters to present five productions throughout the summer.

Opening the season will be a special performance by The Fabulous Armadillos, one of Minnesota’s most popular tribute bands, on June 17.

The Fabulous Armadillos, an 8-piece band of professional musicians which has been playing themed shows to sold-out audiences since 2006, make their Alexandria debut in the pre-season concert event.

With a song list that spans from rock to motown, each theater show is a sit-down, multi-media, storytelling event perfect for a summer night.

That special performance will be followed by the Broadway hit, The Philadelphia Story, about Tracy Lord; a headstrong and spoiled daughter of the privileged. Tracy finds herself growing interested in a reporter covering her society wedding. Their moolnight swim is discovered and the love triangle eventually gets straightened out – but not without some good laughs!

Season ticket packages are now available for the 2014 season and can be purchased online at www.tlhd.org.

Cost for a season pass, that includes one admission to each performance at any time is $85, and a flex pass, which includes five admissions to be used in any combination at any time is $100.

Daycare is also available for the Saturday matinees this year.

The box office opens one hour before showtime.

oin music lovers on Sunday, May 18 at Carlos Creek Winery for the annual Music at the Winery concert featuring the Central Lakes Symphony Orchestra, an organization more than 50 members strong from the communities of Alexandria, Brandon,

Carlos, Fergus Falls, Garfield, Glenwood, Miltona, Nelson, Osakis, Villard and Vining.

The orchestra, led by Jefferson High School Orchestra Director Brad Lambrecht, will perforom Dance of the Comedians from The Bartered Bride, Smetana; Cello Concerto in D minor, Lalo; and Symphony No. 4 in D minor, Dvorak.

THE ORCHESTRA is a community organization based in Alexandria that is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in West Central Minnesota by enriching the lives of audience members by bringing more opportunities to hear beautiful orchestral music, providing an opportunity for musicians to participate in performing serious music with a symphony orchestra, and giving back to the community through donations and student scholarships.

HE MADE IT HAPPEN Jefferson High School orchestra director Brad Lambrecht had a vision that became a reality in 2009 when a non-profit organization was formed, and he has been instrumental in bringing music to the area since that time.

Black Comedy this spring

R

esidents and visitors alike can enjoy the variety of arts events presented throughout the year by the Alexandria Area Arts Association (AAAA).

This season’s spring comedy will be Black Comedy by Peter Shaeffer, a hilarious oneact performance where the action supposedly in the dark is illuminated and when the lights are to be on, the stage is dark.

Lovesick and desperate, sculptor

Brindsley Miller has embellished his apartment with furniture and objects d'arte "borrowed" from the absent antique collector next door, hoping to impress his fiancee's pompous father and a wealthy art dealer, Schuppanzigh.

The fussy neighbor, Harold Gorringe returns just as a blown fuse plunges the apartment into darkness and Brindsley is revealed teetering on the verge of very ripe farce. Unexpected guests, aging spinsters, errant phone cords and other snares impede his frantic attempts to return the purloined items before light is restored.

Golden Dragons performing

I

n the final event of the year, the Central Lakes Concert Association will present the Golden Dragon acrobat group, world famous for their time-honored tradition that began more than 27 centuries ago.

The Golden Dragon Acrobats blend lavish costumes, awardwinning acrobatics and traditional dance together with a bit of ancient and contemporary theater to creat a specatular performance for all ages.

The Golden Dragons are recognized throughout the United States and abroad as the premier Chinese acrobatic touring company of today.

Adding to the diversity of entertainment in the Alexandria lakes area, the Central Lakes Concert Association brings beautiful musical performances right to the community.

Formed in 1983, the first season included four concerts and has expanded to include reciproc-

ity with the Sauk Centre Concert Association, as well as Ortonville/Milbank, Brainerd, Fergus Falls and Wadena, giving patrons an enormous variety of entertainment from September through May. The association offers an expanded program of quality concerts, affordable to the general public.

A season membership, which includes tickets to all concerts in Alexandria and the five other

communities involved in the CLCA, is just $40 per adult, or $90 for a family membership.

Students receive a membership for just $15.

All Alexandria performances are held at Jefferson High School.

The annual summer kickoff returns to its roots

A

fter several years as Awake the Lakes, Alexandria’s kickoff to the summer seaon is returning to its roots as Ole Oppe Fest.

The festival, which was begun as a thank you to the community after donations poured in to renovate Alexandria’s most famous landmark, Big Ole, became an annual event and

eventually morphed into Awake the Lakes. This year, though, the program returns to its roots.

Dubbed Ole Oppe Fest (Oppe means “up” in Norwegian) celebrated Big Ole’s new paint job and sturdy body.

Stock car racing, 5K races, fish fry, breakfasts, parades, church services, carnival, farmers markets, baseball and motorcycle runs will all be included in the celebration.

This year’s event will be held Friday-Monday, May 23-26 come rain or shine, so head on down to Big Ole Park at 2nd Avenue and join in the festivities.

