EDUCATIONAL
APPROACH At Echo Horizon School, we value character education as highly as we do academic rigor. We believe that the education, care, and nurturing of the elementary age child is best accomplished in our Pre-K to 6th grade setting. Nationally recognized for our ability to leverage technology that optimizes and creates multi-dimensional learning, Echo Horizon’s teaching emphasizes character education to facilitate social and emotional growth, critical thinking, autonomy, resilience, and social responsibility. ear Echo Horizon parents and friends,
I am grateful for the opportunity to share the 2014-15 Annual Report with you to recognize the philanthropic support from our School community and the achievements of our faculty and students. While the Annual Report tells the full story, here are a few highlights from the year: • W e hosted a team of 25 educators from Brisbane, Australia as part of the Apple Distinguished School Educators tour in May. After touring classrooms where they spent time talking with our students and teachers, our visitors heard from faculty on ways we use technology to give our students a global reach as well as a global audience. • In December, six faculty members from Nanjing School for the Deaf, also an Apple Distinguished School, visited Echo Horizon to see our extensive use of technology for deaf and hard of hearing students in a mainstream environment. As there is no other school for DHH students in China, our Nanjing colleagues were very interested in learning from their US counterparts. • O ur students had a very busy and successful year as well! They were active participants in a variety of extracurricular activities, including the California Student Media Festival, Los Angeles County Science Fair, Pinwheels for Peace Project public art installation in Culver City, and a book drive to help build a library in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In each of these activities and service initiatives, our students are engaged in the community. • A nnual events brought joy and camaraderie to the life of our school community—Winter Program, Arts Showcases, Earth Day, Ballona Creek Clean Up, Celebration of Books, Halloween Carnival, Grandparents & Special Friends Day, and a very successful Movie Night!
• 2014-15 brought much fundraising success with 100% participation from the Board of Trustees, 83% from faculty and staff, and 76% from parents—and a record setting Spring Affaire that raised funds for the School as a whole as well as faculty professional development. • L ast and certainly not least, we participated in a thorough and comprehensive CAIS/WASC accreditation process that resulted in a full accreditation status for seven years—a strong affirmation of the high caliber of teaching and learning that take place every day at the School. In the spring of 2015, we laid the foundation for a new vision for Echo Horizon. This new vision is based on the knowledge that we must prepare our students to not only be receivers of information, but also to become knowledge creators, ready for the 21st century. Moving forward, this will inform and guide our future planning initiatives. At the heart of our success is your partnership and ongoing support. For this, I am exceptionally grateful and extend my thanks on behalf of those who most benefit from your many contributions—our students and teachers. Thank you for making Echo Horizon such a warm and inclusive community where students thrive and grow! With warmest wishes for the holiday season,
Martha T. Schuur Head of School

ear Echo Horizon School community, 2014-15 has been a landmark year for Echo Horizon School that involved a comprehensive reaccreditation process, new Board leadership, and a purposeful partnership with the Head of School on strategic initiatives for the future.
With pride and gratitude we acknowledge your many philanthropic contributions to Echo Horizon. When parents, trustees, faculty and staff, grandparents, alumni parents, and friends join together—great things happen! This year saw a very healthy growth in fundraising, most notably in our record-breaking Spring Affaire. We gratefully acknowledge your many gifts of time and resources to support our school community. We’d like to take this opportunity to extend our deepest thanks and appreciation to our outgoing Board Chairperson, Nora Wendel (Preston ’02), for six years of leadership on the Board of Trustees as Chairperson and for 15 years of service to the Board. A special vote of thanks to Andy Simon (Logan ’08, Juliana ’10) for his five years of service to the Board. Andy served on several committees of the Board, including the Long Range Strategic Planning Committee. We’d also like to recognize Parent Association Co-President Jeff Bynum for his dedication and commitment to the School as an ex-officio member of the Board. Last but not least, we’re thrilled to welcome new trustee Gary Weisserman, Head of School at Milken Community Schools. Gary brings with him a deep understanding of independent schools and the importance of high impact student learning. We’re looking forward to Gary’s perspective and voice as we delve into our future planning initiatives. The Board looks forward to its continued partnership with Martha to enhance the impact and outcomes of an Echo Horizon education. Our deep-seated commitment to ensuring a strong future for the School is driven by the sole objective of preparing our students as creative, innovative, and thoughtful 21st century citizens. Thank you again for making Echo Horizon School your philanthropic priority. It speaks volumes about the strength and resolve of our community. With gratitude,

THANKING Board Chairperson Nora Wendel During Nora Wendel’s tenure as Chairperson, Echo Horizon undertook a strategic planning process, completed a successful capital campaign, celebrated its 30th anniversary, and welcomed a new Head of School. We have all benefitted from Nora’s gracious presence and unwavering passion for the School, and are immensely grateful that she has agreed to remain on the Board as a Trustee.
WELCOMING New Trustee Gary Weisserman Gary Weisserman has been at the forefront of educational innovation and excellence for more than two decades. Prior to becoming Head of School at Milken, Gary served as Chief Academics Officer at Scheck Hillel Community School in North Miami Beach, Florida. Previously, Gary had served as founding Head of School at Oakland Early College in Michigan, a hybrid “early college high school,” for grades 9-13. Gary brings extensive experience in the creative use of digital technology, and he has lectured around the world on web-based technologies, instructional gaming, and educational reform, and has worked extensively with UN-based organizations, NGOs, and international organizations to create digital projects for social change.

ear Echo Horizon community and friends,
We continue to lead in our field as one of the preeminent, internationally recognized mainstreaming deaf education programs. Thanks to our faculty and staff, our accomplishments this year exemplify our farreaching influence, our ability to service beyond the school community, and the enhancement of our reputation. Here are some of our highlights. Tours to show how we develop and implement our program and services: • Students from John Tracy Clinic/Mount Saint Mary’s University DHH Graduate Program • Students from California Lutheran University’s Education Specialist Credential DHH Graduate Program • Audiologists from Los Angeles County Office of Education In-services provided by our highly trained Echo Center faculty: • A workshop on utilizing technology for language and aural development for John Tracy Clinic graduate students • Opportunities for John Tracy Clinic graduate students to shadow and learn first-hand how to effectively implement mainstream support • A presentation to California Lutheran University graduates on utilizing technology for language and aural development • Support from DHH teachers for schools to which our students transitioned Visitors from across the country and around the world: • Emilio Alonso-Mendoza, CEO of Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, along with past Echo Horizon Board of Trustee Ken Levinson, toured the School to learn about our innovative DHH mainstream program. • Administrators and educators from Nanjing School for the Deaf in Nanjing, China visited with us for two days to learn how we incorporate technology into our curriculum. The group toured, visited classrooms, met with the faculty, and attended a workshop led by Echo Center faculty on how we utilize technology for language and aural development. The connection came through our Apple Distinguished Educator Elaine Wrenn; several of our parents participated by providing translation and information support. • Hearing Health Foundation CEO Claire Schultz toured the School to learn more about our cutting-edge program. • Smith College/Clark Schools for Hearing and Speech sent two externs from their graduate DHH teacher training program to spend two weeks with us to expand their knowledge of auditory-oral maintream. In December 2014, Echo Center participated in a Nonpublic School Certification triennial site review by the California Department of Education, successfully meeting all criteria with flying colors. Our students, through your support and generosity, are given the ultimate gift every day—the gift of opportunities.
