The New Energy Future

A Shell Perspective

S

hell sees the “New Energy Future” as the co-existence of all sources of energy—especially sustainable energy—in providing for the energy needs of nine billion people 40 years from today and helping create a cleaner environment.

The New Energy Future is both the journey and the end-result in a series of bold and long-term initiatives by Shell worldwide to combat climate change by abating greenhouse gas (GhG) emissions, specifically carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. It encompasses Shell operations in 90 countries and involves over 100,000 employees, including those in the six firms comprising the Shell Companies in the Philippines (SCiP).

A significant achievement on the road to the New Energy Future was a drop by 11% in direct GhG emissions (to 67 million tonnes) in facili-

ties Shell operates worldwide. This feat, accomplished in 2009, confirms Shell’s decision to focus first on its own backyard in its effort to cut CO2 emissions and increase the efficiency of its operations.

Diverse energy sources Shell believes the New Energy Future requires diverse energy sources (both sustainable and fossil fuels) to meet businesses’ rising energy demands and satisfy consumer needs for more goods and services in the coming decades. Managing emissions and better energy use also becomes necessary to help safeguard the environment and conserve resources.

Philips and WWF continue to educate children on Energy Efficiency and Conservation

M

anila, Philippines - After a year of effort, resulting in energy efficiency and conservation activities for over 5000 grade 5 students in 20 public schools throughout Metro Manila, multinational health and well-being company, Philips Electronics and Lighting Inc. and non-profit organization World Wide Fund for Nature-Philippines (WWF) agreed to join hands once again to further promote climate change awareness amongst students.

Following the success of the ‘Bright Kids’ project in 2009, Philips Chief Executive Officer Rico Gonzales and WWF Vice-Chairman and President Jose Ma. Lorenzo Tan, recently sealed a deal that will pave the way for ‘Bright Kids’ 2010, which will cover more schools in Metro Manila and provinces in Luzon. Present during the contract signing were Philips Corporate Communications Manager Nini Icban and WWF-Philippines Officers led by VP for Marketing Reggie Olalia and Environmental Education Head Obel Resurreccion.

Last year, the Bright Kids project focused on Metro Manila-based students. For academic school year 2010 - 2011, Philips and WWF aim to teach over 1000 students within the provinces of Laguna and Batangas plus 6000 more in Quezon City, Pasig and Makati.

The Bright Kids project resumes its campaign this July teaching grade 5 students the importance of energy efficiency and conservation to address issues on climate change and for a sustainable development of the country. WWF CEO Lory Tan says, “Young Filipinos want to make a difference, but many of them are overwhelmed by the challenges we face, and don’t know where to start. This partnership with Philips is designed to help them realize that there is so much they can do within their own spheres of influence. If we work together, toward concrete solutions, we will come to realize that climate change is not bigger than all of us.”

issues. Lessons on the efficient use of technology and ways to conserve electricity are discussed during the hour-long sessions.

“Through Bright Kids, we hope to educate young children about how easy it is for them to contribute to energy conservation. The simplest way would be to switch from old incandescent bulbs to energy-efficient Compact Flourescent Lamps (CFLs),” says Gonzales. “This is our advocacy. We want to reach out to more and more children, year after year and we are happy to be in partnership with WWF-Philippines for this worthy endeavor.” ends Gonzales.
