New stadium, new coach, new era Lindheim receives warm welcome from administration, current players and coaching staff

F

or the last 31 years, El Camino’s football program won games while developing men as both players and students under the leadership of coach John Featherstone.

But with Featherstone’s retirement at the end of the 2015 season, a three-month coaching search began filled with speculation over who would follow in his footsteps.

That speculation turned to excitement when Santa Monica Col-

lege head football coach Gifford Lindheim announced he was taking the job at EC via Twitter.

(Gifford) did a great job at Santa Monica, obviously good enough to have the opportunity to take over here,” Featherstone said of his successor. “I’m going to be anxious.

It’s going to be a learning process, but I’m sure he will get everyone bought in real fast. I will always have football in my blood, so I am very excited for the start of next season.”

Lindheim previously worked as co-defensive coordinator under Featherstone during the 2008-09’ season at EC. Coach Eugene Engle, who served as offensive coordinator last

year, is confident in Lindheim as a leader.

“He is really engaged with the players,” Engle said. “He is strong in building relationships and bringing people together.”

Engle said he’s also looking forward to seeing the level of competition that Lindheim brings.

“We love when the players go out there and earn their spots,” Engle said.

Lindheim said that with the support of the staff and administration, and the opening of the new $40 million football stadium, El Camino College was a destination job for him.

“I’m am thrilled to be joining this campus community, and I am

excited to help our team reach its full potential,” Lindheim said.

Lindheim is making his return to EC after a seven-year coaching stint at Santa Monica College, while also coming off one of the best years in SMC football history.

Lindheim led the Corsairs to an undefeated season in 2015, topping it off with a blowout victory over Victor Valley College in the Southern California Football Association American Division Championship game.

He also led SMC to five consecutive conference championships, while earning five conference coach of the year awards.

culture was valued by the administration.

“We inspire our athletes to be students first so that they can leave this college within two years, that is what we have brought (Lindheim) in here to do.” Dean of Health Science and Athletics, Rory Natividad said. “He has already proven that he can win and I trust that he can continue that legacy at El Camino College. This really is a great time to be a Warrior!”

Lindheim’s staff back at SMC also spoke highly of his character.

Tim Kaub, who coached with Lindheim for four years at Venice High School and again as the offensive coordinator at SMC for the last three seasons, believes EC has

found the right person to bring its storied football program back to the top.

“I have come across a lot of coaches and (Gifford) by far cares the most about the kids and his staff more than anybody I have ever worked with,” Kaub said. “He is going to bring a culture of winning that will get all of the athletes bought in real quick.”

Meth man in bushes

March 25, 10:10 a.m. Officers on patrol in Lot L saw a man lying in the bushes. When the officers made contact with the man, he was found to be in possession of a glass pipe with methamphetamine.

The officers issued the man a citation.

No pictures, please

March 23, 4:10 p.m. Officers responded to the Life Sciences Building for a disturbance call.

When officers arrived, a woman told the officers that a man in her class was taking pictures of her on his cellphone. The man admitted to the officers that he was taking photos of her and allowed the officers to see the photos. The man agreed to delete the photos off of his phone. The man did not commit any crime and he apologized to the woman.

March 22, 11:45 a.m. An officer responded to the police station for an assault report. A man and woman told the officer that two other women approached them on campus and started to yell obscenities at them. Everyone involved knew each other previuosly. All of the students that were involved were referred to the Director of Student Development.

The man and woman didn’t want to press charges.

Sorry, not interested

March 21, 4:30 p.m. A woman in the MBA Building called police about a man in her class that was trying to pursue a relationship with her. The woman told the man that she wasn’t interested. At the time, the man wasn’t giving any unwanted attention and the officer told the woman that if the man does start again to let her instructor know and call police.

Professor allegedly hacked by student Roy Garza News Editor @ECCUnionRoy An El Camino student allegedly hacked into a professor’s computer in an attempt to access personal files on Feb. 29.

The professor, technology instructor Patricia Vacca, said she was in the middle of teaching a class when someone remotely took control of her computer and tried

to upload her personal files to the cloud.

