Alexandrians dominate Resorters Derby Jesse Hafdal topped the field of 33 in the annual event Call it home field advantage. Alexandria golfers claimed four of the five top spots in the 2010 Resorters Golf Tournament Derby Tuesday night. The big winner was Jesse Hafdal, 20, of Alexandria, who outlasted a field of 33 contestants to claim the top prize. Derby host Brian Vangsness made the golfers work for their glory. The players’ first obstacle on the first hole was trying to hit the ball while on their knees. Those with the best scores were allowed to advance and two additional golfers were given a second chance in a playoff. This time, the players had to hit the ball with their backs turned to the hole and with their left hand on the left side of their body. The
two that made it closest to the hole were also allowed to advance. The next task was to hit the ball from behind a tee, through a narrow passage of trees in deep grass up a slope. Those who advanced were then blindfolded with a towel when trying to make it to the next hole. The playoff after this task was to hit the golf ball with a racquet. The final challenge: The competitors were spun around in circles while keeping their foreheads pressed against a baseball bat. The players had 10 seconds to collect themselves and hit the ball after the bat spin. In addition to Hafdal, the other Derby winners were Casey Vangsness of Alexandria, second place; Grant Hanson of Cottage Grove, third place; Bennett Black of Alexandria, fourth place; and Chris Sholts of Alexandria in fifth place.
It was all fun and games – and a bit of skill – during the annual Resorters Golf Tournament Derby last night. The host of the event, Brian Vangsness (above), enjoyed blindfolding the players with a towel while they tried to tee off from one of the holes. The Derby began with a challenge that brought the competitors to their knees while trying to swing the club from the No. 1 tee. Another fun Resorters tradition – the Putting Tournament – will take place at 6 p.m. tonight on the Alexandria Golf Club practice green. Golfers can register for the event up to the time the putting starts. The participants will be gunning for Tyler Whiting of Alexandria, who has won the single-elimination event for the last two years.
