FOREWORD The name Re-Gen- a combination of words: regeneration, germinate and root (Gen means root in Chinese)- is more than just a name. In many ways, it represents us and our journey (growth) on the path of architecture. Community Architecture brings students of different batches, races, and countries together. Together, they work to bring interesting projects to life which they give back to the community at the end. The project theme for Community Architecture 2021 is Urban Farming. Following this theme, we held some events, challenges and also made structures to help promote urban farming. This magazine is a journal that recorded the journey which allowed us to grow as individuals and how we inspired others in the community to encourage urban farming.

this project, 'Gen' acts as a foundation of our first step to urban farming. We can refer to "Gen" as us, the "New Generation". ''Gen'' will be the one who leads the world to achieving productive farms, healthy communities and economies.

GERMINATE

Germination is the process where the seed starts to grow. Once the roots are developed, the little seed breaks the path and grows upwards. This process is like our journey as architecture and interior architecture students, it is our first step to achieving our dreams as professional designers. We are 'Germinating'.

REGENERATION

Regeneration is referred to as regenerative agriculture. By using regenerative agriculture, the soil will not be destroyed. This way of planting helps maintain the nutrients in the soil. This boosts our farming productions which in turn boosts our economy and 'fertilizes' our community.

DESIGN

LOGO DESIGN HOW DOES THIS LOGO REPRESENT US?

using a combination of two different

colours which are green and yellow with a smooth texture. The logo has a green-coloured leaf on the right of a long yellow curve.

Sitting below the long curved yellow line lies the word RE-GĒN.

DESCRIPTION

Starting from the left side, the yellow organic shape forms a curve facing downwards before curving upwards, forming a long organic-shaped curve. The organic shape is derived from the letter R, which is the first capital letter of our theme; RE-GĒN. On the right side, in between the curve, lies a green leaf-shape that represents growth.

The design of this t-shirt is inspired by illustration style. The front of the t-shirt is printed with our unique logo and name Re-Gen. The overall t-shirt looks clean and refreshing with Illustration Style placed on the back of it. I added many illustration vectors to bring out our theme for this year; Urban Farming. For example, I used cartoon characters planting vegetables to represent us, whereas building elements bring out the "city feel". In order to make the overall look vigorous and achieve a visually balanced effect, three main colours are used to embellish

T-SHIRT DESIGN In Week 2, all students were assigned a separate task to design our Community Architecture 2021 Tshirt. The designs of the students demonstrates their

ingenuity,

unique

interpretations of the theme “RE-Gēn”. The top 10 designs were then chosen by the design team members and further voted by everyone through a poll. Our initial colour scheme was avocado shades but after discussion with our instructors, it the “Illustration” style we are going with. Ang Qiao Ting and Lim WanJing later on came up with 4 Tshirt designs and the final choice of our official Tshirt design was made through online voting.

FURNITURE WORKSHOP

FURNITURE WORKSHOP This semester, the Community Architecture and Furniture Workshop courses were integrated to form the final assignment for Community Architecture. The Furniture Workshop course supplied students with a variety of knowledge regarding the art of woodworking. The first assignment supplied students with sufficient skills and knowledge on how to properly handle hand tools as well as the proper attire that one should wear when woodworking. The second assignment allowed students to explore their creativity and ingenuity in designing a phone stand with additional functions to the design. The base design for each students' phone stand included two different pieces of wood cut at a one-quarter height of said wood.

This cut ran from one end of the wood to its midpoint and the gap itself was made a size according to how thick our wood piece was. From there on out, the students used different techniques and came up with many different unique designs such as watch holders, hooks for hanging keys and rings, so on so forth.

Since the final assignment for our Community Architecture 2021 and Furniture Workshop courses are integrated together, students were to make one cube each according to provided dimensions and use those cubes to create a modular design related to Urban Farming. There were a total of 6 groups, each bearing a total of 10 or 11 members. The assignment allowed us to use different materials in order to improve the quality, strength, and durability of the structure.

WEEKLY MEETINGS

WEEKLY MEETINGS Our Community Architecture 2021 course was conducted online due to the unimproved pandemic situation. We used Zoom, Padlet, Miro, and many more to communicate with each other. Although we could not interact with our friends face to face, the experience was still fantastic, everyone progressed very well and had fun.

In the first week, we chose the committee members and separated our classmates into members falling under the different committees. Alongside that, six groups were developed under our Furniture Workshop course for our Modular Cube Design Competition. The leader of each team assigned tasks to their members and the project kicked off successfully.

The modular cube design was discussed and designed amongst members of each individual group. In Week 3, we presented our proposals to lecturers of Community Architecture, Furniture Workshop, as well as lecturers from other courses, and they gave us tips on how to improve our designs.

Every week, we had a fortnight report presentation to show

progress

from

different

committees

and

their

members as well as a tutorial session for modular cube design developments. By the third week, T-shirt design, merchandising designs, event planning and more had all been settled. Progress was fast considering this is a short semester with a limited time frame.

We had several activities that took place such as a few Talk Series, a 28-Day Plant Challenge, Gather Town, and more.

Not only did everyone have fun in these events, but we also learned many things from each other. We grew closer to one another after every meeting and without noticing, an invisible bond had secretly developed between us.

By November, our project slowly came to an end. The modular cube design had been finalised and presented to the public. We enjoyed seeing everyone's creativity and hard work pay off.

Overall, the Weekly Meetings have been motivating and inspiring. We are thankful for our lecturers' guidance and every single soul that put their effort into their projects.