Vacca said she was able to halt the hacking process, and recognized a photo of one of her students when looking through the computer’s files.

The incident was reported to Dean of Business, Virginia Rapp, as well as Student Development Director Greg Toya. She was also assisted by Network Services Supervisor Claudio Vilchis.

Both Toya and Vilchis were contacted for interview, but were unable to comment without approval from the Community Relations office.

The case is under investigation

by El Camino Police Department, and Sgt. Dal Toruno said charges could be brought forward soon.

“We have a person of interest that we’re looking into, and we’re discussing possible charges with the district attorney,” Toruno said.

Toruno said the DA is busy with other cases so it has delayed the process, but should know of any charges by March 28.

As of March 29 however, the DA’s office still had not processed the case.

Cyber crimes are included in California state law.

California Penal Code 502 says that anyone who “Knowingly accesses and without permission alters, damages, deletes, destroys, or

otherwise uses any data, computer, computer system, or computer network in order to either (A) devise or execute any scheme or artifice to defraud, deceive, or extort, or (B) wrongfully control or obtain money, property, or data,” can be charged with a felony. *Visit eccunion.com for updates on this story.

EC Student government elections to begin next week Students can cast their votes in the Student Activities Center, Library Lawn from April 4-6 Caleb Okoye Staff Writer @ECCUnionCaleb The 2016 Associated Student Organization elections are next week and with the list of qualified candidates posted, campaign preparations have begun.

The list is posted in the Student Activities Center, and has a total of 18 candidates.

There are 17 offices available, but five are taking write-in votes only.

Current ASO vice president Stephanie Pedrahita gave her thoughts on the upcoming elections and her work on the elections committee.

“I am so excited for the elections this year,” Pedrahita said.

“We have a strong group of mem-

bers running and we are working 110% in the elections committee to make sure the elections have a fantastic turnout of students.”

On Tuesday, April 5, candidates will rally from 1-2 p.m. on the Activities Center Outdoor Stage.

The candidates will be given the time to introduce themselves and give a short speech. They will also be given time to debate with their opponents.

Voting for each position takes place on April 4-6 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Library Lawn, and from 4-6 p.m. in the Activities Center.

Election results will be posted in the Student Development Office on April 8.

Football players eager to work with Lindheim Jed Fernandez and Matthew Sandoval Opinion Editor and Staff Writer @ECCUnionJed @ECCUnionMatthew The recent hiring of Gifford Lindheim as the the new head coach of the El Camino football team has grabbed the attention of current players, as well as prospects coming from high schools and other junior colleges.

Lindheim was hired after his perfect 2015 campaign at Santa Monica College that led to a state championship. He looks to bring in top recruits and replicate his success to EC. “I want to build a great competitive environment here like I did in Santa Monica,” Lindheim said. “I want people to come from all over to play here at EC.” Freshman tight end Erik Henneman played for last years’ undefeated SMC football team, and hopes to transfer to EC fol-

lowing Lindheim for another run at a conference championship. “(Lindheim) is a great guy and handles everything in a professional manner,” Henneman said.

“He is always on his job and is a really active coach. I think he will have everyone mesh together just fine and be ready to compete for a championship.”

The hire has already had an effect in the National Division Central League, with players looking to transfer to EC. Conor Miller, quarterback for Mt. San Antonio College last season, hopes that transferring to EC will give him the best opportunity to further develop as a player.

“His resume speaks for itself, (SMC) was struggling when he arrived, and he turned that program into one of the best in the state,” Miller said. “I believe that he can do the same at (EC) because of his values, character and the way that he cares for his players.”

The team is currently preparing

for summer workouts, where new players will take the field with the rest of the team to determine the starting roster.

There appeared to be four or five players doing quarterback drills at Tuesday’s practice, and Lindheim was asked about the competition.

“The competition is only gonna get juicier,” he said. “We encourage competition at every position; the more competitive you are, the better you get.”

Lindheim’s addition to the team brings high expectations and excitement for the storied program, and signals the start of a new chapter for Warrior football.

