A PURE NARRATIVE SERMON: THE BEST LAUGH OF ALL The old man brought the load of wood closer to the fire. It was dusk, and the air was chill. But the silence was a blessing; it gave the bid man time to think. One-hundred-year-old men need time to think; there is so much to think about. He poked his old knife into the coals to stir them to life. His mind wandered back ... and 'back. He remembered God's first call as if it were yesterday. Even an old man could never forget the call of the mysterious .God. "Abram," God had said—that had been his name until God had changed it—"Go from your country, your friends in Haran, and your own father's household to a.land diat I will show you." And die old man had done it—just like that A small grin played across his face as he thought of his hurried departure to this unknown land. Oh, his friends had asked him about it; so had his father. But the old man had simply said, "God has called me." He didn't talk much in those days. / have tried to do several things in this opening. First, I focus squarely on Abraham, as the beginning, middle, and end of Genesis 22 suggest I should do. It is best not to introduce other characters too soon. Second, I introduce the three objects that will be central to the near-sacrifice later—wood,jire, and knife. Third, I introduce the history of this man, the "these things" of Genesis 22:1, to set the context for God's call to him. Fourth, because God's call has occurred before I must get that in front of my hearers in order to set up the new call that is about to happen. Fifth, I introduce the theme of Abraham's talking or lack of talking, an important element in the story of Abraham, Sixth, I stress Abraham 'sjirst obedience.