In order for RE-Gen to achieve its goals, numerous meetings had been conducted between the Community Architecture Design Team and Event Team members in order to finalize innovative yet creative merchandise inspired by our theme for this year, Urban Farming, that could not only subsequently attract more buyers, but also promote urban farming. Everyone in the Design Team actively involved themselves in designing the RE-Gen merchandise- which includes the RE-Gen (Regeneration, Germinate, Root) Tote Bag, RE-Gen Bucket Hat as well as four varieties of Laser Cut Coasters- which were then finalised by the Committee members and an online voting session within the students of Community Architecture.

After all the designs and publicity processes were said and done, the pre-order for the merchandise kicked off on the 30th of October through online platforms due to the unimproved pandemic situation. Prices ranged from RM5 to RM25 for the standalone merch, and RM45 to RM60 for exclusive combos. The merchandise was advertised on various social media platforms, such as Instagram and Facebook, not only to promote RE-Gen but to raise sufficient funds for the resources and materials needed to support this Community as well as for the events hosted by the Event Team.

URBAN TECH FARMING

As a feature on the 1st Talk series, Mr Francis Chuah, also known as the founder of Urban Farm Tech, was invited to give an educational talk on Green Technology Farming. Urban Farm Tech (UFT) is a social enterprise founded in 2016 that provides urban farm solution systems to develop and construct urban farming systems. Did you know that food travels a great way before reaching our homes, and the present food system is overly reliant on imports worth RM52 billion in 2018? To maintain a high degree of food security, the country must have a self-sustaining food system, which Urban Farm Tech practices. Urban Farm Tech believes that youths are the ones that can change the future of Malaysia's agriculture industry, especially after the pandemic raised awareness in food security. Therefore, Urban Farm Tech is

actively involved in Urban Farm Projects with schools and the community in order to realise this goal.

As students of UCSI University, we were fortunate enough to be given a chance to be educated by an expert. The talk was held online through Zoom and Facebook Live, with about 70 participants. Mr Francis covered a lot on innovative agricultural concepts and technology, such as vertical farming, IoT smart farms, and Aquaponics, as well as the importance of urban farming where he briefly explained the meaning of it. Most, if not all, of the students were deeply engrossed and interested in Mr Francis' talk to the point where a stream of questions never stopped flowing during the Q&A Session where Mr Francis offered exceptional answers that students can take away from. It was indeed a fruitful session given by Mr Francis Chuah.

As a feature on the 2nd Talk series, Mr Izzaham and Ms Nancy, the president and secretary of the Kebun Komuniti USJ 12, were invited to give an educational talk on Community Gardens. Kebun Kominiti USJ 12 was founded in the year 2013 and is one of the most successful of the 70 different community gardens located in Putrajaya today.

Us UCSI University students were fortunate enough to be given an opportunity to be educated by an expert. The visit to the Kebun Komuniti USJ 12 was held on the 24th of October 2021 where 11 students and 1 lecturer visited the site to gain on-site experience. The talk was held online through Zoom and Facebook Live, with about 60 participants. Mr Izzaham and Ms

Nancy gave lots of useful information gained from experiences, such as how

to start a community garden, the objective of being part of a community

garden, and the challenges faced in order to maintain the community garden,

such as the maintenance required, the location, types of plants, planting methods, types of soil, the potential pests and how to overcome them using organic methods, the different types of tools, the different types of germination and even the basic rules when running a community garden.

The talk was very enjoyable for most, if not all, participants as it was held in a very friendly and lively manner. After the talk, a Q&A session was held with

many different types of questions being asked and following this was a

Kahoot quiz held where the top 3 winners from the quiz won wonderful prizes relating to farming.

As a feature on the 3rd Talk series, AR Yasmin Rahman, an architect at QWA Architects, was invited to give an educational talk on Farming in the City.

architectural practice based in Cyberjaya, Selangor. Established in 2017, the firm strives to formulate exceptional spatial solutions for the ever-demanding issues in the built environment. AR Yasmin is a person who portrays her love for humanitarian values in her work. She gravitates to discussing crucial worldly subjects such as food sufficiency, social mobility, and ecosystem sustainability.

We were blessed to be given an opportunity to be educated by an expert. The

03 talk was held online through Zoom and Facebook Live, with about 65

participants. AR Yasmin covered a lot of useful information gained from experiences, such as learning more about theoretical work in architecture &

urban design related to farming whereby organic farming is not just about growing food, it is about growing a community. The talk ended with a fruitful Q&A session where different kinds of questions asked were answered exceptionally by AR Yasmin. After the talk session, the event was continued

through a virtual Agritecture (Architecture + Agriculture) Exhibition held in Gather Town to explore studio works from different universities such as Taylor's University and UTAR, Urban Farming Talk Series pictures and posters, 28 Day Plant Challenge pictures, as well as

When the modular structure is connected more and more, one can receive a huge beautiful natural view while walking through the pathway.

Return To Play is a modular structure that allows kids to have a fun area to play and observe the urban farming system consisting of a vertical farm and rainwater harvesting. This structure helps kids develop their physical health. They can even rest, read, or store their belongings in this structure.

Ve-Lourish is a vertical wall garden for farming vegetables.

Each cube contains individual plants pots, and the cubes themselves come in a variety of LED cubes, Drawer cubes, and Regular ones. With a built-in drip irrigation system, urban farming is made easy, and eye-catching, for the user.

SECRETARY First of all, it was a great honor to be elected as the Secretary of Community Architecture. I had a pleasant time with all the members. In these past few weeks, we went through a lot of ups and downs but these helped us bond with each other and lead this Re-Gēn Community Architecture.