“No one can replace coach Featherstone and all he has done for this program,” Warriors wide receiver Chad Washington said. “I didn’t know anything about (Lindheim), but he says that he likes to win, and me and my teammates love to win. I think he is going to be a good fit.”

Historic performance earns forensics team national title Alba Mejia Staff Writer @ECCUnionAlba El Camino’s forensics and debate team won their second ever community college national championship in the National Parliamentary Debate Association tournament at Cal State Long Beach from March 19-21.

Mason Jones and Isaac Curtiss, EC’s current top forensics team, placed 7th in the tournament out of 164 teams participating.

Debate coach Joseph Evans spoke about the significance of the team’s achievement.

“This is the best El Camino has ever done at this particular event,” Evans said. “El Camino has won this award only one other time in its history.”

EC’s young competitors had to win round after round in order to advance through the tournament; as opposed to their last competition, The NPTE, where the team lost one round but still advanced.

“It’s great that EC won this award because this year we were the youngest debate team at the tournament,” Curtiss said. “Mason and I kept winning during elimination rounds until the quarterfinals.”

Curtiss also spoke about his old teammate, former EC student Arielle Stephenson, who placed second in the competition.

“It was really good to see her go this far. She didn’t win but she is a person who helped Mason and I get to the quarterfinals,” Curtiss said.

EC had additional teams participate in the tournament and they did fairly well.

Jamilah Bazille and Kelsea Posantes finished with an even record and were the 4th best first-year team of the tournament, according to the press release.

A third pair from EC, Zara Andrabi and Curtis Wang, also advanced to the elimination rounds and finished in the top 64 teams, according to the press release.

“We don’t know how we ranked overall in the competition, but it was really fun,” Wang said. “We talked about a lot of current event issues meaning that we really have to prepare beforehand and do research on various topics.”

Andrabi and Wang both competed with the EC forensics team for the first time at this tournament.

“As partners we work pretty well,” said Andrabi.

“As a whole team there’s a lot of love, we’re like a family.”

In both the NPTE and NPDA tournaments, EC’s forensics team was able to break community college records and Evans compared it to something you’d see in March Madness.

“It’s like if a community college qualified for the basketball March Madness tournament and did really well,” Evans said.

El Camino band, In Walked Five, brings “unique sounds” by mixing music genres Trent Ledford

W

hether they are in band practice or playing a show, they love to mix sou nds in order to create music that is fresh to their listeners.

In Walked Five is a jazz, hiphop and soul band that was created in El Camino last year by five students who are all majoring in music.

The band met on campus through the music program.

It took them about a year to come up with the name, “In Walked Five.”

“We went through six different names and finally there was a song called ‘In Walked Bud’ by Thelonious Monk that we all liked, so I said, ‘Hey guys let’s just call ourselves In Walked Five,’ and the guys finally agreed to that name, so we kept it,” Tyler Johnson, 22, saxophone player said.

Some of the names they went through before deciding were, “Tyler Johnson Group,” “Groovy Cats” and “Walter Jones and the Jazz Bandits.”

The youngest member, Srimal De Mel, 19, plays the piano for the band.

“We all are studying jazz, but we started to play around with the jazz and mix it with the hip hop groove and funk groove, to make it a little easier for people that are not accustomed to listening to jazz, more open to listening to jazz,” Johnson said.

John Aparicio, 24, plays the guitar. Walter Jones, 26, plays the drums.

“The hardest part about making music is getting the music down,” Jones said. “We try to make it as difficult as possible, to give our music a unique sound.”

The last member, Gavin Vellems, 22, plays the bass.

The band wants more people to listen to their music and they are looking to stay together during the new school year.

“Right now, we are trying to get more gigs and really get people to hear about us and listen to our music,” Johnson said. “Most of us are transferring this semester, so we are also trying to figure out how to keep the band together while we all are gone.”

Aparicio and Johnson will both be transfering to California State Universtiy, Northridge, this fall.

Setting up times that all members can agree to is one of the challenges that the band faces.

In Walked Five practices every Friday from 4 to 7 p.m.