Riding to provide homes for Habitat for Humanity

Y

ou’ll hear them as they rumble along – dozens of Harley-Davidson motorcycles as the eighth annual Motorcycle Ride to Provide takes place on Saturday, June 28 in conjunction with Alexandria’s Awake the Lakes celebration.

The ride, which raises funds for Habitat for Humanity of Douglas County, begins at noon at

Apol’s Harley Davidson and will traverse through Douglas County along a 115-mile route.

Riders will stop in Evansville for a lunch of grilled brats and chips, and the ride will conclude in time to join in the excitement of Rib Fest.

Riders will gather at Apol’s Harley-Davidson at 10 a.m. and will depart for the ride at noon, following registration.

Come celebrate the 70th anniversary of “D” Day

I

t’s back! The Red Willow Arts Coalition is proud to announce the resurrection of the Hangar Dance at the Chandler Airport in Alexandria, commemorating the 70th anniversary of “D” Day. This event will be held Friday, June 6 from 7-11 p.m. at the original hangar and will feature “Jazz Dot Combo,” an exciting jazz group made up of young adults playing swing music from the 40s and 50s.

Previously featured in the Courthouse Lawn series, the group is directed by former Alexandrian John Herdan.

Admission price of $12 per person includes a summer meal of chicken and potato salad, cole slaw and roll provided by The Corral Saloon and Eatery. Tickets are available at Elden’s, Trumm Drug and Carlson Music.

There will also be a cash bar and a great night of dancing from 8-11 p.m.

A big attraction in Alexandria is Northwoods League baseball action, a summer baseball league comprised of teams made up of top college players from across the nation.

Alexandria’s team, the Blue Anchors, recently went through an overhaul, but the action is still the same.

You never know what future Major League Baseball All-Star might be on the roster. The Northwoods League has produced several through the years,

and the Alexandria franchise is no exception, most notably St. Louis Cardinals player Allen Craig.

The franchise began in Alexandria in 2001 and plays in the family friendly venue of Knute Nelson Memorial Park. Attendance through the years has grown, with the Alexandria team pulling in 29,654 spectators last season.

So, if you’re looking for an evening of entertainment under the summer skies, head for a Blue Anchors game.

erhaps one of the most eye-catching “landmarks” in Alexandria is Big Ole – a 28-foot tall Viking statue that stands at the north end of Broadway.

Born in 1965, the Viking has become a much-respected resident in the lakes area.

The idea for the statue began in January of 1964 when North Star World’s Fair Corporation in Osseo began working on an addition to the Minnesota display for the New York World’s Fair.

The display was to feature the historical Kensington Runestone in an animated scene titled “Minnesota, Birthplace of America.” The new item to coincide with this display was the 28-foot, four-ton Viking statue.

Big Ole was completed by Gorden Displays of Minneapolis in April of 1965 and was transported to New York just in time for the World’s Fair.

Big Ole arrived at his home in Alexandria in front of the Runestone Museum in December of 1965. Now, almost 45 years later, he still stands strong.

KENSINGTON RUNESTONE It’s a controversy more than 100 years in the making: Did an immigrant Swedish farmer find a buried rock in 1898 that contained an ancient runic message carved by Viking explorers 100 years before Columbus landed in America? Or is the whole thing a hoax, perpetrated by the farmer or some other prankster?

A large replica of the Kensington Runestone is located at a small, wayside rest. Visitors can read the inscription and take a photo by the replica. The replica is located in a small park at the east end of 6th Avenue in Alexandria.

Jacket World Record Day on Saturday, May 17.

The goal of Ready, Set, Wear It! is to raise awareness about the importance of wearing a life jacket.

On that day, boaters will gather across the world to inflate their own inflatable life jacket or to wear an inherently buoyant life jacket, helping to heighten awareness of different life jacket types and boating safety issues and go for a world record along the way.

This one-day event is part of the North American Safe Boating Campaign (Wear It!), a yearlong effort that brings together boating safety partners across the U.S. and Canada to promote safe and responsible boating, including voluntary wear of life jackets.

How to stay safe while boating at night Boating at night can make even familiar waters unrecognizable. Visual depth perception is lessened, and lights from the shore can be difficult to distinguish from those on the water.

NIGHT BOATING TIPS Don’t take shortcuts or try to navigate from memory. It’s easy to lose your bearings at night. Follow the main channel when possible.

Be familiar with your boat. This will allow you to focus on interpreting water markers instead of fussing with your controls.

Slow down. Because distances are harder to judge at night, you will

need more time to distinguish various types of lights and take action.

Listen. Sounds most often precede objects, such as another boat’s engine or sound signals, an Aid’s bell or gong, or noises from shore.

Note: Sound travels far over water.

Navigation lights are required to be turned on from sunset to sunrise and during periods of poor visibility, such as rain and fog.

Turn off all lights that could interfere with, or be mistaken for, navigation lights.

• Most resident anglers – 855,000 of them in fact – are from urban areas. The remaining 474,000 resident anglers live in Greater Minnesota.