“The hardest part about being in a band is setting up rehearsals that everybody can make, having productive rehearsals, getting stuff done and making sure that everybody knows their parts,” Del Mel said.

The band does not have a manager so Johnson handles most of the promotion. Although the band tries to work as a team, Johnson does most of the speaking when talking about the band.

“The hardest part is getting gigs, because you have to really market your band to other people and get your name out there,” Johnson, said.

This Saturday, the band will perform at the Redondo Union Jazz Festival from 2 to 2:30 p.m.

Later that day, the band will also perform for the Spring 2016 Student Recital in the Robert Haag Recital Hall from 7 to 9 p.m. Tickets are available for $10.

Play that funky music Do students prefer downloading their music or streaming it?

• 178 students were asked what method they use to listen to music. They had five options in the survey.

• 33 percent of students prefer to directly download their music. After direct downloading, students second . favorite option for streaming is Spotify.

• SoundCloud seemed to be the least popular streaming option for students.

• When students selected “Other” as their option, the most mentioned services were Pandora, YouTube, Google Music and Amazon Music.

• The majority of these services are subscription based like Apple Music and Spotify.

Once a Warrior, always a Warrior. their superiority over Victor Valley, 63-0.

That’s how being a part of the El Camino family must So with such credentials backing him up, there’s feel for some. nothing but praise, hype and expectations following him.

And of course, the big news on campus as of late, forWill he do what he did at Santa Monica? Will he bring mer Santa Monica College head coach Gifford Lindheim another state championship back to El Camino? Will he has not only accepted the head coaching position at El follow in the footsteps of Featherstone?

Camino, but at the March 21 board of trustees meeting, he was officially hired.

Many players, students and recent supporters may not know, but Lindheim was once a Warrior. He was the defensive coordinator during El Camino’s 2008-09 season and he helped former head coach John Featherstone by leading the defense to become a top-five defense in the state.

With that being said, we would like to extend Lindheim a warm welcome back to the El Camino campus and football team.

But not only that, we think that the athletic division has done a great job, not just finding the right prospect to replace Featherstone, after his retirement, but also being able to persuade him to come to El Camino.

Should junior college be free?

UP FOR DEBATE Should junior college be free?

Free college gives more opportunity People like free items whether it’s free food, free clothes, or even free education.

The state of Kentucky recently passed a bill allowing high school graduates, students who are home schooled, or those with a GED diploma to attend community college for free.

Although there are requirements that come with having a free education in community colleges, such as keeping an average GPA of a 2.0 and also having 12 credits, there are plenty of reasons to like the idea of having a free Lauren Liddle education.

Staff writer @ECCUnionLuren For example, students who are struggling financially in their daily lives will be able to save more of their money by attending a free college which would lower their stress level.

In Germany, although the country raises their taxes on their citizens, it creates a country wide, free education in colleges for students.

If it became country wide, free tuition would create a priority towards education, giving a bigger incentive to learn since it would be more accessible to students.

People on the poverty line would also have the ability to go to community college with the promise of a better future for themselves.

With a better future students who are less privileged are more likely to deter crime in their city, education would allow less of a reason to commit a felony or seek financial stability through illicit activity.

Through gaining a free education, people would have the ability to create more jobs or maintain more jobs that will then stimulate the economy and allow that poverty line to shift for the better.

What I’m beginning to notice, is that there are more and more people who don’t know what they want to do with themselves.

I know so many people who are still undecided in their major and undecided on whether or not they even want to go to college because they think they may be wasting their time and money.

With free college tuition however, it would not only motivate, but also give those who are undecided a chance to be more productive with a brighter future.

Something that I would be able to feel relief from if I were able to have free tuition in community college is the ability to take classes that I found interesting without having the consequence of paying for the class.

For those who drop the classes, students wouldn’t have the worry about money coming in or out of their pockets depending on what their situation is.

Debt in college is something that is also hurting students. If it were possible to have this free education, debt wouldn’t be an option either which ultimately saves everyone more money than they originally had.

Paying for an education gives you incentive El Camino students are thriving off the incentive to pass classes so they don’t waste the money they spend on tuition.

Junior colleges should not be free because if the student can fail a class and take it again for free, he or she won’t be pushed into going to class.

The average published yearly tuition and fees of public two-year colleges is $3,347 according to collegeboard. org.

Although it is not as much as a four-year college, the Madison Brady two-year price is just as much of an incentive for the Staff writer @ECCUnionMadison student to get done quickly.

With the amount of financial aid, scholarships and grants offered at EC, the price can drop by qualifying and applying for them. Being awarded and receiving one of these financial boosts is a huge help when it comes to the tuition.

The EC website also has the option of the “net calculator” to figure out roughly the cost of the students’ school year and takes into account possible financial aid.

Although some students do have a goal to pay for the classes they need and to transfer, other students that aren’t as driven leads to funding for junior colleges to trend downward.

“A shocking 70% of California’s community college students fail to graduate or transfer,” according to a study from communitycollegereview.com.

Making junior colleges free will not change the common statistics among community colleges throughout California.

The funding that goes into community colleges can backfire and cause more financial strain to the university funding. If students are not realizing the opportunity they are given, why give it to them for free?

“Adding up state and local funding of community colleges and state and federal grants to students, the bill for early failures over the five years was almost $4 billion,” according to a study from usnews.com.

With free classes, the population will go up along with class growth and thus making it more difficult to receive the classes needed to transfer. Students already have trouble registering for these classes as it is.

The only thing that matters is if the student successfully completes the courses they need, not the cost. Therefore students who are willing to fight for their degree, will.

“Completion matters, and recent studies have shown that affordability is only part of what hinders community-college students,” according to a business article in wsj.com.

‘Flashing Lights’ is only the beginning for aspiring singer/actress Lauren Liddle

T

he minute she reaches center stage, it’s like she’s actually living, she’s unstoppable, and best of all, she gets this tingling sensation all throughout her body that’s full of excitement.

Yisel Cabrera, 19, communications major, has been singing since she was eight years old.

“I started singing opera when I was eight years old,” Cabrera said.

Opera then turned into mariachi and now she sings pop music.

Cabrera has also been involved in a pilot for a TV show called “Dos y Dos” but says she wants to pursue a career in singing.

“I do enjoy singing most of the time (like) in my car,” Cabrera said.

Cabrera has been asked many times about her thoughts on the red carpet event she attended Friday

Sharing the red carpet with her friends and family was an amazing experience for Cabrera, because she liked allowing people to get a taste of what she was doing as well as how she feels.

Her first single, “Flashing Lights” was performed live on the Telemundo Channel the same day as the red carpet event.

“It was very interesting writing this song because it’s the first song I’ve written on my own,” Cabrera said.

Cabrera explained that her song is based on her friends and going to the club and having a good time.

“I’m a party girl,” she said. “I thought it was perfect because my friends love to party just as much as I do and I love going to clubs to dance.”

Her cousin, Brian Salazar, 18, business major, had no idea she could sing until one church gathering that they had both gone to.

“When she and I went to a church event, it was an eye opener for me because I had heard her sing and I thought she was great,” Salazar said.

Going to these events and festivals was also a way for Cabrera to get over her stage fright and build confidence when performing on stage.

“My mom would book me at church events and fairs and that’s when a lot of people noticed me,” Cabrera said.

Cabrera started singing in a group of girls called Bittersweet when she was a freshman in high school that was created by singer and actress, Vanessa Hudgens.

“I was in that group for four years and it wasn’t until my junior year (of high school that) we sort of broke off,” Cabrera said.

Spring concert coming to Marsee Auditorium Trent Ledford

he “Still Life in Motion” performance will take place on March 31 at 1 p.m. and April 1 and 2 at 8 p.m. in the Marsee Auditorium.

The show will be directed by El Camino dance teachers, Liz Hoefner Adamis and Jennifer LaCuran.

The show is typically titled the “Spring Advance Dance Concert,” but this year, the name was changed to its new title.

“The show is titled ‘Still Life in Motion’ and it’s all based on pieces of artwork as inspiration,” LaCuran said.

The show will feature performances by students, faculty mem-

bers and guest performers.

“There are six student-choreographed pieces, and about 60 students performing,” LaCuran said.

There will be a wide variety of dances and genres at the show.

LaCuran said that the audience can expect to see modern dance, jazz, contemporary jazz, ballet and a more upbeat piece at the concert.

There are genres and dance styles for everyone in this semester’s show.

“I like to watch ballet sometimes,” Mayo Ozawa, 18, biology major, said.

open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Tickets that are bought online or over the phone are charged an additional $3. Students with an current ASB sticker will get one ticket half price.

“I’ve never been to a dance concert,” Patrick Harris, 18, psychology major, said. “It sounds like fun.”

He added that he thinks the tickets are a little bit too pricey.

Online and over the phone are a total of $18 for students, faculty and other attendees.

Students that want to be part of the concert next semester can register for dance 183, which is a performance class, or students can register for a choreography class.

Meet the Myriad Editors: Colin Hyde Creative arts journal welcomes nine new editors for the publication Lauren Liddle

A new spring semester means another edition of El Camino’s creative arts journal, The Myriad, is in production. With a new edition comes a new team of nine editors, all of whom are looking to bring home another award to the publication in their time as editors.

The Myriad editors took the time to sit down with “The Union” for individual Q&As to give readers a grasp of what’s inside their minds.

Our first featured editor for The Union’s profile series is 27-yearold English major Colin Hyde.

Q: Do you write any short stories/poems or create any art or take photos of your own?

A: My poetry and short stories are different than my books. With short stories, I try to make them void of character specification and strip it of dialogue with the bare minimum.

Q: What is your favorite book

Once Salliant had heard Cabrera and her group of girls perform at an event he attended, he was lost for words.

“When the song started, my mouth dropped,” Salliant said.

“Everything that they had (from singing to dancing), was a full package.”

Since then, their friendship has flourished and he has helped her really take off in her singing career. “(During the red carpet performance), I had one of my family friends hug me and just seeing her eyes tear up (from) how proud she was of me gave me a little taste of success,” Cabrera said. “I realized that if I’m this far and I’m making people proud, I can only imagine how much more proud they will be when I can finally say I’ve made it big.”

Softball team outlasts Mt. SAC in conference win

W

hen the Warriors have runners in scoring position this season, freshman third baseman Maleigha Quintero tends to get the job done at the plate.

Quintero did just that on Tuesday, blasting a two-RBI triple to deep right-center field in the bottom of the sixth inning to break up a tie score and give the Warriors a late advantage over the visitors.

The El Camino softball team (1711) survives against the top team in the South Coast Conference with a 9-7 victory over Mt. San Antonio College (21-3).

“I felt great (today),” Quintero said. “We all had a really good vibe and we wanted to win really bad.

I know we had a couple errors but we didn’t let them get to us, (and) we did a good job getting the first out which really helps set the tone for the rest of the inning.

Mt. SAC has been dominant this season and was able to escape with a 4-3 victory in the first meeting between these two teams. The Mounties entered this game on a 10-game win streak.

The scoring began early as the Mounties opened up the game by taking a 2-0 lead on a error and a couple of unearned runs given up by the home team.

The Warriors didn’t lose focus and answered back with a five-run bottom half of the first inning, including a bases clearing three-RBI double from Quintero.

Great defense from both teams

“We did really good being aggressive (at the plate) and taking hacks at our pitches,” Warriors assistant coach Kaitlyn Hooper said.

Athletes from the track and field team visited Santa Barbara to hone their skills for the upcoming San Diego Mesa Arnie Robinson Invitational on Saturday.

“A small, but competitive contingent of El Camino men and women team members competed in the

Santa Barbara Easter Relays on Friday,” Coach Dean Lofgren said.

Freshman Justin Alexander continues to amaze as he finished first in the men’s 400-meter hurdles. He is still currently ranked No. 1 in the state.

Sophomore Zaynab Bent-Mikail placed first in women’s triple jump and is currently ranked No. 2 in the state.

Freshmen catcher Brigid Antonelli, pitcher Haley Reed, and first baseman Kammy Fisher also added two hits each for the Warriors.

“I felt good (at the plate), and I just did what I was supposed to do for my team,” Camez said. “We had a game plan and we stuck to it, and just tried to stay aggressive on offense.”

Baseball team pitches shut out in conference win Taylor Dahm

T

he home crowd groaned with frustration after Tartars’ second baseman Alberto Avila put his head down, sprinted and beat out an infield single, breaking up Warriors’ starting pitcher Cassius Hamm’s perfect game with two outs in the sixth inning.

“Yeah I think everyone was aware of it,” Hamm said on the perfect game bid. “They got that one infield single in the sixth; I wasn’t perfect today.”

Hamm started off the game retiring the first 17 batters he faced and pitched eight shutout innings, giving up one hit and striking out nine batters in El Camino’s 7-0 win

over El Camino-Compton Center on Tuesday.

Hamm’s record is now 5-2 “He threw the ball wherever he wanted to and controlled the tempo of the game,” coach Nate Fernley said. “He was always ahead and was able to drop the curveball in there when he needed to.”

The freshman pitcher said he was surprised he was taken out before getting a chance at the complete game one-hit shutout, but knew keeping his arm healthy was the reason.

“Obviously if he had given up one less hit I would have kept him in there,” Fernley said smiling. “He was at about 95 pitches and we’re coming down the home stretch.

We’re going to need him.”

The Warriors opened up the scoring in the bottom of the sixth inning when freshman catcher Connor Underwood came up with a runner on and drove a fastball over the left field fence for a two-run home run,

extending the lead to 4-0.

“My other two at bats I didn’t do too well, so I was just sitting on the fastball and tried to put a good piece on it,” Underwood said. “It felt good to give Hamm a little insurance and let him settle in there.”

The Warriors continue to play well at home, improving to 8-1 while playing at Warrior Field this season.

“We do play well at home, I think we’re built to play here a little bit,” Fernley said. “We have outfielders that can cover some territory and we have some left handed bats that can make use of the short porch to right.”

After the win, El Camino moves to 5-2 in conference and 16-6 overall this season.

The Warriors will look for the sweep when they travel to El Camino-Compton Center today.

Men’s volleyball gets redemption in win over Moorpark Phil Sidavong

One week ago, the El Camino men’s volleyball team head coach said the team “stunk” in the road loss against 2015 defending state champions Santa Monica College.

Three weeks ago on March 2, the Warriors were trounced on the road in a sweep against conference-rival Moorpark College.

Tonight, the men’s volleyball team (7-6 overall, 4-3 in the Western State Conference) buckled down and tasted the sweet satisfaction of revenge, sweeping the visiting Moorpark College Raiders (410, 3-4) 3-0 in sets (25-17, 25-15, 25-23).

“We talked about (paying them back),” EC coach Dick Blount said. “It’s important for us to win (this) game, to get some separation (in the standings).”

El Camino is currently in third place in the Western State Conference, and come play-off time, only the top three seeds from the WSC and the Pacific Coast Conference are awarded the opportunity to take a shot at the state championships.

Sophomore outside hitter Nehemiah Iosia was gone from tonight’s game, and Blount said it was due

to him having to attend a church retreat.

“He hasn’t missed a day in two years,” Blount said. “He’s entitled to it. And Josh (Riblett, sophomore outside hitter/middle blocker) played great.”

Riblett has been mainly a middle blocker this season and with the absence of Iosia, he kept the pressure up for the Warriors.

“I was stoked and (had) a blast (tonight),” he said. “We came in today with a mindset like, we didn’t even have a choice, we had to win and there was no exceptions today.”

While freshman middle blocker Matt Carter filled Riblett’s usual role, and with his time to shine, he felt the team capitalized in the match.

“There was a little bit of rivalry against (Moorpark, because they beat us last time,” Carter said. “We had a strong block and everything went well.”

El Camino’s next match is on the road against L.A. Pierce on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

“Errors are always going to happen,” freshman setter/opposite hitter Pedro Campos said. “We just have to try and stop (making) so many errors, especially in the third set.”
